Jay re-read Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline. Despite not having the same umph as the first book, there were some good moments that celebrated the pop culture we grew up with. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay slingshots back and forth with The Time Traveler's Wife (2009). In this fairly unique take on time travel, Henry (Eric Bana) has a genetic condition that causes him to boomerang through time. Which makes it pretty hard for Clare (Rachel McAdams) to have an engaging marriage, (or at least throw a good surprise party). Read his article on RetroZap.com. Jay and Shua are celebrating Mattel's 80th anniversary by taking a nostalgic deep dive into the legendary toy company's history. From Barbie's dream house to Hot Wheels' epic car chases, they explore the toys that made generations of kids skip school, forget chores, and sometimes go through barrels of batteries playing Electronic Football. With a side of humor and a sprinkle of nostalgia, they also discuss the evolution of Mattel's lineup, including the iconic He-Man action figures—because nothing says "childhood" like battling over who had the better sword. The guys also dig into some classics too, like the 3D magic of the View-Master (which was basically your first VR headset, minus the headache) and the intense, back-and-forth slugfests of Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots. As they chat about Mattel's rise to toy royalty, they'll take you on a wild ride through their most cherished memories, sharing funny stories about toys that taught us all how to "play hard" and sometimes "play dirty." Get ready for a rollercoaster of laughs and memories as they celebrate the legacy of a company that's been keeping kids (and adults) entertained for eight decades. Did we mention one of your favorite Mattel toys? Which ones shaped your childhood? Laci and Matt are at war with each other like the gunters are at war with the villainous Nolan Sorrento in the Oasis of Ready Player One. And it's all because they can't agree on this movie! Is this the first BAD Spielberg movie the show has covered this summer? Or is it another classic? First we get into the history of the movie, starting with the career of novelist Ernist Cline. From his humble beginnings as a slam poet in Austin to his screenwriting career working with Harvey Weinstein on the film Fanboys, to writing Ready Player One and creating bidding wars for both the publishing and movie rights, Ernie is a true American success story. And then he got Steven Spielberg to direct the thing! Wow! Will Spielberg use this opportunity to do some crucial self-examination about the role he has played in shaping pop culture, in emphasizing nostalgia and sentiment and comfort amongst moviegoers everywhere, keeping them in a perpetual state of adolescence? Or does he just use the cool toys and giant budget to make a really cool-looking movie? Then: The movie itself. Has there been a wetter paper towel of a leading man than Tye Sheridan? Future megastar Olivia Cooke is right there, man. Give her the reigns. Anyway, enough editorializing. This episode is having some Ready Player FUN. Ernest Cline sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. He shares the values he looks to instill into his kids as they grow up. Ernest and I talk about what his kids have taught him about life. After that we talk about his new book, Bridge To Bat City. He talks about the inspiration about writing that book and why he got into a new genre of books. We also talk about Ready Player One and Armada. Plus we geek out together talking about the things we collect and movies and shows we love. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five. About Ernest Cline Ernest Cline is a #1 New York Times bestselling novelist, screenwriter, father, and full-time geek. He is the author of the novels Ready Player One and Armada and co-screenwriter of the film adaptation of Ready Player One, directed by Steven Spielberg. His books have been published in over fifty countries and have spent more than 100 weeks onThe New York Times bestsellers list. He lives in Austin, Texas, with his family, a time-traveling DeLorean, and a large collection of classic video games. About Bridge To Bat City From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ernest Cline comes a mostly true tall tale about an unexpected friendship between a young girl and a music-loving colony of bats. After losing her mother, thirteen-year-old Opal moves in with her uncle Roscoe on the family farm. There, Opal bonds with Uncle Roscoe over music and befriends a group of orphaned, music-loving bats. But just as the farm is starting to feel like home, the bats' cave is destroyed by a big mining company with its sights set on the farmland next.If Opal and the bats can fit in anywhere, it's the nearby city of Austin, home to their favorite music and a host of wonderfully eccentric characters. Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Oriana's choice of topic: Silicon Valley's misinterpretation and fetishization of Tolkien. Tolkien of course lived in a time where computers were mostly huge rooms containing one machine or two that he doubtless considered little more than another example of why the industrial age didn't suit his mindset on many fronts. But in the half-century since his death the PC era up through smartphones and TikTok have made the industry one of the biggest and most influential in the world – which is the problem. The issues discussed are hardly limited to them but two of its most well-known and notorious avatars in recent years, Peter Thiel and his protege Palmer Luckey, have among other things named various businesses of questionable use and worth (at best) after characters and terms from Tolkien's legendarium as part of their general quest to own everything and be everywhere whether one likes it or not. There is, however, the small problem that they think they might be Aragorns when it's much more accurate to call them Saruman and Wormtongue. What are the roots of Thiel's own particular worldview in particular, shaped by colonial legacies of the kind that Tolkien himself notably loathed? What are the various poisonous ironies of naming particular businesses after certain Tolkien-derived terms considering their original meaning and what they now represent? Can the Tolkien Estate themselves actually do anything about the use and misuse of such terms to start with? And why in the world did Thiel think that a good choice of quote from Tolkien was in fact a quote from an original Rankin-Bass song instead?Show Notes.Jared's doodle. Patrick reacts and discusses to clips from the new Weaponized Podcast episode featuring Author Ernest Cline who wrote the infamous book 'Ready Player One'. Ernest drops some interesting UFO bombshells in my opinion especially talking about a UFO like "Santa's Sleigh" that US has in it's possession. We cover 5 points: 1: “Santa's Sleigh” like UFO 2: New York Times 2017 Article 3: UFO summary 4: George Knapp's UFO story 5: Ernest Cline's DeLoreans
Ernest Cline is the visionary best-selling author of Ready Player One, Ready Player Two, Armada, and the upcoming Bridge to Bat City, as well as the co-screenwriter of the blockbuster movie Ready Player One directed by Steven Spielberg, and co-founder of Readyverse Studios. Cline is a brilliant novelist and screenwriter whose books have earned worldwide acclaim and a legion of devoted fans around the world. Cline's first visionary bestseller Ready Player One was eerily accurate prediction of where AI and virtual reality tech are taking us. Cline worked with legendary director Steven Spielberg in creating a mega-hit movie based on the novel. Cline's deep research into UFO history and extraterrestrial scenarios culminated in a second best selling novel about an alien invasion, which has also been optioned for a future film. A sequel, Ready Player Two, topped bestseller lists in 2023 and is in development to become a film. In this bonus episode of Weaponized, George and Jeremy travel to Austin Texas to visit their pal and to tour his astonishing collection of iconic pop culture collectibles, movie memorabilia, and a vast library UFO and sci-fi books, films, and collectibles. Ernie also revealed his soon to be released next book, based on a true story from his home town. It's a fun peek into the life of one of America's best writers, sort of an episode of "UFO Cribs”. Michael Hoffman, or “Hoff” as most know him, is the co-founder and CEO at IQXR, a company solving the hardest problems facing global-scale, enterprise XR deployments, and doing so with an open source approach.Previously Michael spent nearly a decade working with the Microsoft Hololens team. He was a Principal Engineering Lead at Microsoft for a couple of years, left to be the founding partner of Object theTheory, where he and his team worked with enterprises to leverage AR and VR technologies, often in combination with IoT and AI/Machine Learning. And then he went back to Microsoft for a couple of years to lead the development of the Mixed Reality Toolkit (MRTK) project.Earlier in his career, Michael worked in software engineering roles at Google, Nike, and several startups. In this conversation, Hoff describes how 3D visualization, with AR and VR technologies, changes our comprehension of digital information, contributes to the value of having your hands free to interact with the world, and enables better efficiency and better insights.Within the enterprise setting, Hoff notes it's relatively easy to get to a pilot and prove value, but it's really difficult to deliver that value at scale. We go on to talk about making AR/VR solutions viable within an enterprise setting at scale, including challenges around visual and audio haptics, working both online and offline, and other key bits of plumbing, as well as the misconceptions that many enterprises have about the technology. We also discuss:- the rationale and corporate strategy for building open source solutions, - the role of AI in accelerating software and content development,- the art of the AI prompt, and- how Apple Vision Pro accelerates the market.Hoff wraps up by discussing neurodivergence and his own growing awareness and acceptance of the challenges and benefits of neurodivergence for both his children and himself. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com. Steven Spielberg. Colossus of film. Father of the modern blockbuster. Gamer. Ernest Cline. Author. Dreamweaver. Redditor. United, these two titans bring us the ultimate in entertainment product, that last movie ever made, the one where a guy jumps Doc Brown's DeLorean over the Iron Giant while RX-78 Gundam Fights Mechagodzilla. This week, the gang tackles the film that defines the death of cinema: Ready Player One. Nicole has an unprecedented meltdown over the abuse of Kubrick, Stu dissects the truly terrible source material, and Cole theorizes on how this nadir of insular pop-culture self-referentialism led Spielberg from a career nadir to the recent highs of 'The Fabelmans'. All this and much more in a tubular epic winsauce episode that you don't want to miss! Special thanks to Kris Wolfheart for his Dramatic Reading of Nerd Porn Auteur. Please check out his channel! Who will be the first to collect all the keys, clear all the gates, and find Halliday's Easter egg?
