As someone who has been in the spotlight for most of her life, Zoë Kravitz is still finding ways to navigate how she's perceived by her fans. "I know a lot of people will tell me after we get to know each other that I seem intimidating or standoffish, or like maybe I'm a bitch or something, which I think is funny 'cause I don't think that's who I am," she told Chioma on this week's episode of The Run-Through.Often regarded as a "cool girl" for her effortless style and unmistakable talent as an actress and director, Zoë admits she doesn't connect with that label. "I don't really know what the word cool even means anymore. We kind of throw these words around like cool and iconic, and I'm like, 'What are we talking about?' But it's funny. I think in some ways it's a compliment because, you know, maybe it just means that I seem relaxed and kind of comfortable in my own skin."Over the past year, the British Vogue cover star has made headlines with her rumored engagement to Harry Styles. But in this candid interview, she discusses her life beyond the headlines — from starring in an upcoming heist film, How to Rob a Bank, alongside her friend and frequent co-star Nicholas Hoult, as well as Anna Sawai, John C. Reilly, and Christian Slater, to what it was like debuting braids on the red carpet when no one else was doing it."I struggled with my hair a lot growing up, as many Black girls do for obvious reasons. It's not something we see a lot of — or at least when I was a kid, even more so — you don't see it a lot in mainstream fashion. And so it's been a real journey emotionally. Now you also see all kinds of people rocking braids. I think I'm in a place of self-love with my hair, which also feels so nice and liberating."Earlier in the show, Chioma sits down with Vogue contributors and collaborators on the Zoë Kravitz shoot: Julia Sarr-Jamois and Tish Weinstock. They discuss how the cover came together, plus the wellness trends they're obsessed with and what you should actually wear to a summer wedding. The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. Hosted by Chloe Malle, Head of Editorial Content, Vogue U.S.; Chioma Nnadi, Head of British Vogue; and Nicole Phelps, Director of Vogue Runway, each episode features the latest fashion news and exclusive designer and celebrity interviews. Today Griffey and Dandino hop a jet to a billionaire nightmare in Blink Twice. On this episode of Remainders we talk the 1989 skateboard detective movie Gleaming the Cube. Featuring a young Christian Slater, along with Tony Hawk, Gleaming the Cube goes beyond skateboard culture into a shaggy dog detective movie that captures early 90s youth culture with glorious vibes. We see if this is purely nostalgia or if it becomes a timeless piece of extreme sports in the movies.Other topics include the skating movie genre of the era, adjacent Bond-like movies targeted to youth, the Corey Haim and Corey Feldman era, Stranger Things events, further streaming woes, and physical media featuring the Rambo steel book collection and Student Bodies VHS.Songs of the WeekThree Angels by CJ RamoneHey Moon by John MausRemainders Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

You might remember the film Heathers from the late 80s. It starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, and it's stood the test of time as a cult favourite. Some have referred to it as the original Mean Girls. Well now the stage musical is making its way to New Zealand! Heathers the Musical will feature performers from New Zealand and Australia, and it'll be on at the James Hay Theatre in Christchurch from the 15th of May, followed by the Wellington Opera House from the 28th, and finally The Civic in Auckland from the 10th of June. Broadway, TV and film director Andy Fickman is helming the production, he chats to Jesse.

Major Vic Deakins (Travolta) and Captain Riley Hale (Slater) are testing nuclear weapons aboard a B-3 stealth bomber when Deakins betrays Hale, steals the nukes, and crashes the plane in the Utah desert. The military calls this worst-case scenario a “Broken Arrow” — code for a lost nuclear weapon. Now it's up to Hale and park ranger Terry Carmichael to stop Deakins before he detonates a nuclear weapon for profit. The result is a high-stakes cat-and-mouse chase filled with desert firefights, train battles, and classic 90s action one-liners. Remember Broken Arrow from the 90s? Yeah, we loved it. Mostly because it was the era when John Woo showed up in Hollywood and said, “What if everything got shot or exploded… in slow motion?” It's been a long time, so we went back to see if it still rules. John Travolta steals a couple of nukes, chews all the scenery, and holds America hostage, while Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis try to stop him before the budget for explosions runs out. Throw in peak 90s action nonsense, and we are absolutely ready to get our Broken Arrow ON.

