In 1911 Vienna, a man on his way home spots the figure of a woman at the edge of the river. She is still, beautiful and nude, framed by tendrils of yellow hair. The man is Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. So instead of calling for help, the artist takes out his sketchbook. In his new historical novel Anima Rising, Christopher Moore uses this strange encounter as the jumping off point for his story, which goes on to involve characters like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. In today's episode, Moore joins NPR's Scott Simon for a conversation about the mystery at the center of the story and the real-life Klimt's relationship to women. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Christopher Moore's new novel Anima Rising combines his signature elements – complicated artists, suspicious detectives, a bawdy sisterhood, and supernatural bonking – into a strangely moving tale of friendship and survival. Set in 1911 Vienna, Chris's new novel is a spiritual sequel to his 2012 art world masterpiece Sacré Bleu: A Comedy d'Art and, in anticipation of his upcoming book tour, Chris reveals how his fondness for Gustav Klimt and Mary Shelley drives this unlikely comic adventure; how both Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung had to figure into the story (because: 1911 Vienna); and how his novels are becoming increasingly touching...or at least that's how they're being read. We began this literary podcast episode by welcoming listeners into April with a playful nod to April Fool's Day. This theme paved the way for our new monthly focus: tricksters and fools in literature. Meaghan and Arthur introduced this concept by discussing how these characters appear in stories across the globe and throughout history. We explored how tricksters often challenge societal norms through cleverness, mischief, and rule-bending behavior. From mythical gods to fairytale creatures, these figures have captivated readers and listeners for centuries. The hosts announced that April's episodes would focus on examining tricksters through various cultural lenses, exploring their evolution from oral storytelling traditions to their presence in modern literature. We emphasized that tricksters are not a recent invention but rather a long-standing narrative archetype found in myths, legends, and folk tales around the world. These characters use their intelligence and cunning to manipulate situations, often with humorous or chaotic outcomes. We framed this theme as both fascinating and fun, promising a deeper dive into specific examples as the month progresses.Origins of the Trickster ArchetypeOnce we launched into the heart of the discussion, we clarified what defines a trickster. Tricksters are beings - sometimes gods, spirits, or animals - that defy expectations and operate outside the usual rules. They often disrupt the established order, using their intellect and creativity to challenge norms. These characters aren't always malicious; sometimes, they are simply playful or seek to illuminate hidden truths. We explored how tricksters are morally ambiguous and boundary-pushing, which can make them simultaneously entertaining and unsettling. We then turned to cultural interpretations of tricksters, beginning with First Nations folklore. Figures like Coyote and Raven are often humorous pranksters, but their stories also carry deeper spiritual or philosophical lessons. We discussed how laughter and humor are considered important in many Indigenous cultures, as they can cleanse the soul and precede prayer. The tales passed down orally were sometimes used to explain natural phenomena or convey moral teachings. From there, we moved into how these oral traditions transitioned into written stories. We noted that many of the myths and folktales that feature tricksters were eventually documented, preserving them for future generations. This shift allowed trickster characters to become part of broader literary traditions. Meaghan and Arthur reflected on how grateful we are that so many cultures made the effort to record these tales, preventing them from fading into obscurity.Tricksters Across Cultures and BooksThe next section of the conversation focused on specific trickster figures across various mythologies and how they've persisted or evolved.Loki from Norse mythology was our launching point. We highlighted his popularity - particularly due to Marvel's portrayal - and his complicated personality. Sometimes, Loki is a playful trickster; other times, he's more malicious. His ability to shapeshift and deceive is core to his character, and Arthur brought up The Gospel of Loki by Joanne Harris as a unique retelling from Loki's sarcastic perspective.Next, we examined Anansi, the spider trickster from African folklore. Anansi's confidence in his wit often becomes his downfall, demonstrating the moral lessons embedded in many of his tales. On the European front, we touched on the fair folk from Celtic mythology - small, mischievous beings who have evolved in modern media into something quite different, like the fae in fantasy novels. In Japanese mythology, we discussed the kitsune, fox spirits known for shapeshifting and disregarding