Tara Erickson and Greg Alba delve into Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second film in the iconic series directed by Chris Columbus. This installment follows Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe, The Woman in Black, Now You See Me 2) as he returns to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his second year, only to encounter new challenges when the mysterious Chamber of Secrets is opened, unleashing a monster that petrifies students. Key moments include Harry's encounter with Dobby, the house-elf, who warns him of impending danger; the thrilling escapade where Harry and Ron (Rupert Grint, Driving Lessons, Wild Target) fly a bewitched Ford Anglia to Hogwarts after missing the Hogwarts Express; the humorous scene where Ron receives a Howler from his mother, reprimanding him for stealing the car; and the climactic battle in the Chamber itself, where Harry confronts Tom Riddle (Christian Coulson) and the deadly Basilisk. The film also introduces memorable characters such as Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh, Henry V, Murder on the Orient Express), the flamboyant new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor, and features returning favorites like Hermione Granger (Emma Watson, Little Women, Beauty and the Beast), Severus Snape (Alan Rickman, Die Hard, Sense and Sensibility), and Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane, Cracker, GoldenEye). Notable quotes from the film include Dumbledore's profound insight, "It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities," and Ron's humorous remark, "Why spiders? Why couldn't it be 'follow the butterflies'?" Send us a textThe US Fish and Wildlife Service decided to "manage" barred owls by shooting half a million of them over the next three decades. Jason, Rob, and Asher (along with the postal workers at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry) are upset about this plan for addressing the predicament of invasive species. Surely there's a finer tool than a double-barreled shotgun for conserving ecosystems and protecting the species that inhabit them.Warning: This podcast occasionally uses spicy language.Sources/Links/Notes:Bill Lucia, "Plan Finalized to Kill Thousands of Barred Owls around Northwest," Washington State Standard, August 28, 2024.U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Final Barred Owl Management Strategy, August 2024."Killing barred owls to save northern spotted owls: Rethinking American wildlife conservation," On Point, WBUR, 9/5/2024.Avram Hiller, Jay Odenbaugh, and Yasha Rohwer, "A Dystopian Effort Is Underway in the Pacific Northwest to Pick Ecological Winners and Losers," New York Times, August 8, 2024.Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, "Northern Pikeminnow Sport Reward Program."Robert Dietz and Brian Czech, "Conservation Deficits for the Continental United States: an Ecosystem Gap Analysis," Conservation Biology, August 16, 2005.Tom Murphy, "Metastatic Modernity #12: Human Supremacy," Metastatic Modernity Video Series, August 9, 2024.Support the show
Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing how Vernon Dursley met Petunia Evans, and how the two of them eventually became Mr. and Mrs. Dursley—the widely disliked aunt and uncle of Harry Potter. As revealed by the memories of a dying Severus Snape, there was once a time when Petunia Evans and her younger sister, Lily, were actually quite close. In fact, it would seem that as a young girl Petunia had wished to become a witch just like Lily, and even went so far as to write to Headmaster Dumbledore to see if he could make an exception and allow her to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry despite the fact that she displayed no magical abilities. Unfortunately, it would seem that Dumbledore's refusal—although delivered kindly—ignited feelings of incredible resentment within Petunia, which is likely what spurned her on towards a life in which she hated magic to the point that she tried to pretend it didn't exist. Petunia was also openly resentful of the fact that her parents seemed delighted by the fact that her sister was a witch, which ultimately led to Petunia feeling such incredible dislike towards her sister, her family, and her home in Cokeworth, that she up and left in search of a much more ordinary life.It was around this time that Petunia met Vernon Dursley. Witches! Part deux! Mike and Doc continue to stir their bubbling cauldron, discussing the North Berwick Witch Trials in 16th century Scotland, the witches of Macbeth and other popular representations of witchcraft. This episode is dedicated to the late actor, Dame Maggie Smith, whose lengendary career spanned seven decades and included a famous turn as Minerva McGonagall a witch/professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter film series. About this podcast: MONSTERS! They haunt our days and chill our dreaming nights, to paraphrase Emily Dickinson. There's not a population on earth that does not have its own unique monster stories to tell to frighten, but also to instruct on the nature of good and evil, right and wrong. But what happens when monsters get out of control, when the monstrous imagination starts to bleed over into the real world? What are the effects of monsters on real people's real lives? This podcast examines the histories and mysteries of some of our favorite monsters to unlock their secrets and expose their influence on our lives. About the hosts: Michael Chemers (MFA, PhD) is a Professor of Dramatic Literature in the Department of Theater Arts at UC Santa Cruz. His work on monsters includes The Monster in Theatre History: This Thing of Darkness (London, UK: Routledge 2018). Dr. Chemers is the Founding Director of The Center for Monster Studies. Formerly the Founding Director of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dramaturgy Program at Carnegie Mellon University, he joined the faculty of UCSC in 2012. He is also the author of Ghost Light: An Introductory Handbook for Dramaturgy (Carbondale, IL: Southern Illinois University Press, 2010) and Staging Stigma: A Critical Examination of the American Freak Show (New York: Palgrave MacMillan, 2007). Dr. Chemers is also an actor, a juggler, and a writer of drama. Mike Halekakis is an entrepreneur, business owner, internet marketer, software engineer, writer, musician, podcaster, and hardcore situational enthusiast. He is the co-founder of What We Learned, a company that specializes in compassionate training courses on complex adult subjects such as caregiving for people who are sick, planning for death, and administering after the loss of a loved one. He is also the CEO of Moneyfingers Inc., a company that trains people on how to successfully create, market, and sell products on the internet. When not burning the candle at both ends with a blowtorch, Mike loves video games, outdoor festivals, reading comics and novels, role-playing, writing and playing music, hanging out with the world's best cats, and spending time with his amazing wife and their collective worldwide friend-group.
Chapter 1 - The Dark Lord AscendingThe dedication of this book Is split seven ways: To Neil, To Jessica, To David, To Kenzie, To Di, To Anne, And to you, If you have stuck with Harry until the very end. Oh, the torment bred in the race, the grinding scream of death and the stroke that hits the vein, the haemorrhage none can staunch, the grief, the curse no man can bear. But there is a cure in the house and not outside it, no, not from others but from them, their bloody strife. We sing to you, dark gods beneath the earth. Now hear, you blissful powers underground — answer the call, send help. Bless the children, give them triumph now. Aeschylus, The Libation BearersDeath is but crossing the world, as friends do the seas; they live in one another still. For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is omnipresent. In this divine glass they see face to face; and their converse is free, as well as pure. This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal. William Penn, More Fruits of Solitude Q1 - What do you think of the forward and dedication? The drawing room was full of silent people, sitting at a long and ornate table. The room's usual furniture had been pushed carelessly up against the walls. Illumination came from a roaring fire beneath a handsome marble mantelpiece surmounted by a gilded mirror. Snape and Yaxley lingered for a moment on the threshold. As their eyes grew accustomed to the lack of light, they were drawn upward to the strangest feature of the scene: an apparently unconscious human figure hanging upside down over the table, revolving slowly as if suspended by an invisible rope, and reflected in the mirror and in the bare, polished surface of the table below. None of the people seated underneath this singular sight was looking at it except for a pale young man sitting almost directly below it. He seemed unable to prevent himself from glancing upward every minute or so.Q2 - What do you think of this scene?