Clip 1: 'In biodynamics, we attempt to meet the whole person. Over time we can settle. We can include the complexities without disappearing, without speeding up. One day you'll skilfully notice this bone, notice this shape, it's safe, there's no trauma. Wow. I can finally let go of that pattern as a whole gesture.I shift from the inside. My breath changes. My heart changes. My gut opens. My head feels free and there's a movement and an expansion in the whole head, the whole person.A deep, beautiful, incredible letting go from the inside. That's biodynamic craniosacral therapy. We have to start in that place of safety, that wide deep relationship that acknowledges a whole person with all sorts of levels of stories. That may sound inefficient and time consuming. It's absolutely not. It's the quickest way I know of working. We're getting into this territory of aligning with the Dao. Aligning with an intelligence that's greater than our intellect. If we find safety, if we relate to these natural rhythms and forces, if we can pay attention in the right way, then we can facilitate these movements and directions. We can facilitate these letting goes as sort of a shedding. Just an internal softening. Change in this model is about soft letting go rather than dramatic forcing.'Episode Notes'Non doing' is something I first learnt about from my study of Zen Shiatsu. 'Zen in the Art of Archery' (Herrigel 1953) opened up a whole new world for me. I still think this is the best book if you want to understand biodynamic craniosacral therapy. From Zen I quickly discovered Taoism. My understanding was deepened by the teaching of Franklyn Sills. There was real joy in my time as a tutor at the Karuna Institute hearing Franklyn make links between BCST and his study of Taoism. There was a clear focus on change emerging from within facilitated by the presence of another. In his later writing, WG Sutherland, the founder of the cranial osteopathy, radically changed his early focus on biomechanics. 'Don't try to drive the mechanism through any external force. Rely upon the Tide' (Sutherland 1990). This expansive model of trusting the tide, is foundational for the biodynamic model. The power of cranial work comes from its gentleness. The ability to facilitate change without force. In a session, when I feel something let go from the inside, it is one of the most exciting things I know. In this webinar I will try to draw out some of the principles and skills we teach in biodynamics that are rooted in non doing. The Return to Embodiment: consciousness, culture, creativity and flourishing
Jamila Kekulah Kinney (she/they) is the creator of The Moving Soul, a holistic movement practice that utilizes curiosity, focus and self observation to explore body awareness, body conditioning, and self-inquiry. Jamila's multifacted body and movement training includes GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® methods, Pilates, dance, dance/movement therapy, mindfulness training, somatic meditation, Reiki, yoga and Zen Shiatsu. As a life long learner they believe that "uncovering the gifts of being human can occur through developing a relationship to self through mindfulness and the body." In our conversation, Jamila begins by describing her embodiment as originating through suffering and pain; in order to manage the discomfort, Jamila moved. They emphasize the importance of acknowledging what we don't know so that we may "be open and curious to meeting ourselves and what is, in the moment." Jamila observes and interacts with the forces both internal and external that restrain and constrict how we are allowed to exist and move in our bodies. In follow up conversations, Jamila and I have discussed how internal forces include but are not limited to personal/familial traumas or mental habits of self-criticism or fear. Although Jamila doesn't specify in this conversation the external forces that disempower, this is invitation to identify all conditions –-systemic, intergenerational, social, and cultural-- that live in our collective consciousness and often separate us from the possibility of flourishing together. In particular, I want to call out the dominant cultural forces that oppress bodies, especially for Black, Indigenous and people of color, for women, for LGBTQIA+folks, for those with disabilities and anyone who deviates from the prescribed ideal fostered by industries and structures that capitalize on the insecurity and shaming of our bodies. As the United States reels from yet another white supremacist act of violence, I want to also remind us all that violence against others begins in the mind, in the consciousness, in how we conceive of bodies of others. This work, the work Jamila does, offers a way through. Jamila offers online and in person classes and individual sessions through her website: "https://www.themovingsoul.com/" https://www.themovingsoul.com/ She can also be found on instagram: @themovingsoul To support the labor of love that is The Return to Embodiment, visit https://www.patreon.com/returntoembodiment

Right after graduating from Cloud Watson School of Fine Arts, Shireen became a Reiki Master, pursuing her education and graduating from The Canadian Reiki Institute of Toronto. That led her to further her studies in spiritual psychotherapy, so she studied at The Transformational Arts College of Toronto. Simultaneously, Shireen went to Kokoro Dojo in Toronto where she became a Zen Shiatsu practitioner, and also became certified Ayurvedic practitioner from The Ayurvedic School of Toronto. In this episode, I explore the physiological processes that happen through the eye of Chinese medicine. I explain in detail how touch is allowing those pathological factors to be released through the Zen Shiatsu model.
