Episode 399 of Friends Talking Nerdy takes listeners on a nostalgic and trend-savvy journey as Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dive into two distinct realms of pop culture.SNL Sketches Revisited:In the first segment, the duo explores some of the most memorable sketches from the long and storied history of Saturday Night Live. They reminisce about classics like the hilarious Chippendales sketch featuring Patrick Swayze and Chris Farley, and they break down the absurdity of Massive Head Wound Harry. The conversation flows through a wide range of iconic moments—from the socially sharp satire of Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood and the offbeat charm of TV Funhouse: The Ambiguously Gay Duo to the outlandish fun of James Brown's Celebrity Hot Tub Party. The discussion doesn't stop there; listeners are treated to detailed commentary on fan-favorites like Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker, the smooth criminality of Dick In A Box, and the thought-provoking takes in White Like Me and Black Jeopardy. To cap it off, they also delve into the quirky humor of Schmitt's Gay, sharing behind-the-scenes insights and personal favorite moments that reveal the enduring legacy of SNL's inventive comedy.Grammy 2025 and Musical Moments:In the second segment, the conversation shifts gears to the 2025 Grammy Ceremony. Professor Aubrey shares her keen observations on the event's standout fashion moments, spotlighting daring choices like Jaden Smith's outfit, which sparked plenty of buzz both on and off the red carpet. Tim the Nerd, with his signature enthusiasm, brings up an unexpected twist in musical history: The Beatles clinching a Grammy for their previously unreleased song “Now And Then.” He also highlights how Beyoncé's groundbreaking win for her “Cowboy Carter” album not only redefined genre boundaries but also opened doors for a broader acceptance of country influences among her diverse fan base.As always, we wish to thank Christopher Lazarek for his wonderful theme song. This week, we're covering Season 3, Episode 3: White Like Me, while also going on a bunch of rants about the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade (we recorded on the day it happened, and boy are we ANGRY about it). Cory feels lost in her life, Rachel goes to an Empower America conference and meets Jack Kemp, and Mohammed brings the roommates to an open mic night at his dad's club. Also, Cory upsets Mohammed's girlfriend, Stephanie, with a question about her possibly being half-white, but thankfully learns the error of her ways after a conversation with Mohammed. Other topics include Krystie's house-selling/house-buying news, Rebecca's rude awakening by a cop (literally), Krystie's recent trip to Ireland, the legacy of Jack Kemp, and, of course, the aforementioned overturning of Roe v. Wade. We cannot stress enough how important it is to do something in the wake of all of this happening–protest, donate, volunteer, vote, run for office…whatever you are capable of doing right now, do it as if your life depends on it (which, let's be real, it does at this point.) Because we're so furious about this decision, there is a LOT of swearing– moreso than usual, anyway–so maybe consider listening to this episode when sensitive ears are not present.  Follow us on social media! We've heard that the secret of success is finding our passion, putting the work in it, and keep trying until we finally make our dreams a reality. Still, there is another side of that revelation that almost no one mentions; we need to be honest with ourselves and tell the difference between a hobby in which we are better than the average, and a profession. Joining me today is actress, journalist, screenwriter, entrepreneur, and mom, Brandee Steger. She has written and produced the film "White Like Me," soon to be released, where she tells the story of a black woman that decides to turn into a white man to see if that ensures more job opportunities for her. We talk about her relationship with the entrepreneurial world, the importance of chasing our dreams, and what it takes to change the 9-to-5 mentality. She shares her vision on racism, the secrets for a lasting career, her frustrated dreams of being a professional figure skater, the struggle of black women in business in general, and much more in an incredibly inspiring conversation. An odd racial pecking order puts Indian Americans in a curious place -- outside of whiteness, but distinct from other people of color. How’d that come to be? And is it changing? We explore these questions by revisiting a story from Arun Venugopal, senior reporter with WNYC’s Race & Justice Unit, about how a Kansan community grappled with one of the first widely reported hate crimes following the 2016 election. Then he joins us to check in on that community today and walk through the history of the “model minority” myth -- and how perceptions may or may not be about to change, yet again. Most recently, Venugopal penned “The Truth Behind Indian American Exceptionalism” for the January/February 2021 issue of The Atlantic. COMPANION LISTENING: “White Like Me” (10/20/2016) A history of what it means -- and has meant -- to be white in the United States of America, and what that meant for the 2016 election. “A Secret Meeting in South Bend” (6/18/2020) How a group of Black families in the mid 20th Century carved out a neighborhood for themselves, and tried to make their American Dreams real, despite the terrorism of Jim Crow.  “The United States of Anxiety” airs live on Sunday evenings at 6pm ET. Tim Wise is one of the United States' and the world's leading antiracism activists and authors. His books include Dear White America, White Like Me, Speaking Treason Fluently, and Under the Affluence. His new book is Dispatches from the Race War. Tim Wise reflects on the recent passing of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and how her death has now made America's multiracial democracy even more imperiled by the Age of Trump and his white neofascist movement. He also shares how the Trump regime's move to immediately replace Ginsburg with a white neofascist is but another example of the toxic power of white racism in America and its profoundly negative impact on society as a whole. And Tim Wise counsels that yes, the loss of Justice Ginsburg should upset and terrify all good people of conscience in America but that now is not the time to surrender to defeatism but rather to rally and fight back. Chauncey DeVega calls out the hope peddlers and others of their ilk in the mainstream American news media and political class who are circulating the lie that there are “good” and “principled” Republicans such as Mitt Romney that will somehow swoop in to stop Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump from replacing Ruth Bader Ginsburg with their own henchwoman. While I was jogging (actually plogging) along the Hudson River around 7:30am, a person not wearing a mask stepped into my path, blocking me, saying the person's shoes had been stolen. The person seemed to let me pass, but then threatened me and threw a bottle that shattered at my feet as I ran past. I kept running, the hair on the back of my neck standing up and my adrenaline high. I don't know if the person had a weapon.I describe more and some of how it affected me in the audio.I was first going to say I was threatened since he didn't touch me. I'm not a lawyer so I looked up the definition. According to FindLaw.com's page on Assault Torts and Injury Law:legal scholars define assault as an intentional attempt or threat to inflict injury upon a person, coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm, which creates a reasonable apprehension of bodily harm or offensive contact in another.Notice the words “attempt” and “threat” above. In tort law, assault does not require actual touching or violence to the victim. We use another term for the touching or contact: “battery.”Here are the notes I read from:The story from this morning runningHappens all the time, not daily but throughout my lifeI don't think he did it because black, but I suspect were I not white it may not have happened. Can't say this time. When I stayed in AtlantaFriends say, you can say to us but careful with othersShared about mugged childhood, but still happeningMaybe there is a secret white suburban life I don't know aboutRecently white friends have started sharing how they've been muggedConsistent with Dov's saying how sharing stories will lead to others feeling they can share tooThat's all background. Here is my point: every time I bring up suffering or being threatened, while I may get some listening, the other person always says, remember others have it worse---not that person, not even someone with their skin colorSo they don't know from experience but they're telling me as if I haven't heard before, and they're presuming to know my experienceI don't know anyone's experience but mine, but everyone absolutely everyone dismisses it without asking, presuming it's the caricature in the mainstream. When I hear white people talking about BLM, George Floyd, there's always this mea culpa. Maybe they are guilty, I don't know. I never hear them speak about their problems. Maybe they have no problems, maybe I'm unique, but that people open up with me when I share and they hear I'm not white supremacist or racist---though in today's world white people even mentioning race without saying how they are allies or something making up for guilt or things like that---then they tell me about their experiences, but they insist on my respecting their confidence, which of course I do.So much of what I hear from white people sounds so similar andinauthentic, I don't think they're being open, honest, or candid. Maybemany are as privileged as they say, but people have told me about being attacked, their lives threatened with weapons, and so on.I think about risks maybe not every day, but all the time. And when Idon't, some guy walks into my path, throws a bottle at me, and threatens me.For a while I feared sharing messages like this because people mightsuspect I'm turning into a white supremacist. I came to terms that ifpeople think that about the opposite, I can't let their preconceivednotions hold me from acting for equality. Marvin McAllister is Associate Professor of Theatre at Winthrop University. He is the author of Whiting Up: Whiteface Minstrels and Stage Europeans in African American Performance. McAllister explains the history and enduring power and damage of so-called “blackface” race minstrelsy. He also shares some hidden history about how black folks in America and across the Black Atlantic have performed “whiteness” as a means of striking back against racism – this cultural resistance also includes the centuries-old tradition of “white face” performance art. McAllister and Chauncey also reflect on some iconic white face  performances such as Dave Chappelle's “Clayton Bigsby” and Eddie Murphy's “White Like Me”. McAllister also shares why Robert Downey Jr.'s very controversial blackface performance in the film Tropic Thunder was so powerful – and an example of how and when “blackface” can be used in service to art. Chauncey DeVega warns Donald Trump about the bad luck and horrible misfortunes that will befall him when he defiles the Sioux Nation's sacred ground by hosting a horrible July 4th performance at Mount Rushmore. And because he is such a good and patriotic American, Chauncey educates the public about the racist origins of the Star-Spangled Banner and the unapologetic and enthusiastic white supremacy of its writer Frances Scott Keys. Anti-racism activist, author, and scholar Tim Wise is the guest on this week's edition of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Tim Wise is the author of numerous books including his most recent Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America. He is also the subject of a great new documentary called White Like Me. Tim Wise is a great friend of the podcast and Chauncey's other online work. During this, his second sit down at the virtual bar and salon, Tim Wise does not disappoint. Tim and Chauncey talk about maintaining balance and mental health even while they spend a great deal of time working on issues related to the color line, discuss Donald Trump and alienated white voters, how to deal with white racial fragility and deflection, and adding new tools to the metaphorical toolbox for talking with folks about questions of justice and human rights. In this week's episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey also talks about this weekend's Super Bowl, the Iowa caucuses, and how The New York Times' resident conservative "borrowed" his analysis of Trump and professional wrestling. Chauncey is also brought to bliss by a new soda discovery and shares some scary facts about the horrible state of food safety in the United States.