“Severus, here,” said Voldemort, indicating the seat on his immediate right. “Yaxley — beside Dolohov.” The two men took their allotted places. Most of the eyes around the table followed Snape, and it was to him that Voldemort spoke first. “So?” “My Lord, the Order of the Phoenix intends to move Harry Potter from his current place of safety on Saturday next, at nightfall.” The interest around the table sharpened palpably: Some stiffened, others fidgeted, all gazing at Snape and Voldemort. “Saturday . . . at nightfall,” repeated Voldemort. His red eyes fastened upon Snape's black ones with such intensity that some of the watchers looked away, apparently fearful that they themselves would be scorched by the ferocity of the gaze. Snape, however, looked calmly back into Voldemort's face and, after a moment or two, Voldemort's lipless mouth curved into something like a smile. “Good. Very good. And this information comes —” “— from the source we discussed,” said Snape. Q3 - What is going on here and who is their source?Again, Voldemort looked up at the slowly revolving body as he went on, “I shall attend to the boy in person. There have been too many mistakes where Harry Potter is concerned. Some of them have been my own. That Potter lives is due more to my errors than to his triumphs.” “I have been careless, and so have been thwarted by luck and chance, those wreckers of all but the best-laid plans. But I know better now. I understand those things that I did not understand before. I must be the one to kill Harry Potter, and I shall be.” Q4 - Is Voldemort right here?At these words, seemingly in response to them, a sudden wail sounded, a terrible, drawn-out cry of misery and pain. Many of those at the table looked downward, startled, for the sound had seemed to issue from below their feet. “Wormtail,” said Voldemort, with no change in his quiet, thoughtful tone, and without removing his eyes from the revolving body above, “have I not spoken to you about keeping our prisoner quiet?”Q5 - Who is their prisoner?“As I was saying,” continued Voldemort, looking again at the tense faces of his followers, “I understand better now. I shall need, for instance, to borrow a wand from one of you before I go to kill Potter.” The faces around him displayed nothing but shock; he might have announced that he wanted to borrow one of their arms. Q6 - Why does he need to borrow one of their wands?“No higher pleasure,” repeated Voldemort, his head tilted a little to one side as he considered Bellatrix. “That means a great deal, Bellatrix, from you.” Her face flooded with color; her eyes welled with tears of delight. “My Lord knows I speak nothing but the truth!” “No higher pleasure . . . even compared with the happy event that, I hear, has taken place in your family this week?” She stared at him, her lips parted, evidently confused. “I don't know what you mean, my Lord.” “I'm talking about your niece, Bellatrix. And yours, Lucius and Narcissa. She has just married the werewolf, Remus Lupin. You must be so proud.” Q7 - To Jenn's point, why do they follow Voldemort?“You must prune yours, must you not, to keep it healthy? Cut away those parts that threaten the health of the rest.” “Yes, my Lord,” whispered Bellatrix, and her eyes swam with tears of gratitude again. “At the first chance!” “You shall have it,” said Voldemort. “And in your family, so in the world . . . we shall cut away the canker that infects us until only those of the true blood remain. . . .”Q8 - Is he talking about killing Lupin and Tonks?“For those of you who do not know, we are joined here tonight by Charity Burbage who, until recently, taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.”Q9 - Did Snape give up his coworker here?Nobody laughed this time: There was no mistaking the anger and contempt in Voldemort's voice. For the third time, Charity Burbage revolved to face Snape. Tears were pouring from her eyes into her hair. Snape looked back at her, quite impassive, as she turned slowly away from him again. “Avada Kedavra.”Q10 - How evil is this scene?Chapter 2 - In MemoriamHarry had spent the morning completely emptying his school trunk for the first time since he had packed it six years ago.Q1 - How gross is Harry? He recognized it at once. It was a two-inch-long fragment of the enchanted mirror that his dead godfather, Sirius, had given him. Harry laid it aside and felt cautiously around the trunk for the rest, but nothing more remained of his godfather's last gift except powdered glass, which clung to the deepest layer of debris like glittering grit. Q2 - Will this come back in the end of the story? For his part, Albus had arrived at Hogwarts under the burden of unwanted notoriety. Scarcely a year previously, his father, Percival, had been convicted of a savage and well-publicized attack upon three young Muggles. Albus never attempted to deny that his father (who was to die in Azkaban) had committed this crime; on the contrary, when I plucked up courage to ask him, he assured me that he knew his father to be guilty. Beyond that, Dumbledore refused to speak of the sad business, though many attempted to make him do so. Q3 - Is this true? Why didn't Harry know anything about this?In a matter of months, however, Albus's own fame had begun to eclipse that of his father. By the end of his first year he would never again be known as the son of a Muggle-hater, but as nothing more or less than the most brilliant student ever seen at the school. Q4 - Is this a realistic depiction of Albus? Can a first year be the best student in the school? When Albus and I left Hogwarts we intended to take the then-traditional tour of the world together, visiting and observing foreign wizards, before pursuing our separate careers. However, tragedy intervened. On the very eve of our trip, Albus's mother, Kendra, died, leaving Albus the head, and sole breadwinner, of the family. I postponed my departure long enough to pay my respects at Kendra's funeral, then left for what was now to be a solitary journey. With a younger brother and sister to care for, and little gold left to them, there could no longer be any question of Albus accompanying me. Q5 - Did you know Dumbledore had a sister?Though Ariana had been in poor health for a long time, the blow, coming so soon after the loss of their mother, had a profound effect on both of her brothers. All those closest to Albus — and I count myself one of that lucky number — agree that Ariana's death, and Albus's feeling of personal responsibility for it (though, of course, he was guiltless), left their mark upon him forevermore. Q6 - Why would Dumbledore feel personally responsible? He died as he lived: working always for the greater good and, to his last hour, as willing to stretch out a hand to a small boy with dragon pox as he was on the day that I met him. Q7 - What do you think of the line “for the greater good.”He had never thought to ask Dumbledore about his past. No doubt it would have felt strange, impertinent even, but after all, it had been common knowledge that Dumbledore had taken part in that legendary duel with Grindelwald, and Harry had not thought to ask Dumbledore what that had been like, nor about any of his other famous achievements. No, they had always discussed Harry, Harry's past, Harry's future, Harry's plans . . . and it seemed to Harry now, despite the fact that his future was so dangerous and so uncertain, that he had missed irreplaceable opportunities when he had failed to ask Dumbledore more about himself, even though the only personal question he had ever asked his headmaster was also the only one he suspected that Dumbledore had not answered honestly: “What do you see when you look in the mirror?” “I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.”Q8 - What do you think he saw in the mirror? In person, Rita Skeeter is much warmer and softer than her famously ferocious quill-portraits might suggest. Greeting me in the hallway of her cozy home, she leads me straight into the kitchen for a cup of tea, a slice of pound cake and, it goes without saying, a steaming vat of freshest gossip. Q9 - Will any of this biography be true?Skeeter was certainly quick off the mark. Her nine-hundred-page book was completed a mere four weeks after Dumbledore's mysterious death in June. But old Dodgy Doge can get off his high hippogriff, because I've had access to a source most journalists would swap their wands for, one who has never spoken in public before and who was close to Dumbledore during the most turbulent and disturbing phase of his youth.”Q10 - Who is this source? No, it's the mother and the sister that intrigued me, and a little digging uncovered a positive nest of nastiness — but, as I say, you'll have to wait for chapters nine to twelve for full details. All I can say now is, it's no wonder Dumbledore never talked about how his nose got broken.” Q11 - Will any of this be true? What is she talking about here? It's been called unhealthy, even sinister. . . . Q12 - How would you describe their relationship with each other?Harry sat down hard on the bed. The broken bit of mirror danced away from him; he picked it up and turned it over in his fingers, thinking, thinking of Dumbledore and the lies with which Rita Skeeter was defaming him. . . . A flash of brightest blue. Harry froze, his cut finger slipping on the jagged edge of the mirror again. He had imagined it, he must have done. He glanced over his shoulder, but the wall was a sickly peach color of Aunt Petunia's choosing: There was nothing blue there for the mirror to reflect. He peered into the mirror fragment again, and saw nothing but his own bright green eye looking back at him. He had imagined it, there was no other explanation; imagined it, because he had been thinking of his dead headmaster. If