Here is a visual representation of the Kardashev scale and the amount of energy for each step: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale#/media/File:Consommations_énergétiques_des_trois_types_de_l'échelle_de_Kardashev.svg] Why is there a scale? It's hard to have an intelligent conversation about something if you don't have a way to think critically about it. Classification schemes is one way of creating a frame of critical thinking. You have to create criteria for the different levels. How did we get the Kardashev scale? Russian astrophysicist, Nikolai Kardashev, created the scale in a paper he published in 1964 called, “Transmission of Information by Extraterrestrial Civilizations”. The scale measures a civilization's level of technological advancement based on the amount of energy it is able to use. What is the scale? Type 1 through 3. Frequently referred to as K1 through K3. A Type I civilization, also called a planetary civilization, has the capability to use all of the energy of its planet. A technological achievement that a K1 society would likely have is weather control. An example of this in movies would be any science fiction movie that shows Earth United by one government, or close cooperation, such as the movie Interstellar and 2010 Space Odyssey. References: the movie Interstellar: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstellar_(film) Stanley Kubrick Space Odyssey: * 2001 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062622/ * 2010 https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086837/ A type II civilization, also called a stellar civilization, can use and control energy at the scale of its planetary system. Technological achievements that K2 civilizations would likely have is the ability to terraform and build megastructures. An example of a near type 2 is the TV series The Expanse. Most space operas fall into this category such as any Star Trek. I wanted to place Star Wars here to but since Sith lords frequently entertain ruling the galaxy, they must be nearing K3 contrary to Star Trek, where the galaxy is still a vast place that takes lifetimes to span even with warp drive. Another delightful noir/cyberpunk book series is the Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard K Morgan. The first of which, Altered Carbon, was made into a Netflix movie. References: The Expanse: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3230854/ Star Trek serieses: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek Richard K Morgan's Takeshi Kovacks book series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_Kovacs A type III civilization, also called a galactic civilization, can control energy at the scale of its entire host galaxy. Movies like this do casually travel the wide reaches of the galaxy and the galaxy is as well known as any of us today see the Earth as well known and prospected by various nation states. The most famous example of this in movies would be, as I've already said, is Star Wars. More choices are Jupiter Ascending, as well as Valarian and the City of a Thousand Planets. In literature we have books like Vernor Vinges Zones of Thought, and Asimov's The Foundation. The Vinge book showcases civilizations up and down the kardashev model and so I highly recommend that to those who have a love for alien civilizations and interest in socio-economic development. Apple TV has produced and is streaming The Foundation as a multi series TV show, and it is very enjoyable and well acted, so go check it out. A feature length movie script that Hal Dace and I wrote Miss Wisenheimer and the Aliens falls into the K3 category as well but with the unique angle that despite having the ability to casually travel the galaxy like in Star Wars, there are no aliens so the film focuses on that mystery. I'll put a link to the short film version in the show notes. The short film version of the feature length movie, by the way, won an award at a Belgium film festival. References: the movie Star Wars: https://www.starwars.com/films the movie Jupiter Ascending: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1617661/ the movie Valarian and the City of a Thousand Planets: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_and_the_City_of_a_Thousand_Planets Vernor Vinge's Zones of Thought novel series: https://www.goodreads.com/series/52585-zones-of-thought Isaac Asimov's The Foundation book series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_series the TV series The Foundation: https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/what-to-watch/ct-ent-review-foundation-apple-tv-plus-20210924-3rzd3lon7rbrhidtrlpv5pl4t4-story.html Is the Kardashev scale any good? As you've heard on the show, it does help to quickly categorize levels of civilizations. A common criticism is that the jump from K2 to K3, from controlling the energy of a solar system to the ability to control all the energy of all the suns of a galaxy is too big of a step. But that said, it did actually do the job when analyzing science fiction movies. Another criticism is what about beyond K3? This brings us