In episode 15 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Ajay, Isi, and Joseph explore vampires in media, across genre and time! Welcoming back Joseph after a few episodes away, the episode kicks off with a games roundtable on Monster Hunter: Wilds (Capcom, 2025) and Pentiment (Obsidian, 2022), among other things. Then the group quickly dives into all things vampire. From Capital to Castelvania, the conversation analyzes the psychosexual, political economic, Orientalist, literary, genre, social, and even epidemiological metaphors, allegories, and tropes that haunt vampire stories and have made the figure of the vampire of such perennial—if shifting—fascination. How have vampire stories changed over time? Why do vampire stories shift and blur genre and valence? Why is the vampire such a perennial stand-in, across so many fields, often at the same time? Objects in consideration include: Carmilla (Sheridan Le Fanu, 1872), Dracula (Bram Stoker, 1897), Interview with the Vampire (novel: Anne Rice, 1976; TV adaptation: Rolin Jones, 2022-present; film: Neil Jordan, 1994), The Vampire Chronicles and Lives of the Mayfair Witches (Anne Rice), Nosferatu (F.W. Munrau, 1922), Nosferatu (Robert Eggers, 2024), A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (Ana Lily Amirpour, 2014), Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Joss Whedon, 1997-2003), Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Konami, 1997), Castlevania (anime, Warren Ellis, 1997-2021), Castlevania: Nocturne (anime, Clive Bradley, 2023-present), True Blood (TV series, Alan Ball, 2008-2014), The Twilight Saga (films 2008-2012, based on the novels by Stephanie Meyer), Midnight Mass, What We Do In The Shadows, and many more! Discover how the erotic, the economic, the exotic and even the epidemic all collide in the tragedies, comedies, horrors, nightmares, and fantasies that prove the vampire is a potent if changing symbol for fears, desires, and delirium.

ALISTAIR CROSS Alistair Cross' debut novel, The Crimson Corset, a vampiric tale of terror and seduction, was an immediate bestseller earning praise from veteran vampire-lit author, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and New York Times bestseller, Jay Bonansinga, author of The Walking Dead series. In 2012, Alistair joined forces with international bestseller, Tamara Thorne, and as Thorne & Cross, they write – among other things – the successful Gothic series, The Ravencrest Saga. Their debut collaboration, The Cliffhouse Haunting, was a bestseller. They are currently at work on their next solo novels and a new collaborative project. In 2014, Alistair and Tamara began the radio show, Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE!, which has featured such guests as Anne Rice of The Vampire Chronicles, Charlaine Harris of the Southern Vampire Mysteries and basis of the HBO series True Blood, Jeff Lindsay, author of the Dexter novels, Jay Bonansinga of The Walking Dead series, Laurell K. Hamilton of the Anita Blake novels, Peter Atkins, screenwriter of HELLRAISER 2, 3, and 4, worldwide bestseller V.C. Andrews, and New York Times best sellers Preston & Child, Christopher Rice, and Christopher Moore. TAMARA THORNE   Tamara Thorne's first novel was published in 1991. Since then she has written many more, including international bestsellers Haunted, Bad Things, Moonfall, and The Sorority. Tamara's interest in writing is lifelong, as is her fascination with the paranormal, occult, mythology and folklore. She's been an avid ghost story collector and writer all her life. Tamara's novels range from straight-out ghost stories to tales of witchcraft, conspiracies, UFOs, elemental forces, and vampires. No matter what topic she chooses, chances are you'll find a ghost or two lurking in the background. Today, she and her frequent collaborator, Alistair Cross, share their worlds and continue to write about ghosts and other mysterious forces. Whether collaborating or writing solo, there is no shortage of humor, sex, blood, and spookiness. Tamara also conducts real-life investigations of anomalous phenomena and has seen a number of odd things over the last twenty years. As an open-minded skeptic, she's spoken to many paranormal groups and has appeared on the television show, Ghost Adventures. Most recently, she and Alistair Cross went on a five-day investigation to an allegedly haunted cabin in California's Gold Country - an adventure that inspired The Cliffhouse Haunting. She has also been featured on many radio programs and in various newspapers on the topics of haunted places and local lore. A journalist by training, she occasionally writes about ghosts and hauntings for a syndicate of southern California newspapers, but her first love is, and has always been, telling ghost stories to make people scream. . . and laugh. Tamara and Alistair co-host Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE! every Thursday night on Blog Talk Radio. You can also visit Tamara on Twitter, Facebook, or at her blog.