anything was certain, it was that the bright blue eyes of Albus Dumbledore would never pierce him again. Q13 - What just happened?Chapter 3 - The Dursleys DepartingHarry pressed on remorselessly. “Once I'm seventeen, the protective charm that keeps me safe will break, and that exposes you as well as me. The Order is sure Voldemort will target you, whether to torture you to try and find out where I am, or because he thinks by holding you hostage I'd come and try to rescue you.”Q1 - What do you think of this?Q2 - Do you think the Dursleys are ridiculous? Do you have any sympathy for them? The prospect of parting — probably forever — from his aunt, uncle, and cousin was one that he was able to contemplate quite cheerfully, but there was nevertheless a certain awkwardness in the air. What did you say to one another at the end of sixteen years' solid dislike? “Well, this is good-bye, then, boy.” He swung his right arm upward to shake Harry's hand, but at the last moment seemed unable to face it, and merely closed his fist and began swinging it backward and forward like a metronome. “Ready, Diddy?” asked Aunt Petunia, fussily checking the clasp of her handbag so as to avoid looking at Harry altogether. Dudley did not answer, but stood there with his mouth slightly ajar, reminding Harry a little of the giant, Grawp. “Come along, then,” said Uncle Vernon. He had already reached the living room door when Dudley mumbled, “I don't understand.” “What don't you understand, popkin?” asked Aunt Petunia, looking up at her son. Dudley raised a large, hamlike hand to point at Harry. “Why isn't he coming with us?” Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia froze where they stood, staring at Dudley as though he had just expressed a desire to become a ballerina. “What?” said Uncle Vernon loudly. “Why isn't he coming too?” asked Dudley. “Well, he — he doesn't want to,” said Uncle Vernon, turning to glare at Harry and adding, “You don't want to, do you?” “Not in the slightest,” said Harry. “There you are,” Uncle Vernon told Dudley. “Now come on, we're off.” He marched out of the room. They heard the front door open, but Dudley did not move and after a few faltering steps Aunt Petunia stopped too. “What now?” barked Uncle Vernon, reappearing in the doorway. It seemed that Dudley was struggling with concepts too difficult to put into words. After several moments of apparently painful internal struggle he said, “But where's he going to go?” Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon looked at each other. It was clear that Dudley was frightening them. Hestia Jones broke the silence. “But . . . surely you know where your nephew is going?” she asked, looking bewildered. “Certainly we know,” said Vernon Dursley. “He's off with some of your lot, isn't he? Right, Dudley, let's get in the car, you heard the man, we're in a hurry.” Again, Vernon Dursley marched as far as the front door, but Dudley did not follow. “Off with some of our lot?” Hestia looked outraged. Harry had met this attitude before: Witches and wizards seemed stunned that his closest living relatives took so little interest in the famous Harry Potter. “It's fine,” Harry assured her. “It doesn't matter, honestly.” “Doesn't matter?” repeated Hestia, her voice rising ominously. “Don't these people realize what you've been through? What danger you are in? The unique position you hold in the hearts of the antiVoldemort movement?” “Er — no, they don't,” said Harry. “They think I'm a waste of space, actually, but I'm used to —” “I don't think you're a waste of space.” If Harry had not seen Dudley's lips move, he might not have believed it. As it was, he stared at Dudley for several seconds before accepting that it must have been his cousin who had spoken; for one thing, Dudley had turned red. Harry was embarrassed and astonished himself. “Well . . . er . . . thanks, Dudley.” Again, Dudley appeared to grapple with thoughts too unwieldy for expression before mumbling, “You saved my life.” “Not really,” said Harry. “It was your soul the dementor would have taken. . . .” He looked curiously at his cousin. They had had virtually no contact during this summer or last, as Harry had come back to Privet Drive so briefly and kept to his room so much. It now dawned on Harry, however, that the cup of cold tea on which he had trodden that morning might not have been a booby trap at all. Although rather touched, he was nevertheless quite relieved that Dudley appeared to have exhausted his ability to express his feelings. After opening his mouth once or twice more, Dudley subsided into scarletfaced silence.Q3 - What do you think of Dudley doing this? Aunt Petunia, whose face had been buried in her handkerchief, looked around at the sound. She did not seem to have expected to find herself alone with Harry. Hastily stowing her wet handkerchief into her pocket, she said, “Well — good-bye,” and marched toward the door without looking at him. “Good-bye,” said Harry. She stopped and looked back. For a moment Harry had the strangest feeling that she wanted to say something to him: She gave him an odd, tremulous look and seemed to teeter on the edge of speech, but then, with a little jerk of her head, she bustled out of the room after her husband and son. Q4 - What do you think she wanted to say to him?Chapter 4 - The Seven PottersQ1 - What did you think this chapter initially meant? It gave him an odd, empty feeling to remember those times; it was like remembering a younger brother whom he had lost. Harry looked around at the stacked shoes and umbrellas, remembering how he used to wake every morning looking up at the underside of the staircase, which was more often than not adorned with a spider or two. Those had been the days before he had known anything about his true identity; before he had found out how his parents had died or why such strange things often happened around him. But Harry could still remember the dreams that had dogged him, even in those days: confused dreams involving flashes of green light and once — Uncle Vernon had nearly crashed the car when Harry had recounted it — a flying motorbike . . . Q2 - Is there anything else about that flash of green light you think is important?Harry's heart seemed to expand and glow at the sight: He felt incredibly fond of all of them, even Mundungus, whom he had tried to strangle the last time they had met. “You got married?” Harry yelped, looking from her to Lupin. “I'm sorry you couldn't be there, Harry, it was very quiet.” “That's brilliant, congrat —” “All right, all right, we'll have time for a cozy catch-up later!”Q3 - What do you think of Lupin and Tonks getting married?“So this time, when you leave, there'll be no going back, and the charm will break the moment you get outside its range. We're choosing to break it early, because the alternative is waiting for You-KnowWho to come and seize you the moment you turn seventeen. Q4 - What would your plan be to get Harry out safely? From inside his cloak Moody now withdrew a flask of what looked like mud. There was no need for him to say another word; Harry understood the rest of the plan immediately. “No!” he said loudly, his voice ringing through the kitchen. “No way!” “I told them you'd take it like this,” said Hermione with a hint of complacency. “If you think I'm going to let six people risk their lives — !” “— because it's the first time for all of us,” said Ron. “This is different, pretending to be me —” “Well, none of us really fancy it, Harry,” said Fred earnestly. “Imagine if something went wrong and we were stuck as specky, scrawny gits forever.” Harry did not smile. Q5 - Jenn you mentioned this is unsafe in that Harry doesn't even know who they are? Are any of them using polyjuice here to cover themselves up?They might not be able to get at you or this house while your mother's charm holds, but it's about to break and they know the rough position of the place. Our only chance is to use decoys. Even You-Know-Who can't split himself into seven.” Harry caught Hermione's eye and looked away at once. “So, Potter — some of your hair, if you please.” Q6 - What would the harm be in telling everyone about Voldemort's Horcruxes?Harry dropped the hair into the mudlike liquid. The moment it made contact with its surface, the potion began to froth and smoke, then, all at once, it turned a clear, bright gold. Q7 - Any significance of it turning gold here? When he straightened up again, there were six Harry Potters gasping and panting in front of him. Fred and George turned to each other and said together, “Wow — we're identical!” “I dunno, though, I think I'm still better-looking,” said Fred, examining his reflection in the kettle. “Bah,” said Fleur, checking herself in the microwave door, “Bill, don't look at me — I'm 'ideous.” Q8 - How about the slight dig that Fleur gives here?Q9 - Who would you want guarding you if you were one of the seven potters? The broomstick spun to earth, but he just managed to seize the strap of his rucksack and the top of the cage as the motorbike swung the right way up again. A second's relief, and then another burst of green light. The owl screeched and fell to the floor of the cage. “No — NO!” The motorbike zoomed forward; Harry glimpsed hooded Death Eaters scattering as Hagrid blasted through their circle. “Hedwig — Hedwig —” But the owl lay motionless and pathetic as a toy on the floor of her cage. Q10 - How do you feel about