Amartya, Varun, and Cris (re)convene in a divergent manel to tackle Steven Spielberg's association with science fiction. This second in a series of three episodes looks at "Minority Report", "War of the Worlds", and "Ready Player One", and how Spielberg (paired here with cinematographer Janusz Kamiński) uses them to tackle real-world politics. References to Bollywood are a must, so Tom Cruise gets compared to John Abraham at some point, do not ask why. The final part will cover "Disclosure Day" and how it exists in conversation (or not) with these texts. Bonus discussion on our recent (terrible and not so much) excursions to the theatre had to be shared, so do enjoy that as well.MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL 3 MOVIESTIME CODESIntro (& Recent Theatrical Experiences) - [00:00 - 11:37]"Minority Report" - [11:37 - 41:18]"War of the Worlds" - [41:18 - 01:05:04]"Ready Player One" - [01:05:04 - 01:35:55]Outro - [01:35:55 - 01:37:05]Do hit 'Follow' on Spotify if you haven't already to help the podcast reach more people!Follow our Instagram page: https://instagram.com/queenisdead.filmpodcast.You can follow us on Letterboxd at -CRIS: https://letterboxd.com/crislim/.VARUN: https://letterboxd.com/varunoakbhakay/.AMARTYA: https://letterboxd.com/amartya/.
God helg! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Zapraszamy!

What happens if the game really is better than real life?In this episode I dive into 'Ready Player One' by Ernest Cline and explore whether a virtual paradise can outshine the messy real world. I outline the OASIS, the 80s-saturated Easter egg hunt and the Gunter vs corporate showdown then share why the novel's early gritty realism hooked me but later lost its footing as coincidences piled up and the real world became improbably rosy. While the tech flourishes feel contemporary and the ride is undeniably fun (especially for gaming and 80s pop-culture tragics) the lack of deeper philosophical bite kept it from being more than entertaining sci‑fi for me. I touch on Cline's screenwriter sensibilities and how the book's cinematic qualities likely helped its rapid path to film. In this episode of the Hugonauts we're breaking down what truly defines great Young Adult fiction and answering the ultimate question: do these books actually hold up when you read them for the first time as an adult? We look at the core guidelines of YA literature—from exploring the human condition through a young protagonist's eyes to (ideally) teaching profound stuff that resonates beyond teenhood. We count down the absolute best YA sci-fi books and YA fantasy recommendations. We dive into legendary dystopian hits like The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, masterclass sci-fi like Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and Red Rising by Pierce Brown, and classic fantasy staples like Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass, and C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia. But we don't just look at the masterpieces. We also separate the true YA novels from books that are actually meant for middle-grade kids (like The Giver, Redwall, and The Phantom Tollbooth). Finally, we tackle the controversial "duds" of the genre. Why are massive bestsellers like The Maze Runner, Divergent, and Scythe so incredibly popular, and why did they fall totally flat for us? Grab your reading list and let's find out which books are actually worth your time! No spoilers anywhere in this episode. Ashwin, Amartya, Dhruv, Varun, and Cris convene in a divergent manel to tackle Steven Spielberg's association with science fiction. This first in a series of three episodes looks at "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial", and "A.I. Artificial Intelligence". Minor digressions to address the cinematic spectacles known as "Jaani Dushman — Ek Anokhi Kahani" and "Koi Mil Gaya" aside, this is one of the saner offerings from the QID studio, all thanks to host and chief Spielberg champion Varun. The second episode will revolve around "Minority Report", "War of the Worlds", and "Ready Player One", and the series will close with "Disclosure Day", the latest film by the Father of the Blockbuster, back in the director's chair after a hiatus of four years, the longest time he has taken between films in fifty-two years of feature filmmaking.MAJOR SPOILERS FOR ALL 3 MOVIES & MINOR ONES FOR "THE FABELMANS"TIME CODESIntros to Spielberg's Sci-Fi Cinema - [00:00 - 17:13]"Close Encounters of the Third Kind" - [17:13 - 01:25:41]"E.T. What if your favorite “adaptation”… isn't really an adaptation at all?In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim counts down the Top 20 MOST Unfaithful Book-to-Screen Adaptations, ranking them from “noticeably different” to “they just kept the title and made something else.”We're diving into films and shows that:* Rewrite entire plots* Transform (or replace!) core characters* Flip the original themes on their head* Shift tone so dramatically they feel like a different genreFrom The Golden Compass and I Am Legend… to World War Z, The Hobbit Trilogy, Ready Player One, Foundation, and the absolutely wild case of The Lawnmower Man—this list explores just how far adaptations can drift from their source material. Some of these are still great. Some… not so much. But all of them raise the same question:

