We are taking a break from our usual Covid coverage to talk about the other big story for 2020, the upcoming election. We wanted to make sure we understand how voting will look and feel this year given everything going on, so we are bringing on an expert. We are delighted to be joined by Carol Harvey, Chair of the League of Women Voters for Somerset and Hunterdon Counties. Carol talks about the process of mail-in voting, getting your ballot, dropping it off, ensuring that you follow the procedures so that it's counted, and what to do if you run into any issues whatsoever. You can find more resource from the League of Women Voters at https://www.lwvnj.org/ (https://www.lwvnj.org/) You can also check with the state's 2020 voting portal at - https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote.shtml (https://www.nj.gov/state/elections/vote.shtml) There you can ensure you are registered, instructions for voting, locations to drop-off your ballot, or vote in person if you choose, and how to track your vote. The good news for New Jersey is that the transmission rate is still relatively low. However, in one demographic group, 19-24 year olds, transmission rate is 3x as high, suggesting that going back to school is leading to spikes in Covid-19 cases across the Garden State. That being said, Big10 football will happen, which means Rutgers University will have the chance to play. Some great news for the Garden State as we shift well into https://patch.com/new-jersey/parsippany/gov-murphy-nj-well-stage-3-coronavirus-reopening (Stage 3 of Coronavirus Reopening). That means indoor dining, gyms opening up, and even the chance to return to the movies. Of course, there are still a lot of questions about schools across the state and concerns on how these changes will impact, especially with the holiday weekend. And it seems the https://www.nj.com/coronavirus/2020/09/nj-reports-329-new-covid-19-cases-11-more-deaths-transmission-rate-hospitalizations-increase.html (transmission rate is ticking up a bit), so we'll see how long these last. But there's some more hope as researchers in https://elemental.medium.com/a-supercomputer-analyzed-covid-19-and-an-interesting-new-theory-has-emerged-31cb8eba9d63 (Tennessee crunch Covid data through the world's second fastest supercomputer) and find some pretty compelling results. What we think about the possibility of going to a gym in the age of Covid when they're allowed to reopen safely. We open up with a look at some personal news that impacted our show, a loss in the family for Patrice. What the funeral process looks like as a result and the difficult grieving. And why cemeteries were a popular spot last mother's day. It still won't be the same but it's a welcome relief for those stuck in their homes for the last two months. It feels like a year ago when I saw Joe Pardo down in Florida at a podcasting conference. It just the beginning of March. And in that time, so much has changed for all of us. For Joe, he's had to adapt to the changes to work here in the Garden State as the CFO of https://pardos.net/ (Pardo Fleet Solutions) in Sewell, NJ. But he's also an event organizer, with hopes of still doing a live event in September, https://www.independentpodcastconference.com/ (The Independent Podcast Conference). And yet since shelter-in-place orders were brought out, he has put on several virtual conferences to help people at home take advantage of this extra time to create new content. We talk about his coaching business, how to market during these trying economic times, why he is putting out so much resourceful content in the form of virtual conferences, how he and has family were in Disney World just before everyone was told to stay home, his sister's efforts to bring Easter to children across the Garden State, and his own health struggles that was most likely an untested case of Coronavirus. Head on over to the https://www.facebook.com/groups/2846479588770520/ (Facebook Group) (full link below as well) to see the live stream and to join us next Friday. We'll take questions and encourage people to join us for the in-person experience. On today's show, we talk about some of the ways we've adjusted, including how we're procuring groceries and engaging social distance visits with grandparents, parents, and children. Wearing masks more often to go out and how hard it is for medical professionals to power through. And of course, as this continues on, we note how the pandemic is starting to hit closer to home with deaths being reported by people within our social networks. And what plans are actually being made to help business owners recover if they are forced to shut down because of shelter in place orders. For restaurants, especially smaller, local establishments, Covid-19 has meant major challenges. For some, the new rules could mean an end to their business. Jersey Jobs and Biz's Patrice Sikora caught up with Steve Kotsadam who owns and manages the Falls Kitchen, in Little Falls, Passaic County. Steve has made adjustments so he can stay open, but times are tough and filing forms online for aid programs is problematic. BTW, full disclosure...Patrice is a customer and loves the Falls Kitchen's pea soup which is served on Thursdays. You can reach Steve at TheFallsKitchen@gmail.com. For Josh Cary, the show must go on. That doesn't mean the impacts of COVID-19 are being felt. As the host of the Hidden Entrepreneur Show and a partner in On Air Brands and Podmax, adjusting to this new norm has been a challenge. They've had to close the doors to their podcast studio and cancel their in-person events meant to help businesses get discovered. But for Josh there's also been an emotional impact. Despite hosting a show called The Hidden Entrepreneur, he actually thrives off physical interaction with others. And having had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, I can vouch for the fact that his energy can easily lift any spirits. As you can imagine, social distancing is keeping him from one of the things that always lifts his spirits and the people around him. In this chat, we talk about how the shelter in place rules have impacted him personally, the hits to the business, but the steps they are taking to pivot and adjust to keep things moving.
