In this reflective and wildly entertaining episode, legendary surfer, writer, and director Sam George joins The Lineup to unpack over five decades of chasing waves, meaning, and himself. With the release of his memoir Child of Storms: A Surfing Memoir, In Progress, Sam shares the stories behind the stories—how a lifetime of surfing became a mosaic of moments that transcended simply riding waves. He opens up about everything from the formative sting of Dave Parmenter's tough love to the rare swagger of Tom Carroll, and the soul-searching honesty of writing about a failed marriage and cancer journey with his ex-wife. The duo discuss surf identity, travel, and the thrill of never feeling like you've worked a day when surfing is the job, and much more. Follow Sam here. In Progress is out weekly venting session, in which we unload a bit on the issues we've been tackling lately - at PT we find group therapy intellectually stimulating, occasionally cathartic, and always fun - so we're letting YOU join in. We're always all ears for your input at ProgressTexas.org.
Welcome to the first edition of In Progress, our new weekly group session in which the Progress Texas staff gathers to discuss, process and attempt to make sense of the latest developments in the crazy world of Texas politics. And, what a way to start. After 30 years of trying - against the members of their own party, and certainly in spite of public opinion - the Republican dream of taxpayer-funded kickbacks to wealthy Texas families to subsidize their private schools is on the edge of becoming reality. How have our public schools gone from being seen as the backbone of many Texas communities, to being a scrap heap to be dismantled and sold off? What's the next move for Texas Democrats? And, how should Texas voters respond? The PT staff gathers to try our best to make sense of a tragically nonsensical situation. Thanks for listening! What happens when you turn 40 (and you also have boobs)? Well, since May 2023, the USPSTF has recommended that women at average risk for breast cancer start screening with mammograms beginning at age 40, and undergo mammography every other year. These updated recommendations are still “in progress” and the USPSTF cites the urgent need for more research on: breast cancer screening for people with dense breasts (nearly half of all women), how to particularly protect women of color In the US, there exists a long history of health disparities across screening and treatment for breast cancer. The Task Force discusses, for example, that Black women are 40% more likely to die than White women, and too often get aggressive cancers at young ages. So, Your Doctor Friends are taking a page from America's Sweetheart (and breast cancer survivor herself) Katie Couric. You may remember Katie both underwent a colonoscopy AND a mammogram on the Today Show, and YDF Julie wants to do the next best thing- consult with a breast cancer expert before she gets her FIRST EVER MAMMOGRAM! Your Doctor Friends have the absolute honor to present our guest today, a consummate badass, breast cancer survivor and breast surgeon, to walk Julie through her own personal risk assessment and screening process for breast cancer. Finally, we want to take some time at the end of this episode to share the story of a dear friend and colleague, a fellow sports medicine doctor, and absolute amazing human being, who very recently lost her life to breast cancer. She is the inspiration for this episode and Your Doctor Friends think it's important to talk about her, and are so grateful to her family for their consent to share her story. Learn more about Dr. Kristin Abbott here. Alright, let's get on with it, can we answer the question: Can I protect myself from breast cancer? ENTER Dr. Liz O'Riordan to help us find out! It's great to see numbers and sales rack up, but as a creative, it's helpful to have a visual representation of your progress. In Episode 119 of Just One Simple Thing, you'll learn four fun ways to keep your eyes literally on the prize.I've been traveling some lately and it's nice to be home. When I'm traveling, I start off focused on the destination. I want to get there and get off the road. But shortly, I start looking for the mile markers. Those markers tell me how far I've gone, and how far I have left to go.In Jeremiah 31, God was talking about gathering his nations that had been dispersed, and he said, “Set up road markers for yourself; make yourself guideposts; consider well the highway, the road by which you went. Let's talk about a few ways you can create visual markers for your business or ministry to reflect the progress you are making.1. The classic kanban chart: The chart is divided into three sections: To Do, Doing (or In Progress) and Done. As you work on tasks, you move them from one section to another. Not only does the kanban chart help you see progress, it also is an accountability tool. Keep your eye on that Doing section. If you start accumulating things there that you have started, but not finished, you know it's time to focus on actually finishing things to make real progress.2. Put a name to a numbers goal: I had a goal to talk to 50 new people. After each call, I put the name on a sticky note and put the note on a big poster board. If the call resulted in an ongoing interaction, I put a check-mark on the sticky note. This process could have turned into a numbers game with a dopamine hit for every check mark. With the poster board near my work area, I often prayed over the names. It reminded me that my work isn't about growing numbers. It's about helping actual people with their problems using my expertise.3. Use your progress to motivate people to be part of something important: During registration for the Do Your Thing retreat, as people sign