We appreciate your continued patience in posting delays, we will be back on track next week. West Coast work travel meant a delay in editing. In today's episode Joann and Kristina welcome content creator and vampire superfan Black Girl Talk Fangs as we recap and react to S2E5 of Interview with the Vampire: Don't be Afraid, Just Start the Tape. We discuss the relationships between the triangle of Armand, Louis and Daniel in 1973 San Francisco and how the things uncovered about the first interview inform the way the three will interact in Dubai going forward. Our structure remains the same as last season but we've enhanced the “standout” segment and have added a new segment that tracks the progress of “Dreamstat” the Lestat projection who Louis carries with him, to Claudia's consternation.  Below are some links to follow on Twitter (you may call it X).  Thanks for coming to listen to us each week and welcome to those of you who are new to the series and new to the podcast.  About Black Girl Talk Fangs: BGTF became an IWTV Superfan after watching the pilot episode in October 2022! She fell completely in love with Jacob and Sam's performances as Louis and Sam, New Orleans production, 1910s/1920s costumes shout out Carol Cutshall, and of course Daniel Hart's beautifully orchestrated musical scores. She was not an Anne Rice fan, and did not discover the show through reading The Vampire Chronicles growing up, but was familiar with the 1994 film with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Kirsten Dunst. She has always loved shows about vampires since age 11 watching "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and later "True Blood". Since finding the show, she has read IWTV book, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, Tale of the Body Thief, and The Vampire Armand, she made a decision to get involved with AMC IWTV fandom after noticing that the show had little to no marketing behind it in 2022. So in November 2022, she created Black Girl Talk Fangs or BGTF on Instagram and other platforms to connect with fellow fans, and have been doing that ever since. IWTV fans sometimes ask how she came up with the BGTF name and her answer is: "I am a black girl who talks about vampires". BGTF, is a space for her to fangirl over the creative talents in front of the screen and behind it without spamming friends and family in private accounts. Follow BGTF on Instagram (@blackgirltalkfangs) and Discord where she takes deep dives into IWTV Season Two episodes and occasionally host rewatch parties. "When I did Christi's Couch, the most popular stories were always when I covered dark stuff," says Christi Lukasiak, though as a listener of Christi's Couch that may not come as too much of a surprise. You may know Christi as a Dance Moms OG, but she's also VERY into the dark and creepy side of things. What better way to explore those topics than with a podcast dedicated to them! Welcome to Beyond the Norm, a podcast dedicated to all those urban legends and things that go bump in the night. Joining Christi is her gay soulmate, Stephen Maynard, who has had quite a dark past himself with gigs at haunted theme parks and running a haunted tour company! Together they'll brave the depths of every macabre story out there. To kick things off we turn our attention to the place Christi and Stephen call home, New Orleans, to uncover it's vibrant and violent history with vampires. If you associate New Orleans with vampires, it's most likely because of Anne Rice and her 13 book opus "The Vampire Chronicles", which began with the New Orleans set "Interview with the Vampire". The book made the city synonymous with vampire culture and is host to many vampire themed events including The Endless Nights Vampire Ball, of which Christi and Stephen eagerly anticipate every year now.But there is a plethora of real historical tales of vampires in the city itself. As a city largely founded by criminals, New Orleans was a lawless town that would make it quite easy for a vampire to prey upon those who wouldn't be missed. There are even signs visible to this day that indicate there may be some truth to these tales. Join Christi and Stephen as they cover three of the French Quarter's most infamous vamps including The Carter Brothers, The Casket Girls and The Count of Saint Germain.Quotes“Don't ever walk around Bourbon Street in sandals. EW! I see people all the time... just don't do it. Or heels! I love the girls who try and rock the heels. Girls. There is not one flat suface in New Orleans. You are undoubtedly going to fall into a hole at some point, stone cold sober or not.” (8:02-8:21 | Christi & Stephen)“Well she was an energy vampire and it was funny because I was talking to her and then