Hedwig's death?Harry saw the strangely blank face of Stanley Shunpike — Stan — “Expelliarmus!” Harry yelled. “That's him, it's him, it's the real one!” The hooded Death Eater's shout reached Harry even above the thunder of the motorbike's engine: Next moment, both pursuers had fallen back and disappeared from view. Q11 - Is Stan Shunpike an actual Death Eater?Q12 - Why has Expelliarmus become Harry's calling card?Harry felt the bike drop a little, though the lights down on the ground still seemed remote as stars. Then the scar on his forehead burned like fire; as a Death Eater appeared on either side of the bike, two Killing Curses missed Harry by millimeters, cast from behind — And then Harry saw him. Voldemort was flying like smoke on the wind, without broomstick or thestral to hold him, his snakelike face gleaming out of the blackness, his white fingers raising his wand again —Q13 - How terrifying is this scene? It was over: He could not see or hear where Voldemort was; he glimpsed another Death Eater swooping out of the way and heard, “Avada —” As the pain from Harry's scar forced his eyes shut, his wand acted of its own accord. He felt it drag his hand around like some great magnet, saw a spurt of golden fire through his half-closed eyelids, heard a crack and a scream of fury. The remaining Death Eater yelled; Voldemort screamed, “No!”: Somehow, Harry found his nose an inch from the dragon-fire button. He punched it with his wand-free hand and the bike shot more flames into the air, hurtling straight toward the ground. Q14 - How did this happen? He felt Voldemort before he saw him. Looking sideways, he stared into the red eyes and was sure they would be the last thing he ever saw: Voldemort preparing to curse him once more — And then Voldemort vanished. Harry looked down and saw Hagrid spread-eagled on the ground below him. He pulled hard at the handlebars to avoid hitting him, groped for the brake, but with an earsplitting, ground-trembling crash, he smashed into a muddy pond. Q15 - How good of an ending is this chapter and the title of the next…

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the many reasons why Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, famed Headmaster of Hogwarts and former Gryffindor student, may have been more well-suited to Slytherin House. As fans, soon after Harry Potter received his letter of acceptance and we were first introduced to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, we also learned about the magical institution's four founding members and how they decided that the student population would always be divided into four houses, which would represent the characteristics and traits most valued by each of those founding members. As the majority of you watching this will already know, the four founding members of Hogwarts School were Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, with the corresponding houses being named after each of their surnames. And while later instalments of the series eventually focused on students from the houses of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, the beginning of Harry Potter certainly had a lot more emphasis on Gryffindor and Slytherin. What's more, there was a very obvious dichotomy presented between the two, with all of the protagonist characters—aka the “good guys”—being Gryffindors, and all of the antagonists—or “bad guys”—being Slytherins. From Harry to the compassionate and friendly Weasley family who helped him find Platform 9 and ¾, and the world-famous Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, everyone who was presented as good and heroic in the first few years of Harry's time at Hogwarts was a current or former Gryffindor student. By contrast, each of the BADDIES that we met during Harry's first few years were all Slytherins, including the bully Draco Malfoy, the cruel Professor Snape and, of course, the most evil wizard to have ever lived—Lord Voldemort. And who could forget what Hagrid told Harry before he entered his first year at Hogwarts: Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jeremy's Chivalry and Infatuations.by senorlongo. Listen to the ► Podcast at Connected.Chapter 1.I think I was in fifth grade when the first Harry Potter movie came out. My buddies Ted and Josh begged me to see it with them and since we were our own version of the Three Musketeers I agreed. We were into the movie maybe a half hour when I looked over at them. They were really into it. I could see the rapt expressions on their faces. Me? Well, let me put it this way; if I was texting I would have written “LMFAO.” I couldn't let my buddies see me but I was definitely laughing myself silly inside. Robes? Wands? Messenger Owls? Hogwarts School of Magic? What a crock! And believe me, I should know. When other kids were learning the “Alphabet Song” and “Twinkle Twinkle” I was learning my first spells. I'm a wizard. My dad, a top executive at a Fortune 100 corporation, is a full-blown warlock, something I hope to attain when I turn 21 like he and my grandfather before him did. You'd be surprised how many key people in business and politics are warlocks and witches. We even had a recent president and his wife among our numbers. My mom is a witch with a lot of magic at her disposal, but instead of working she's a stay at home mother.I always try to use my magic for good. It's something my parents insist on, and so far I've only hurt two people, but in both cases it was for a really good reason. In fourth grade a kid named Alan Hamilton was bullying all the other kids, stealing their lunch money. Alan was a lot bigger than all of us having been retained in primary school at least once that we knew of, but probably more than once judging from his obvious stupidity. One morning while Ted, Josh, and I were walking to school Alan cut us off with his bike. Throwing it to the ground he turned on us as Ted and Josh tried to retreat. I just pointed at Alan, whispered an illusion spell, and stood my ground. When Alan finished turning he turned white with fright; facing three king cobras was not anything he could have anticipated. When he ran back to his bike another spell made him trip, getting tangled in the bike frame, and break his leg. I caught a lot of shit from my mom about that but Alan's bullying days were over. The other incident took place in eleventh grade when Sarah Cunningham was bragging about how big her tits were in front of poor Mary Patricia O'Brien while she teased Mary Patricia mercilessly about being flat-chested. What the hell did she expect? Mary Patricia (MP to me) was a lifelong friend who lived only two doors down from us and her mother was as flat as an ironing board. I walked over to the girls. “Really nice of you, Sarah,” I interjected. “You're a real bitch.” I put a protective arm around MP and walked her away as she broke down into tears. Time for some magic, I thought. I turned MP to me and unbuttoned two buttons on her blouse.“Jeremy! What are you doing?” MP exclaimed.“We have an old family custom; a superstition, really,” I told her as I moistened my thumbs in my mouth. I put one thumb on each of her “breasts” and told her, “Think about them growing. I'll do the same and, just maybe, it will work.” I closed my eyes and scrunched up my face like I was really concentrating. What I was really doing was reciting a growth spell; MP was going to have tits, and really good ones, if I had anything to do with it! I turned toward Sarah and did the same to her with one big difference. A growth spell has to be turned off or it will go on forever. Looking at MP's frame I figured that somewhere between a B and C cup would make her look really hot so that's where I stopped her. Sarah; well, I never did turn her off. She wanted big tits and she was going to have them.Three weeks later; just days after her eighteenth birthday and a week after mine; we were on the way home from school. MP and I walked the last few steps to our homes. “Jeremy,” she whispered as though she had a secret, “please come over in a few minutes. I have something to show you.” MP and I are the oldest students in our grade. The school district has a cutoff date of December 1st for kindergarten enrollment. A child born on November 30th can start kindergarten in September at age four. Born just one day later and you have to wait until the following year no matter how smart you might be. That's why we were eighteen while many of our friends were barely sixteen. She turned and ran to her house. I looked at her, totally confused. Before I could react further I got a telepathic message from Mom telling me she needed me in the kitchen. That's one of the special abilities we all have; we can send and receive messages telepathically. “Okay, Mom, I'll be right there,” I sent back. After helping her I told her I was going over to MP's house and then I'd start on my homework.I walked in the door without knocking as I always did saying “Hi” to Mrs. O'Brien before heading to MP's room. “You decent?” I kidded her before opening the door.