up, I put their name on the floor plan of the house where we are staying, and share that on my social media. When they can picture themselves staying in a specific room, they want to be part of it. 4. Make a thermometer graphic: This seems to work especially well for sales or fundraising goals, because it makes people feel like their contribution, no matter how large or small, is part of making something special happen. When your destination still seems far away, look at your markers and see that thus far, the Lord has helped you, and be encouraged that He will help you to the next marker.ACTION STEPPick one of these visual markers and find a way to use it with your own goals. Snap a picture and share it on social media. Be sure to tag me @doanewthing so I can cheer you on! Thanks so much for listening in. I'm so grateful for every person who listens, shares, or leaves a review. Those things are an encouragement in a space that can feel very lonely, and I appreciate your generosity. Why Use a Personal Kanban Approach? Research shows that up to 80% of working professionals experience stress in the workplace, with the primary causes cited as being family responsibilities and large workloads. When modified for personal use, the Kanban method can help you to manage both work responsibilities and personal tasks, saving you time, increasing your efficiency, keeping your life organized, and helping to prevent feelings of overwhelm and burnout. In this article, we'll delve deeper into what personal Kanban involves. We'll show you how you can use it to streamline your personal and professional lives, and the easiest ways to keep Kanban on hand to access it whenever you need it. You can apply the principles of Kanban to virtually any situation to enhance your productivity and help you tackle multiple responsibilities. It can be easily adapted to users of any age, profession or learning style, and is especially well suited to people who have long and constantly growing to-do lists at work and at home. Personal Kanban boards are also a great solution for people who battle to prioritize tasks. Options like a personal Kanban app provide visual to-do lists that you can prioritize by urgency or order of importance to stay ahead of your responsibilities. The simplest and most effective way to create your own Kanban board is to open up an Excel spreadsheet or Word document, use a whiteboard or a piece of paper, or use a Kanban management app to create three columns: To Do Currently In Progress Completed Next, you can create individual ‘cards' for each task you need to do, adding them into the To Do column. Once you have all of your cards at hand, you can label them according to low, medium or high priority, and then choose which high-priority task you'd like to start on first. Some people like to multitask, and a personal Kanban board does help to make multitasking easier by allowing you to keep track of multiple projects at once. However, you are also free to address one activity at a time. When you start an activity, move its card over to the In Progress column, and then to the Completed column once it's finished. You can use a Kanban board to keep track of all the things you need to accomplish on a given day. Creating a to-do list helps you to organize your tasks into categories, depending on how urgent they are and whether or not you have started on them yet. This gives you clear visual progress of how many responsibilities you've tackled each day. This could be anything from going to the store, fetching the kids from school, fixing an appliance or learning how to make an invoice or mastering another skill you need for work. When you have a good idea during the course of the day, noting it in your Kanban board helps to ensure that you don't forget about it and encourages you to put it into action. Once you have a strong idea written down, you can then build on it, set goals towards it, and transform your ideas into reality. If you have a busy and active family or social life, your personal Kanban board can help you to meet all of your personal obligations towards the people you care about. Create a family board with tasks like children's play recitals and sports games, birthday parties, celebrations, family dinners, and other can't-miss events to keep yourself organized and ensure that you don't miss anything important. Using a Kanban board with your family will help to ensure that everyone's needs are met and that you can build a stronger relationship with your partner, children, and extended family and friends. Kathy Crowley - who also had no idea how to make a podcast. After a few months of "are we really doing this?" we opted to just push record and see what happened. So, I want you to imagine you are living in a community where the closest grocery store is not within walking distance, you have no reliable access to transportation, and you are surrounded by liquor stores, McDonald's, and Burger King. Now you can see the two parts of that definition: the grocery store with healthy food exists, but it is too far, and you can't get to it. Whereas within walking distance is nonnutritious food. I want to challenge our audience to pay attention to these two concepts in the communities around them.Arreaza: I have noticed a concentration of fast-food places lining certain streets. Now that we understand the concept, do we know if there is a way to quantify or measure food insecurity? Nausheen: Yes, Dr. Arreaza. So, the term “food swamp” actually describes what you just stated. To answer your question, yes. Food insecurity is actually measured by the USDA by a 6-18 item questionnaire - asking questions such as: Were you worried if food would run out before you got money to buy more? It is conducted as an annual supplement to the Current