Acomi and Turk182 express their disappointment in Steven Spielberg's silver screen adaptation of Ernest Cline's sci-fi, nostalgia trip Ready Player One. What should have been a crowd pleasing feast for the eyes and geeky filled hearts, was an enormous let down of biblical proportions. Acomi and Turk compare the aspects of the Ready Player One novel, versus the movie. They discuss the look of the world inside the Oasis and outside, the depth and growth of the characters, changes in the story due to the different narrative, artistic and licencing changes, and events that were changed, left out, or completely new to the film. Join Acomi and Turk as they breakdown the movie and explain their venomous reactions during the Let's Watch!. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #StevenSpielberg #Spielberg #Amblin #AmblinEntertainment #ReadyPlayerOne #ErnestCline #LetsWatch Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Acomi and Turk182 take of their VR goggles and breathe a sigh of relief that the real world is nothing like the one depicted in the movie Ready Player One. Where the world virtual reality world of the Oasis as shown in the Ready Player One movie isn't much different than the version described in the novel, everything else is real world garbage. The story, characters, and events have been drastically altered from the novel to the point that they're unrecognizable on the big screen. Everything that made Ernest Cline's book amazing is stripped to a soulless display of special effects and celluloid thin characters. Join Acomi and Turk for a joyless venture into a visual translation of something that had the potential to be an indescribable spectacle of a VR world built on the love of the 1980s. But, turned into a frustrating experience of heartbreak and disappointment. This is Ready Player One the movie. Acomi and Turk182, along the occasional special guest, provide running commentary of awfulsome movie and TV shows. The hosts select movies that either one, or both, have never seen. All jokes and comments are improvised. NO PREPARED JOKES OR COMMENTS! During recording, the movies are watched at a low volume and with the subtitles on. Viewers may want to turn subtitles on as well to enhance the viewing experience. So, cue up the audio, ready the movie, and hit play when we say so. Note: This video is the commentary recorded by Acomi and Turk182. The commentary can be enjoyed on its own, but if you want to experience the Let's Watch! in all its glory, you'll need your own copy of the movie. Most of the movies viewed can be streamed online for free. For an extra dose of disappointment, go to IMdB and check out the alternate movie posters. #OMTWF #KorovaEntertainment #LetsWatch #LW #Acomi #Turk182 #awfulsome #ReadyPlayerOne #ReadyPlayerOnemovie #ReadyPlayerOnenovel #ErnestCline #80s #1980s Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Ready Player One was adapted for the screen five years ago. This week Jay and Shua look back at what worked, what was changed, and the fun of going to the OASIS. Plus, we create our own Easter egg challenges with our pop-culture obsessions on Enjoy Stuff! What would your pop-culture references be if you created an Easter egg challenge in the OASIS? Come with us in a world of pure imagination as we look back at the movie Ready Player One. This week he watched the surprises in Martin McDonagh's Banshees of Inisherin. He enjoyed the themes and symbolism in the wild story of two friends whose relationship suddenly changes and fingers are threatened. Shua surprises absolutely nobody by enjoying season 3 of The Mandalorian. It's feeling very Star Wars to him. What do you think? Enjoy Movies! In 2011, Ernest Cline released his homage to the pop-culture he grew up with, Ready Player One. This dystopian world became obsessed with everything 80's after rich, white guy James Halliday dies and offers his fortune to anyone who can crack the clues in his contest. It became very popular among Generation X and we were all excited when it was announced that it was going to be adapted into a movie, and directed by Steven Spielberg even! But how could they get the juicy reference bits from the book into a film? The result was the 2018 movie of the same name. First we break down some of the major changes from the book to the film and why we think they made those changes. Then we talk about whether the movie was a successful adaptation from different points of view. And then we create our very own Easter egg hunt. What pop-culture references would we use for the world to solve? We'll lay it all out for you so you can try to solve the riddles of the egg. Did you enjoy the Ready Player One Movie? What pop-culture references would be in your contest? First person that emails me with the subject line, “First to the key!” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Crafty Adventures I finished my January-June Covid Photo Book/Scrapbook that I made in Shutterfly and ordered it! I started working on second half of the year. So grateful I journaled during 2020 as it will likely end up being one of the wildest year of our lives. Knitting in Passing Riley texted me that she's ready for her next knitting project. I picked her up and then we picked up Millie, at Hattie's request. We had a low key night at home, and went to the Children's Museum the next morning. Hattie was overtired, so we drove her home and then Millie and I met up with my parents to head back into Boston for Riley's dance competition. Mom, Dad, Jeff, Millie, Garret and I all went to an early dinner between her performances. Monday night at a local Irish pub listening to live music for Megg's birthday. Last Saturday, Megg dropped off Oisín to work with Dan, and we all had breakfast before Megg and I went off for a hike. We got back to the car just as the rain started. Millie's Bucket List with a Twist item was to ride horses with Grammy in the snow. It nearly snowed on Saturday May 11, but it was too warm. Thankfully, the rain stopped while we were inside the barn at Nancy & Roger's house, meeting the animals. Our friend Terri is friends with Nancy and Roger who kindly and enthusiastically agreed to help make Millie check off her bucket list item. We met all of the animals, most of whom were rescued. They have a very silly goat, some miniature horses (Goliath, Delilah & Princess Buttercup), 2 Gypsy Vanners (Zoe & her mother Dulcie) and another large horse, Scooter. Mom and I each rode Zoe and Millie rode Dulcie. Garret's 13th birthday sleepover. We went to Altitude to jump on the trampolines, to Panera for dinner and then he taught me how to edit videos using the CapCut app. Quote of the Week In our concern for others, we worry less about ourselves.
