On this exciting episode of Fishing the DMV, I travel to the Cushwa Cold Water Fish Hatchery in Williamsport, Maryland, to sit down with Greg Anderson, Coldwater Fisheries Production Manager, and Matt Lawrence, Coldwater Fisheries Biologist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Together, we dive deep into the heart of Maryland's trout fishing scene and uncover the science, strategy, and passion behind the Maryland Trout Stocking Program. From the logistics of “put-and-take” rainbow trout fisheries to the careful protection of native brook trout streams and Maryland's hidden gem brown trout waters, this episode is packed with insider knowledge for anglers of all levels. We spotlight some of the state's most prized trout waters, including the Gunpowder River watershed in Baltimore County—home to Bee Tree Run, Little Falls, Western Run, and the legendary mainstem stretch between Prettyboy and Loch Raven Reservoirs. We also explore Maryland's brook trout strongholds, from the Catoctin Mountains to the upper Savage River system in Garrett County, where anglers can find the state's densest populations of wild trout. Whether you're a seasoned fly angler or new to cold-water fishing, this episode offers a fascinating look into how Maryland manages, protects, and enhances its world-class trout fisheries. Please support Fishing the DMV on Patreon!!! https://patreon.com/FishingtheDMVPodcast If you are interested in being on the show or a sponsorship opportunity, please reach out to me at fishingtheDMV@gmail.comMaryland Trout Fishing Page: https://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/pages/trout/index.aspx Maryland 2025 Trout Stocking map: https://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/pages/trout/stocking.aspx Maryland trout stamp  https://mdoutdoors.maryland.gov/login  Brown Trout Fishery: https://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/Pages/fish-facts.aspx?fishname=Brown+Trout  Brook Trout Fishery: https://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/pages/brook-trout/maryland.aspx                  Please Checkout our Patreon Sponsors Jake's bait & Tackle website:                                 http://www.jakesbaitandtackle.com/ Catoctin Creek Custom Rods: https://www.facebook.com/CatoctinCreekCustomRods Tiger Crankbaits on Facebook!! https://www.facebook.com/tigercrankbaits Fishing the DMV Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Arensbassin/?ref=pages_you_manage Fishing the DMV Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/fishingthedmv/?utm_medium=copy_link   #troutfishing #fishingtheDMV #fishingtipsSupport the show

Rural Voice: Community members in Wadena talk about solutions to social isolation

In October 2023, Rural Voice co-founder and host Kerri Miller traveled to Little Falls to talk about social isolation in greater Minnesota. Community members said it's easy to feel disconnected and alone, especially if they struggle with some kind of mental health challenge. This September, Miller took the same question to Wadena. Social isolation is when a person objectively doesn't have relationships or contact with others. It's similar to loneliness, which is when people subjectively feel isolated. Both are rampant in rural communities, especially among older residents. And because social isolation is tied closely to other health outcomes, it has implications for all. Rural Voice in Wadena Wadena residents swapped stories of recognizing isolation in their community. They also shared ideas for combatting it, which ranged from systemic overhauls, like bringing in more therapists, to more personal interventions, like how churches and community organizations can respond to neighbors who seem alone.  Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.

It was Thanksgiving Day, 2012, in the small town of Little Falls, Minnesota. That morning, cousins Nick Brady and Haile Kifer set out to visit family for dinner. But when they never showed up, their loved ones were thrown into a desperate search. By the next day, their worst fears were confirmed—Nick and Haile had been killed inside the home of 64-year-old Byron Smith. At first glance, it looked like a tragic but lawful case of self-defense under Minnesota's Castle Doctrine. Smith claimed he'd been terrorized by repeated break-ins and had finally snapped when the teens entered his home. But the investigation revealed something far more chilling: Byron Smith hadn't been caught off guard. He'd been lying in wait. This week, we dive into the audio recordings that changed everything, the trial that divided the community, and the chilling words Smith used to justify what he'd done, which leaves us with the question: was this self defense… or murder? Along the way, I'll comment on the following places: Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Crosby, Brainerd, Little Falls, St. Cloud, Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and the communities around Lake Pepin. I obviously won't be going into great depth about any particular place but instead want to give you a sense of the variety of attractions and experiences you can expect along the Mississippi River, with some picks about my favorite spots (and where to get good food and drinks). In the next episode, I'll cover the rest of the Great River Road from Lake Pepin to the Mississippi's confluence with the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois.