she goes, 'Hold on,' and then she goes [Make sucking noise] and I was like, 'What the fuck is happening,' and she says, 'I just fed on their energy!' Ok but here's the thing for being an energy vampire her energy was shit because she was an asshole.'" l(40:13-40:29 | Christi & Stephen)“I was like, 'maybe I'm a vampire,' and he literally looked at me and was like, 'No, you are a Were-Kitten,' and I just ran with it. I will forever be a Were-Kitten. But then I got low-key pissed because I was like, 'Well I couldn't be a werewolf?'” (41:33-41:46 | Stephen)“What doesn't track about that though is why would he bite her if he had bottles of blood already? Maybe he wanted warm fresh blood, Stephen. I'm just saying I don't trust that woman. She lied. Oh my god your victim blaming!” (49:21-49:34 | Christi & Stephen)  LinksSubscribe to our Patreon: www.patreon.com/BeyondtheNormPodcastFollow Christi on IG: www.instagram.com/christilukasiakFollow Stephen on IG: www.instagram.com/s_c_mayo Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Happy Pride Month, Spookies!!!! It's officially time for us to be our best, most canonically queer selves, and we're kicking off this year's line-up with a supernatural classic: Interview with the Vampire (1994). If you're not watching the TV show, you totally should be, but first we have to pay our dues to the OG Lestat de Lioncourt. Tom Cruise is absolutely That Bitch in this role, and he and Brad Pitt and Christian Slater competed in a literal handsome-off for their parts in this movie (a competition that should've also included Antonio Banderas, BTW). While this flick explicitly features two gay dads raising their iconic vampire daughter, it still very much could be gayer — but don't worry, baby, because we're just getting started. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   Bookwaves Anne Rice died of a stroke on December 11, 2021. This career-ranging interview was recorded on December 2, 2016 at Books Inc. in Opera Plaza in San Francisco, while she was on tour for her latest novel, “Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis.” Anne Rice achieved success in 1976 with her novel “Interview with the Vampire,” which spawned a series of novels titled “The Vampire Chronicles” and became a world-wide phenomenon. Along the way, she also wrote several other novels including the Mayfair Witches trilogy, Cry to Heaven, a series of books under pseudonyms, and the screenplay for “Interview with the Vampire” was turned into a successful film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. By 2003, she'd written ten novels in the Vampire Chronicles and took a break, writing novels on the life of Jesus, on angels, and on werewolves. In 2014, she returned to her vampire hero, Lestat, with Prince Lestat. Prince Lestat and the Realm of Atlantis was the second in this latest series. Since the interview was recorded, Anne Rice published one more Lestat novel, Blood Communion: A Tale of Prince Lestat in 2018, which is her last solo novel to date, though it's possible there are more to come. There are two novels written in collaboration with her son, novelist Christopher Rice, sequels to her 1989 novel Ramses the Damned. The Passion of Cleopatra was released in 2017 and The Reign of Osiris in 2022. Two seasons of a television adaptation of Interview with the Vampire and one season of The Mayfair Witches can be found on the AMC+ app. Complete Interview     Book Interview/Events and Theatre Links Note: Shows may unexpectedly close early or be postponed due to actors' positive COVID tests. Federico, enters the ITBR to discuss queer elements in the third season of the American horror anthology television series “American Horror Story: Coven," and the drama series “Interview with the Vampire” based on the novel series “The Vampire Chronicles” by Anne Rice. Joseph and Andrew discuss the significance of the Coven House located in the Garden District of New Orleans, Louisiana which attracts many horror fans who dress up like witches to re-enact scenes from the show.    