to the next topic. Typical adds to the scale At the front of the scale, it's typical to use 0 for civilizations that are just starting out or have yet to master energy generation. At the other end of the scale, it's common to add a level 4 beings who can control or use the entire universe. Because seriously, why would a Sith stop at making only a galaxy of beings unhappy when she could put an entire universe into a bad funk? Adding level 5 brings gives us a category for those who control collections of universes, or said another way, multiple dimensions. For those who have seen Valarian, remember the extraction scene that the main character, Valarian was involved with required them to go to another dimension. And for those who have seen the Thor movies, this gives us a catagory for Asgardians. References: Miss Wisenheimer: Short film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJpyfhkfm3QFacebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MissWisenheimer/TV interview about the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EItnd8bXhdkMiss Wisenheimer and the Aliens film page: https://www.facebook.com/MissWisenheimer Valarian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valerian_and_the_City_of_a_Thousand_Planets Jupiter Ascending: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jupiter_Ascending What are the dangers of advancing on the scale? There are some books that follow characters through the changes that happen to a civilization as they climb the Kardashev scale. Charles Stross' Accellerando describes a progression from K0 to K2. In Italian, accelerando means "speeding up" and is used as a tempo marking in musical notation. In Stross' novel, it refers to the accelerating rate at which humanity in general, and/or the novel's characters, head towards the technological singularity. This story focuses mostly on human culture. To the author's credit, he does all of this in one book. Accellerando: Vernor Vinges Zones of Thought novels, shows civilizations climbing to high parts of the scale, and many falling to lower parts of the scale. And like The Foundation, there is a group who is interested in helping to prevent a fall or helping to shorten the dark ages that follow after a fall. A Fire Upon the Deep is a 1992 science fiction novel by American writer Vernor Vinge. It is a space opera involving superhuman intelligences, aliens, variable physics, space battles, love, betrayal, genocide, and a communication medium resembling Usenet. A Fire Upon the Deep won the Hugo Award in 1993, sharing it with Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. This series contains a lot of wonderfully thought out and dramatic alien culture. On this very special episode of Discussions and Drinks we welcome back our Books Over Beer cohort Jonathon. He has been off recording episodes of his solo podcast Fortune's Wheel: A Podcast History of the Middle Ages. Though Jonathon has never seen a single episode of the show we discussed it was nice to have him back. This episode we talked both seasons of Netflix's Altered Carbon. "More than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by new technology, leading to human bodies being interchangeable and death no longer being permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the only surviving soldier of a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned for centuries until impossibly wealthy businessman Laurens Bancroft offers him the chance to live again. Kovacs will have to do something for Bancroft, though, if he wants to be resurrected. Bancroft's request of Kovacs is to solve a murder -- Bancroft's. "Altered Carbon" is based on Richard K. Morgan's cyberpunk noir novel of the same name."   Altered Carbon TV series created by Laeta Kalogridis and based on the 2002 novel of the same title by English author Richard K. Morgan. On this latest edition of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast, we sit down and chat with composer Jordan Gagne, co-composer on 'Altered Carbon' Season 2, Nathan Fillion's 'The Rookie', and the Jason Borne franchise series 'Treadstone'.Jordan is a Canadian composer based in Los Angeles, and for many years has been working closely with the brilliant Jeff Russo, the man behind the music for 'Star Trek Picard', 'Star Trek Discovery' and 'Fargo'. In the interview, we discuss his long relationship working with Jeff across a range of projects, including the recently released 'Altered Carbon' Season 2. Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, ‘Altered Carbon’ is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. In season 2, Anthony Mackie takes over the role of Takeshi Kovacs from Joel Kinnaman. A former Protectorate CTAC soldier who became a revolutionary Envoy, and then a mercenary for hire, Kovacs swears allegiance to no man or woman except one: Quellcrist Falconer. His undying quest to reconnect with her spans multiple centuries, planets and sleeves. We discuss how the changes on-screen in Season 2 are reflected in the music for the show, whilst making sure the themes are still relevant, along with how he works with Jeff to create the sound of the show. We also discuss his work on 'The Rookie' and 'Treadstone', along with their upcoming project 'Brave New World' for USA Network. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The new showrunner for the series, Alison Schapker, previewed the season on the podcast, talking about how the story will not only build on the same consciousness transferring foundation of the first run; it will also bring a new kind of energy both in Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Takeshi Kovacs, played last season by Joel Kinnaman, and in the more hopeful quest to find his long lost love, Quellcrist Falconer. Today I have an interview with Pat who is from Calgary and ran his first Boston this year in the epic weather.  In section one I’ll give you a write up of the trail race I ran last weekend.  And in section two a quick book report on the second book in the Takeshi Kovacs series.  A real grab-bag of topics.  You might ask, Chris it seems like you’re just stuffing random topics into a show to make a deadline.  And I would answer no, I’m embracing a random universe, I’m satisfying the souls of the renaissance woman and men who are endurance athletes and well… a deadline is a deadline! My training for my first hundred miler is going as well as can be expected.  I topped out a couple 50+ mile trail weeks and now I’m in a recovery week to get the benefit.  With the long days I can go out in the morning in the forest behind my house.  I can be back before most people are even up!  It’s beautiful out there.  The trails are drying up nicely.  I take Buddy the elderly wonder dog with me for the first 2-mile loop and he loves it.  He’s a trooper.  In the morning it’s cool and the bugs aren’t out yet.  Let me tell you the story about Buddy’s soccer ball. Many moons ago when I was a soccer coach for my kids I ended up with a kid’s soccer ball in my bag of balls from the local field.  It was one of the little ones for little kids.  It eventually ended up in my front yard and became the dog’s soccer ball.  Buddy never popped it, he just played with it.  For a decade it was a fixture in the yard.  This spring, unknown to me, it disappeared.  A couple weeks ago I was out in the trails and there was Buddy’s soccer ball a ¼ mile from the house on the trail.  Then yesterday I was out and I saw it again, now maybe ¾ of a mile out on the trail.  It seems some friendly interloping dog came into our yard and took Buddy’s soccer ball for a carry in the woods.  The problem is that I don’t come back the same trail I got out.  But, yesterday it didn’t seem right to abandon it so I grabbed it and carried it with me as I was running through the woods. I was like some grade schooler goalie given a coach’s penalty.  “Take that ball with you and give me 20 laps!”  A muddy, half-deflated kid’s soccer ball isn’t as easy to carry as you would think.  I didn’t want to put it under my arm, like an American football, because it was quite muddy.  I had to sort of clench it in one hand.  It was a bit unwieldy. But, now it is back where it belongs.  Lying in the grass beside an elderly border collie… until a thieving rover roves by once more.  On with the show! … I’ll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? It means you don’t have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member’s only audio. There are book reviews, odd philosophical thoughts, zombie stories and I curate old episodes for you to listen to.  I recently added that guy who cut off is foot so he could keep training and my first call with Geoff Galloway.   “Curated” means I add some introductory comments and edit them up a bit.  So anyhow – become a member so I can keep paying my bills.   … The RunRunLive podcast is Ad Free and listener supported.  We do this by offering a membership option where members get Access to Exclusive Members Only audio and articles. Links are in the show notes and at RunRunLive.com … Section one – Wapack and Back 2018 - Voices of reason – the conversation Patrick Hanlon Patrick Hanlon, 51, is an educator, writer and photographer based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He has been a long distance runner for the last 9 years and can be regularly found running along the Bow River. He has completed 11 marathons including Big Sur, Edmonton, Calgary, Nova Scotia, Nashville and Boston. His account of the 2018 Boston Marathon can be read at:    Section two – Broken Angels – Outro Ok my friends you have stumbled down a rocky slope to the bottom of the mountain that was Episode 4-386 of the RunRunLive Podcast.  Mission accomplished. Have a smoothie.  Throw in some extra Kale.  I started figuring out the logistics for the 100Miler.  It is the Burning River 100 in southern Ohio.  It starts on Saturday July 28th at 4:00 in the morning.  I am not going to try to guess a finish time but it will be some time Sunday Morning.  It’s a point to point.  They bus you out from the finish at 3:00 in the morning.  The course doesn’t look to bad.  It’s only got a few thousand feet of gain and loss over the 100.  So nothing like the Wapack.  