Send us a textKatie and Bridget change their names to "Heather" as they re-watch the 80's cult classic: Heathers! It's a movie all about lots of teen angst, death, and suicide... But somehow nobody ever cries or is afraid or calls the police and we all just giggle while it's all happening!? Huh!?! Come along as we meet Veronica - aka NOT a Heather. When she meets new student JD - aka PSYCHO GUY - they begin a weird love affair that results in death... Lots and lots of death. But don't worry about the police or anything because all of these deaths are really just "suicides" and who needs DNA evidence anyway!? When Veronica gets fed up with JD's bullshit (a little too late in the game, but here we are), she decides to beat him at his own game and save the school from being blown up. Hi - how was this made into a Broadway musical!? We've got shoulder pads, 80's high school tropes, and absurdity in this weird, weird movie. Released in 1988, it stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, and Kim Walker.
In this episode of the No Film School Podcast, GG Hawkins speaks with writer-director Mary Bronstein about her searing psychological comedy-drama If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You. The film, starring Rose Byrne, Conan O'Brien, Christian Slater, and A$AP Rocky, explores the emotional breakdown of a woman navigating a mysterious illness in her child, an absentee husband, and a dangerously dependent relationship with her therapist. Premiering at Sundance and earning Rose Byrne a Silver Bear at Berlinale, the film has received critical acclaim for its raw emotional honesty and darkly comedic tone. Mary shares her deeply collaborative process with actors—particularly Byrne—and how performance, not just plot or technique, is the true core of her work. In this episode, No Film School's GG Hawkins and guest Mary Bronstein discuss... Mary's non-traditional journey into directing via acting and method training Why understanding acting is essential for directors The intense six-week collaborative prep process Mary and Rose Byrne underwent to develop the character of Linda How Mary tailors her directing style to unlock emotionally raw, performance-driven cinema The importance of maintaining artistic integrity over commercial conformity Why most screenwriting classes and formatting “rules” are, in Mary's words, “bullshit” The difference between directing for performance versus directing for aesthetics Mary's perspective on the resurgence of a new indie golden age Memorable Quotes: "If your performances are shit, your movie is shit to me." (12:49) "By the time we get to set, there is nothing you could do that would be wrong." (30:34) "My struggle is a creative one, not a commercial one." (42:08) "You don't wait for permission." Send us a textNuclear theft, a smirking supervillain, and a train sequence that refuses to quit—our rewatch of John Woo's Broken Arrow is a love letter to the wildest corners of '90s action. We kick off Todd's birthday stream with a question we can't stop asking: why do some “bad” movies age into perfect Friday-night fun? From the opening boxing match that telegraphs John Travolta's heel turn to the copper mine countdown and that infamous dummy shot, we break down what's silly, what's sharp, and what still absolutely rocks. We talk craft first—Woo's kinetic framing, musical stings that brand the villain, and the set-piece logic that prioritizes momentum over realism. Travolta's Deakins is a performance to savor: cigarette choreo, off-kilter affectations, and one-liners delivered like souvenirs. Christian Slater's Riley Hale adds human scale—witty, bruised, and just competent enough to keep the chase honest. We dig into how Graham Yost (Speed) trades tight architecture for sprawling fun, why the $20 running gag works as a narrative thread, and how the movie sneaks in actual smart bits—like using an EMP to flip a helicopter from hunter to wreckage.Along the way, we spotlight Samantha Mathis's Ranger Terry, Delroy Lindo's steady presence, and the movie's unapologetic '90s DNA: practical explosions, miniature mayhem, and VHS-ready quips. Yes, the physics are friendly, the Pentagon is plot-convenient, and helicopters can't aim—but the joy is real. And that train finale? Still a banger. We finish with what we're watching now (Marvel Zombies and Chad Powers) and tease next week's spooky-season pick: Freddy vs. Jason. If you're nostalgic for maximalist action or just crave a good-bad gem that plays great with friends, queue this one up, then hit play on our breakdown. The nightmarish stresses of motherhood and work are pushed to their absurdist extremes in Mary Bronstein's stellar piece of cinematic anxiety, starring a bravura Rose Byrne (Berlinale Silver Bear winner) as a woman on the verge of something far beyond a nervous breakdown. The 63rd New York Film Festival is presented in partnership with Rolex.

Jay loves the Christian Slater movie "Pump Up The Volume" so much that he impersonates the Hard Harry character throughout the show. Jacob and Bob always thought the movie was trash. | Jay invents the word "Qweenis" for the English speaking lexicon and owns the copywrites. | Bobby tells a story of when he met the acclaimed actress Chole Sevigny. It was years ago at a star-studded party by Louis C.K. It did not go well and he still cannot pronounce her name. *To hear the full show to go www.siriusxm.com/bonfire to learn more! The Ringer's Bill Simmons and Chris Ryan shave their heads and go on the lam after revisiting the 1985 “one-for-us” hall-of-famer ‘The Legend of Billie Jean,' starring Helen Slater, Christian Slater, and Keith Gordon. “Fair is fair! We didn't start this, we didn't mean it to happen, but we're not giving up until you pay. FAIR IS FAIR!” We watched “The Legend of Billie Jean” with Jesse Krempel, the wonderful host of “Cult Cinema Circle,” and we need to make an appointment with our hairstylist. This often overlooked gem from the 1980s chronicles outlaw teens on the run from the cops, their parents, and a sleazy businessman while going “viral” in a pre-social media world. Billie Jean, played by a drop-dead gorgeous Helen Slater, and her brother Binx (teeny-teen Christian Slater - no relation) run afoul of some local dirtbags who then steal and trash Binx's prize Honda Elite scooter. The stakes are actually sort of low - but it's the principle of the matter which makes Billie Jean and company local folk heroes. In a key moment, Billie Jean chops off her hair after being inspired by Joan of Arc; she is giving us some Vidal Sassoon, Sally Hershberger realness that would make Miss Tyra Banks herself proud. The kids in this movie are so ‘80s it would make the costumers on “Stranger Things” heads spin, and the soundtrack features the absolute BANGER “Invincible” by the legendary Pat Benatar. This week, in Falkner, Mississippi, a teen love triangle leads to some weird situations, when two friends go out with the same young lady. Everything seems solved when one of the teens disappears, leaving the other to date the girl. But the allure of sex causes a confession to murder, even though it's later recanted. Small town politics play a big role, with rumors flying, and people fleeing town, and a Christian Slater movie being made about the whole thing!!Along the way, we find out that some people in small towns are just plain cheap, that confessing to murder just to get some sex isn't a great plan, and that a certain four letter word can make some people do anything!!New episodes every Thursday!Donate at: patreon.com/crimeinsports or go to paypal.com and use our email: crimeinsports@gmail.comGo to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things Small Town Murder & Crime In Sports!Follow us on...twitter.com/@murdersmallfacebook.com/smalltownpodinstagram.com/smalltownmurderAlso, check out James & Jimmie's other show, Crime In Sports!