Matt and Eric enter the Oasis, chatting up Spielberg's READY PLAYER ONE - a movie that, much like its villain, is a corporate thug being fed 80s trivia in his ear in order to relate to an unhealthy fandom.
Hour 1: ‘Melrose Place' actor dies at 57. Happy 420! There are plenty of movies to choose from to celebrate: Reefer Madness, Jay and Silent Bob, Pink Floyd's ‘The Wall.” Vinnie can't believe Cheech and Chong aren't on the list of the best. If you want a scary movie, the kid in the new ‘The Mummy' movie will do. ‘Project Hail Mary' is still raking in the big bucks. Plus, Vinnie started Dan Levy's new show ‘Big Mistakes.' Here's what we all think. What do you know about the iron maiden? No, NOT the band. Vinnie's putting a stop to the Napoleon propaganda. Then, Sarah reminds us of one of Vinnie's most embarrassing moments. Hour 2: The Jennifer Hudson Show has been renewed for a 5th season. Dylan Sprouse is in the news for tackling a potential home intruder in his back yard. Bob's the only one who knows who this is. Drew Barrymore is giving up bras. Sarah and Vinnie can't wait to have Ozzy from Survivor on the show tomorrow. Californians are still buying their doobie on the streets. Ever been in a hot air balloon? A skydiver crashed into a scoreboard this weekend at the Virginia Tech spring football game. Crawfish ice cream has become this Texas shop's #1 menu item. Would you try it? Hour 3: Cher is a Grandma! Turns out she has been – Sarah has all the insane gossip. Ryan Reynolds opens up about Blake Lively's case… sort of. Natalie Portman is pregnant with her 3rd kid at 44. Eddie Murphy is being celebrated! Mike Myers helped do it right. There's too much TV, but here's some more to watch! Apple is one step closer to Ready Player One, and a young woman has died in the process. A humanoid robot is faster than a person. Is this impressive? Put that trophy next to your other trophies. Italy is the first country to give paid time off if your pet is sick. A Chevron executive suggests people drive less amid high gas prices… Thanks for the wise words. Hour 4: While filming a Netflix documentary, two former One Direction bandmates allegedly ended up in a physical altercation. Coachella Weekend 2: Sabrina Carpenter brought out Madonna; Addison Rae brought out Olivia Rodrigo; Somber brought out Billy Idol and Steve Stevens; The Strokes got political. Outside of the desert, Indigo Girls are still touring despite major health issues. Ice Spice was in a bizarre fight at McDonalds. Let's go with doobage. Vinnie's telling us about a bed with really strict rules.

Dennis is joined via Zoom by Gabe Rivas Gomez, the writer of the visually stunning and very moving new play Level Up! which is about a trans tween named Desi whose quest to be who she really is takes her into a spectacular and dangerous video game world. Gabe talks about where the original inspiration came from, finding the trans actress to play Desi, Mathias Brinda, several workshop productions ago and watching her grow up before his eyes and the technical challenges of trying to depict a video game on stage. He also talks about producing this show at a time when trans youth are under attack and what the reactions from audiences have been like so far. Other topics include: Gabe's career as a college professor and whether today's kids really are alright, taking inspiration from the book Ready Player One, what his own kids think of the show, his obsession with Lego and why some scenes just have to hurt. https://www.latinotheaterco.org/levelup