“Come on in, I want you to see this.” I saw MP sitting on her bed topless. She took my hand, pulling me to sit next to her. She led both of my hands to her chest. There were two small lumps there where previously there had been nothing. I felt them in awe. “It's working, Jeremy, it's working! Your family superstition is giving me boobs.” MP was elated. Two weeks later she invited me to her room again and once again she brought my hands to her chest. By now she was somewhere between an A and a B-cup. It was wonderful to feel those firm soft mounds topped by beautiful pink nipples. Three more times I'd feel them before they made it all the way to C's.Sarah, however, was learning that having big breasts wasn't all it was cracked up to be. She had probably been between a B and a C-cup when she started but three months later she was an H. A month later she must have been an HH. Kids started “mooing” every time she walked down the hall, and in the cafeteria it was even worse. I was feeling pretty good about all of it until my mom cornered me after school one afternoon. “I went to the high school for PTA this morning; I saw Sarah Cunningham. Her breasts weren't grown “naturally,” were they?”I gulped a few times before explaining what and why I had taken action. I told her I'd take care of her right away. “What about MP? Was that your handiwork, too?”“Yes, Mom, I couldn't stand to watch her get teased by the other girls. They were so cruel. You know what her mom looks like. MP was going to wind up just like her. Now she's feeling really good about herself.”“Okay, but you'd better take care of Sarah immediately. I heard she's thinking about surgery so you have to deal with it and the sooner the better.” I said the appropriate spell, Mom smiled at me, and Sarah's breasts began to shrink. I set it up so the shrinkage would occur pretty quickly so there'd be no need for an operation and I left her at a D which should make her pretty happy after her ordeal.Giving MP boobs proved to be one of my best ideas ever. I started going over to her house, and by March it was every afternoon, to feel, rub, and suck on them. In no time at all MP would start moaning like crazy. How her mom didn't hear us I'll never know. Maybe she did and just figured it was all part of growing up. Everything was going pretty well until a Friday afternoon at the end of the month. When I walked into MP's room she was completely dressed and looking down. I sat on the bed next to her and lifted her chin with my finger. “What's wrong, MP?” I asked showing my concern. “Did I do something to hurt you?”“No, Jeremy. I'm the one who's done something. Actually, it's because I've done nothing that I'm upset.”“Huh?” Boy; was I confused. I spread my arms starting to ask a question but nothing came out. I didn't know what to say or ask. Fortunately, MP saw my distress. She started to laugh. “Jeremy, you are so sweet. First, you rescued me from that awful Sarah and then you helped me get boobs and then you've been coming over here every day and making me feel really good!”“Okay,” I responded, “but what's the problem?” I was still confused.“That's just it, Jeremy. What am I doing for you? Nothing!”“Well,” I said with a sly smile, “you ARE letting me play with those nice tits of yours.”“Yeah, well, duh! If you knew how good it feels when you rub them and play with my nipples you'd understand why. But, what am I doing to make you feel good? Not a thing, and that's why I'm upset with myself. My mom had a big talk with me last night; about sex. She told me it was all about giving as well as you're getting. She told me that she's heard me moaning but she's never heard you.”“What? Your mom knows what we've been doing? Great, I'm really going to catch it from my folks now. They'll never let me come over here again.”MP put her finger to my mouth to quiet me. “My mom is really cool about my growing up. She knows I'm going to experiment and; well; she likes you. She's not going to tell your parents. She's not even going to tell my dad. So starting today I've decided to help you feel good, too.”“Okay,” I replied with a big smile on my face, “just what did you have in mind?” Rather than tell me MP showed me by pulling me into my first real kiss with a girl. MP had the sweetest, softest lips and when she pushed her tongue into my mouth I felt like I was in Heaven. “Wow!” I exclaimed when we broke the kiss, “That really made me feel good.”“Oh, Jeremy, you can be so silly sometimes. That was just a kiss. It was great but not quite what I had in mind.”“Then; uh; ,” I was tongue tied again.“Simple, Jeremy, I'm going to play with your penis,” she said calmly as she reached for my belt buckle. Slowly she opened my belt and unbuttoned my pants. Her eyes never left mine as she pulled my zipper down and removed my suddenly rock hard cock from my briefs. I was dumfounded by this development. I'd never seen this side of MP; maybe I was just too close to tell the forest from the trees. After all, other than Ted and Josh she was my best friend.MP pushed me back onto the bed and lay next to me as she started to stroke my cock. “My mom says that guys just love this. Do you love it, Jeremy? I like doing it to you.”“I do love it, MP. You can do this to me anytime.”“Is this how you masturbate, Jeremy?”“Yeah, MP, I usually do it when I go home after seeing you and your beautiful tits. Speaking of which why don't you let me play with them while you play with me?” MP sat up, removed her shirt and bra and returned to her place next to me. She stroked me slowly at first while I suckled and massaged her glorious breasts.“Is this your sperm?” she asked suddenly. I explained about pre-cum, suggesting she touch it and rub it over my cock. “Oh, I like the way it feels; kind of slippery, but how does your sperm come out?”“If you stroke it a little faster and harder you'll find out.” Taking my suggestion MP gripped me tighter and ran her hand up and down my cock faster and faster, I kissed her hard as I twisted her nipples. We groaned in our ecstasy at exactly the same instant. “Damn, MP, you're doing it. I'm going to cum.” MP broke the kiss and sat up a bit, leaning on her arm, to see what was about to happen. With a sudden grunt I shot almost three feet into the air. When it fell to my abdomen it was replaced by another not quite as high. All told I squirted five times. When I was finished I lay exhausted on MP's bed.“That was really interesting, Jeremy, and really sloppy. I guess it's really better in my cunny.”That got a swift reaction from me, believe me. I shot up and looked at MP questioningly. “Not today, Jeremy, I'm not ready, but when I am you'll know. I need to make you more familiar with my cunny before I let you fuck me. At least that's what my mom says.”“Wow,” was all I could say. “You really have some great mother.”“Yeah, I do, don't I.” She leaned over to kiss me again before walking to the bathroom for a towel so she could clean up the mess I had made.Chapter 2.Now I couldn't wait to get to MP's after school. My relationship with Ted and Josh suffered but, truthfully, I didn't really care. They couldn't give me anything close to what MP was giving me and as we continued to meet, so we also ratcheted up the stakes. It was early April when she first took me into her mouth. I had entered her room and stripped as usual. MP was topless, also as usual. I guess she wasn't quite ready for me to deal with her cunt. We pulled each other into a long passionate kiss. I could feel her braces with my tongue, something I found surprisingly arousing. Our tongues wrestled back and forth between our mouths. MP broke the kiss, gave me a brief peck on my lips, and smiled wickedly. Then she moved down my body until her head was even with my throbbing cock. She reached out with her tongue and licked my cock head, removing some of, but not nearly all of my pre-cum. “Umm, pretty tasty, Jeremy. I think I'd like some more.” That's when she took the entire head into her mouth. I should explain about my cock. It wasn't until I was ten that I realized my cock was pretty small, probably not more than four inches long, and that was with a monster erection. I recited my favorite growth spell, transforming it magically onto a much larger organ. After the spell it was a hefty five inches long soft, and eight-plus inches hard. More importantly, it went from just one inch across to more than two. I gave it one more treatment, making it the exact perfect size for any girl or woman I might fuck. Big cunt or small; I was going to be just right. Now, in MP's mouth it was at its maximum size as she struggled to swallow it. Up and down her head moved as she washed my cock with her active tongue. “Damn, MP, you're driving me crazy doing that.”“Don't cuss, Jeremy. I know you like it. My mom told me that this is the favorite thing for most men, even more than fucking.”“Well,” I commented, “I'm not in a position to say either way but it sure is great. If you keep that up I'm going to cum. I'm getting really hot.”“Go ahead, Jeremy. Mom says guys love it when they cum in a girl's mouth, too. I'm going to do it for you. I figure I owe you.”“MP, you; don't; owe; me; anything.” I was barely able to get the words out when suddenly, “Oh, God, I'm cumming. I'm cumming, MP.” I felt my balls clench and my cock expand in her mouth as my first jet of baby cream shot into her throat. She struggled to swallow my load as I shot repeatedly into her mouth, but she managed to get almost all of it. The little bit that escaped was scooped up on her fingers and licked off promptly. MP climbed up onto the bed and we held each other.“MP,” I whispered, “now it's my turn to feel guilty. Don't you think I should make you cum? I know you like when I play with your tits, but that's not anywhere as good as cumming, is it?