societal rules. We also talked about trickster characters in North American folklore, including Brer Rabbit - a clever figure from African American traditions used to critique power structures through wit. Dionysus from Greek mythology and Hermes (or Mercury in Roman tales) were also identified as possessing trickster qualities through shapeshifting and manipulation. One particularly fun character mentioned was Stingy Jack from old All Hallows' Eve stories, said to have inspired the modern jack-o'-lantern. We highlighted how many of these characters, even those with niche or local origins, have had a lasting impact due to the universality of their themes and appeal. Why Tricksters Still Resonate In LiteratureIn the final section of our conversation, we considered why tricksters continue to appear in contemporary literature and media. Meaghan and Arthur pointed out that these characters allow writers to critique institutions, traditions, and authority figures without being overly direct. Historically, jesters were the only ones allowed to mock kings without consequence, and tricksters have inherited that role in fiction. We explored how trickster characters often serve as unreliable narrators, adding complexity and unpredictability to narratives. This perspective allows authors to disrupt traditional storytelling, injecting surprise and challenging the reader's assumptions. Characters like Loki, the Joker, and the Cheshire Cat exemplify this method, each adding an element of chaos or philosophical questioning to their stories. We agreed that people enjoy reading about characters who operate outside the norm - especially those who use cunning to succeed rather than brute strength. The enduring popularity of myths and fairy tales demonstrates our ongoing fascination with the fantastical and the morally gray.Meaghan made a point about how supernatural elements like magic provide narrative freedom, allowing authors to use tricksters in unexpected ways. Arthur added that even when tricksters aren't explicitly supernatural, their rebellious nature makes them compelling. In some cases, these characters start as tricksters and evolve into villains, depending on their motivations and how far they take their rule-breaking.Book Recommendations and Closing ThoughtsTo wrap up, we offered several book recommendations that feature trickster figures. These included:Rumpelstiltskin, the classic Grimm fairy tale with a dark deal and clever escape.Puck from A Midsummer Night's Dream, who mischievously meddles with human affairs to comedic effect.Greengrass Running Water by Thomas King, which features the coyote trickster in a narrative that breaks the fourth wall.Trickster: Native American Tales, a graphic anthology that includes various trickster figures from multiple tribes. The Joker as a modern trickster-turned-villain archetype in comic books.Fool by Christopher Moore, a humorous retelling of King Lear from the fool's perspective. We wrapped up the episode by emphasizing that tricksters are present in stories from every culture. They challenge conventions, blur the line between right and wrong, and often act as mirrors to societal values. While we only scratched the surface in this introductory episode, we plan to dive deeper into unreliable narrators and modern-day tricksters in upcoming installments.
7 Ages Theatricals is producing the world premiere of Fool, Austin Tichenor's adaptation of Christopher Moore's New York Times bestselling comic novel. Tom Berger, 7AT's executive artistic director, talks about how this theatrical collaboration came to be, and reveals how the combination of Tichenor and Moore creates "a match made in Shakespeare comedy heaven" (Broadway World). Berger discusses the pleasure of being a theatre slut; the importance of staying in one's artistic lane; the stress of not wanting to disappoint each other (or Fool's creator); the paradox of having written "Schrödinger's Play;" the trick of making sure the audience catches what we're throwing; and the fateful coincidence of being a Christopher Moore superfan and a Reduced – as well as a real – Shakespeare guy. ALISTAIR CROSS Alistair Cross' debut novel, The Crimson Corset, a vampiric tale of terror and seduction, was an immediate bestseller earning praise from veteran vampire-lit author, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, and New York Times bestseller, Jay Bonansinga, author of The Walking Dead series. In 2012, Alistair joined forces with international bestseller, Tamara Thorne, and as Thorne & Cross, they write – among other things – the successful Gothic series, The Ravencrest Saga. Their debut collaboration, The Cliffhouse Haunting, was a bestseller. They are currently at work on their next solo novels and a new collaborative project. In 2014, Alistair and Tamara began the radio show, Thorne & Cross: Haunted Nights LIVE!, which has featured such guests as Anne Rice of The Vampire Chronicles, Charlaine Harris of the Southern Vampire Mysteries and basis of the HBO series True Blood, Jeff Lindsay, author of the Dexter novels, Jay Bonansinga of The Walking Dead series, Laurell K. Hamilton of the Anita Blake novels, Peter Atkins, screenwriter of HELLRAISER 2, 