Journey back to a time of loincloth-clad heroes, questionable special effects, and magical quests as Enjoy Stuff dives into the wild world of 80s sword and sorcery films. Shua and Jay explore the legends, the laughs, and the low-budget chaos of this unforgettable fantasy era. From evil sorcerers to heroic barbarians, we celebrate the movies that tried to ride the fantasy wave and sometimes hilariously missed. Grab your glaive and prepare for adventure! News The new Masters of the Universe trailer makes the film look pretty exciting The first two episodes of Maul: Shadow Lord are now available, with a total of 10 episodes releasing two per week through May 4th. A PAC-MAN themed restaurant called "Chomp Stop" is open at Angel Stadium, bringing arcade-style snacks and nostalgia. Maxell has reintroduced a modern cassette player with Bluetooth, USB-C charging, and that classic retro vibe. Alan Tudyk will be inducted as a Disney Legend alongside notable names like Bob Iger and Lin-Manuel Miranda at D23 in August 2026. Actor James Tolkan, known for roles in Back to the Future and Top Gun, has passed away at age 81. Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay has been diving into The Anatomy of Genres by John Truby, a deep exploration of storytelling structure that breaks down what makes different genres tick. He's been enjoying how it analyzes narrative "beats" and provides insight into crafting compelling stories across multiple genres. Shua has been getting creative with sculpting, using leftover clay to craft a fun bobble-head of a school mascot. He also created a Mother's Day gift by sculpting figures of his two dogs. Sci-Fi Saturdays - This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay spotlights Ready Player One (2018), a visually exciting adaptation of Ernest Cline's novel. While it differs from the book, the film still delivers a fun and accessible dive into a pop culture-filled dystopia, making it a worthwhile watch for both fans and newcomers. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. This week he's added some new locations from Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy the Loin Cloth! Step into a misty realm of magic, monsters, and muscles as Shua and Jay return to the age of sword and sorcery films. Inspired by the success of early fantasy hits, the 1980s unleashed a wave of low-budget adventures filled with epic quests, dramatic villains, and plenty of unintentional comedy. We explore what made these films so memorable, even when they weren't exactly "good." Along the way, they discuss a variety of films that defined (or tried to define) the genre, from cult classics to bizarre oddities. And Jay plays a fun game that challenges him to distinguish between barbarian names and heavy metal bands. What's your favorite sword and sorcery movie? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, "Crush your enemies" will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com
It's a film made up entirely of pop culture Easter eggs, centred around a literal Easter egg hunt and released on Easter weekend eight years ago, so we thought it would be fitting to give you a little Easter 2026 treat and release our episode on READY PLAYER ONE a week early. But we're not heading into the Oasis alone: we're joined by Em, the fab host of Verbal Diorama, to wade (Watts) through the smorgasbord of references, the film's long road to realisation and its ultimate message about the real world vs. the virtual one. A playful instance of Spielberg pondering the darker side of his generational impact, or a soulless piece of garbage designed to validate the stunting of our minds? Can it be two things? Plug in and find out!You can follow Em on Instagram at @empoweredstuff. You can follow Verbal Diorama at @verbaldiorama and listen wherever you get your podcasts.Follow the podcast on Twitter, Bluesky and Instagram and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Get in touch with us either via socials or email rambinaboutamblin@gmail.com.Ramblin is created and produced by Andrew Gaudion and Joshua Glenn. A special thanks as always to Emily Tatham for the artwork, and Robert J. Hunter-Clayton & Greg Sheffield for the theme music.
Drop a quarter in the slot and dig into the nontraditional career of Chrissie Scelsi who specializes in the law of video gaming. Scelsi forged her own way, untangling the intersection of entertainment, marketing, technology, and law. Games aren't all fun and games. Scelsi deals with licensing, advertising, intellectual property, transactions, e-sports, content clearance, privacy law, and even influencer relations. “I lean something new every day, and that's great,” she says. Throughout her career, she's become a self-described legal Swiss army knife (and she's a master at Pokémon Go). Among the topics she encounters both in her practice and as the first woman president of the Video Game Bar Association is the impact of AI, from game development to game play. Working independently, hear how Scelsi has found her community, networks with others, and keeps current on the latest issues affecting not only legal aspects but also trends across the video gaming industry, an industry expected to approach $200 billion in annual revenue this year. Questions or ideas about solo and small practices? Drop us a line at NewSolo@legaltalknetwork.com. Topics: Have a passion? There's a legal field for that! Hear how guest Chrissie Scelsi turned her love for entertainment and video gaming into a full-time practice. Video gaming is big business not just in the U.S. but around the world, and that means a web of legal needs to help game developers and marketers navigate copyright, legal protections, liability, and intellectual property issues. In a rapidly evolving field, it's important for solo practitioners and consultants to build a community through associations, conferences, and networking to share ideas and understand ever-changing legal issues and challenges. In our final entry in our "movies about video games that aren't based on video games" we take a look at the be all and end all entry defined by those very specific parametres, 2018's Ready Player One. In a future bogged down in nostelgia to the detriment of a crumbling society it's up to a group of plucky internet savy individuals to unlock the mystery of the Oasis, a Virtual Reality space where your wildest dreams can come true. If your wildiest dreams are like, walking around and Batman is there or the Delorian or whatever. Probably the most unusual choice for Steven Spielberg to direct but hey, he certainly threw a lot of stuff in it. Peter and Eden watch 1981's Escape from New York and land, predictably, on opposite sides: Eden had a blast, Peter was fighting sleep and checking the runtime. Before getting there, they spend a significant chunk of the episode on a surprise Neurosis album drop — An Undying Love for a Burning World — that apparently derailed any other listening either of them did for a week and a half. They also work through a stack of new metal releases, Eden's ongoing Continuity Comics deep dive (cliffhangers with no resolution, going all the way down), and the inevitable sidebar about Ready Player One being one of the worst things ever committed to paper.SHOW NOTESContinuity Comics / Death Watch 2000 — Eden is deep into the indie comics boom-and-bust era. Death Watch 2000 (20 issues, zero through nineteen) ends on a cliffhanger because issue 20 never came out. The follow-up crossover, Rise of Magic, also ends on a cliffhanger — because the company went under. Eden is reading Ms. Mystic through all of this.Dungeon Crawler Carl — Peter is on book five (nearly six) of the LitRPG series. Eden remains skeptical on principle, largely due to the covers, a detailed bit about the Mantar illustration, and a Chuck Tingle tangent.Project Hail Mary (film) — Peter saw it in St. George during spring break and liked it. Eden knows the twist, is annoyed it was in the trailer, and delivers the hot take that the film is secretly about "exospecies gay love" — which, they argue, makes Andy Weir's claims to apolitical writing somewhat complicated.New metal releases rundown — Peter ran down a week where six metal albums dropped at once: Exodus's Goliath (disappointing

We're stepping into the OASIS to talk about Ready Player One—a novel that turned video games, '80s pop culture, and virtual reality into a full-blown modern myth. Whether you see it as a love letter to geek culture, a warning about digital escapism, or a nostalgia-fueled scavenger hunt, Ready Player One left a lasting mark on how we think about gaming, identity, and the future of virtual worlds. Let's power up, log in, and see why this story still sparks conversation years after its release. (May contain some explicit language.)