The timing is a bit troublesome.  With that start time I’ll be running the last half of the race in the dark.  Doesn’t sound like I’ll be getting much sleep that weekend.  I haven’t decided if I’m going to drive out and get a hotel or maybe rent a camper or something.  I know I won’t be in any shape to drive afterwards.  And, this is where you come in.  I need pacers and crew. Who wants to come pace me through a section of the last 50 miles?  I’m going to be going super slow.  It’s going to be the middle of the night.  All you have to do is keep me on course and say encouraging things like, “Come on, you can barely see the bone protruding through the skin, rub some dirt on it and suck it up!” Shoot me an email and we’ll make a date. Guess what else?  I got my old motorcycle running this week.  Yup, that bike that I bought factory fresh in 1985.  It lives.  Here’s the story.  Last summer the clutch started getting soft on me and I didn’t have time, money or energy to attend to it so I just packed it away into the garage for the winter. I dropped it off last week at the shop and had them take a look.  With a clutch problem it can either be simple or hard.  It might be simply air in the line or fluid or a leak in a line.  Or it can be the slave cylinder or the oil seals where the clutch meets the engine.  I was a bit terrified that this was going to be one of those take the engine apart kind of things.  I know from experience that if this was a car that clutch could run me $1500 dollars and I wasn’t really excited about spending that on a $1,000 motorcycle.  I called the guy and asked if they had figured out what was wrong. He said, “You’ll have to call back later we’re still building the estimate.”  That sounded to me like I should start mentally preparing for the worst.  I called back.  My heart sank when he said, “I’m sorry but it’s the slave cylinder and an oils seal.”  Then he continued, reluctantly, “It’s going to be $238 dollars.” I heaved a sigh of relief and told him to go ahead.  Got to love the simple engineering of a Honda motorcycle! So, as it turns out, I’ll see you out there!   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks -

The RunRunLive 4.0 Podcast Episode 4-386 – Pat Runs Boston (Audio: link) audio:http://www.RunRunLive.com/PodcastEpisodes/epi4386.mp3] Link MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks - Hello and welcome to the RunRunLive Podcast episode 4-386.  This is Chris, your host.  How are we doing on the fine spring day?  I love May.  Don't' you?  Up here in New England it's a time of rebirth.  The trees and bushes go from brown to green in the span of a few days like one of those slow motion nature videos.  We are close by the summer solstice.  We get back all those long dark winter days.  The sunrise today is 5:19 AM and the sunset is 8:02.  Plenty of time to get stuff done!  It's still cool in the mornings and hasn't gotten hot yet during the days.  This is the week after Mother's Day when those of us who have read the farmer's almanac start planting our gardens, and those of us who are over enthusiastic have to replant what they killed by planting it two weeks ago! Today I have an interview with Pat who is from Calgary and ran his first Boston this year in the epic weather.  In section one I'll give you a write up of the trail race I ran last weekend.  And in section two a quick book report on the second book in the Takeshi Kovacs series.  A real grab-bag of topics.  You might ask, Chris it seems like you're just stuffing random topics into a show to make a deadline.  And I would answer no, I'm embracing a random universe, I'm satisfying the souls of the renaissance woman and men who are endurance athletes and well… a deadline is a deadline! My training for my first hundred miler is going as well as can be expected.  I topped out a couple 50+ mile trail weeks and now I'm in a recovery week to get the benefit.  With the long days I can go out in the morning in the forest behind my house.  I can be back before most people are even up!  It's beautiful out there.  The trails are drying up nicely.  I take Buddy the elderly wonder dog with me for the first 2-mile loop and he loves it.  He's a trooper.  In the morning it's cool and the bugs aren't out yet.  Let me tell you the story about Buddy's soccer ball. Many moons ago when I was a soccer coach for my kids I ended up with a kid's soccer ball in my bag of balls from the local field.  It was one of the little ones for little kids.  It eventually ended up in my front yard and became the dog's soccer ball.  Buddy never popped it, he just played with it.  For a decade it was a fixture in the yard.  This spring, unknown to me, it disappeared.  A couple weeks ago I was out in the trails and there was Buddy's soccer ball a ¼ mile from the house on the trail.  Then yesterday I was out and I saw it again, now maybe ¾ of a mile out on the trail.  It seems some friendly interloping dog came into our yard and took Buddy's soccer ball for a carry in the woods.  The problem is that I don't come back the same trail I got out.  