Dystopian societies appear in many artistic works, most notably in stories set in a future time period. A Clockwork Orange is a 1971 dystopian crime film adapted, produced, and directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel of the same name. It employs disturbing, violent images to comment on psychiatry, juvenile delinquency, youth gangs, and other social, political, and economic subjects in a dystopian near-future Britain. Equilibrium is a 2002 American dystopian science fiction film written and directed by Kurt Wimmer, and starring Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs. The film follows John Preston (Christian Bale), an enforcement officer in a future in which feelings and artistic expression are outlawed and citizens take daily injections of powerful psychoactive drugs to suppress their emotions. After accidentally missing a dose, Preston begins to experience emotions, which makes him question his morality and moderate his actions while attempting to remain undetected by the suspicious society in which he lives. Ultimately, he aids a resistance movement using advanced martial arts, which he was taught by the regime he is helping to overthrow. Alita: Battle Angel is a 2019 American cyberpunk action film based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series Gunnm (or Battle Angel Alita in English). It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, and written by Cameron and Laeta Kalogridis. Rosa Salazar stars through performance-capture animation as Alita, a cyborg who awakens in a new body with no memory of her past and sets out to uncover her destiny. Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson star in supporting roles. The Bad Batch is a 2016 American dystopian thriller film directed and written by Ana Lily Amirpour. The film is about a young woman (Suki Waterhouse) exiled to a desert where she is attacked by a group of cannibals (led by Jason Momoa), barely escaping alive to a bizarre settlement run by a charismatic leader (Keanu Reeves). Other actors include Jim Carrey, Giovanni Ribisi, and Diego Luna. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the Special Jury Prize. It was released in theaters on June 23, 2017, by Neon. www.wyrdrealities.net follow us on social linktr.ee/wyrdrealities --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wyrd-realities/support

1. From Deadline: Paramount Pictures has won an auction for an epic that will have Gal Gadot wearing the crown of a real wonder woman of history. Wonder Woman helmer Patty Jenkins will direct Gadot in Cleopatra, a period biographical drama scripted by Laeta Kalogridis. This is the first major project package won by Paramount Motion Picture Group President Emma Watts in an auction that came down to Universal, Warner Bros, Netflix, and Apple. Why Is This Trending? People are online attacking the casting using the hashtag WHITEWASHING. While others are posting that Cleopatra was actually of Greek and Persian descent. So should it matter that Gedot, a woman of Ashkenazi Jewish (Polish-Jewish, Austrian-Jewish, German-Jewish, and Czech-Jewish) descent, play the role? Does it matter? In the Guardian, it was stated “Casting misses a chance to give North African actors a higher profile” 2. From Variety: European cinema operators have said they’re devastated by Disney’s decision to release Pixar’s “Soul” directly on streamer Disney Plus, saying the move has “shocked and dismayed” them and deprived many audiences across the continent of watching the film. A statement from the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), which represents European cinema operators, said: “The vast majority of cinemas across Europe and indeed many regions of the world are now open and able to offer a safe and enjoyable return for audiences” Here is what's trending, The Walt Disney Company, under CEO Bob Chapek & Bob Iger, has unveiled a new corporate structure that places a higher priority on streaming in light of the rapid success of Disney+. 3. TMZ Reporting A crazy jewelry heist scene on "NCIS: New Orleans" got way too real for the actors involved ... when real cops showed up and pointed their guns at them ... and now they're suing. The 2 actors involved in the scene, along with the jewelry store owner, have filed a lawsuit in L.A. against CBS for allegedly misleading them into shooting a realistic "guerrilla-style" armed robbery in broad daylight ... without proper permits or giving cops and neighbors a heads up. The network's filed docs to get the case tossed out of California court, arguing that it involves events that took place in Louisiana, so that's where the case should have been filed. The plaintiffs' lawyers, Caleb Mason and Alan Jackson disagree ... saying the show is produced by CBS in L.A.