3, and 4, worldwide bestseller V.C. Since then she has written many more, including international bestsellers Haunted, Bad Things, Moonfall, and The Sorority. Tamara's interest in writing is lifelong, as is her fascination with the paranormal, occult, mythology and folklore. She's been an avid ghost story collector and writer all her life. Tamara's novels range from straight-out ghost stories to tales of witchcraft, conspiracies, UFOs, elemental forces, and vampires. No matter what topic she chooses, chances are you'll find a ghost or two lurking in the background. Today, she and her frequent collaborator, Alistair Cross, share their worlds and continue to write about ghosts and other mysterious forces. Whether collaborating or writing solo, there is no shortage of humor, sex, blood, and spookiness. Tamara also conducts real-life investigations of anomalous phenomena and has seen a number of odd things over the last twenty years. As an open-minded skeptic, she's spoken to many paranormal groups and has appeared on the television show, Ghost Adventures. Most recently, she and Alistair Cross went on a five-day investigation to an allegedly haunted cabin in California's Gold Country - an adventure that inspired The Cliffhouse Haunting. She has also been featured on many radio programs and in various newspapers on the topics of haunted places and local lore. A journalist by training, she occasionally writes about ghosts and hauntings for a syndicate of southern California newspapers, but her first love is, and has always been, telling ghost stories to make people scream. . . and laugh. Content Warning: Sexual ThemesChristopher Moore is back with another book. It's fine. A mediocre man cracks wise while getting increasingly over his head in trouble. He'll probably be bailed out at the end by supernatural forces of which he is barely aware. Simultaneously he is romancing a much more attractive woman who inexplicably finds him charming. In other words, it's the same as all his other books except this time everyone talks like they're in an old movie. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
Talking about show vs tell at the scene level is a little bit harder than talking about it at the paragraph and scene levels. But it's also a tiny bit easier. When you're looking for telling at this level of the story, what you're looking for is a couple of things: A butt ton of backstory. A butt ton of info dumps A lot of flashback. You can have bits of these things in your stories. Where us authors get into trouble is when we have a lot of it and we have a lot of it in telling language. So, that really happens when we do this: Bud Godzilla looked down on his sweet friend turned zombie. They'd been friends forever, so this hurt. Three page description of how they met – info dump or backstory Or: Bud Godzilla looked down on his sweet friend turned zombie. They'd been friends forever, so this hurt. Three page scene of how they met – flashback. You usually want to limit these places and instead sprinkle in action/dialogue/details throughout to help the readers understand that the characters have history or the world exists before the book begins. There's a balance between telling too much and too little. You want the reader to anticipate that something cool is going to happen or has happened, but you don't want to leave them confused or knowing way too much. You know how sometimes you'll be on the plane and the person will not stop talking for six hours about their boil, their aunts' piano obsessions, their dinner plans while you just want to finish watching the inflight movie? That's what happens with those paragraphs of backstory, flashbacks and info dumping. Everything is paused. The stakes are gone. And when that happens? You risk losing your reader completely. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Pogie says keep your eyes on the prize, my friend, and laugh. COOL WRITING EXERCISE TO MAX OUT YOUR SKILLS This comes from the Writing Cooperative and it's really about how to spot your info dump, which is an exercise. "Once you spot an info-dump, ask yourself the following questions: "How much of this information is it essential for the reader to know right now? Most of the information will not be essential. Be ruthless. Cut it out. "Of the information left — if any — how can I get the protagonist to do something which shows or implies the information? This may involve minor or major rewriting, but you do no-one any good by avoiding it. Rework or add scenes which convey the information through present situations and your protagonist's actions. "If the information is necessary, how can I use it to enhance the emotional effect of the scene? Key in on the emotional impact of the scene and if you must retain information that can't be shown or implied, look for ways to add it in a way that will have an emotional impact. ;But the woman you saw can't have been my mom, Angie. Mom died when I was a kid.'" Transcript On the season 3 premiere, I'm joined by John Harper, designer of many games featured on past episodes of Dice Exploder including Blades in the Dark, Lasers & Feelings, and Agon 2e. John brought in the Psi*Run risk sheet, a fairly complex