Sifu David Wei is a 16th generation lineage holder of Wudang Zhang San Feng Pai, and a global instructor of Wudang Daoist wellness arts and traditional Chinese acupressure massage. Under the direct guidance of Daoist priest, Master Yuan Xiu Gang, David completed over 11,000 hours of formal training at the Wudang Mountain Traditional Taoist Martial Arts Academy of China, in 2007, at which time he was accepted as a senior disciple. During those five years, David practiced internal martial arts, medical Qi Gong and meditation. He is also trained in medical massage, Tui Na, Zen Shiatsu, Acu-oil, and Lomi Lomi; and is a certified Wat Po therapist. Prior to Wudang, he trained in traditional Shaolin Gong Fu and classical Chinese brush painting with renowned Master Y.C. Chiang at Wen Wu School. David has since travelled globally, conducting workshop intensives in China, Thailand, Bali, Czech Republic, Sweden, England, Germany, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, and across the U.S. In 2012, David founded the Wudang West Cultural Heritage Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit wellness ministry, based in Oakland, California, committed to the practice and preservation of classical Chinese healing arts. Show Notes: 1:00 David's journey into martial arts and accupressure. 6:30 What led him to shift his martial arts focus to that of a healing art instead of a breaking art. 9:30 Selling everything that he owned to begin life as a monk in China. 12:00 Staying true to his principles when an unexpected request was made of him by his Masters. 15:00 Discovering the real reason behind his mom's chronic shoulder pain–it had to do with emotional pain instead of mechanical pain. 16:00 How his insight into healing being a matter of the heart impacted his clinical work. 17:45 To have a lasting impact on his students or patients, it's not going to be in his technique, but in the space that he holds. 18:45 Getting people to slow down their tempo and give up their frantic pace is what leads to lasting healing. 24:00 If you put your energy on fixing things, there will always be more and more to fix, but if you put your energy on celebrating things, there will always be more and more to celebrate. 27:00 He isn't treating people–it's through Tai Chi movements that his patients feel better, simply by sharing his space. 33:00 His daily routine encompasses a daily walk, cup of tea, gentle mobility, meditation and holding space for guests. 34:00 He prescribes the 3 M's to his patients–movement, massage and meditation. 37:30 His current mentor is his 7-month-old son. 42:35 Someone he would enjoy meeting in life is the patriarch of his lineage, Zhang San Feng, who is often thought of as the creator of Tai Chi. 45:00 Some history on his lineage and the direction he has taken it. 51:00 His experience with trying out Plum Dragon Dit Da Jow and discovering that its fluidness, which differs from the thicker salves that he is used to, is what helps it absorb into the skin so quickly. He also loves the aromatic smell of the herbs. 54:00 Why he doesn't believe Traditional Chinese Medicine is a real thing–everything from the fact that it's not truly “traditional,” it's not exclusively “Chinese” and it's more about “healing” than “medicine” (which has the connotation of fixing a finite problem). I continue with the theme of looking at the specific style of Zen Shiatsu. I try and give a comparison of some of the classical ideas and Masunaga's descriptions of how the organs are providing function in the body from the Chinese Medicine stand point.
I continue my look into Shizuto Masunaga's written works. I look at the healing process and the roles of practitioner and client with regards to healing and many other facets of the work.
In this episode I exclusively look at the books written by the founder of this style of Shiatsu, Shizuto Masunaga. I then try to share my understandings and experiences on what he may have been trying to share with us.

My interview with Gwyn Williams at Bali Spirit festival discussing the 3 Treasures. Greetings beloved rainbow warriors. I’m coming to you today from Goa india where I’ve been for a couple months now teaching and learning and teaching again. What a blessing to be here spending time in the nourishing sea Gwyn has been teaching his entire adult life. Earlier as a physical education teacher, martial arts instructor and later as a yoga teacher and Zenthai facilitator. His passion for alternative therapies and connecting his heart with his hands led to him teaching Zen Shiatsu at his created Mt. Ninderry Healing Centre in 1999. Since this initial class he has become a national and international teacher of his own form of bodywork/movement and awareness he calls Zenthai. I have to share from his website this explanation of what zenthai is to give you an understanding of who Gywn is. On Zenthai … ‘On the surface we may see a creative form of bodywork integrating techniques and philosophy from Zen Shiatsu, Thai massage and osteopathy. However, at its core is an invitation to freedom. Freedom not only of the structural and energetic bodies but also, if we are adventurous enough, also the mental and emotional. Experiencing true freedom is not about ‘taking on’ anything new but more-so about letting go of the traps and blockages within our body/mind that prevent us from experiencing our true nature – joyful and free. It becomes the focused intention for both giver and receiver using tools such as touch, breath, movement, awareness and honest self inquiry that is not confined to a yoga mat or futon but each moment of our daily life.’ I find Gwyn to be an experienced and passionate advocate and educator for wellness in both energy and form. He’s a bright light himself and I’m so proud to share this uplifting AND INFORMATION PACKED EPISODE WITH YOU. Today Gwyn walks us through what in Chinese medicine is known as the 3 treasures. This is really useful information to grasp and find ways to integrate into your daily life for better health and vitality. Gwyn does give some practical tips for cultivating and caring for your three treasures so make sure you have a notebook. Check out the show notes in itunes to get links to Gwyn’s website and schedule. Enjoy and namaste Gwyn's website http://zenthaishiatsu.com/
