Some newer immigrants to Floodlandia were surprised by last week's article celebrating two West Virginia natives — Don Redmond and Chu Berry — who became legendary jazzmen.“I'm sorry,” one of the new friends confided, “but to me the idea of West Virginia conjures up fiddles and banjos. I've never thought of it for jazz.”He's forgiven. Many don't realize the Mountain State's musical traditions are more diverse than stereotypes suggest.Meet MaceoIn fact, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of one of the greatest jazz standards of all times, and it was written by an extraordinarily prolific West Virginian who was a major influence in 20th century music.Maceo Pinkard, born in Bluefield, WV, in 1897, the son of a coal miner and a school teacher, was educated at the Bluefield Colored Institute, class of 1913, and wrote his first major song — called “I'm Goin' Back Home” — the following year. (Today Bluefield State University holds a festival each year to honor of its famous alumnus.)Pinkard wrote hundreds of tunes, including many for stage and screen, his greatest being “Sweet Georgia Brown,” which he published in March 1925. Yes, she might have been a sweet Georgia peach, she was mountain girl at heart. Click here for The Flood's latest take on the tune from a recent rehearsal. As reported here earlier, the song that would top Maceo Pinkard's obituary when he died in 1962 at age 65 was co-written with lyricist Ken Casey.Soon after “Sweet Georgia Brown” was composed, it was introduced to the dancing/singing/humming/whistling public by bandleader Ben Bernie. As that nationally known orchestra did much to popularize the number, Pinkard cut Bernie in for a share of the tune's royalties by giving him a co-writer credit. They both could have retired on the royalties. But Pinkard was far from done. He went on to compose iconic tunes such as “Sugar (That Sugar Baby of Mine)” and “Them There Eyes,” the latter famously popularized by the legendary Billie Holiday in 1939. Maceo and DukePinkard also was a mentor to a young Duke Ellington — 20 years his junior — introducing him to New York City's music publishing industry during the early stages of Duke's career. That kindness helped Ellington lay the foundation for future success. After meeting at Barron's nightclub in Harlem in the spring of 1926, Pinkard took Ellington downtown to "Tin Pan Alley," the center of the music publishing world on Broadway. There Pinkard arranged for Ellington to have his first meeting at Mills Music. Irving Mills later became Ellington's manager and business partner, a critical boost for the careers of both men.Years later, Ellington said “thank you” to Pinkard by recording some of his early champion's compositions, including the standards "Sweet Georgia Brown" and "Them There Eyes," highlighting Pinkard's musical legacy. Paul Whiteman and Bix BeiderbeckePaul Whiteman — whose band included Bing Crosby, Hoagy Carmichael, Frankie Trumbauer and Bix Beiderbecke — brought Pinkard in to write material for them. Segregation of the mid-1920s onward thwarted Whiteman's efforts to hire African-American musicians for his band, but he was determined to play the music of Black composers and Pinkard was his first choice. For instance, in 1927, Pinkard published "Sugar" and, in June 1928, Whiteman's band was the first to record it, scoring a huge hit. Since then, "Sugar" has been done by everyone from Louis Armstrong to Fats Waller (who performed it on the pipe organ). To this day, jazz artists still cover it. Beiderbecke and Pinkard became friends and when Bix went out on his own, Pinkard penned "I'll Be A Friend With Pleasure" for his band (featuring Gene Krupa on drums, Benny Goodman on clarinet and Jimmy Dorsey on sax). Recorded in September 1930, it was among the last numbers that Bix recorded before his death at 28 the following summer.African American West VirginiaPinkard's story embodies the resilience and creativity of the Black community of West Virginia's Mercer County. Growing up in Bluefield, Maceo was shaped by the region's rich heritage, which flourished around institutions like the Bluefield Colored Institute (now Bluefield State University), a hub of African-American culture in the early 20th century.Established in 1895, two years before Pinkard's birth, Bluefield State emerged as a beacon of opportunity for Black West Virginians. Besides providing access to higher education in the industrialized southern West Virginia, it also was a cultural epicenter, hosting luminaries such as Langston Hughes, Fats Waller and Duke Ellington. During the 1950s and 1960s, Bluefield emerged as a hidden gem on the map of the so-called “Chitlin Circuit,” a national network of venues and businesses that provided platforms for emerging Black jazz and pop musicians during the latter years of institutionalized segregation. Read more: https://www.wvva.com/2024/12/31/beckley-travel-plaza-celebrates-opening/ #2 – From WVDNR – In the quiet, snowy forests of West Virginia, the elusive snowshoe hare can be found hopping across the landscape. Known for their white seasonal coat and oversized feet, this remarkable small game species plays an important role in our state's high-elevation ecosystems. However, little is known about their population here. That's why West Virginia Division of Natural Resources biologists and researchers at West Virginia University have teamed up to shine a light on this secretive species. Population density studies are also essential because they show how animals use their habitat and how available resources meet their needs. This information helps wildlife managers create and improve young forest habitats, which benefit hares and other game species. Additionally, knowing where these animals live helps managers anticipate how they might react to future climate changes, ensuring better long-term conservation strategies. In the three weeks since the West Virginia Division of Tourism launched its new West Virginia Paranormal Trail, nearly 5,000 visitors from 39 states and three different countries have already signed up. Now, the trail has added four new destinations, for a total of 18. Cryptid Mountain Miniature