dice resolution mechanic, known generically as Otherkind Dice. The risk sheet is such an elegant piece of design, packing essentially a whole game onto a single sheet of paper, and being so clear in both how it works and how you might tear it apart for your own ends. If you're a new designer, or even just looking to get back in touch with the basics, John and I agree that hacking this thing is a great place to look. It's good to be back. Razzmatazz, his latest novel, is a follow-up to Noir, and takes us back to the City by the Bay in 1946, and the world of Chinatown and North Beach, and lesbian and cross-dressing bars, gangsters both foreign and domestic, the African American community at the time, aliens, and magical dragons, with a side-trip to 1906. Lillian Ross, who died on September 20, 2017 at the age of 99, spent seven decades as a staff writer for the New Yorker Magazine, beginning in 1945. Writing for the Talk of the Town section of the magazine, her credo was “Your attention at all times should be on your subject, not on you. Do not call attention to yourself.” In 1950, her profile of Ernest Hemingway, according to the New York Times, elevated her into the top ranks of New Yorker stylists. Using novelistic techniques for writing non-fiction, she is often credited as the primary influence of what came to be called “new journalism” as exemplified in her series of articles about the making of the John Huston film, The Red Badge of Courage, which were collected in the book, Picture, often called the best book ever written about Hollywood. She spent several years as the mistress of long-time New Yorker editor Willliam Shawn, as chronicled in her book Here But Not Here, from 1998. This interview with Lillian Ross took place on June 4, 2002 on the publication of her book, “Reporting Back: Notes on Journalism.” Of this particular discussion she later wrote, “ It's the first time I ever listened to any kind of broadcast on my power book, and I was amazed. It's the first interview I've ever experienced that sounded interesting to me and sounded true to me. That of course is because of you, your questions, your general interest, your understanding, and your response, and then, your editing. I do thank you. I'm very grateful. With great admiration, Lillian Ross.” Lillian Ross's final piece, a profile of J.D. Salinger after his death, was published in 2012. PopaHALLics #94 "Pop Across the Pond"How did those folks on the other side of the Atlantic get to be such great storytellers? Dad and daughter discuss the silly BBC-style mockumentary "Cunk on Earth," the Irish drama/black comedy "Bad Sisters," and a sprawling novel about a dysfunctional family that begins on the English Coast, "The Whalebone Theatre." 'Course, we talk about some stuff made in 'merica too.Streaming:"Cunk on Earth," Netflix. The ill-informed, irreverent Philomena Cunk (Diane Morgan) sets out to document the highlights of human history by visiting exotic locales and asking silly questions of experts. Pretty funny."Bad Sisters," Apple +. Scheming, manipulative John Paul (Danish actor Claes Bang) is a piece of work. But when he dies unexpectedly, which one of the Garvey sisters killed him? And can the quarreling sisters stay one step ahead of the dogged, if hapless, insurance investigator trying to avoid a big payout to the widow? This smart drama with plenty of black comedy features a terrific Irish cast headlined by Sharon Horgan ("Catastrophe")."Poker Face," Peacock. In this limited character-based mystery series from "Knives Out" creator Rian Johnson, Natasha Lyonne ("Russian Doll") plays down-on-her-luck, foulmouthed Charlie, who can immediately tell if someone's lying. This peculiar gift soon has her fleeing across America, trying to outrun the mob while solving mysteries along the way. Books:"The Cloisters," by Katy Hays. In this bestselling novel, a circle of researchers uncover a mysterious deck of tarot cards and shocking secrets in New York's famed Met Cloisters. This time he's a nerdy junior high science teacher (!), the sole survivor of a mission to save Earth from another ice age."Razzamatazz," by Christopher Moore. Lily Collins '07 is an actor, producer, and centerpiece of the global Netflix phenomenon, Emily in Paris. In this episode, Lily joins The Supporting Cast from New York amid a massive press tour, wedged between late night talk show appearances, to speak about the responsibility she carries as both the series lead, and more broadly, as a public figure. To the latter, Lily describes her choice in the 2017 memoir “Unfiltered” to speak about personal challenges in her teenage years—including battling an eating disorder. Lily insists that a principal reason she felt so prepared to share her truth was the confidence, trust, and sense of community she gained from Harvard-Westlake Peer Support. Lily remains close to this day with her HW Peer Support friends, and credits the group's embrace with her finding such a strong personal and professional community as an adult. Lily references educators Christopher Moore and Jocelyn Medawar of Harvard-Westlake, as well as actors/filmmakers Sandra Bullock, Julia Roberts, and David Fincher, as profound life mentors.