But, yesterday it didn't seem right to abandon it so I grabbed it and carried it with me as I was running through the woods. I was like some grade schooler goalie given a coach's penalty.  “Take that ball with you and give me 20 laps!”  A muddy, half-deflated kid's soccer ball isn't as easy to carry as you would think.  I didn't want to put it under my arm, like an American football, because it was quite muddy.  I had to sort of clench it in one hand.  It was a bit unwieldy. But, now it is back where it belongs.  Lying in the grass beside an elderly border collie… until a thieving rover roves by once more.  On with the show! … I'll remind you that the RunRunLive podcast is ad free and listener supported.  What does that mean? It means you don't have to listen to me trying to sound sincere about Stamps.com or Audible.. (although, fyi, my MarathonBQ book is on audible) We do have a membership option where you can become a member and as a special thank you, you will get access to member's only audio. It's a point to point.  They bus you out from the finish at 3:00 in the morning.  The course doesn't look to bad.  It's only got a few thousand feet of gain and loss over the 100.  So nothing like the Wapack.  The timing is a bit troublesome.  With that start time I'll be running the last half of the race in the dark.  Doesn't sound like I'll be getting much sleep that weekend.  I haven't decided if I'm going to drive out and get a hotel or maybe rent a camper or something.  I know I won't be in any shape to drive afterwards.  And, this is where you come in.  I need pacers and crew. Who wants to come pace me through a section of the last 50 miles?  I'm going to be going super slow.  It's going to be the middle of the night.  All you have to do is keep me on course and say encouraging things like, “Come on, you can barely see the bone protruding through the skin, rub some dirt on it and suck it up!” Shoot me an email and we'll make a date. Guess what else?  I got my old motorcycle running this week.  Yup, that bike that I bought factory fresh in 1985.  It lives.  Here's the story.  Last summer the clutch started getting soft on me and I didn't have time, money or energy to attend to it so I just packed it away into the garage for the winter. I know from experience that if this was a car that clutch could run me $1500 dollars and I wasn't really excited about spending that on a $1,000 motorcycle.  I called the guy and asked if they had figured out what was wrong. He said, “You'll have to call back later we're still building the estimate.”  That sounded to me like I should start mentally preparing for the worst.  I called back.  My heart sank when he said, “I'm sorry but it's the slave cylinder and an oils seal.”  Then he continued, reluctantly, “It's going to be $238 dollars.” I heaved a sigh of relief and told him to go ahead.  Got to love the simple engineering of a Honda motorcycle! So, as it turns out, I'll see you out there!   MarathonBQ – How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon in 14 Weeks -

He learns that life doesn't always work out as planned when his daughter, Jennifer -- a star student who is determined to achieve justice at any cost -- gets recruited by a street gang. In order to protect his family, Jefferson sees no choice but to once again become Black Lightning. The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (season 2 on FX)The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is the second season of the FX true crime anthology television series American Crime Story. The season premiered on January 17, 2018, and will consist of a total of 9 episodes.[3] It explores the murder of designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, based on Maureen Orth's book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. Grey’s Anatomy (season 14 on ABC)The medical drama series focuses on a group of doctors at a hospital in Seattle, including several who began their careers at the facility as interns. One of the doctors and the show's namesake, Meredith Grey, is the daughter of a famous surgeon. She struggles to maintain relationships with her colleagues, particularly the hospital's one-time chief of surgery, Richard Webber, due to a pre-existing relationship between them -- Webber and Meredith's mother had a personal relationship when Meredith was young. Scandal (final season on ABC)"Grey's Anatomy" creator Shonda Rhimes is the creative mind behind this ABC drama. Olivia Pope, a former media consultant to the president, is ready to move on with her life and opens her own crisis-management firm, but she can't seem to shake ties with her past. Olivia's staff includes Quinn Perkins, who has a complicated history, and hacker extraordinaire Huck. As she moves forward it becomes clear that, while her staffers may specialize in cleaning up the lives of other people, they can't seem to do the same for themselves. High Maintenance (season 2 on HBO)Exploring the private lives of dozens of New Yorkers that have one connection, their weed dealer. Counterpart (season 1 on Starz)What might be different if a person could co-exist in an