How can a small restaurant operator think about marketing? This week's episode of the Restaurant Business podcast “A Deeper Dive” features Chip Klose, the host of the Restaurant Strategy podcast and author of the book The Restaurant Marketing Mindset. We wanted to talk with Chip about marketing, and why it's so important for restaurant companies. We initially thought we'd discuss some recent industry marketing trends but we ended up talking entirely about how small brands and operators should think about it. Klose coaches operators on the topic. And he believes that marketing is vital for operators and that they should get into that mindset even before they open their doors. He discusses the best way for operators to get into that mindset. We also talk about social media and the best way to leverage that medium to keep pace with large brands. It's not as simple as just having someone “do social media.” And we talk about where the best marketing takes place. Hint: It's not far from the restaurant. It was a fascinating conversation about marketing so check it out.

Today, we're diving into the fascinating world of blue zones, sharing our recent experiences, and what we've learned along the way! Because of the differences we've noticed in food quality from the US to Europe and a recent realization about Rob's cholesterol, we've been thinking about the importance of being intentional about how we live. We tend to take inspiration from the blue zones of the world, and today we're going to share how! Both Greece and Italy boast their own blue zones with life expectancies way higher than in the United States. We'll explore what makes these regions so special and how we can apply their secrets to our own lives, wherever we are. For those looking to extend their years and improve their quality of life, we highly recommend focusing on longevity. You can even ponder what the centenarian Olympics would look like to help prepare your body for aging. We've got some insights on that too, as we discuss the perspective of these remarkable individuals and what it can teach us about our own health and wellness journey. Your fitness levels change as you age, especially after hitting that milestone of 70 years old. Hint: It's not great news, but there's hope! It's all about the care you put in now. We're sharing how to take advantage of cardiovascular training zones and the "power of nine." We'll also explore the difference between symptom control and living for longevity. It's all about finding the root cause of health issues rather than just slapping on a band-aid. If you're ready to unlock the secrets of the blue zones, extend your life expectancy, and embrace a healthier, happier you, tune in! What you'll hear in this episode: [4:00] Being intentional about "blue-zoning" yourself. [7:40] How do you measure cardiovascular fitness? [15:00] The power of nine. What processes does your nonprofit have in place to mitigate risks, ensure compliance, most importantly safeguard your precious assets? In this podcast episode, Stephanie discusses what internal controls are and why it's important to have them in place… to safeguard your precious assets. She has seen all too many times the consequences organizations face when they do not have these procedures in place. And no, it's not just because an auditor “dinged” the organization for not having these policies. Unfortunately, she's seen much worse. The good news?! You don't have to be one of those horror stories, because you're going to tune into this podcast and learn all the things about internal controls, like… …the four most important types of internal controls: financial, fraud protection, cybersecurity, and conflicts of interest. Plus, strategies to implement these policies in your nonprofit and how to communicate procedures with your board members and staff. Hint: It's not creating the policy, filing it into a drawer, and never looking at it again. (And if you've done this in the past, there is zero judgment. However, there is a better way!) Read the podcast transcript here. Episode Summary: In today's episode, you'll learn strategies for safeguarding your assets by using internal controls, including: What internal controls are (1:05) Financial management and controls (3:55) Fraud prevention and protection (6:45) Cybersecurity and data protection (10:30) Conflicts of interest (12:45) Sharing internal control policies with your team (16:00) Resources for training your board (18:50) Teasers: “We have a responsibility as nonprofit organizations to safeguard our assets and to safeguard the money that has been entrusted to us by our donors, by our funders, and we need to have the appropriate controls and rules in place to make sure that everything is safe.” “Making sure that you've got two people in every step of that process is really helpful for having a solid internal control.” “If this [cybersecurity] is not in your budget for next year, I would do some research and put it in your budget.” “It's always this continuous improvement process.” Huge thank you to our sponsor, GrantsWorks! Recently, in one of my programs, the topic came up about how our relationships start to change as we get further and further into personal development. Sometimes you come up against some opposition from a handful of peeps in your life who don't really love the “new, empowered you”… The “you” who is setting boundaries. The “you” who is standing up for themselves and knows how they deserve to be treated. But… something we haven't talked about as much on the pod is the multitude of other ways that your relationships