Andrew asks, “why do you think it is so important that women are the center of the witch narrative rather than bring in men as witches”? Joseph argues that “Coven” does call on men to “come out” of the “shadows," specifically queer men. Finally, Joseph and Andrew discuss that Lestat and Louis are not only seen as controversial for their erotic desire but also for being same-sex parents to Claudia. Joseph explains that what makes "Interview with the Vampire" so intriguing is how it's not only a horror novel but one that comments on society's homophobic attitude by centering on queer male vampires. One of the expressions my father is very fond of saying is, “Everything happens for a reason.” He's also fond of saying, “If a problem can be solved with money, it's not really a problem,” which is easy to say when one has money, but I digress. Over time, I have come to realize that yes, everything does happen for a reason, and today's guest, the prolific Christopher Rice, agrees with me (and dad). While he had dreams of becoming an actor, those plans changed when he went from being the star of his high school drama club to finding that Brown University's drama department weren't salivating at his acting talents. So, he turned to writing and the rest is history. Meet Christopher Rice Christopher is the recipient of the Lambda Literary Award and is the Amazon Charts and New York Times bestselling author of A Density of Souls; Bone Music, Blood Echo, and Blood Victory and Bram Stoker Award finalists The Heavens Rise and The Vines. He is an executive producer of The Vampire Chronicles and The Lives of the Mayfair Witches, the AMC television adaptations of the bestselling novels by his mother, Anne Rice. He joined me on Uncorking a Story to talk about his career and latest novel Sapphire Storm, the third book in the Sapphire Cove series. Key Topics: How “failing” as an actor fueled his desire to become a writer. How he found that his desire to write about gay characters was both after and before his time. Writing his first published novel while at his mother's bedside after she slipped into a diabetic coma. How Christopher tackled switching genres from fiction to romance. The importance of having a supportive network and a “go-to” person to help stay motivated as a writer. In this episode, the Vampire Insider team got a bit silly discussing the wildly popular second book in the Vampire Chronicles series -- The Vampire Lestat. They chat a bit about the background of the book, an overview of the plot and then they dive in to some specific themes including how the vampires confront religion, what role does Lestat's loneliness play in his decision making, and Incest as a device (or just a bit of a kink) in gothic literature. The team also interrogates how the showrunners have already integrated this version of Lestat (a far more charming creature than the guy skulking around in the first book) into the series and how Sam Reid has tackled one of the most extra characters in literature with "excess within control". This episode is heavy on the laughs so be prepared for an onslaught of strange accents and Marc bursting into song; after all, there is no better episode to allow him to be all he can possibly be. Welcome to our All Souls Day Spoooooooktacular Tradition!  In accordance with the ancient scrolls, every Halloween we read another Anne Rice book and invite Dr. Claire Michker to drink too much and talk about it!  This year, we read The Tale of the Body Thief, and we have nobody to blame for it but ourselves. If you're watching the show but haven't read the books, or if you've read the books and haven't watched the show, or whatever your situation is, know that this episodes has book spoilers up through, obviously, this one, and that Claire and Sara had watched the show up through episode 5 and may have dropped a spoiler or two.  If you have no idea how it works out with Claudia and do not want to know, you might want to hold off on this episode. This book is a smorgasbord of trigger warnings including sexual assault, colonialist racism, attempted suicide, sort of a sideways kind of body horror? and a little light nun bangin'.  If that sounds titillating, don't worry, it is also the most boring thing.  It's just Lestat talking about God to people, forever.  That's the curse of eternal life; you get to keep living but Lestat comes in your window and drones at you about religion at night.   This could have been a really fun, tight novella - Lestat is bored and godlike, and this guy Raglan James comes by and makes him an offer - James can body-swap, and he'd like Lestat to pay him 10 million bucks to be mortal again for the weekend.  Everybody is like "don't do it, Lestat!" so of course Lestat is all "I'mma do it, y'all!" and then of course it does not go according to plan and then Lestat goes and begs for help and everybody says "We told you that was going to happen, Lestat!" and Lestat is all "Poor Lestat!"  Anne Rice then gets to expense a cruise. This should not take 500 pages, but don't worry - Lestat fills all 500 with words. If you want to see some fun international covers for this book, check out the show notes at our website! If you'd like to check out our previous Vampire Chronicles episodes you can listen to them wherever you get your podcasts, obvs, or here: The Bodice Tipplers Meet the Vampire Lestat The Bodice Tipplers Bow Before the Queen of the Damned