Mary Louise Day, born in 1968 in Little Falls, New York, grew up in a turbulent household with her sisters Kathy and Sherrie, marked by instability, foster care, and abuse. After her parents' divorce, her mother Charlotte married William Houle, a military man whose relocations added to the family's isolation. By 1980, living in Seaside, California, 13-year-old Mary faced severe abuse from William. In July 1981, following a violent incident where William beat her—allegedly over a sick dog—Mary vanished. Her mother claimed she ran away, and the family never reported her missing, silencing any mention of her.   Nine years later, in 1992, Sherrie, haunted by her sister's disappearance, filed a missing person's report. The case went cold until 2002, when Seaside police reopened it. Investigations revealed William and Charlotte had cashed Mary's Social Security checks after her disappearance, suggesting foul play. In 2003, a search of their former home uncovered a child's shoe and soil indicating decomposition, backed by cadaver dogs, but no body was found. Interviews with Charlotte and William were chilling—William admitted to beating Mary and hinted at a “demon” killing her, yet lacked sufficient evidence for arrest.   Then, in November 2003, a woman claiming to be Mary surfaced in Phoenix, Arizona, during a traffic stop. “Phoenix Mary” matched Charlotte's DNA, closing the case, but inconsistencies—like her accent, vague memories, and sudden ID acquisition—raised doubts. She lived with Sherrie briefly, but tensions and her erratic behavior fueled skepticism, especially from Kathy, who doubted her identity over forgotten childhood details. In 2008, cadaver dogs again hit on a former Houle residence, yet no remains were found.   By 2017, as Phoenix Mary battled cancer, new Police Chief Judy Veloz re-examined the case. Further DNA tests confirmed Charles Day as her father, and a photo from the 1980s, verified by facial recognition, supported her identity. Her memory gaps were attributed to trauma and alcoholism. She died in 2017, leaving unresolved questions: Was she truly Mary? If so, where was she for 22 years? If not, who was she, and what happened to the real Mary? The cadaver dog hits remain unexplained, deepening the mystery of this dark, perplexing case.   Chapters: 00:00 Welcome to The Dark Oak 01:40 100th Episode Celebration and Giveaway 07:10 What Happened to Mary Day? 1:00:30 The Branch of Hope   Sources: 48 Hours Inverview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KheUErGCFJA   Voll, C. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Actually a very active lifeLife-long art lover Ted Pfohl of Little Falls wholeheartedly recommends that people see the work of Charles Gilbert Kapsner while it's on view at Studio Pintura Fine Art Gallery in the Northrup King Building in northeast Minneapolis. Kapsner is based in Little Falls but trained in Florence, Italy in the studio of Nerina Simi (1890-1987). The retrospective includes over 30 still lives, portraits and other works, gathered under the title of “Odyssey — A 50-Year Artist's Journey: Not a Still Life!” The show's run has been extended through Feb 8. Ted Pfohl muses on the odyssey of Kapsner's work: I can in all integrity state that I am captivated by the stories within the works of Master Artist Kapsner, a designation earned within and from his colleagues in the world of fine art. Today, he voyages within oil and charcoal. He has been at several harbors within fresco. He has created a monument of paintings honoring the five branches of the United States military. Each carefully chosen and curated piece provides glimpses into the creativity of a gifted helmsperson. There are flowers, bottles of wine, his wife — whom he calls Lady Catherine — still lives and portraits. As I was moving within the currents of the visuals before me, there were several times where my feet would not move as my gaze rested upon the piece before me.— Ted PfohlTickets to ParadiseJewelry artist and silversmith Jessica Prill of Faribault works across the street from the Paradise Center for the Arts, and she says the exhibits there are always a source of inspiration. She recommends taking in the new visual arts show, which opened this week and features painters Laura Andrews and Montana Becker as well as stained-glass artist Bob Vogel in the main gallery. Art by students of Bethlehem Academy will be featured in the Creger Gallery, which often features student work. There is an artist reception on Friday from 5-7 p.m., and the exhibit runs through Feb. 15. Speaking about the stained glass art of Bob Vogel of St. Peter, Jessica Prill says: [His work] blows my mind. He has done stuff with glass that I didn't know was possible. He has found a way to make it look like he's painting with glass. He uses the patterns in the glass like brush strokes. He does lamps, panels, fused glass: they're just incredible.— Jessica PrillRemember: They're on Thursday nightDana Drazenovich of St. Cloud loves live music, and she wants people to know about Monday Night Jazz, a band that has been performing jazz for 20 years in St. Cloud. Despite its name — a holdover from a previous location that was open on Monday nights — the sextet plays most Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Veranda Lounge in St Cloud. Dana says: I feel like Monday Night Jazz is just a gift to St. Cloud's music scene, because I'm sure it's introduced plenty of people to the genre, and it's probably even made fans out of people who might not have otherwise even heard jazz performed live. They take a lot from the Great American Songbook, Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein. You'll hear songs like “All the Things You Are” and “Mood Indigo.” They throw in a few originals here and there, too. They've got drums, piano, bass, guitar, sax and trumpet, so it's a big, full sound. And if you're lucky, you'll get to hear guitar player and vocalist, Muggsy Lauer, scat. There's a lot of laughing between songs, a lot of joking back and forth and they just put out the tip jar and go.— Dana Drazenovich

Nobel prize laureates are pushing back against President-elect Donald Trump's choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. In a letter from earlier this week, the group asked Senators to oppose Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s confirmation to the job. They say he would “put the public's health in jeopardy and undermine America's global leadership in the health sciences.”Kennedy has promoted conspiracy theories including one that pushes that COVID-19 was created to target certain racial groups and give other groups immunity. He has also denied the link between HIV and AIDS, a scientific discovery that has helped to treat and prevent AIDS around the world. Kennedy has also embraced the debunked theory that childhood vaccines cause autism. Dr. Brian Kobilka, a 2012 Nobel Laureate in chemistry is one of the scientists trying to prevent Kennedy from being confirmed as leader of the Department of Health and Human Services. Kobilka is originally from Little Falls and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. He's now a professor at Stanford University and joined Minnesota Now to talk about his concerns.
