JustShiatsu is a podcast hosted by Justin Zelinski a Shiatsu therapist. In this podcast we explore Chinese medicine and how those principles are explored through bodywork, specifically Shiatsu, to manifest a change in others health or perspectives on life. This ancient form of healing, touch, has not been given the accolades it deserves and this podcast will educate and bring to light the attention it deserves.
In this episode I am exploring ideas around being neurodivergent and hypermobile. I have been looking into these topics and how Shiatsu might be of benefit to these conditions which in some cases these two seeming different things can overlap.
In part two of this two part series I am going to share some of my experiences with using consciousness and offer some new takes on ideas I am developing in touch therapy.
This is part one of a two part series on exploring consciousness in treatment. In the first part I take time to setup the structure from which you can get an understanding to the approach suggested I am using in touch therapy.
This is a brief intro to the next couple of podcasts where I explore the possible role consciousness might play in touch therapy.
In this episode I explore a sense of having a need to talk to our clients more then feel our clients and my opinions around such a topic.
In this episode I share something I wrote. I was contemplating this question and how it pertains to my work in Shiatsu. So I sat down one day and this is what came out.
In This episode I explore my personal path in Shiatsu and how this has shaped and influenced my approach to this art over time.
I have been exploring the benefits of Observational Touch in my work. I wanted to share some of my experience so far and what I think is happening when we do this. I think this is a very powerful form of touch.
In this episode I explore some ideas around safety and healing. How do we make our clients feel safe? how do we feel safe? how do we touch safely? Plus, other ideas on diagnosis, some of my experience's, and personal choices of style.
I have been exploring others ideas in Shiatsu and find this often leaves me feeling less like myself. I sat down and wrote an article about this to help clarify my authentic self. I though it might be nice to share as we often have common experiences in being human. If you are experiencing this dynamic in your work maybe seeing me do this for myself might inspire the same in you. If you are interested in knowing more about my specific thoughts/experiences with shiatsu I share more those through this self exploration.
In this episode my writing focuses on ideas in diagnosising. It then moves into ideas of treatment. It finishes with going into details of techniques of a physical and metaphysical nature. I hope this series was helpful to some. For those of you who might not be bodyworkers, I hope this adds clarity to a medicine that at times can be hard to understand. For those of you who are bodyworkers, I hope this adds clarity to the methods you are currently using or gives you new ways to think about working. As this is the most I have put my self out there in my personal expression of the art. If anyone feels they want to in anyway reach out. Please, I welcome the interaction. you can contact me at justzelinski@gmail.com.
In this episode my writing focuses on exploring the idea of channels deeper. It then moves on to ideas of health and how we get sick. Then, finishes with looking at how the body is designed to combat such disharmonies that enter the body.
in this episode the writing covers why I have decided to write such a document. It then goes on the start to explain my views on concepts in the medicine start with the simple ideas of yin and yang. Moving to the more complex ideas of the seasons. Then ending with giving overviews of the organ functions.
In this episode I give a general overview to the following 3 episodes. This is a series of episodes where I share a document I have been writing over the years and feel it has reached a point where it is a clear expression of my views on the art of Shiatsu. It starts with me explaining the foundations of the medicine and ends with me giving specific details on techniques.
I have spent a lot of time contemplating these "channels" of Chinese medicine. In my studies I have run across contradictions and have found some of my own understandings or musings. In this podcast I am less concerned with answering questions instead I leave you with some things worth thinking about!
What does it mean in body work to add coherence to the system? I share my journey with this concept and give my thoughts on how this can be done.
I explore my ideas on how our elemental expressions can be view as expressions of self and how those can benefit us. I also explore how some new ideas I have around the bodywork of Shiatsu might prove beneficial in this regard!
In this episode I share some of my personal shifts in my shiatsu practice and talk about how I came to decide on the particular methods I use. How I am diagnosising the movements in someone and the possible importance of understanding ones constitutional type.
In this episode we go over two chapters as these chapters both are on the shorter side, especially after my edits.
We continue to explore my personal rewriting of the Su Wen. This week we cover chapter 4.
This is continuing our journey through the Su Wen exploring fundamental concepts in Chinese Medicine to deepen our understanding of how to use this medicine to bring about healthy changes in ourselves and others.
This is the first Chapter of the Su Wen. This is one of the foundational texts in the medicine and I am sharing my reimagined or rewritten version where I am trying to condense the text to its foundational principles to get a deeper understanding of the medicine and than using those to explore ways to use them in my Shiatsu practice. In the first chapter it is just setting up the idea of what it means to live in a healthy way. If you have listened to any of the earlier podcasts I often express what is said here!