What's the name of that director who makes movies longer than all the dicks of the Avengers combined (yes, with Ant-Man in Giant Man form)? Oh right, Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Wolf of Wallstreet). Yeah, imagine him curled up in bed looking for a new project then reading the same script cover to cover twice. That's how Shutter Island came to be. The film is adapted from author, Dennis Lehane's novel of the same name. Yes, the Lehane who wrote Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone and holds a producer credit for this film. The adaptation was by Laeta Kalogridis, the creator of the Birds of Prey TV show and Altered Carbon on Netflix. She also previously wrote Nightwatch, Pathfinder, Alexander, Terminator Genysis, and Alita Battle Angel. The film stars Academy Award Winning (finally) actor, Leonardo DiCaprio as Teddy Daniels. Mark Ruffalo is Chuck Aule, Teddy's new partner, who might not really exist. Sir Ben Kingsley is Dr. John Cawley, a psychiatrist with perhaps the most ambitious recovery plan since Richard Dreyfus in What About Bob? Max von Sydow is Dr. Jeremiah Naehring, the German brain doctor who Teddy suspects of being a Nazi! Michelle Williams is Dolores Chanal, a certain character's wife (but seriously, you should know whose). Emily Mortimer and Patricia Clarkson are Rachel Solando, but which, if either, are real? Jackie Earle Haley is George Noyce and somehow his face is even more fucked up than in the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot. Ted Levine is the Warden, who might still be sitting on his own balls, though he isn't tucking his wiener back in this film. John Carroll Lynch is Deputy Warden McPherson, and inarguably gives a better performance than DiCaprio (fight me). Lastly, there is the actor nearest and dearest to Jake since he was a wee babe in the manger, Elias Koteas, AKA CASEY BUTTFUCKING JONES FROM NINJA TURTLES!, as Andrew Laeddis. This mystery/ thriller unfolds at Ashecliffe Hospital on Shutter Island. The Civil War fort turned asylum now holds three wards, A, B, and C, which hold psychotic patients with various degrees of violence. Two U.S. Marshalls have been called to investigate the escape of a patient, who seemingly disappeared. While tracking her down, Teddy reveals he has a separate interest in coming to the island: finding his wife's murderer! The culprit is arsonist, Andrew Laeddis, held in Ward C, for the most vicious of inmates/ patients. Drenched in hurricane downpours and suspense, Teddy and his partner search the grounds, leading to the revelation at the lighthouse. As the story unfolds we learn everything is not what it seems and everyone is not who they claim to be. . . Plot twists abound! We won't say which, but one character is certainly a fan of The Ramones, aiming for a Teenage Lobotomy of his own. This week's "Hidden Track" is Kill Her Mommy... Senior Writers Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back to talk about Shutter Island for its 10th anniversary. Shutter Island is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, adapted by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis and directed by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Max von Sydow, Jackie Earle Haley, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, and Ted Levine. It hit theaters February 19, 2010. The brothers talk about how their opinions of the movie have changed, the quality of the performances, and their interpretation of the film's ambiguous ending. Aaron and Josh also discuss how the movie fits into Scorsese's filmography and how a certain other film starring Leo continues to overshadow Shutter Island.

Hello Skywalkers!! Welcome back to a brand new episode of Skywalking Through The League, and we've got a great episode for you guys filled with insight, rumors, and a lot of laughs! We were joined by a very special guest, Adam Lance Garcia from Yahoo Entertainment and he brought the heat this week! Here's all we talked about this week. 1. The Vanity Fair Rise of Skywalker Preview While we were gone, Vanity Fair gave us our most in depth look at Episode IX, including names of new characters, planets, and really, REALLY interesting story beats that get us talking! We breakdown the breakdown, and Adam gives us a very interesting rumor about the title of IX and maybe why it was changed at the last minute. 2. Knights of the Old Republic Trilogy on the Way? One of the most wanted new stories that a lot of fans want the Star Wars films to follow is the classic video game for Xbox, Knights of The Old Republic and if Buzzfeed News is to be believed, we may be seeing it in the future. According to them the screenwriter of Alita: Battle Angel, Laeta Kalogridis, is working on a treatment for a film adaptation of the game! We talk about it and discuss about the possible confusion if B&W are working on an Old Republic and so is Kalogridis, what does that mean? Are they working together, is it a new trilogy? We talk about it all!   3. Adam's First Hand Experience at Galaxy's Edge. In his work for Yahoo! Adam was able to visit the brand new theme park at Disneyland before just about everyone else. Hear him talk about his entire experience at Galaxy's Edge, building a lightsaber, helping pilot the falcon, and answers the age old question.....is blue milk good?   Thank you guys so much for listening! The game is a turn-based puzzler and generally has very positive reviews. This was Skydance's second project to not be released by Paramount. Instead, Warner Bros. produced the film. The idea of catastrophic consequences of weather control by space-based stations is also a major plot point in Das Arche Noah Prinzip (1984), the directorial debut of Dean Devlin's long time collaborator, Roland Emmerich. The film was originally set up at Paramount before getting moved to Warner Bros. The film was set to be released on March 25, 2016. However, later in August 2014, Warner Bros. cancelled the March 2016 date and replaced Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) with its original date. On December 11, 2014, the studio shifted its live-action animated film The Jungle Book (2016) and gave its previous date of October 21, 2016 to Geostorm (2017). In September 2015, the studio again moved back the film to release on January 13, 2017. Lastly, it once again rescheduled to an October 20, 2017 release date per its trailer on the Kong Skull Island dvd. Some of the NASA scenes were filmed at the NASA facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. The film underwent re-shoots under the auspices of Jerry Bruckheimer, who was brought in in a producer capacity at a very late stage. Reportedly, these extensive re-shoots, featuring new material written by Laeta Kalogridis, were helmed by "CSI" alumnus Danny Cannon over a two-week period at a cost of $15M. This was Dean Devlin's feature directorial debut.