start to change as you begin to grow and take a stand for yourself – When you start to actually believe that you're “enough”. And, often, when you're in the painful, murky waters of looking at all of your shit, you just want to know that something good is going to be on the other side. I mean… tell me that I will love my life even if I'm setting all these boundaries… it won't always be this hard, right? RIGHT!? So, this week, I thought I would dig into 6 ways that a strong sense of self-worth radically impacts your relationships For. The. Better. So, you can look at this journey through the lens of what you're gaining instead of what feels painful. Have a listen and change your perspective on this roller coaster we call Personal Growth. This pod explores: How valuing yourself changes how you address what you need in any given relationship How worthiness changes how much you blame others (like, if only my mom wasn't such a nag… ) How a strong self-worth changes the sorts of relationships you are willing to tolerate The absolute BEST side effect of cultivating your worth and self-love (Hint: It involves other badasses) WORTHY. APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN! 2 SPOTS REMAIN! IT'S TIME TO BELIEVE YOU ARE WORTHY, ONCE AND FOR ALL. It's time to stop talking constant shit to yourself. The doors are officially open for an exclusive, group-coaching immersion that will teach you the skills to access some serious “enoughness,” start believing in yourself, and speak up for yourself like a bold, boundaried badass. Hey hey! I'm back with another juicy episode! Last week, we explored what spiritual season we find ourselves in. With all the items on your daily spiritual checklist, you might be wondering, how do I know if this is really working? In fact, it's been a guiding question of mine: How do you know if all you are doing to be well is helping you be well? Hint: It's not about the green juice, or mala beads, or escaping to beautiful Bali (although, those are cool too)... YOU KNOW YOU'RE HEALING WHEN.... 1. You make space to respond, not react… Drop the tit for tat, unplug from autopilot. Ask yourself, what is the highest response, for the good of all in this situation? 2. Fixing other people's issues is not your primary concern… of course Love and service all the way. But ya know... you can't rescue anyone, and when you try to... it's kind of disrespectful to them. Your ego doesn't need to be their saviour. How about having faith in their strength? The vibe: YOU CAN DO THIS. 3. Loving on ALL parts of yourself is COMFORTING… including those fiery, forbidden parts of you – the stuff you've likely been pushing away. 4. Respecting the other person is as important as respecting yourself… you extend dignity to all – you and them. No matter what. Love is a win-win scenario. 5. Leaning into pain points is what you do best. Let your curiosity lead the way. You're noticing where it hurts and you're not turning away! Hint: this is your secret to great intimacy. 6. You GENTLY silence your inner critic. Silencing a critic fades away like soft snow. Gentle gentle. Show them who's loving (not who's Boss). 7. Loving your friends and family feels like your greatest gift. Including the ones who drive you bonkers. Hello, dissolved resentments. They don't even need to totally get it or say thank you. You leave all these situations thinking "I got to Love!" Sacred usefulness. 8. Listening to your soul is your top priority… and by that I mean, you do the work to tune in. Be receptive to the Wisdom of your soul. Stillness. Bask in it. You've got the love AND the healing. Grace be, D .... Want an inside look at what it takes to lead a heart-intelligent business? Trent Henry, Global Vice Chair, Talent at EY Before becoming the global vice chair of talent at EY, Trent was the CEO of EY Canada. He's seen how the economy has changed and why so many employers and professionals haven't yet caught up. We get Trent to teach a masterclass about how professionals can invest in themselves and develop the in-demand skills that EY, the Big Four accounting and consulting firms, and some top tech companies demand. We dig deep into how professionals can pivot from skills to experience and impact, as the latter is what employers have now focused on in the age of AI, machine learning and new technology. Finally, Trent and Jack share their top advice for people who are job searching and looking to advance their careers. (Hint: It might involve ignoring the traditional career ladder and finding your own opportunities for growth.) http://blindap.onelink.me/ttCg/q1a4hj0o
In this episode, I have the pleasure of interviewing a productivity expert, Leslie Shreve, on how to have a productive day. Leslie talks about the consequences when people, especially leaders, aren't having a productive day and time is lost. She even talks about how poor productivity steals a person's mental freedom and how to gain it back. She names the number one tool for increasing productivity (Hint: It isn't Google). Finally, we wrapped up with three of the biggest myths about productivity. Leslie's Productive Day website features a quiz on your own personal #1 blindspot when it comes to productivity and offers some ideas for what to do about it. I learned I am a Giver (no big surprise there) but she also provides further insight into the blindspot, how it robs me of time and how to address it. I learned quite a bit from this guest and I bet you can, too! If you would like to contact Leslie for more information or to take her program, you can reach her at leslie@productiveday.com.