Hello and welcome to this bonus episode of Ken Reads The Classics. As I mentioned, I will, from time to time, review a modern book and this is one of those times. I just finished reading Razzmatazz by Christopher Moore. Razzmatazz is the sequel to his novel Noir but rest assured it stands on it's own. I know this because I haven't read Noir before but after reading Razzmatazz, I plan on picking a copy of Noir up and enjoying that. Razzmatazz takes place in post-World War II San Francisco. Moore created a host of engaging characters like Sammy, Moo Shus, The Cheese, and Uncle Ho among the human ones and the Rain Dragon and Scooter among the non-human ones. This book grabbed my attention from the beginning, and I mean beginning with the trigger warning. Moore uses colorful language throughout the book, including some racial slurs, but he uses them to show the ignorance of people vice engaging in racial supremacist apology or justification. Sammy is the lead character who couldn't serve in the war due to physical defects and now that the war is over, earns his living as a bartender. He dates a energetic, former welder now turned waitress that he calls The Cheese but doesn't want her to know that. Moore surrounds this duo with a multi-racial, multi-cultural team of people with Asian and African ethnicity to solve a mystery, well several mysteries actually, like the figurative onion with Moore peeling away layer after layer until you reach the center - of the earth - well, almost. His energetic writing style kept my mind engaged as the story raced along; I admit to re-reading several sections, sometimes because I wanted to laugh again - this book is very funny, and other times because my brain couldn't keep up with Moore. I appreciated the challenge though and I think you will too. If you can handle the many off-color jokes and a great deal of immature yet somehow just for adults language, then Razzmatazz is for you. Thank you for listening and please joining me next time on Ken Reads The Classics. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ken-davis7/support

Christopher Moore is an American writer of comic fantasy. An only child, Moore learned to amuse himself with his imagination. He loved reading and his father brought him plenty of books from the library every week. He started writing around the age of twelve and realized that this was his talent by the time he was 16, and he began to consider making it his career. Moore's novels typically involve conflicted everyman characters struggling through supernatural or extraordinary circumstances. With the possible exceptions of Fool, The Serpent of Venice, Sacré Bleu, and Shakespeare for Squirrels: A Novel, all his books take place in the same universe and some characters recur from novel to novel. According to his interview in the June 2007 issue of Writer's Digest, the film rights to Moore's first novel, Practical Demonkeeping (1992), were purchased by Disney even before the book had a publisher. In answer to repeated questions from fans over the years, Moore stated that all of his books have been optioned or sold for films, but that as yet "none of them are in any danger of being made into a movie." Moore has named Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, John Steinbeck, Tom Robbins, Richard Brautigan, Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson, Jules Verne, Ray Bradbury, H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe and Ian Fleming as key influences on his writing. Moore lives in San Francisco, after a few years on the island of Kauai, Hawaii.