Population Survey. Arreaza: The Current Population Survey (CPS) is the primary source of labor force statistics for the population of the United States. It is sponsored jointly by the U.S. Census Bureau (bee-uro) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The CPS is conducted monthly. Nausheen: The 2021 questionnaire identified 12.5% of households in the U. S. as being food insecure. However, this may underestimate the true number of individuals who may be suffering from food insecurity. Arreaza: Screening for food insecurity is not been routinely done in many clinics. Food Insecurity: Preventive Services. An Update for This Topic is In Progress. LAST UPDATED: Jul 24, 2022. So now, let's talk about the connection of this to obesity. What factors in general increase the likelihood of obesity?Nausheen: Sure! Obesity is classified based on a person's body mass index or BMI, which is your weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). A BMI of 30 or greater is considered to be in the obesity category. Obesity is affected by several factors, such as a person's genetics, level of activity, and a high-calorie diet consisting of low-nutrition food.Arreaza: How does food insecurity play into this? Nausheen: Think back to the example we discussed earlier. If a person is experiencing food insecurity due to a lack of access, they will use what is around them (fast food, 24-hour mart without fresh foods) so they can put food on the table. If it is due to financial inaccessibility, they will choose to, say, go to Jack in the Box for their $5.00 deals. Both of these lead to a diet filled with non-nutritious food. This shouldn't come as a surprise: most people that experience food insecurity are likely to be living in low-income communities. The generalization here is that these communities tend to have fewer parks, and if they are present, there tends to be a lot of litter and a cloud of unsafe space hovering over it. Arreaza: I see what you mean.Nausheen: These people will probably be less likely to go out for walks and take their kids out…leading to a sedentary lifestyle. The last association I see is that of mental health. People who are struggling to find food are likely to have stress due to their circumstances and there is a relationship that has been found between depression and the increased likelihood of developing obesity. As a recap, there are three effects of food insecurity that contribute to obesity: lack of adequate nutrition, lack of physical activity, and poor mental health. Arreaza: So, there are several factors of food insecurity that seem to be making individuals more likely to develop obesity. Why does it matter? Nausheen: Well obesity is the gateway to several other diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, which are known to the medical profession as "silent killer diseases." In short, what we typically refer to as "that person is larger built" can have major adverse effects on health and can substantially reduce a person's longevity and quality of life. If we can understand and reduce risks of developing obesity, we can prevent the onset of the disease and/or prevent the progression to more severe outcomes. To bring this more into perspective, the CDC found that from 2017-2020, 1 in 5 children had obesity and about 2 in 5 adults had obesity, with an overall prevalence of 41.9% in the U.S. Arreaza: Let's talk about possible solutions.Nausheen: I think the best solution to this issue has to be two parts. 1. Increased access to healthy foods. 2. Nutrition education on how foods you put into your body impact your health both now and long term. I work with urban farmers in Pomona, CA as part of a grassroots effort to increase access to nutritious foods. Arreaza: Tell me more about it.Nausheen: The system consists of several small-scale community farms that produce chemical-free, pesticide-free, fresh vegetables and fruits that are sold to the community members at a low price or a “pay what you can, take what you need” basis. I believe replicating this system in other communities is effective because 1. It is important for the people to know and trust where their food is coming from, and 2. People can volunteer to help the community farms thrive which not only allows for the sustainability of efforts but gives them a reason to be outside and be active which helps combat obesity! Arreaza: I believe nutrition education is a key element to combat obesity, but the battle is unfair. I see there needs to be a better effort from our government to control such things as the false advertisement of so-called “healthy foods” and “miracle supplements” that promise the cure of obesity. I feel like there needs to be more control of these vendors and pay for false science. Nausheen: Nutrition education itself is also important so that people understand what nutrients their bodies need, what foods can give it to them, how to cook those foods, and lastly how it all affects their health. This should start from elementary school with short lessons embedded into the school curriculum. Arreaza: Thank you for sharing that. This brings our episode to a close. If you are or if you know someone who is struggling with food insecurity, find some resources in your community such as food banks, Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and other resources. Nausheen: Find community gardens where you live._______________Conclusion: Now we conclude episode number 128 “Food insecurity and obesity.” Nausheen explained that a lack of access to fresh and healthy foods is linked to increased risk of obesity. Dr. Arreaza called for improved controls for scammers and pseudoscientists that frequently commit fraud to patients who are struggling with obesity. This week we thank Hector Arreaza and Nausheen Hussain.