“You're right, Jeremy. I thought I was doing all this for you but I didn't think of it from your side, that you'd want to do for me what I was doing for you. Here, wait a minute while I undress.” She rose and dropped her slacks and underwear, what I later learned were called panties. I looked at my friend naked for the first time and, for the first time realized what a beautiful young woman she was becoming. MP was about five feet five inches tall and couldn't have weighed much more than one hundred pounds. She had long blonde hair and freckles over much of her body, but not on her gorgeous tits, or on her fine firm butt. She had the beginnings of a narrow waist and flaring hips. She was, without a doubt, the sexiest woman I had ever seen. When she turned back to me I could see that she had golden pubic hair that was trimmed short and shaved back from her legs, I guessed for her bikini bathing suit.MP lay back on the bed next to me. I'd felt her skin on mine before but this time her contact sent shocks through my system. I pulled her into a close embrace for a long lingering kiss. “MP,” I whispered, “you have to show me what to do. I want to do it right for you.”She turned onto her back and spread her legs. “See out here,” pointing to her cunt lips, “I like to have these rubbed. It gets me really excited. In here is my tunnel where one of these days I hope you'll fuck me. You can stick your finger in there and fuck me with it. That'll feel really good. Up here on top; give me your finger; feel that hard little thing? That's my clitoris. Rubbing that will make me cum, but do that last so I can build up to it, Okay?” She withdrew her hand and crossed her arms behind her head. It was up to me now to take care of her. I followed her directions carefully rubbing her whole cunny with the palm of my hand. I guess it was Okay because MP started moaning almost immediately. I did this for maybe two or three minutes then I ventured into her with my middle finger. I couldn't believe how hot and wet and smooth she was. I pumped that finger into her and when her moaning increased I did it faster and faster. “Now, Jeremy. Touch my clit now; please! I touched her lightly and that was all it took. She shuddered several times and then it seemed that she experienced some whole-body muscle spasms. Finally, she stopped and lay still. “You can stop now, Jeremy. That was fantastic. We can do that every day. I think that we'll be ready for fucking pretty soon.” Wow, that was good news!Chapter 3.MP and I had several classes together and one of them was Health, a course that I thought was mostly a complete waste of time, at least until the last week in April when we started the Sex Education part. It was one of the few times you could hear a pin drop in the classroom. Ms. Finley, a good looking brunette with really big tits was our teacher and I know all the guys and, probably a lot of the girls, were wondering if she had gotten this knowledge firsthand. We learned all about the male and female anatomy and how both sexes reacted when stimulated which was pretty interesting but we were all waiting for the really important stuff; how to fuck! Ms. Finley opened the class by asking if we knew what a condom was. There was a lot of giggling and tittering in the room, but a stern look from Ms. Finley put an immediate end to that. She showed us several brands of condoms and opened a foil package so we could see what the actual condom looked like. Then she proceeded to roll the condom down a cucumber (I guess she couldn't use a real penis without getting into big trouble!). We were extremely attentive, actually staring at the demonstration, so I was surprised when MP turned around, looked me in the eyes, and mouthed the words, “I'm ready!” She smiled broadly at my reaction which was to almost fall out of my seat. When the class ended MP was waiting for me in the hallway. “Did you mean that, MP? Are you really ready to; you know?”“Yes, Jeremy,” she was practically whispering in the noisy corridor, “I am ready for you to fuck me. My mom and dad are going out tonight so I will be home alone until after midnight. I told them I would get you to come over to keep me company and they said it was Okay. You can fuck me tonight. I have some condoms from my mom.” She leaned over to kiss me briefly on the cheek even though that was strictly against the rules. Ms. Finley saw her but fortunately let it slide. We parted toward our respective classes but I couldn't wait for the day to end.MP and I were surprisingly quiet on the walk home. Even Ted and Josh commented. We were still friends, but no longer the Three Musketeers. Dropping them at their homes, MP and I were free to speak so I asked her, “Are you sure you want to do this, MP?”“Why, Jeremy? Don't you want to? I want to fuck you.”“MP, it's all I've thought of since we started fooling around. I'm the lucki

My guest for this episode is Ben Salem, a real estate developer who stumbled into the EMF mitigation business out of concern for his kids' health. Ben shares his journey from a worried parent to the founder of WaveBlock, a company dedicated to reducing harmful radiation from everyday devices. WaveBlock is a sticker that you attach to your devices, which then works to disperse rather than block radiation, making it an effective and user-friendly solution for mitigating EMF exposure without completely disconnecting from modern conveniences. Ben and I talk about the distinction between natural EMFs and the man-made ones that saturate our modern environment (including why this exposure is a growing concern), as well as the key differences between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation (and why the latter, despite being less understood, can still pose significant health risks). Ben's hands-on approach, including converting his office into a Faraday cage for testing, highlights the lengths he's gone to ensure the effectiveness of his products. And his insight into how children are especially vulnerable to EMF exposure due to their thinner skulls is eye-opening. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing the curse that Voldemort placed on the Defence Against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts and whether or not it lifted after the Dark Lord's death. Over the course of Harry Potter's time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, many things within the school remained steadfastly the same. The magic within the walls of the castle itself, the eerie ghosts that roamed the hallways, as well as the many familiar faces of the teaching staff. From Professor Minerva McGonagall, the constant Transfiguration teacher, to Professor Cuthbert Binns who continued to teach History of Magic even after he DIED, many of the men and women who worked at Hogwarts had been in their roles for many, many years. And yet, there was one staff position that wasn't so constant: the role of the Defence Against the Dark Arts—or DADA—Professor. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hey everyone. Welcome to another instalment of Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be taking a look at some of the most well known characters who show up in the Harry Potter series, but whose Hogwarts houses are never identified. For anyone who's read or watched the Harry Potter series, the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are common knowledge. Based on the four founding members of the school, Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw and Salazar Slytherin, the houses reflect the strengths, qualities, and beliefs of these witches and wizards, with each of the four houses being named after their respective founder. Those sorted into Gryffindor house value bravery and courage. Hufflepuff students believe in loyalty, patience and fair play. Ravenclaw witches and wizards, on the other hand, are committed to intellect and wisdom. And, lastly, Slytherin house welcomes students with immense ambition and cunning. From almost the immediate beginning of the series, fans are led to believe that these four houses play an immensely important role in the future and identity of the witches and wizards who attend school there. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing whether or not the bloodline of the famous wizarding family, the Dumbledores, died out with Aberforth Dumbledore. The most famous member of the Dumbledore family is, of course, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, who was also arguably the most powerful wizard of the 20th century. As the beloved Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, recipient of Order of Merlin, First Class, former Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, Albus Dumbledore achieved a great many things while he was alive. However, one thing that he did not accomplish during his storied lifetime was the progression of his family's bloodline. Albus never married, nor did he have any children. And, as the majority of you watching this will well know, he tragically met his demise in 1997 at the hands of his friend and ally, Professor Severus Snape. So, with Albus' death, was there anyone else in the Dumbledore family left to carry on the family line? Why, yes, there was…but how much further these family members managed to grow the family tree is unclear. So, in order to get a better sense, let's take a look at the various members of the Dumbledore family that we know of. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing some of the best secrets held by founder of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Salazar Slytherin. A pureblood British wizard, Salazar Slytherin is one of the first known individuals to have possessed the ability to speak the language of the snakes, a rare, genetically inherited skill referred to as Parseltongue. He was also said to be skilled at Legilimency, which is a complex form of magical “mind reading”. As an incredibly talented and powerful wizard, Salazar was also one of the four witches and wizards to establish the world-famous wizarding school of Hogwarts. And yet, despite his impressive intellect and abilities, Salazar Slytherin has arguably the worst reputation of any of the four founders—with even darker secrets. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing ALL of the memories that we see through the Pensieve in Harry Potter. Rare and powerful, the majority of Pensieves are typically quite small devices that, due to their incredibly personal nature, are often kept on one's person. Of course, one very notable exception of this is the large Pensieve located in the Headmaster's office at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This Pensieve is used to store all of the school's Headmasters memories so that their predecessors may watch and learn from them. It's described as large, ornate, ancient, and made entirely out of stone, with engravings of modified Saxon runes etched all over it. It is also said to be so old that some witches and wizards believe that the Hogwarts' Pensieve predates even the school's castle. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. The first encounter between Albus Dumbledore and Tom Riddle was in 1938, when Dumbledore visits Wool's Orphanage to offer Tom a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During their meeting, Dumbledore informs Tom about the existence of the wizarding world and his magical heritage, and Tom, who had already sensed his own powers, is intrigued by the prospect of attending Hogwarts. At the time, Tom was an 11-year-old orphan who had exhibited signs of magical abilities, but he was also known for his manipulative and cruel behavior towards the other chi*ldren at the orphanage. On the outside, Tom looked fairly innocuous, but underneath was a brooding dark force that would stop at nothing to cause pain and suffering to others. This encounter between Dumbledore and Tom Riddle is significant, because it marks the beginning of their complex relationship throughout the series. It also highlights Dumbledore's role in the early life of one of the most dangerous dark wizards in history. Right from the very beginning, from their very first encounter, Dumbledore was cautious and wary of the young boy- sensing Tom's dark nature and potential for evil. Despite all of the warning signs, however, Dumbledore proceeds to offer Tom a place at Hogwarts- hoping that the school and new environment would help shift Tom's life in a more positive direction. All of this is shown to Harry via the pensieve, the purpose of which was to give Harry a sense of context for the task that he would later give him, and the memories that he would later show him. He wanted to give Harry an idea of the troubled boy that lord Voldemort once was, show him that Tom Riddle was once a student much like him, and show him how his path of darkness began. But my question is: how did Dumbledore, who we are led to believe is particularly intelligent and strategic, suffer such a massive oversight in assessing Tom Riddle's nature? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing how ordinary Muggles react when they find out that their child is magical. The majority of Muggle-born witches and wizards do not discover that they are magical until they are invited to come study magic as a child. In the United Kingdom, this momentous occasion takes place the year of a child's eleventh birthday by way of mail. Each young witch or wizard receives their letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry sometime over the summer months before the start of term in the fall. In the case of Muggleborns, Hogwarts dispatches a member of staff to travel to the home of said muggle-born student so that the letter can be properly introduced and explained. These future students of Hogwarts have all been chosen by a magical system of admittance, which is exclusively operated by an ancient magical book and a quill, known as the Book of Admittance and the Quill of Acceptance. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing exactly when and how Professor Alastor Mad-Eye Moody was subdued and captured by Voldemort's Death Eaters prior to the second rise of the Dark Lord.In Harry's fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he is introduced to Alastor Moody, a reputable Auror for the British Ministry of Magic who has come to take on the position of that year's Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor. For almost an entire school year, Harry gets to know Professor Moody. He learns from him, and trusts him—only to find out months later that the wizard he's gotten to know isn't actually Alastor Mad-Eye Moody at all—but someone else entirely.Through a series of horrific events that begin with the murder of Hufflepuff student Cedric Diggory and end with the confessions of Bartemius "Barty" Crouch Junior, we discover, alongside Harry, that Professor Moody was captured BEFORE the school year even BEGAN. And the man who everyone had believed to be him was actually Barty Crouch Junior—an escaped convict from the wizarding prison of Azkaban and loyal Death Eater. But how in Merlin's Beard could this have happened?! After all, as we've already covered, Alastor Moody was a formidable Auror, a highly trained law enforcement official with incredibly powerful defence against the dark arts skills. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing why the world of Muggles and the world of witches and wizards are kept separate from one another. As we discover throughout Harry's initial years within magical society, witches and wizards have gone to great lengths to hide their world from that of Muggles. From concealment charms that make the castle of Hogwarts School look like a dangerous ruin to the secret brick-walled entrance to Diagon Alley, there are an incredible number of spells used to keep the wizarding world a secret from non-magical people. In fact, so well hidden is every bit of this world that when Harry Potter receives his letter of acceptance to Hogwarts, he is absolutely shocked to learn of the secret magical world that's existed alongside ordinary society for centuries. How could this be true? How is it that no one knew that witches, wizards, dragons, potions and magic existed? What possible reason could there be to keep these two worlds apart? Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing a handful of villains from the Harry Potter series that were just plain bad at being BAD.As the wizarding world of Harry Potter is set in a fantasy universe in which a young boy discovers he's a wizard who was—as a mere infant—responsible for the downfall of the most evil dark wizard the world had ever know, it's not all that surprising that throughout the series, Harry Potter encounters many, many other witches and wizards who would wish him harm. From those who loyally followed Lord Voldemort—the wizard he inadvertently took down with the power of his mother's love—to the less evil but no less menacing bullies of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, there were a lot of people who wished to hurt Harry and his friends during their seven year journey through wizarding school and beyond. And while some of these individuals were INCREDIBLY EVIL beyond any shadow of a doubt—people capable of doing appalling things in the name of their beliefs or thirst for power—some were, well—how shall I put this?—simply not very GOOD at being BAD.And, so, in today's video, I'll be taking you through my picks for the top five most ineffective villains of the series. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing why Fred and George Weasley never noticed Peter Pettigrew—aka Scabbers the rat—on the magically revealing Marauder's Map. I suppose to start with, we can address the question of: Why would they? Well, as we learn near the end of Harry Potter's third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Marauder's Map has the capability to reveal each and every person roaming the hallowed halls of the school, regardless of their form. It represents witches and wizards with a dot that has a corresponding name—which is ALWAYS their true identity, again regardless of any magic that may make them appear differently when confronted in person. And it is through the Map that Harry discovers a number of unsettling secrets that have to do with the night his parents were murdered—including the fact that Peter Pettigrew, his father's mate who supposedly died that same night, is ALIVE. How does he discover this? He sees him on the Marauder's Map. But I'm getting ahead of myself… Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The story follows Harry and his closest friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, through each school year at Hogwarts School of Wizardry. It started as a series of 7 books by author J.K. Rowling, the first being Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which was released in 1997.What B2B Companies Can Learn From Harry Potter:Have a ‘red thread' that connects your content to your storyline. Tell your audience a continuous story. Make connections between pieces of content for a sense of cohesiveness. Kendra says, “Don't just do ‘random acts of marketing.' Use that red thread to carry through, from the top of the funnel when someone is seeking you out in SEO, all the way to the bottom when you close, and even through renewals.” She adds, “Look at your storytelling like a seven chapter or a seven part book with multiple subplots.”Create a repeatable structure for your content. It makes your job easier, and creates a familiar blueprint your audience will recognize. Ian says that with each Harry Potter book, “There's that structure. You know each book is a school year.” And we can apply that to marketing, he says, in that “You need to have sign posts for your audience so that they know exactly what they're getting into.” Kendra adds, “There's a formulaic structure to the books. Layered on top of all of these subplots and plots and characters. And so, I think having that formula to your campaigns or your content is a great way to think about it.”Create a mystery worth solving. B2B marketing doesn't make you think analytically or engage your problem solving skills. But it should. Make your audience think, analyze, question the ideas in your content to engage them more deeply in your brand. Ian says, “Most B2B marketing or content is literally just telling you what the thing is, right? It's not creating any controversy. It's not creating multiple points of view. It's not debating things that could happen. In B2B marketing, you need to create stuff that people can disagree about.”Quotes*”We talk about this idea of human to human marketing, B2B people are still people and you're still buying from a human but we have the least human marketing possible. We have the least human content possible.” - Ian Faison*”A lot of time we write content that's for us and not for our customers or our audience. And so use words that mean something to them, not just mean something to you. What questions are they actually asking when they're searching for something in SEO? And is the content answering those questions?” - Kendra Walters*”Building that context to know when to use what type of content at what point in the funnel is something that can give you a lot more information than just like, ‘Oh, how many people looked at my webpage?'” - Kendra WaltersTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Kendra Walters, Director of Content Strategy at SAP Concur[4:02] The Enchantment of Storytelling: Harry Potter's Impact and Creation[11:51] Masterful Storytelling: Plotting, Pacing, and Character Development in Harry Potter[20:18] Translating Magic into Marketing: Key Takeaways from Harry Potter for B2B Marketers[26:17] Diving Deep into Harry Potter Fandom[27:40] Creating Raving Fans: The Harry Potter Effect[28:05] The Mystery and Engagement in Storytelling[29:04] B2B Marketing Insights from Harry Potter[30:21] Emotional Takeaways and the Power of Choices[31:44] Relatability and Human Elements in B2B Marketing[36:31] Content Strategy and Audience Engagement[38:33] The Impact of Content Marketing and Measuring ROI[41:58] Campaign Success Stories and Advice for Content Strategists[46:57] Concluding Thoughts on Harry Potter and Content MarketingLinksWatch Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneRead Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneListen to SAP Concur ConversationsConnect with Kendra on LinkedInLearn more about SAP ConcurAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're taking a look at the entire Harry Potter series and discussing the top ten unsung heroes from The Philosopher's Stone to The Deathly Hallows. In thinking about the novels and films of Harry Potter, it's really not all that difficult to name a few of the bravest characters that grace both the pages and the silver screen. Starting with the title character, of course, Harry Potter—or the Boy Who Lived—is without a doubt the most obvious hero of the franchise. Fans don't have to look very far from there to point out other notable heroes, from Harry's courageous and heroic best mates, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, to the world-famous Professor Albus Dumbledore. And while the headmaster has already well established himself as a hero when Harry arrives at Hogwarts School, the trio of friends also become lauded for their bravery and heroic deeds from their very first year at school. While the recognition of their heroism may go from “sixty points” to Gryffindor “for pure nerve and outstanding courage” in their first year to the gratitude of the entire wizarding world for defeating one of the darkest wizards history has ever know, it's rather inarguable that alongside one of the greatest heroes of all time, Harry, Ron and Hermione are also certainly heroes—all of whom receive the recognition they deserve for their bold and daring feats. But what about all those other characters who helped Dumbledore and the golden trio succeed in those accomplishments? For, as we know, Harry and his friends wouldn't have made it as far as they did in their journey to defeat Voldemort without the help of many allies along the way. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we'll be discussing whether or not Filius Flitwick, Charms Professor at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, HATED his students. If you don't know much about Professor Filius Flitwick, you may be asking yourself, “Why in Merlin's Beard would this seemingly jolly teacher HATE the children he taught at Hogwarts?” Well, as it turns out, Professor Flitwick is actually part-Goblin. And while many used to simply speculate on the idea that this could be due to his height and appearance—not to mention his incredible intelligence—Flitwick's part-Goblin background has indeed been confirmed over the years by author J.K. Rowling. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we're discussing 5 famous Slytherin witches and wizards who went on to make history. Within the wizarding world, anyone referred to as simply a “Slytherin” is a current or former student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry who was sorted into Slytherin House upon their arrival at the school. The House of Slytherin is representative of one of the four founding members of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, a powerful wizard who believed in magical blood purity and argued that only pureblood families should be offered enrollment at the school. As such, many people associate Slytherins with cruel, dark or simply prejudiced witches or wizards. Unfortunately, this view of Slytherins is further supported by the sheer number of graduates who went on to become entangled with Dark Magic. BUT, it's important to note that that's NOT ALWAYS the case. There are lots of *quote* good witches and wizards who have been former Slytherin students, some of which we'll touch on in today's video. So, with that in mind, let's take a look at five famous Slytherins who made history. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. The world of Harry Potter is full of magical mysteries and hidden connections, but one particular enigma has left fans puzzled for years. In the third installment of the series, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," an unexpected name appears on the infamous Marauder's Map: Newt Scamander. This surprising revelation has sparked countless theories and speculations among fans, all attempting to unravel the mystery behind Newt's appearance on the map. Today we're going to dive into the most intriguing theories that attempt to explain why the renowned Magizoologist, known for his adventures in the Fantastic Beasts series, would find himself on the map of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry during Harry's time there. I've done a video on this in the past, but it was significantly less developed with fewer theories. It was also 4 years ago, so I'm excited to take a look at this topic again. Let's dive in. Katie and Bridget say Wingardium Leviosa as they re-watch the movie: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone! Come along as we meet the famous Harry Potter, a possibly nepobaby that we allow since ya know, his parents died and he basically grew up being abused... He discovers he's a wizard (and also secretly rich - hello!?) and embarks on a magical journey to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - a place where the rules are made up and the points don't matter. While there, he meets his two best friends Ron, honestly a pretty useless guy but thank god he's an 11 year old Queen's Gambit, and Hermione, the only competent person in this movie and who should have just effed up Voldemort herself. The three work together to solve what the weird happenings at Hogwarts have been, even though there's literally so many weird and dangerous things happening there like all the time, but it's fine. Will the three be able to outsmart a bunch of grown adults and stop the evil Voldemort? Does a subplot of this movie actually follow the plot of Malignant!? Released in 2001, it's the first magical story being told out of the entire 7 book series and 8 movies!
