In this heartfelt and honest episode, Giana opens up about her long-time relationship with perfectionism—how it quietly shaped her path, fueled impostor syndrome, and kept her playing small. We explore the sneaky ways perfectionism shows up in teaching yoga, and especially on social media, where carefully curated feeds can end up hiding who we really are.We talk about how striving to appear flawless can hold us back from taking risks, speaking our truth, and feeling like we truly belong in the spaces we've worked so hard to enter. That lingering sense of “never being enough”? Yep, we go there. And we talk about how embracing your full, messy, brilliant self can change everything. Authenticity creates connection. Vulnerability opens doors. This episode is your reminder that your presence doesn't have to be perfect to be powerful. Bring the mess. Bring the magic. There's space for you, just as you are. Also, there may or may not be a tangent about editing podcast episodes, faking it till you make it, and the stereotypical yogi facade. In this episode of Building Better Developers, Rob Broadhead and Michael Meloche explore impostor syndrome—a challenge many entrepreneurs and leaders silently struggle with. You're not alone if you've ever felt unworthy of success or like you don't belong. Why Impostor Syndrome Appears After Success Impostor syndrome tends to show up at the most inconvenient times, usually after a win. You've landed a big client or completed a major project, but instead of confidence, you feel doubt. Michael identifies three primary triggers: Burnout – You're stretched too thin and start to question your ability. Lack of direction – Uncertainty about what's next fuels anxiety. Criticism – Negative feedback sticks harder than positive progress.
You know that moment when it's time to act, but something holds you back? Telling you that you need to think about it more or that you ned to collect more data? But actually, it's not a lack of data or skills. It's the quiet voice of self-doubt that leads to second-guessing. In this episode of The Manager Track Podcast, Ramona breaks down how imposter syndrome can sneak into your decision-making and slow you down even when you actually already know what needs to be done. She shares practical tools and a step-by-step approach to help you move through that fog so that you can take action with more clarity and confidence (even if the nerves and doubts don't fully disappear). Here is what we'll cover: ✅ The science behind why impostor syndrome hijacks your thinking✅ How to spot the signs (like over-researching or perfectionism) before they slow you down✅ A 6-step framework to work through high-stakes calls and make decisions with logic This one's not about being fearless - it's about learning how to lead through fear, self-doubt, and all the noise in your head. In this short clip from a recent masterclass, I share the insight that flipped my whole relationship with impostor syndrome. Hey friends + welcome to what will actually be the last conversation episode for the spring of 2025 + part 1 of what will now be a 2-part season of the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast. This is a little bit of a change of plans but don't worry, more updates on a solo-episode coming your way next week! This week, we're chatting about a true underdog story with author, Mary Marantz. For those who don't know her, Mary's story is something special. She grew up in a West Virginia mountainside trailer + ended up being the first in her family to go to college — which just so happened to be Yale Law. Today we're talking all about her story + the books she's written about it — including her newest, ‘Underestimated' that comes out a WEEK FROM TODAY (pre-order details below). In our conversation Mary is very poetically painting the picture of her life, including... How the dirt floor of her upbringing + the roots she thought would keep her chained to where she was forever, became the very thing that would open the door to Yale law. Why Slow Growth = Strong Roots is her life's mantra (also the title of her second book). How her new book, Underestimated, uncoverss that fear holds a lot of names (like Perfectionism, Procrastination, People Pleasing, Impostor Syndrome, Overthinking… 14 in total) -- including a deep dive on perfectionism in this conversation! I just know this conversation is for someone out there listening and I can't wait for you to dive in. You'll have to tell me what you think! About Mary Marantz: Mary Marantz grew up in a trailer in rural West Virginia. The first of her immediate family to go to college, she went on to earn a master's degree in moral philosophy and a law degree from Yale. After ditching six-figure-salary law firm offers in London and New York and starting a business with her husband, Justin, together they have built their online education platform for creative entrepreneurs. Mary is a popular writer and speaker whose work has recently been featured by Business Insider, MSN, Bustle, and Brit+Co. And she is also the host of the iTunes Top 200 podcast, The Mary Marantz Show. She lives in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut with Justin and their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed & Atticus. Today, Bailie is the host of the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast (debuting on Apple's Top Charts) and a published author and speaker. Are you worried your teen doubts themselves no matter how hard they work? Do they brush off compliments or beat themselves up when things don't go perfectly? In this powerful episode, Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin, psychologist and author of Your Child's Greatness, joins Colleen to explore how imposter syndrome shows up in teens—and how parents can help prevent it. Lisa shares how imposter syndrome stems from not internalizing success, overvaluing others, and defaulting to perfectionism. Drawing from personal stories—including her daughter's fencing journey—Lisa highlights the importance of embracing failure, savoring small wins, and teaching your child to develop a growth mindset. You'll hear heartfelt insights about helping your child build resilience and why internalizing success matters just as much as achieving it. Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin is a licensed psychologist and executive coach. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University. Her expertise on impostor syndrome is regularly sought by the media, and she has appeared in outlets such as the Financial Times, the TODAY show, Good Morning America, Forbes, HuffPost, Refinery29, and more. Dr. Orbé-Austin has been an invited speaker at various national conferences. Her first book, Own Your Greatness: Overcome Impostor Syndrome, Beat Self-Doubt, and Succeed in Life (Ulysses Press, 2020) coauthored with her partner, Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin, was a finalist for the Foreword INDIES Book Award. Her second book, Your Unstoppable Greatness: Break Free of Impostor Syndrome, Cultivate Your Agency, and Achieve Your Ultimate Career Goals H(Ulysses Press, 2022) is focused on dealing with the systemic dynamics that keep impostor syndrome in place and how to directly combat those dynamics. Here are three inspiring takeaways from this conversation: Failure is not the enemy—it's the classroom. Helping your teen reframe failure as part of the growth process builds resilience and self-belief. Let them fail safely, and support their emotional regulation afterward. Celebrate the small wins. Whether it's improving by one point or making it through a tough day, acknowledging progress helps your teen internalize success and develop confidence in their abilities. Model and nurture self-worth. Teens learn by watching. When you savor your own wins and embrace your imperfections, you give your child permission to do the same—and combat imposter syndrome from the inside out. It's common to label someone as a narcissist, but while we often think of narcissism as excessive self-regard, the ultimate cause might be quite different. In fact, narcissism may stem from an underlying insecurity rather than an inflated sense of self-worth.In this episode, Thom explains the root causes of narcissism and shares key indicators of narcissistic behavior. Importantly, he encourages us to approach narcissists with compassion and offers a potential solution for those who recognize narcissistic tendencies in themselves.Episode Highlights[00:45] Narcissus[04:48] Somebody Has Done This to Me[06:49] The Narcissist's Caveat[08:42] One-Upmanship[11:30] An Impostor Syndrome[14:50] An Underlying Feeling of Desperation[17:40] Reconstructed Life Stories[19:48] Calming Narcissism Through Vedic Meditation[23:21] The Effects of Vedic Meditation on NarcissismUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.com https://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/
The dawning of a new year is a great time for reflection and planning. We have the chance to see what we would like to release, what we would like to change, and what we would like to add to our lives. Something that causes me the most frustration is when I have created a vision for the life I want to live and then end up not making it reality because of self-sabotage. One of the biggest causes of self-sabotage is impostor syndrome. When you feel like you do not belong, you keep our head down so you aren't noticed. That means you don't take action, which makes it impossible to create the life you desire. This week in the podcast, I share how I uncover the impostor syndrome in myself and how I use tapping to clear it. AND yes, we do lots of tapping. Support the podcast! When Halla Tómasdóttir lost her bid for the Icelandic presidency in 2016, she wasn't sure she wanted to run again. But after battles with self-doubt, encouragement from her supporters and an epiphany about leadership, she ran again this year — and this time, she won. Halla joins Adam to discuss dealing with impostor syndrome, why leadership is worth the effort and how listening and asking questions can build trust with constituents and make you a stronger leader. The two also dig into the story behind Halla's "scarf revolution," Iceland's history of solving problems with creativity and Halla's approach to leading her campaign — and presidency — with optimism. It turns out, a lot of our beliefs about how we are performing at work - and how we choose to label that performance - can negatively impact our jobs and our mental health. Basima Tewfik is an Assistant Professor of Work and Organization Studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management, who looks deeply at our social behaviors and psychology at work. And she's found that labels like anxious, neurotic, and imposter syndrome can actually be really detrimental to our success. Even impostor feelings, in her research, can lead to positive outcomes at work. Tewfik thinks of each like a double edged sword and explains how her research focuses on the positive side of phenomena like these.