Being older than 50 isn't what it used to be. Today, the population is aging, people are living and working longer and being a certain age doesn't necessarily equate to a specific life stage. As chief marketing and communications officer of the AARP, Martha Boudreau aims to portray these nuances in how the organization engages with its 38 million members. The organization, which is turning 65 this year, is modernizing its offerings, from building a deeper consumer experience capability to thinking about the future of its iconic magazine. In this episode, Boudreau chats about this journey and shares wisdom on how marketers can better connect with this wealthy and important demographic that often goes ignored. Hint: It starts with employing more people older than 50 at agencies and in creative positions.Listen to this podcast and subscribe to Campaign Chemistry wherever you get your podcasts. Hint: It's Not What You ThinkWhile I was in Lake Atitlan Guatemala I had the lesson reinforced that literally anything we want in life is possible and that it really only takes two simple things. The lake is surrounded by many small and modest villages along with some of the most spectacular resorts and villas that can rival anywhere in the world. That might not sound so special until you hear about HOW these posh places to stay are constructed.Lake Atitlan is surrounded by volcanos, which makes most of the lake-side property very very steep. This results in most of the land only being accessible by boat and after that human power. No trucks, no heavy machinery, not even animal assistance (animals are too big). That means everything to build and maintain these structures is all humans carried often up a very very steep hillside.Often we think that if something doesn't come easy or fast then we must be doing it wrong or it's not for us. If these gorgeous places can be built under these conditions then surely we can create anything we want in our life. What does it take to create what we want? It's not what you think. It's not money. It's not certifications. It's not know-how. It's not luck. Those can all come and go and can be acquired or borrowed. What's required and what can't come from anywhere else but inside of you are these two simple things:Vision and CommitmentIf you have no vision, then there isn't even anywhere to go, so direction to start out on.If you have no commitment then when the road becomes steep or the weather changes, you'll stop, turn around, or give up entirely. When you have Vision AND Commitment then anything is possible and it's only a matter of time before it becomes a reality. If you're not sure what your vision is then my best-selling book "Engineered to Love" (now available on audiobook) https://a.co/d/inqi2Kk is a great place to start. Still in the middle of this slow sports period (aka Sports Dead Zone), but I'll provide all of the latest and greatest as there are some things to uncover with what's going on in the world of sports. On deck: (3:01) Are the Atlanta Braves the best team in baseball? Is this team THAT GOOD? Is it a foregone conclusion that they'll go back to the World Series? I'll unpack their strengths and even weaknesses as they continue to roll with the best record. Then there's the unfolding, yet alleged sordid story of Rays shortstop Wander Franco and his involvement with a teenage girl. Could this possibly be the beginning of the end of what was potentially a Hall of Fame career? The division and wild card races are status quo, but I'll take a peek at the weekend schedule with a few big series (BOS-NYY, ARZ-SD, MIL-TEX, SEA-HOU) as we inch closer to the end of the month. (31:54) The Jets are back in the news (I still haven't watched a second of HBO's Hard Knocks) as they signed former Vikings running back, Dalvin Cook. Are the expectations and pressure to win this year even greater with this signing? I'll get into some injuries (Russell Gage, Treylon Burks & Marlon Humphrey), other deals (Ezekiel Elliott to New England, Zack Martin returning to Dallas) and a sad passing of former Ravens back, Alex Collins who perished in a motorcycle accident earlier this week. (44:05) Sending a heads up as yours truly has produced the first of many vlogs, which'll be broadcast on my YouTube channel at the link below this coming Sunday. HINT: It's baseball related at a surprising location that, if you know me, wouldn't expect to share or tell this particular story. What a mess they've got on their hands in Philadelphia, with James Harden declaring GM Daryl Morey a "liar," and that he won't play on the team as long as he's there. He wants to get traded to the Clippers, and reportedly will make things as "uncomfortable" as possible for the Sixers until he gets his wish. Mercifully, this turn of events has, other than the potential impacts on a conference rival, literally nothing to do with the Lakers. There is no rumor, no supposition, no anything linking Harden to the Lakers that is even two percent plausible. Or one percent. Or half a percent. Given the scope of Harden's star power, that's a nice turn of events, and indicates a change in how this sort of thing works. We saw a glimpse with the post-deadline path of Kyrie Irving, where, sure he was connected to the Lakers but there was no momentum there. What does it mean that the Lakers aren't the automatic "What about?" when stuff like this happens? And how does this Harden moment compare to another one that certainly did impact the Lakers... specifically when Kobe Bryant demanded a trade, called Dr. Buss an idiot and found himself as one of the earliest subjects of amateur video in the summer of 2007. So how does that summer compare to this one? We reminisce. And from there, what does the Harden controversy say about the decision of the Lakers to quickly and enthusiastically give Anthony Davis a max contract extension? Hint: It should make fans feel much, much better about it. HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: James Harden is a cartoon, creating real problems for the Sixers that, in a twist, will not touch the Lakers in the slightest. Is this a new trend? SEGMENT 2: Comparing the Harden controversy with the Summer of Kobe. SEGMENT 3: What the Harden controversy says about the Anthony Davis extension. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Do you love snacks as much as teachers do? Tune into this deliciously entertaining episode of Teachers Off Duty where Lauran, Tell, Bri, and Gabe delve into the delectable world of "teacher snacks". Ever wondered what your teachers stash in their desks? Tell starts off the snack fest confessing his love for candy, while Gabe, mid-conversation with Lauran, reaches over to snag some Cheetos. No one said teachers can't have fun, right? Gabe shares a relatable moment, guiltily munching on Oreos during his students' test. He also reveals his odd fondness for 'grandpa candy', sparking off a trip down memory lane about Lauran's grandma at church. Is project-based learning a ploy to feast on preferred snacks? Hear what Tell has to say on that. But it's not all fun and games - apparently, teachers at Tell's school can only have clear liquids. Discover the hilarious tale of forgotten hidden coffee that followed this rule. In a twist of irony, while Gabe can gulp down coffee, Tell reveals why he avoids it. Hint: It involves an awkward conversation with the principal. The conversation turns serious when Gabe emphasizes the importance of letting kids eat breakfast and ensuring they're well-nourished. But it's soon back to laughs with Tell's amusing story about "Pirate's Booty" snacks and an intriguing discussion on developing allergies later in life. Enjoy a delicious round of 'Good or Garbage with Gabe' that focuses on Chocolate Milk Fridays. Here's the kicker: Apparently, the FDA is considering a chocolate milk ban. Can school life survive this? Bri shares her strict 'no school lunch' policy, while Lauran has a surprising take. This leads to a fiery debate about the quality of school lunches and a nostalgic trip down memory lane involving plate-sized chocolate chip cookies and Otis Spunkmeyer treats. From Gabe's food shoutouts to Lauran's innovative dinner dice for decision-making, there's a feast of food fun. The episode wraps up with Bri's funny tale about a student-run Instagram account that crowned her the 'eating champ'. The last domino to fall in President Joe Biden's gun agenda was toppled by a Fifth Circuit panel. So, we're bringing one of the best political writers in the country. Nationals Review's Charles Cooke is one of the top conservative analysts on both the legal and political side of guns in America. He joins the show to talk about why Biden's pistol-brace ban was tossed. Hint: It wasn't because of the Second Amendment. Instead, Cooke noted the courts have objected to the ATF overstepping its bounds when creating Biden's gun policies. He said that fact makes it very likely the Supreme Court would object on the same grounds. That's because, as presidents from across the political spectrum have taken to expanding the power of executive agencies, the Court has begun to pair back agency overreach. Cooke argued the losing streak is bad for President Biden's reelection. Despite what's shaping up to be an unprecedented 2024 election, which seems likely to include bump stock ban originator Donald Trump, Cooke said the constitutionally-deficient policies will drag Biden down. Especially because the majority of people who've heard about them are the ones they negatively affect. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogleman and I talk about how a Memphis school's security procedures stopped a mass shooting. Special Guest: Charles Cooke.

We've all heard that we need to “stop working IN your business, and start working ON it.” But HOW do you actually do that? Today's guest is a dear friend of mine, Jhana Li. Jhana is (in my own words) an “Ops Ninja”. She's the person you go to when you're ready to drive consistent, compound growth, all while scaling yourself out of the weeds of your company. The world's most successful companies all rest upon a foundation of scalable, water-tight operations… … and in this episode you'll learn actually how you can do that. That + because Jhana and I are friends that love to nerd out all the time, you'll also hear some fun stories — like what Jhana did to get called into the principal's office in kindergarten. (Hint: It may or may not have to do with hanging upside down on the monkey bars with a lack of clothing) This is a FANTASTIC episode if you're looking to not only discover how to build a business with world class operations… but also if you want to have fun and build a business in alignment with WHO you are. ALSO… Exciting news: Jhana also recently partnered with another past guest on the show — Cameron Herold — on a new venture called The Ops Spot. If you happen to be in an ops role right now, you will for sure want to check this out! To learn more about Jhana, visit https://gobeyondcurious.com/podcast/jhana-li/