Christopher Moore's latest comic novel Razzmatazz is a sequel to his 2018 novel Noir, a wonderfully funny and satisfying novel of reinvention that depicts San Francisco's seedy but fabulous underbelly in post-war 1940s San Francisco. Chris discusses how Razzmatazz came out of the research he did into the history of San Francisco for Noir; how he manages to find the funny in serious subjects; the fun of jumping around in time; the importance of following Shakespeare's example by adding comic relief to serious subjects; giving readers a win; the ah-ha! moment of realizing a secondary character in Noir can become a protagonist in Razzmatazz; how not to get bogged down in a consistent point of view; which characters got moxie and which characters don't; the surprisingly long wait for the perfect synopsis; and the origin (and surprising new definition) of the title. Kids have so much to teach us! Their perspective is so pure and innocent, and in observing them we can learn how to be better humans. Join me as I share some of the lessons I have learned from children in my life. And here are the quotes I shared at the beginning of class :) “Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven.” — Henry Ward Beecher, reverend and social activist “The soul is healed by being with children.” — Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Russian novelist and philosopher “Every child you encounter is a divine appointment.” — Wess Stafford, President Emeritus of Compassion International “You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.” — Franklin P. Jones, American humorist “Children see magic because they look for it.” — Christopher Moore, writer “While we try to teach our children all about life, Our children teach us what life is all about.” — Angela Schwindt, home schooling mom “Pretty much all the honest truth telling there is in the world is done by children.” — Oliver Wendell Holmes, author and poet “Children seldom misquote. In fact, they usually repeat word for word what you shouldn't have said.” — Author unknown “Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” — Robert Fulghum, author “Children are a great comfort to us in our old age, and they help us reach it faster too.” — Author unknown “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” — Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist “A characteristic of the normal child is he doesn't act that way very often” — Author unknown “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.” — Fred Rogers, television personality “I have found the best way to give advice to your children is to find out what they want and then advise them to do it.” — Harry S. Truman, 33rd President of the United States “The best inheritance a parent can give his children is a few minutes of his time each day.” — Orlando Aloysius Battista, Canadia-American chemist and author https://www.compassion.com/poverty/famous-quotes-about-children.htm "Children are not a distraction from more important work, they are the most important work." – C.S. Lewis
Hi all!!!This week we began discussing the wonderful weather we've been blessed with, but then the conversation turned into story time with Jo that lead to a brief mention to how scientist are questioning if women have the ability impregnate themselves, so exciting!Let's start with Man and Jo's birthday celebration extravaganza!!! Which consisted of pedicures, piercings, and a mighty book haul.We both picked up Anatomy a Love Story by Dana Shwartz. Man added to her stack Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco, and a couple of Chuck Palahniuks. While Jo added a little quirk to her stack with Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job, You Suck, and Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Friend. We dip into the last episodes of Season 2 of Euphoria on HBOMax. I've never wanted to be so wrong but the unfortunate events that unravel in the last episode gripped our hearts tight and we find ourselves hoping for the best and preparing for the worst for Ashtray.Heels (2021) on STARZs stars Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig created by Michael Waldron (producer of Loki and Rick and Morty), follows the complicated life of Jack and Ace Spade in this authentic portrayal of the wrestling world and its complexities in and out of the ring. The performances, the betrayals, the accents! On March 4th the newest Batman finally hit theaters. The Batman directed by Matt Reeves starring Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Collin Farrell, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Andy Serkis and many more. We follow a very angry and determined Bruce Wayne on his second year as Batman/Vengeance in this noire version of greatness. Heavy with dialogue and fighting, the play with lighting and darkness is everything we wanted from a batman movie. The Batman gives Bruce Wayne's well known tragedy a leg to stand on, giving his perfect family a major flaw he might not be able to live with while trying to stop The Riddler (Dano), who, in my opinion, gave Heath Ledger's Joker a run for his money, with a performing just as terrifying and maybe more psychotic. We hope you've enjoyed our show so far and continue to tune in every Wednesday!