alternate world? Howard Silk, a low-level agent whose career is winding down at a Berlin-based United Nations spy agency, unwittingly learns the answer. Upon discovering his organization is harboring a secret, that of a gateway to a parallel dimension, Howard becomes immersed in a mysterious world of espionage, intrigue, and government conspiracies. There, the only man Howard can trust is Prime, his almost identical counterpart from a divergent reality. Baskets (season 3 on FX)Chip Baskets has always dreamed of being a classically trained clown. After flunking out of French clown college -- probably due to his inability to understand French -- he returns home to Bakersfield, California, where he moves in with his mother, Christine, bickers with his twin brother, Dale, longs for his sophisticated Parisian ex-wife, and continues to pursue his professional clowning dream, with the assistance of his friend/assistant/insurance adjuster, Martha. Zach Galifianakis stars as both Chip and Dale, with Louie Anderson as Christine and Martha Kelly in the role of Martha. Another Period (season 3 on Comedy Central)Before others staked a claim, there was one American family who stood for all that was spoiled, shameless and stupid. It's the Bellacourts, and as Rhode Island's first family of the Gilded Age, the insanely ridiculous, debaucherous clan have more servants than relatives, and days are filled with money, sex, drugs and more money. With nothing of substance to offer their fellow citizens, the Bellacourts are solely concerned with how they look, what parties they attend, and -- in the case of sisters Lillian and Beatrice, especially -- becoming super famous. Co-executive producers Natasha Leggero and Riki Lindhome star as Lillian and Beatrice, respectively. Waco (miniseries on Paramount Network, formerly called Spike)In February 1993, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raids David Koresh's Branch Davidian compound, a small religious community located just outside of Waco, Texas, triggering a drawn-out gun battle that kills four ATF agents and six civilians and wounds dozens more people. After a 51-day standoff, the conflict ends when an FBI assault leads to a fire that engulfs the compound, killing 76 Branch Davidians, including Koresh. Told from the perspectives of those who were there, including chief FBI negotiator Gary Noesner and survivor David Thibodeau, the six-part scripted series "Waco" dramatizes one of the most misunderstood stories in American history. Altered Carbon (season 1 on Netflix)More than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by new technology, leading to human bodies being interchangeable and death no longer being permanent. Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Tamara Taylor of Netflix's Altered Carbon. Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned -- on ice -- for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder ... that of Bancroft himself. Canadian-born Tamara Taylor first caught the eyes of fans with a recurring role on the '90s series Party of Five. She would make numerous appearances on various shows over the coming years, but Taylor's next big break came in 2006, with a starring role on the crime series Bones playing Dr. Camille Saroyan.

Before the release of the brand-new Netflix series, the guys go back to the source with Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 postcyberpunk novel, "Altered Carbon." In part one of their coverage they try something a little different by beginning with a robust NON-SPOILER section for anyone curious about the novel but wanting to stay unspoiled for the series. They begin by talking about the author’s bio and career, the premise of the novel’s tech, the background of main character Takeshi Kovacs, and the mystery surrounding the murder of Laurens Bancroft. They end the non-spoiler talk with a debate about the philosophical questions raised by the sleeve-tech in the novel. In the second part of the episode, they get into plot and describe Kovacs’ investigation and all the salacious things he uncovers, discuss some particularly graphic scenes, then end by theorizing on who will ultimately be revealed to be the murderer. As people have been away and tied up with work this week, it's the perfect opportunity to air an interview I did recently with the author Richard Morgan. Richard is a sci-fi and fantasy writer, who's probably best know for his Philip K. Dick Award winning sci-fi novel Altered Carbon, which went on to spawn the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy. He's 2nd trilogy 'A Land Fit for Heroes' moved him into fantasy, and is currently being turned into an interactive gamebook by Liber Primus Games. If you don't know Richard from his excellent novels, he also wrote the Syndicate reboot for EA in 2012, Crysis 2 for Crytek in 2011, and was largely responsible for rebooting Marvel's Black Widow with his two six issue miniseries he wrote for the character. You can find out more about the Land Fit for Heroes gamebook here, and more about Richard here. Geektown Radio : Author Richard Morgan Special!
