Safe and Social : A Discussion About Online Safety

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 23, 2021 67:51

In this episode, hosts Christine and Emily discuss online safety. As adults, we don't often discuss how to stay safe while interacting with others online, but we know that online predators exist too. Unfortunately, there are people whose sole goal is to stalk unknowing victims online, then inflict violence in person. Hackers also utilize public information to target and attack strangers. Nowadays, people can have access to our personal information with a super simple Google search—- which is actually quite scary. Some people even post their every move and travel plan on their social media accounts in real time, without thinking about who can access that info or even what they can do with that information. Also, many widely used apps track our online behavior and interactions and either recommend our pages to strangers, or show us certain ads, images, etc. In other words, our information is constantly shared and constantly consumed. It's up to us to protect ourselves and we wanted to bring more awareness to these issues. As always, thanks for listening! Please be sure to share your thoughts on our IG page: inprogress_pod We would especially love to know if you have additional online safety tips. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/inprogresspod/message

Okay, we know. Technically, it's no longer Black History Month. But the thing is, we celebrate our Blackness 24/7, 365 days a year. Today's episode focuses on all things Black. In the beginning, we discuss Daniel Kaluuya's segment on the the Higher Learning show on The Ringer YouTube channel. The segment is linked down below. We take time to reflect on some of his statements, primarily his statement that it doesn't make sense to ask Black people, who themselves love Black people, why non-Black people don't like Black people. Why are Black people constantly having to explain racism, when it's not an institution that we created? What are your thoughts about this? We'd love for you to share your thoughts via Instagram (@inprogress_pod). We also dive into a few other issues tied to racism and Anti-blackness, one of them being the current season of the Bachelor, which features a biracial bachelor. The bachelor, Matt James, is both Black and White and is regarded as the first Black bachelor in the show's history. During the course of the show, allegations of racism came out against a contestant, and for some unknown reason, the host came to her defense and seriously downplayed her actions. Then, the host resigned. We discuss our thoughts about the whole situation. Suffice to say, it has played out exactly as we expected. An article is linked below with more details. We'd love to find out more about what Black history means to you or if you have any other comments about this episode! As always, frop some comments via IG @inprogress_pod! Thanks for listening! Nigeria, the native home of hosts Christine and Emily, is indescribably beautiful, overwhelmingly abundant, and rich in both talent and culture. However, as many of you well know, despite the beauty and the abundance, police brutality and harsh conditions have also plagued Nigeria for many, many years. Recently, these issues came to a head with the #EndSars movement. SARS, or the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, was created in Nigeria in 1992 and tasked with handling armed robberies, kidnappings, and other similar violent crimes. Rather than reducing crimes, instead, SARS officers themselves have inflicted the same crimes on Nigerian citizens as they have been tasked to prevent. Nigerian citizens, especially the Youth, have been arrested, tormented, harassed, and even killed for a number or trivial reasons, including but not limited to: their choice of clothing, their hairstyle, appearing to be “rich,” owning nice things, appearing to look like a “criminal,” owning technology, etc. In October 2020, the Youth decided to fight back by having peaceful protests all throughout Nigeria. The demand was simple: Freedom for all, peace and justice for all, and better pay, training, and psychological evaluations for officers. After two weeks, a curfew was put in place on October 20, 2020, and many protestors continued protesting at the Lekki Tollgate. While protesting, all lights in that area were turned off and in the pitch darkness, the army arrived and started shooting the unarmed, peaceful civilians. Many were injured and many were killed. The Nigerian government has only recently acknowledged their role in this heinous act, and the actual count of those affected by this incident is still a mystery. Though we are just releasing this episode in November 2020, we actually recorded this a mere 5 days after the Lekki Tollgate Massacre. Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters in Nigeria. You shouldn't have had to risk your life to fight for your right to live. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.” Unfortunately, this still rings true today. In light of the recent developments in the Breonna Taylor case and the popularization of the phrase "protect Black women,"  we wanted to dissect its true implications. This episode is the start of a larger conversation and we hope you, our Community, continue to discuss issues, unlearn behaviors, and perpetuate the safety of Black women in every space they occupy. We recorded this episode mere days after the horrific shooting of Jacob Blake and unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman. This year, collectively, we've dealt with one tragedy right after another. We're processing our pain and anger each day and working to find healthy ways to cope. We hope you're able to do the same and hope you have folks in your corner that can support you. As the title suggests, this episode is about self-care in the age of social media and social unrest. After discussing this topic amongst ourselves, we came up with the following six strategies to help you stay sane in the midst of chaos: Recognize your worth and value. Know your limits. Be intentional about who you follow. Be conscious about what you consume. Allow yourself to experience joy- especially during times of grief and despair. Educate yourself about the issues, but not to the point of exhaustion. Have healthy coping mechanisms. Thank you for listening! Please let us know your thoughts! So far, in 2020, it seems that there's been a major social or political event every. single. day. So for Episode 2, we discuss several recent events, including COVID-19, changes to USPS and the resulting chaos, Black lives in the U.S., and Megan thee Stallion. In the midst of this global pandemic, we've witnessed more loss and change than ever before. Not just of people, but of our former ways of life and former modes of operation. Unfortunately, the only change we haven't seen is total, unified recognition of the humanity of Black lives here in the U.S. Breonna Taylor's murderers still roam free, as do Elijah Mcclain's murderers, and so many others---more than we can count. Until we know justice, we won't know peace. Our greatest hope is that much like the changes we've seen in our day-to-day lives, policies, and systems, we will see laws at the federal level that ensure the freedom and humanity of all marginalized populations.