Golf in Morgantown is one of the new attractions. Featuring creatures like Bigfoot, Mothman and the Flatwoods Monster, the indoor course incorporates the elements of “cosmic” mini golf, including blacklight and state-of-the-art video and audio systems. The former Parkersburg CVB building has been repurposed to support arts in the community…coworking spaces provide resources and meeting space for remote workers…and a proposed hiking trail in Mercer County was once used by Civil War troops…on today's daily304. #1 – From NEWS & SENTINEL – Artsbridge has purchased the former Convention and Visitors Bureau building to be its new headquarters. “A new location still in downtown Parkersburg means Artsbridge continues its long partnership with other arts, entertainment and service organizations in the Mid-Ohio Valley,” said Karen Waller, Artsbridge board member. The new facility, located at 350 Seventh St., represents an investment not only in the organization but in the very fabric of the community. With this building, Artsbridge will have the capacity to enhance its programs, host more events and create a welcoming space for collaboration and support. Meanwhile, the Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau has relocated its welcome center to 113 Ann Street. Even so, some remote workers yearn to be in a structured, professional environment away from productivity-draining distractions at home. Enter local coworking spaces—shared office spaces where remote workers from different companies and industries can work alongside one another as if they are in the office for the day. These spaces, with their modern, open floor plans, typically offer amenities that professionals crave, such as secure Wi-Fi, printing stations, and private rooms for meetings. Base Camp, First Ascent and Ascend WV's coworking space in Morgantown, for example, even offers standing desks for members to stretch their legs, and a kitchenette to prepare snacks and lunch. Are you a West Virginia grad who has a remote or hybrid position? First Ascent, the program specifically designed to help young professionals launch their careers in the mountains of West Virginia, offers coworking benefits through free access to its six Base Camp locations across the state. This hiking/bicycle trail would stretch from the vicinity of Camp Creek State Park to the Bluestone River on the former Bluestone Land & Lumber Company logging railroad along Camp Creek. A grant of over $360,000 from the West Virginia Division of Highways Recreational Trails Project with a 20% county match is funding the project, according to Mercer County Commission President Bill Archer. Civil War scholars say the trail is likely part of the path taken by officers and troops of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry to the Battle of Princeton in May 1862, he added. This spontaneous and engaging conversation with speaker/author, Toni Campbell and host, Sue Duffield, is a delightful outcome when two Jersey girls get together to share their hearts, their passion for ministry and their love for reaching their communities for Jesus. Toni has over a decade of experience in commercial writing. She taught "Writing for Radio/TV" at a local community college for five years and is as comfortable in front of a microphone as she is behind a keyboard, which is where she has spent much of her time writing the book and blog, Lakeside Lessons. In 2012, she received Mercer County's Woman of Achievement Award (in NJ) for her outreach work. After reading The Externally Focused Church, Toni was so challenged by the concepts it presented that she began an outreach ministry at her church as a volunteer leader. That experience is the basis for her book, Jesus Has Left the Building: The Nitty-Gritty of Creative Church Outreach. It takes the time-consuming guesswork out of church outreach planning with step-by-step nitty-gritty details along with fine-tuning tips to ensure that you won't have to reinvent the wheel in outreach efforts. www.sueduffield.com www.tonicampbell.org

Off-road trails inject new life into Mercer County tourism…Applications are open for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program…and hike with a pack goat on the Greenbrier River Trail…on today's daily304. #1 – From METRO NEWS – Mercer County leaders recently celebrated the 13th anniversary of the Pocahontas Trail System of the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. The Pocahontas trails have helped muster in a slow rebirth in the western part of Mercer County after years of decline in the coal industry. “Typically we'd have folks open up a cabin here or a cabin there or expand their existing business. Now, we're starting to see some larger investments like resorts which are four to six million dollar investments. Those are great for our area creating jobs and other opportunities for our local communities,” said Chris Zeto with the Hatfield-McCoy Trails. A ride from Bluefield to Bramwell on U.S. Route 52 will confirm the assertion. Every mile or two reveals signs catering to trail riders with lodging, ATV repairs, dealerships, restaurants or other services oriented directly to off-road enthusiasts. Coleman is the founder of The Greenbrier Goat, a pack-goat touring company for cyclists and day hikers. He aspires to open up the majesty and wonder of the Greenbrier River Trail to all people, helping to make the trail and a day camping excursion experience accessible to those with physical disabilities. Coleman works closely with the Forest Service, the West Virginia Department of Tourism, and the Small Business Development Center. The Department of Tourism linked Coleman with Cranberry Adventures, whom he cites as his “in-state mentor,” as they also use animals to help people explore Appalachian forest trails. “We could give a chance for a group of people with less mobility, younger or older, a destination on the river trail that they could strive for that's accessible, and they could roll into the goat powered base camp and have a safe haven, first aid, cold water, and just a place to have shelter. And meet a pack goat,” he said. You can find The Greenbrier Goat on Facebook.
