With an unconventional path, Jason has learnt business and performance skills that have given him an understanding of what is successful public theatre. Another week another episode! Today I interviewed KnowYourStuffNZ. KnowYourStuffNZ is a community organisation of volunteers operating in collaboration with the New Zealand Drug Foundation to provide drug related harm reduction services at events around New Zealand, including drug checking. I first encountered these guys at a music festival in NZ and I became really curious regarding how they operated, where they started and where they see themselves going forward. Wendy came on to represent the organisation as the Managing Director. Wendy has been active in the field of drug policy since 2007. Educated in social policy and criminology with a focus on drugs at Victoria University, she began drug checking after the prohibition of “party pills” in 2008 when it became apparent that the now-illegal substance BZP was making its way into the illicit drug market after its prohibition. She started checking at music festivals in 2014. If you want to learn more about the organisation, click below. FYI, the service is free of charge to clients if you ever come across them at a festival. This episode was SUPER fun. Sebastian Yeh used to be a dating coach who specialized in helping Asian men find dates. I found Sebastian, funnily enough, on Reddit where he was hosting an 'Ask Me Anything'. I came into this podcast expecting to talk to a guy who was more or less interested teaching guys how to 'trick' women into sleeping with them but I was actually wrong and kind of convinced of the merits of a dating coach (who is ethically minded). Sebastian was a great guest, someone who could just go on about any topic! You can check him out on instagram @iamsebastiansolo. Once again, my tour is coming up! Wohooo another episode. Danny Sewell has a very ironic last name considering the glasses (his joke not mine). Danny is a comedian, artist and friend! Superintendent Mel Aitken is a Police Officer based at head quarters in Wellington. She is currently the National Manager for Safer People which is responsible for the Health and Safety and wellbeing of all employees within the organisation. Prior to her current role, Mel was the area commander of the West Coast of New Zealand. I wanted to talk to Mel about a whole lot of stuff regarding the nature of being a police officer, managing the public's perception of the police especially taking into consideration recent issues in the United States of America and the mental wellbeing of officers in the street. This was a blast! Check out my tour page: https://americanrefugees.co.nz/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gavin-hewitson/message
Today's interview was with Aimon Kong. Aimon is a magician currently based out of Wellington, New Zealand. I first came across this gentlemen when I was walking up the street late at night and saw him performing. He was the first person I had seen performing magic in the street and so I was naturally intrigued by how he was operating both performatively and financially. I had seemingly caught him on the come up, funnily enough. It sounds like things are going really well for him, both as a busker and as hirable act. You can find Aimon's channels below. On this episode, I interviewed Te Rina Taite who recently spent two weeks in New Zealand quarantine having come back from Sydney. Te spent her two weeks of quarantine up in Auckland and gave me the full run through of what her experience was like. Going into this interview, I realised that I haven't actually talked to anyone who returned from overseas during the Covid-19 pandemic. So wanted to learn more about what is involved in going through two those mandatory two weeks, mentally, physically as well as practically. Great episode and thoroughly enjoyable. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gavin-hewitson/message
S Today I interviewed Mr Kozo Kaos. Kozo is a street performer, magician and all round entertainer. I used to bump into Kozo when I was walking down the street in Wellington and one of the things that really interested me was figuring out what life was like as a street performer. One thing that really blew my mind was learning about how street performers earn their money. My first though was that credit cards would have made it harder to earn a living and I really wanted to dive a bit more into the financial section of things and boy did we. Another day another episode! Today I interviewed Nathan Wallis who is a Neuroscience Educator. I first heard about Nathan through a conversation with a colleague of mine who works in the education space. Nathan had done a speaking event which my colleague had attended. The speaking event focused on the importance of early childcare and the early phases in a human being's development. I was really intrigued and reached out to learn more. We talked about the difference between nurture vs nature, the influencing factors in ones development and the importance of the early stages in a child's development (i.e. the first 1000 days). One of the really inspiring things I took from this podcast was that people's personalities and thinking patterns could be changed, regardless of how crazy an upbringing they initially had. Episode 19 everyone... we are so close to episode number 20! Today's interview is with my friend Lucy Roche who is a sex worker as well as a comedian. You may remember Lucy from episode 9 where we just stared at each other for a full hour. I learned a lot from this episode, not really a whole lot in episode 9 though. I learned about how being a sex worker has shaped Lucy's opinion towards men, the in's and out's of the industry and what attracts Lucy to the work. Kate runs a show in Wellington called Naked Women Reading, which, you guessed it, is where women jump on stage naked and read. Hello ladies and gentlemen, today's episode is a little weird. I decided to talk about fitness, working out and general health with my friend Jovan Legetich, whom you can find on Instagram @classics_gym. Jovan is a physical trainer and a JACKED man. While doing the interview, I wanted him to physically train one of my friends and run them through a series of workouts just for a laugh. My friend who went through the workouts is Niamh and you can find her on instagram @quirkykfitness. The episode was fun but certainly didn't goes as planned or as expected. Welcome... to the Great Gamble. My friend Tom Shackleton and I decided to gamble on horses for this latest episode of the podcast. Ben Sedley is a Clinical Psychologist, based in Wellington and the author of Stuff that Sucks: A Teen's Guide to Accepting what you can't change and Committing to what you can and Stuff that's Loud: A Teen's Guide to Unspiralling from OCD. Both of these books can be found anywhere where books are sold but try and BUY LOCAL. This was a great episode that really helped me learn a bit more about topic I have always been puzzled by. We talked about the reasoning behind self harm, the influencing factors that contribute a declining mental health and the state of the world today and how this play's into an individual's state of mind. I highly recommend this podcast episode regardless of your age if you are afflicted by any of the conditions mentioned above. Episode 13 of the Gavin Learns podcast! Today I interviewed two Hare Krishna's named Saumya and Radhika. We talked about what the Hare Krishna movement revolves around, what it means to be a Hare Krishna, and some of the biggest misconceptions around this religion. This was a really illuminating podcast and I got a lot out of it. The two guest were lovely and I am super pleased to have had the opportunity to talk them. While the conversation I had with these two was great, I feel like I need to talk to someone who has left the Hare Krishna movement to get a more round about picture of what is involved in being part of this group. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gavin-hewitson/message

Today I interviewed Amy Munsternam who has been a psychotherapist and a counsellor for the past 25 years. since finishing her Masters in Counselling Psychology in 1997. Following graduation, she worked for two years as a psychotherapist with individuals struggling with substance abuse and mental health difficulties. From there she worked for 10 years at a community mental health center with adults who experienced severe mental illness. Since living in New Zealand Amy has worked five years for a primary health organization that supports individuals with mild to moderate mental health issues and also done some locum work for Victoria University's Student Counselling Services. Amy has been working in private practice since January 2012 and in October 2013, she set up her own practice. We talked about a whole range of issues... actually it was a pretty narrow range. we talked about psychotherapy mental health as well as prescription culture. This was a fun interview, I was a bit more intimidated coming into this one as I hadn't really done to many serious interviews up until this point. I am still learning how to be a better listener, but I am definitely learning how to be more patient! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gavin-hewitson/message