In this episode I cover the direction I will be going with the podcast for awhile. This was one of my original ideas for the podcast. Exploring the classical writings for fundamental truths that can be used in bodywork. I have spent many years going over the Su Wen to understand the medicines foundations and in that process have rewritten all of the book in my words to add clarity for myself. This wasn't done with the intention of sharing it with the world but to add something to the medicine for me personally. After a few conversations with others I always get asked the question if I plan on publishing this because someone else might appreciate it. This is my attempt to share this with the world so I hope it adds value to you as it did me. in this episode I kind of go over the flaws in my technique as well as what that might mean for the spawning of new ideas too. Good or bad I will let you be the judge.
In this episode I explore if healing touch and pleasurable touch are one and the same.
In this episode I finish my analysis of the five elements. I go over waters functions of spirit and how one of a water disposition may be seen as moving through the world. If you missed the other podcasts on each element, I recommend you go back and listen to those as well. When you get an understanding of them all, you can understand them individually better too!
In this episode I continue the exploration of the elements in their many facets.
In this episode we explore the concept of earth in the medicine. From the functions of its paired organs to the presentation of someone strong in these qualities and how it effects the way they move through life.
In this episode we continue the elemental series of the life dynamics. I examine the function of organs, specifically through this aspect of spirit, and how it can influence the way you move through the world.
in this episode I explore what is means when someone talks about your liver or gallbladder in Chinese medicine. It is not probably what you think! I go over general ideas of what this can mean and then explore the presentation of what it might look like if someone tends to move through the world in a wood presentation. If you don't know what that means listen to find out!
In this episode I explore some of my personal experiences recently with being more refined in this aspect of extending Ki and the benefits I am seeing. I also explore the writings of Koichi Tohei who is the founder of an art called Kiatsu. I explore some of his theories and understands to bring light to what all this might mean and why it works so well.
In this episode I explore an idea of what it means to access ones spirit and to bring that into a healing context. This is an idea stated a couple times in the classical texts of Chinese medicine. In those works though there isn't much in the expression of how to do this. I was listening to someone read the book Art of Peace by Morihei Ueshiba. This is a book on the translated expressions of the founder of Aikido throughout his life time. As I was listening I realized a lot of the expression in this book spoke to me and this idea of accessing ones spirit within. What follows is my attempt to examine this work and compare it to the fundamental truths of life. As well as how these foundation truths reflect in the healing arts and shiatsu particularly. I am a firm believer that when we devote ourselves to a single path in life it can enlighten us to the truths that exist in all paths in life.
In this episode I explore the idea that since Shiatsu is typically done as a full body treatment there are advantages to this sort of approach. Distortions in the bodies flows can happen either at or away from the area that is being effected. I explore this concept as I have understood it from the classics of Chinese medicine.
In this episode I spend some time reflecting on some of the specific reasons I do the things I do in my personal practice and why I think they have benefits for other people.
In this episode I look at the idea that we have 5 base personalities or constitutions that influence our preferences in life. I also talk about how our attitude can reflect our imbalances.
In this episode, I explore the physiological processes that happen through the eye of Chinese medicine. I explain in detail how touch is allowing those pathological factors to be released through the Zen Shiatsu model.
In this episode I explore this often overlooked aspect of the medicine, the divergent channels. There isn't a lot of literature on these channels, but I have had the opportunity to be introduced to them by a teacher and have been exploring them ever since. I wanted to share some of the thoughts and ideas I have been exploring, as well as some others that I have run across. The one thing I have found is that a lot of complex issues can be affected by working with these channels.
In this episode I discuss how touching certain sections on the body has specific effects on how the body responds. This is a personal study on point dynamics of Chinese Medicine and how they can be used to help the ones we love.
In this episode I look at the idea of spirit and how it relates to healing.
In this episode, I explore some of my thoughts on what it means to heal.
In this episode I share what is that I feel when I am working on someone. I often get this question after a session. I think most people expect me to have some great insight into their movement through life, but this in not the case. The insights are often gained through the theory established from thousands of years of Chinese medicine. What does this work look like if we remove a lot of the theory and express what the sensation of touching another person is like with an intent to restore health.
In this episode I share my views on how the combined functions of the channels can be described as providing a correct timing to the body.
In this episode I explore how we can look at how someone is moving in relation to the world around them. It is through understanding the principles of yin and yang that we can determine what is proper timing. When this timing gets disrupted we can then make adjustments to the spaces that determine the proper movements in the body. This in turn can reset the body back to its proper timing and restore health.
I explore some thoughts and ideas I have run across through my self exploration of breathwork. I think there might be a lot of unexplored potential in the breath that can help us feel better about life. I share some of the experience I have observed in myself and others and how these reflect a better state of being.
I often think that talking about qi movement can sound so esoteric and hard to understand. I think Aikido has a good representation in a physical form of how healing movements can be expressed. So, I explore the physical movements of aikido as an expression of what is happening within someone and how those movements allow healing to happen.
