How Number 1 Podcasts Get Made (and found) – Jason Hoch

Insider Interviews

Get two insider scoops in Epi 26 on how to create -- then share -- top podcasts: First up, podcast veteran Jason Hoch, creator of many number one shows, shares with host E.B. Moss how he made stuff work at HowStuffWorks.... Then Jason tells how serendipity led him to collaborate with Tenderfoot TV to make the groundbreaking show, Atlanta Monster ...and what he thinks are the ingredients for not just chart-toppers, but compelling stories that are essential listening today. Jason's success continued at Imperative Entertainment with Boomtown, (soon to be cross-over IP as a TV show!) which was an eye-opening experience and led him to launch his own company, Wavland, to capture real human narratives. Boomtown But first, Jason had to get a passport... then learn why E.B. calls him the Forrest Gump of podcasting.... Since then, the company has already created and delivered the podcast chart topper, “Noble” – a deeply-reported story which resonates with audiences on multiple levels.   'I have an unquenchable thirst for fresh original stories and the people behind them. And if we don't tell these stories soon, they're bound to be lost forever.' -- Jason Hoch, CEO, Chief Creative Officer, Wavland Wavland Chart Topping Podcasts   NEXT: It's a brief but brilliant bonus interview with Mathew Passy, the creator of the Podcast Beacon, an NFC device that simplifies the podcast discovery process, making it as easy as a tap on your phone.  In the previous episode of Insider Interviews, also captured during Podcast Movement, discoverability and ease of user experience in finding/listening to podcasts was high on everyone's wishlist. Mathew's new tech gives us hope for that wish to be a reality.       Key Moments: 00:00 E.B. When Jon Newman and Danny Breslauer launched https://www.thescarletspotlight.com/ (The Scarlet Spotlight podcast) in early 2018, they knew they were aiming to serve an existing, underserved fanbase. That fanbase? The diehard fans of the Rutgers University collegiate athletics. Two alumni from Rutgers University themselves, Jon and Danny were avid fans of the school's current sports programs, as well as its extensive history. Being involved in the community themselves, they understood that the school's fanbase was craving content relating to the school and its sports programs. With the Scarlet Spotlight, they decided to build a format that they would enjoy listening to, schedule some interviews, and take a crack at it themselves. Over the course of the next few years, the duo would go on to release well over 100 episodes, talk with some of their personal sports idols, and deliver excellent, hyperniched content to a fanbase that was previously underserved. They have found tremendous success and show no signs of slowing down. In this episode of the Towncast Podcast, Mathew Passy sits down with Danny and Jon to discuss the origins of the Scarlet Spotlight. They talk about where the idea came from, how it's going, and what the two have in store for the future. Some key takeaways from this episode: How the Scarlet Spotlight came to be How they leveraged their networks to get the podcast rolling Jon and Danny's philosophies on podcasting, and how they approach it week by week Some thoughts on the potential for local sponsorships Ideas for how others could take their local sports programs - even at the high-school level - and create content based around it Resources Check out the https://www.thescarletspotlight.com/ (Scarlet Spotlight) podcast! https://twitter.com/scarletspotru (Follow them on Twitter) – Follow us on social media! https://twitter.com/TowncastStudios (Twitter) | https://www.instagram.com/towncaststudios/ (Instagram) | https://www.linkedin.com/company/towncast-studios/ (LinkedIn) | https://www.facebook.com/TowncastStudios (Facebook) Learn more about Towncast Studios here:  http://www.towncaststudios.com (www.towncaststudios.com)  Are you already a community-focused content creator? How many podcasts have you been a guest for? As we discuss in today's episodes, being a guest on other podcasts is one of the highest returns on investments of time you can have. A lot goes into being a good guest, message, sound quality, and the right type of podcast.  It can be overwhelming all by itself, just podcasting add guesting on top of that, but as Mathew helps us see there is a process, it's a lot easier than we think once we get started. But as most things seem really difficult in the beginning once we get started, that first jump is always much shorter than it looks. When Roe vs Wade was overturned, did you wonder how you could help? "Every podcaster has a voice" is the common language in the industry, but what happens when the voices combine to advocate for change? That is precisely what Arielle did with the recent Roe vs. Wade overturned issue. “ …That's what really gives you some creativity with a local podcast. There's a story behind every door in your community.” — Mark Bologna In this episode, Towncast founder Mathew Passy sits down with Mark Bologna, creator of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast. Beyond Bourbon Street is a great example of a long-running and successful "towncast". The show was inspired out of Mark's personal pursuit to learn more about his beloved city of New Orleans. In addition to that, Mark wanted to educate the public - local and beyond - on the true depth and beauty of his town. As Mark explains in the episode, New Orleans has far more to offer than just the familiar imagery of Mardi Gras and partying on Bourbon Street. In addition to covering the city's current events, diverse personalities, and local businesses, Mark also spends some episodes diving deep into New Orleans' 300-year history. Over the course of the show's 150+ episodes, Beyond Bourbon Street has evolved from a passion project into a thriving source of content for locals and curious minds alike. Today, Beyond Bourbon Street has tallied over 1 million downloads. According to Mark, his only regret along the way was not pressing record sooner! Among the topics discussed: Mark shares several lessons & tricks of the trade that he has discovered over the years Mark's advice for aspiring towncasters How being a good neighbor and shouting out local businesses eventually landed Mark some sponsorship opportunities The initial motivation that got Mark to press record and dive into podcasting How the lens of content-creation can allow you to see your community in a new way, and open many new doors (both figuratively and literally!) In our first episode, host "Towncast" Joe Gangemi tells you what the Towncast Podcast is all about. To put it simply, our goal is to teach you how to launch a podcast - or a towncast - of your own. We'll do this through topical episodes where we cover one aspect of the podcasting craft at a time - from the fundamental to the advanced. Don't know what a Towncast is? Quite simply, it's a form of content - usually a podcast - that is specifically intended for a geo-local community. Think a podcast, but tailor-made for a particular town, city, or state. In some episodes, Towncast founder Mathew Passy will sit down with podcasters who are already successfully producing geo-local, community-focused content. In some cases, these shows have already been running for almost 10 years! As you'll discover in this episode and future ones, the possibilities for towncasting are only limited to the people, the places, and stories that are outside your door. Some of the points we cover in this episode: The premise of the Towncast Podcast What is towncasting anyway? Some ideas on how to start a local podcast of your own Joe opens up about his past struggles with social anxiety/fear of public speaking Some thoughts on the philosophy and theory behind podcasting This episode's bonus takeaway: If you could share one message with the world, what would it be? — Learn more about the Towncast Podcast at http://TowncastPodcast.com (TowncastPodcast.com)

