We don’t try new things, we don’t ask for what we deserve, and we don’t give ourselves a chance to pursue our dreams because we fear potential rejection. Rejection decreases your ability to keep pushing forward. It increases anger, anxiety, depression, jealousy, and sadness. It drives imposter syndrome and lack of self-confidence. One thing I’ve learned over my 15 years in Corporate America is that feedback can be a key differentiator between those who succeed and and those who don’t. Especially for those of us who are looking to climb the ladder, take on leadership positions, and/or secure higher paying opportunities, understanding what we should stop, start, and continue doing is a critical part of our journey. All feedback is NOT created equal though and research tells us that Black women are less likely to receive the kind of meaningful feedback we need in order to improve our skills so we can get to the next level. Today I’m unmasking the second biggest culprit when it comes to career standstills - fear. In all of the conversations I have with women, there’s a lot of fears that come up when it comes to why they’re not progressing in their careers. They’re afraid to ask for a raise, afraid to apply for that job, afraid to actually move in the direction they need to go in. What I’ve noticed is that although the women I’m speaking with have different goals and are at different places in their career, there are common blockers that run through each of their stories and that these blockers are responsible for keeping each of them “stuck”. Of all the blockers I’ve uncovered, there have been 3 major ones that are not only common, but are often so ingrained, the women I speak with don’t even realize how these things are negatively impacting their career success. I’m tackling the biggest and most crucial blocker I’ve come across - lack of confidence - and breaking down how to immediately increase your self-confidence so you can level up in your career. I wrote a post on the Your Career Girl Facebook page last year that started off with the words: I don’t believe in Impostor Syndrome. And as you can imagine, it was quite controversial. Impostor Syndrome is defined as the persistent inability to believe that one’s success is deserved or was legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills. And while I believe that there are very real emotional and professional implications of being affected by Impostor Syndrome, I don’t believe the premise of the argument. Impostor Syndrome isn’t some thing that women of color have created on their own - its origins stem from some very real implications of racism. Also, Impostor Syndrome isn’t something that women of color are destined to deal with for the rest of our lives - it is very possible to push through. Listen in as I break down my definition of Impostor Syndrome, explain the different types and share my 4 step process on eliminating it once and for all. While each woman’s experience is unique, I’ve been able to categorize the challenges women face in their professional journeys into a few main themes. One theme that comes up a lot in my work is overcoming the challenge of leaving a job/career/company that no longer serves you. In fact, of the 100 women who’ve applied to have a free career exploration call with me since February of this year, an overwhelming majority of applicants list some variation of this as a main career challenge they’re facing: “Exiting a work space I’ve outgrown”. With all the challenges women - especially Black women - face in their careers, it’s no surprise they’re having trouble making the leap to bigger and better opportunities at work. In this episode, I’m discussing 1) how to know you’ve outgrown your current work space, 2) why it’s hard for you to walk away from that space even when you know you should and 3) what steps you can take once you’re finally ready to move on to the next phase in your career. In this interview, she talked about networking with people on the same level as her. People who were ‘in the trenches’ at the same time, and how that helped elevate her career. This is networking across! In today’s episode, I’m talking about how you can strategically place yourself around people who are on the same level as you, and how to make this an important part of your networking plan. If you’re ready to get serious about networking, then you don’t want to miss episode 33!

One thing I'm very passionate about is helping women make more money. I'm all about breaking that glass ceiling, and earning the salary you' re worth. I see a lot of people struggling when it comes to asking for a raise. People don't seem to know the right steps to take, and aren't getting the outcomes they hope for. The biggest mistake I see people make is not being prepared for the big conversation. You can't just schedule a meeting with HR and tell them you want a raise--there is so much you should do before you even think about requesting that meeting! In today's episode, I'm sharing the five things you need to do so that when you go into that meeting with your manager, you're fully prepared. If you are trying to get a salary increase this year, then episode 31 is a must-listen for you! Check out the show notes at: yourcareergirl.com/blog/episode31

One of the differentiating characteristics of top performers and everyone else is the incessant drive to make an impact. Top performers need to make professional contributions that matter and are valued. For this reason, it's no surprise that they're almost always in some stage of career transition. Whether they're moving to a new role, taking on a new project, or implementing a new idea, top performers are either preparing for, in the process of, or just finishing up making some kind of move. The thing is, even though it's not uncommon for these types of opportunities to present themselves to top performers, there are times when no matter how hard you work or how well you do your job, you're not being tapped for the actual opportunities you want. In episode 30, I'm talking about the importance of building a brand that supports the kinds of moves you want to make in your career. If you're ready to be more strategic and intentional about choosing your next career opportunity, then this episode is a must listen! Check out the show notes at: yourcareergirl.com/blog/episode30

This episode is a little different from other episodes, but I just had to dive into the controversy surrounding the new movie, All the Money in the World as it relates to the gender wage gap. If you're unaware, right on the heels of the controversy with actor Kevin Spacey being accused of sexual misconduct against several men, the producers decided to re-shoot the movie so they could essentially remove Kevin from all scenes. When asked to re-shoot the movie, Mark Wahlberg (man) said yes, as long as he was paid $1,500,000 to do so and Michelle Williams (woman) said yes, and that she'd even be willing to donate her salary to make it happen! As you might expect, once news of the pay discrepancy went public, some people were calling for Marky Mark's head on a platter and demanding he do something to right this wrong (he's since donated all the money he made from the re-shoot to the Time's Up Legal Defense Fund in Michelle Williams' name). Listen in to episode 29 as I break down my thoughts on what happened and the three mindset shifts you need to make in order to make sure something like this don't happen to you. This week's podcast episode was inspired by a question I received from one of the Career Success Circle members, April. She asked: "How can I focus on improving my skills in my career, without going into debt?" I thought this was an amazing question. As a high achieving and ambitious woman, you may be at a point in your career where you're looking to pivot. Maybe you're feeling stuck and like you want to make a switch, or you want to expand on your skill set, but 1) you're not sure where to start and/or 2) you're not sure where the coins are going to come from to make it happen. I've spoken to many women over the years who share these sentiments and I'm a firm believer in the fact that money should never hinder you from going after personal and professional development opportunities. Sexual harassment in the U.S. has ALWAYS been a problem. And with the recent rise of the #metoo movement, led by Tarana Burke, our problem is now all over these internet streets for the world to see. Yup, that's right. We've been hearing pretty much on a daily basis just how icky men have been to the women they work with. Whether it's by forceably groping or kissing them, making inappropriate comments, or flat out rape. Did you know that over 17 million women have reported sexual assault since 1998? It's crazy, y'all. And of those 17 million that have reported their assault, there are millions more who've yet to speak up. These stats are just not OK by me and is the reason I've dedicated this episode to equipping you with the proper information, tools and resources you need to do your part to end this systemic problem. In this episode, I'm diving DEEP into sexual harassment in the workplace. I break down: What sexual harassment is and isn't Why we (yes, you and me included) keep doing that allows it to happen What we (again, you and me) can do to stop it going forward!
