Poly Styrene, otherwise known as Marianne Joan Elliott-Said was a British musician, a poet, singer-songwriter, and a pioneer in punk music. She is the first multiracial woman to lead a punk band, and continually dared herself to evolve as a musician and human being.  About the Narrator Celeste Bell spent her earliest years living on a Hare Krishna commune in the Hertfordshire countryside with her mother, Poly Styrene. After completing her degree from Queen Mary University of London, Celeste settled in Madrid where she worked as a teacher and formed the ska-punk band, Debutant Disco. After finishing a Master's degree in Barcelona, Celeste returned to London to work alongside Zoë Howe on Day Glo! The Poly Styrene Story, published by Omnibus Press in 2019. They then joined forces with Paul Sng to make Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché, a film to accompany the book. Celeste currently manages her mother's artistic estate, co-curating an exhibition alongside Mattie Loyce at the 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning Centre in Brixton. She plans to tour the exhibition internationally after the pandemic and is currently developing a new film project, with the working title of Mr. Gorbachev and the Krishna Kids. That product of a Somali father and a British mother railed against consumerist culture, and her band's career might have been short lived, but their single, Oh Bondage, Up Yours! with it's bleating saxophone cavalry charge, blown by band mate Lora Logic, was a battle cry to aspiring Riot Grrls everywhere.The other indomitable mistress we wish to spotlight, Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, is still rocking 50 years later. This survivor from America's Midwest by way of England, -  this vegetarian restauranteur/punk legend, who fronted one of the most thrilling acts of the era, scored multiple hits across the pop spectrum, including this classic, Middle of the Road.X-RAY SPEXMarianne Joan Elliot-Said died prematurely at age 53, but she lived abundantly, migrating through several personae. Early on, she was a hippie, sleeping in crash pads and nearly dying from sepsis, which she contracted from stepping on a rusty nail while bathing in a stream. Later, inspired by seeing the Sex Pistols, she had found her calling. Choosing her moniker from the Yellow Pages, wearing braces on her teeth and Day-Glo outfits, she became a sensation. Like a comet, she streaked across the pop firmament and burnt out quickly, being diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1978. She pursued a gentler and jazzier sound for her subsequent solo recordings, and in '83 became a Hare Krishna and a vegetarian. In February 2011 she revealed that she had been treated for breast cancer that had spread to her spine and lungs. She died later that year, yet in her short life she accomplished the nearly impossible: cultural immortality. THE PRETENDERSThe guitar signature, driven by Robbie McIntosh on 1983's Middle of the Road by The Pretenders creates an irresistible force, defining a clear road map for singer, Chrissie Hynde. It feels like she's behind the wheel, with the high beams on, going 120, roaring through the Ohio night, around the bend of a Rust Belt highway. She was already 33, and a single mother, as she tells us in the song. With one fist held high, she assures us that she'll be a survivor, and there's no shame in that. She's listed by Rolling Stone as 114 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of all time, and at 74, she's still going strong - still driving that muscle car of rock. This woman has ageless style and charisma. She is also a citizen of Great Britain, having moved there initially in '73, and almost marrying Johnny Rotten, Sid vicious, and Ray Davies (she has a daughter by the Kink).  After several misfires trying to start a band, her solo demo tape made it's way to Dave Hill, the owner of Real Records who helped her put the original Pretenders line up together, and the rest, as they say is “Herstory”.

The sages of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam tell us that before the creation of the material universe, everything exists in subtle potential within the consciousness of the Supreme Lord. When He glances upon material nature, His will awakens the machinery of manifestation. The universe begins to print itself into being, one layer at a time, from subtle to gross, from vibration to form, from thought into thing. This process is mirrored everywhere around us, and even within us. In the age of machines, the simplest metaphor is that of a 3D printer. The 3D printer begins not with paper or ink, but with information: invisible sequences of digital data, code, shapes, colors, ideas are sent from the mind of a creator into a mechanism that translates them into visible form. The machine does not invent the content; it merely reveals what has been conceived. The same principle governs the cosmos. The material universe is not a random explosion, but a deliberate unfolding, an act of divine printing. The Lord's glance over Prakṛti or material nature is like pressing the "Print" button. The information—the blueprints of galaxies, atoms, and souls—is already encoded in the divine mind. The material energy serves as the printer, the instrument through which that information takes on perceptible form. Just as a printer cannot produce anything unless data is supplied, nature cannot act without consciousness. The Bhāgavatam describes material nature as inert, a machine that awakens only when the glance of the Lord touches it. That glance is consciousness; that glance is will; and it brings everything to life. And Japa is the sound that prints the spiritual world. In the same way, our consciousness is constantly printing our personal reality. Each thought and desire-vibration we emit becomes a line of code in the architecture of our life. This is why the Vedas say, "manomaya prāṇa śarīra netra" "The mind is the architect of form." When we chant the Hare Krishna mantra, we are sending transcendental information into our hearts and the subtle layers of the universe. These sounds are not material; they are Śabda-Brahman, pure spiritual energy in the form of vibration. They contain within them the entire reality: Krishna, the source of everything, His names, His pastimes, and His devotees. So, just making a parallel to remember that whatever vibration we're making is forming the world around us and within us. Japa is the means through which we transform the instrument of our mind to a medium where we can see Krishna. And it requires some practice, because in the beginning, the mind is agitated by various thoughts, moving in different directions. And then talking to somebody recently who is studying the subtleties of the mind and the process of meditation, I came up with this phrase: "benign discomfort." When one practices sitting to chant the holy name of the Lord, one has to tolerate benign discomfort, as the mind might want to move here or there. We should stay in the practice of bringing the mind back to the mantra until it becomes ekāgratā, or one with the mantra. And then we can find great benefit in being fully absorbed in the mantra. So, we're printing our world as we speak and as we chant, and we have to tolerate benign discomfort. There's great fruit in staying the course. If we can achieve one-mindedness with the mantra, we can achieve absorption.