I lived alone, in what ways did this change my behaviors?  What is it like sitting in front of a jury? How did I learn how to podcast?  Don't be afraid of the process, believe in yourself!Local networking, business cards, contents, apps. What app blocked me and my messaging? On this holiday week, with The Perpetual Chess Podcast having recently turned 5 years old, it seemed like an appropriate time to feature myself as “the guest” on Perpetual Chess. In order to help out, I brought in longtime listener of the pod, chess journalist and improver, Chris Wainscott, to perform hosting duties. Chris and I covered lots of ground, as he asked me about the origins of Perpetual Chess, its growth over the years, my approach to interviewing people, favorite interview types and “dream guests.” He asked probing questions about  my own chess origins and improvement efforts. Although I do prefer being the interviewer rather than the interviewed, it was fun to play the other role and to answer so many good listener questions. Every new podcaster wants to know how to boost their engagement. The answer is a lot simpler than you think. Engagement comes easy when it's coming from a place of passion. If you're faking it, your listeners will see through it. Welcome to Should I Start A Podcast,  where each week, Ronsley Vaz, with the help of a star-studded entrepreneurial guest lineup, explores why you should start a podcast, build an audience, and how to keep them hungry for more. If you're thinking about starting a podcast or simply looking for a better way to get your message out to your audience, then this is the podcast for you. Mathew Passy has been podcasting since before podcasts were a “thing”. After a start in broadcasting 15 years ago, Mathew's career evolved into podcasting. He's worked in production for major organisations like The Wall Street Journal and individual clients all over the United States. His first podcasting experience began like the storyline from a binge-worthy TV show. The radio station newsroom that Mathew was working in at the time needed a way to transition into the digital world. He suggested converting the early news segment into a podcast. It worked, and it's still going strong to this day.  From then on, Mathew worked his magic in the podcasting world. He had his hand in hosting and producing massively popular shows like Tech News Briefing and Your Money Matters. He eventually used his passion to create his very own show, the PodUp Podcast, which gave an inside look at the industry.  Mathew is now the host of Podcast Me Anything. It's a question and answers formatted show, where listeners can get all of their burning podcast queries answered once and for all. Besides being the connoisseur of podcast hosting, Mathew also runs his own business. The Podcast Consultant is a one-stop-shop for podcast hosts. Mathew runs audits on their shows, telling them what areas need tweaking and what areas are killing it. In this episode, Ronsley, Kaili and Mathew get into what makes you an “expert”. Mathew tells us the things that he thinks newbies should be aware of. And he also gets into his biggest point about podcasting. In order to be authentic, you absolutely have to have a genuine passion for what you're talking about. Also within this episode: The complicated production process of early podcasts How Mathew uses his radio experience in podcasting Why you can start a podcast for basically any reason, as long as you're passionate about it The magic of affiliate links How a podcast can give your business credibility  How to stand out in a crowded niche The process of a podcast audit Why you should always lead with value in marketing The 3 things Mathew recommends for interviewing Links: Mathew on LinkedIn Mathew on Twitter Mathew on Instagram The Podcast Consultant Podcast Me Anything Causepods

Episode #019We celebrate our second year of doing Virginia Podcaster's Association (VAPODA) meetups at Germanna Community College!VAPODA becomes our new platform for teaching podcasting to podcast newbiesWe explore what happens when we looked up a new podcaster's podcast using PocketCast - We learn that different podcasts can have the same name!We throw Friend of the Show Mathew Passy a whole lot of love! The Word of the Day is “conversating” (Triple-Word Scrabble Score)Introducing “Tim the Podcast Optimizer”What did we learn?Welcome to Podcast Discovery Optimization (PDO)This is the “What does my website look like on other browsers?” song.Followed by the “What does my website look like on other phones?” It's the B-side sleeper hit. Now, it's “What does my podcast look like on all apps?”… or even the better question: “IS my podcast in all the apps?”You have to look up your podcast because you can't fix what you don't know!We thought a podcast name needed to be unique. Nope! Turns out you can have the EXACT SAME NAME in Apple Podcasts (iTunes)! We didn't know that was possibleWe find out that not all podcasting statistics are created equal and not all hosts let you know where your listeners are coming from.We know that not all hosts use IAB Standards but when you mix downloads with streaming with listens we can see why newbies get confusedWe learn that Tim has never seen Game of Thrones!Additional ReadingGermanna Community CollegePodcast MentionsCausepodsPodcast Me AnythingThe Podcast ConsultantSupport the ShowEvery episode is a work of passion that requires a lot of coffee!
