Episode Notes ** Did you know you can support my podcast for as little as $1 a month? You can do that by heading over to my Patreon HERE!! My guest this week is George Jackson. George Jackson is a Nashville-based fiddle player and the 2022 IBMA Instrumentalist Of The Year Momentum Award Winner, who performs as a band leader and fiddler for hire with artists such as The Jacob Jolliff Band, Jake Blount, Tall Poppy String Band, The Local Trio, Front Country, Peter Rowan, Missy Raines, Charm City Junction and others. Born in New Zealand, George grew up in a musical family and first heard bluegrass music around the age of 14, immediately falling in love with the style he started trying to work out how to play it from recordings and from mentors in New Zealand. Moving to Australia as a 16-year-old, he won the Australian National Bluegrass Championship on fiddle three times and toured the country with his bluegrass band, "The Company", playing all the major folk festivals on the Australian circuit. As a resident of Nashville and the USA from 2016, George has released three albums of fiddle tunes, "Time and Place" in 2019 and "Hair & Hide" in 2021 and most recently “George Jackson's Local Trio” with Eli Broxham and Frank Evans in 2023. He was awarded first place in the Mike Auldridge tune composition award by the DC bluegrass union in both 2019 and 2021 for his tunes "Chapel Hill Deer Stalk" and "Neighbor Mike" respectively. He also sparked a viral fiddle tune frenzy with his composition "Dorrigo", when hundreds of musicians learned the tune and posted videos of themselves playing it online, becoming known as the "#dorrigochallenge". In his free time, George loves to watch Star Trek and cook food at home, with recent obsessions in Italian and Cajun fare. He loves Swedish fiddle music and —fun fact— he was a competitive Highland dancer until the age of 21. Episode Notes **Did you know you can support my podcast for as little as $1 a month? You can do that by heading over to my Patreon HERE!! Well, this week is a special one! My guests are Mike Guggino, Sheri Mignano Crawford, and Nino Vicari. They have recently collaborated on a new collection of Giovanni Vicari's compositions titled “Dances for Mandolin” available HERE! SONOMA, CALIF. — Giovanni Vicari: Dances for Mandolin is a new publication celebrating the artistry and legacy of Italian mandolin virtuoso Giovanni Vicari, now available to the global mandolin community. This thoughtfully curated collection features 53 of Vicari's original compositions, meticulously transcribed and edited by mandolinist Mike Guggino of the Grammy Award winning Steep Canyon Rangers and renowned author and educator Sheri Mignano Crawford. Drawing from Vicari's own handwritten scores generously provided by his son, Nino, this project represents a significant effort to preserve and share this music with contemporary audiences. Known for his expressive phrasing, technical brilliance, and lyrical sensibility, Giovanni Vicari's work occupies a unique and important place in the evolution of the mandolin. Mignano Crawford and Guggino approached the material with a deep respect for authenticity, striving to remain faithful to Vicari's original manuscripts while making the pieces accessible to today's players. The result is a collection that balances historical integrity with practical usability, offering clear, accurate transcriptions that invite both study and performance. From elegant, song-like melodies to virtuosic showpieces, these polkas, waltzes, mazurkas, tarantellas, and tangos highlight the depth and diversity of Vicari's compositional output. Guggino states: "We were already lucky enough to have so many of Giovanni Vicari's compositions recorded for posterity. Now with this published collection of the original scores, his music can be more easily studied and shared by mandolin players all around the world. This music speaks for itself. Our goal was to present Vicari's intentions as clearly as possible, allowing mandolinists to connect directly with his artistry." The Giovanni Vicari collection is now available and is expected to become an essential addition to mandolin libraries worldwide. We use a minimalistic approach by focusing on the fundamentals that make a great guitar, and eliminating all the unnecessary parts and manufacturing procedures that don't bring much value. Some of our parts and materials come from outside of the USA from partners who are experts in their field. We have partners located in the USA, Canada, China, Korea, Vietnam, and Brazil. Our production facility in the USA does all of the final building process starting with assembling the carbon fiber bodies to the carbon fiber soundboard and ending with stringing and final quality inspection. The eisbock story is a fun lore of beer myth, a hapless brewery employee left a barrel of doppelbock outside during a snowstorm in Germany and some of the beer froze, concentrating flavor and thus creating a whole new beer style. While the roots of this story may not wholly be true, it's a fun addition to a beer style made by distillation processes at its most base level. These beers are rare in the United States as you need special licenses to make them but in Europe, the rules are a bit different and in some European countries, these beers, not just eisbocks, have taken on a life of their own. And this is before we start talking about other drinks like the amazing ice cider made by freeze distillation. How does the freezing process work and what changes does it make to these drinks? This month on the All About Beer podcast, we talk to three guests with unique views on this chilly process. In this episode, why is it so hard to give away free stuff and what's it like to watch a pizza eating contest in person. College bowls might not be dead after all and there is one more game to play before we have to go into CFB hibernation until August. Lego gets an upgrade, kind of, KFC poutine, a cheeseburger in cheese, mute the announcers and more!
In the first episode of 2026, we talk the future of technology, and it seems to be AI and electronic vape dispensers. The college football playoff was a disaster for some and a success for others. The bowls have become more absurd, and we are absolutely here for it. A hash brown/mcflurry mashup, a hotdog and hamburger in one food item, snow beer, Netflix after dark maybe and more!
It's the annual Christmas episode! Recorded on Christmas night with a couple of extra guests and all the things we could drink. Any movie is a Christmas movie if you believe it is, bowl games are stepping it up with their trophies, CFP playoff, Legos, throw a football into a casket for money, a uniform from the past makes a comeback and more!
