Podcast: This week on the show we feature a pre-recorded conversation with Bob Noha, co-editor of and contributor to Aikido – The Art of Transformation: The Life & Teachings of Robert Nadeau, published recently by Park Street Press, a division of Inner Traditions. A widely influential figure in the development of Aikido in America, Robert Nadeau is known as one of the few American direct disciples of Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba O-sensei. Now an 8th dan Aikido master teacher, Nadeau has taught generations of students, and several have become prominent teachers in their own right. However, he has never written about his life or philosophy, always reserving his most pointed lessons for those who practice with him in person. This book tells the story of Robert Nadeau's life journey and his distinctive approach to teaching Aikido as a way to access the inner energetic aspects of the art, a transformational approach with universal applications in daily life, even for non-Aikidoists. The authors explore Nadeau's early interest in martial arts and all things spiritual as a teenager in California in the 1950s, his seminal training under Morihei Ueshiba at Aikido Hombu Dojo in Tokyo in the 1960s, and the following six decades of training, experimenting, refining, and teaching as he worked to introduce Aikido to the wider world, even beyond the traditional dojo. They lay out Nadeau's core concepts, describe his simple-but-effective practices for personal development, and convey his time-tested approach to the inner training at the heart of Aikido in a very accessible way. They also include first-person accounts from Nadeau's students, including Dan Millman, Richard Strozzi-Heckler, Peter Ralston, and Renée Gregorio, who recall their personal experiences of training with him, retell conversations with him, and describe insights and lessons learned, sharing how he affected their lives, sometimes quite profoundly. Bob Noha, 6th Dan, began practicing Aikido in 1966 in Mountain View and shortly thereafter began training with Robert Nadeau Sensei, which started a lifelong friendship. Bob opened the first Aikido school in the Washington, DC, area in 1970 and taught arrest/restraint tactics to US Military Police at Andrews Air Force Base in 1974. Then, in 1975, he established the first Aikido school in Buffalo, New York. He founded Aikido of Petaluma in 1983 and continues to serve as its chief instructor. Bob traveled to Japan to further deepen his Aikido training in 1998, 1999, and 2006. In addition, he is also a devoted student and teacher of t'ai chi and has a background in several other martial arts. « Combattre ! Vaincre ! Dominateur ! A quoi cela sert-il ? Gagner aujourd'hui signifie perdre demain ! As context for this conversation I recommend the following: Video on martial arts; Geoff's Ted Talk. Geoff Thompson is famous in the world of self defence. After becoming a highly ranked martial artist in numerous disciplines, Geoff became a nightclub bouncer in Coventry in the UK at a time when it was known as the most violent city in Europe. From this experience he went on to develop a form of martial arts based on real world situations that centred on the idea of efficacy, or to put it another way - hitting first. From this he became one of the world's leading self defence experts and got to a point where he was teaching Chuck Norris's students in the US. In this rather esoteric conversation Geoff discusses how he used methods from his martial arts training to develop himself spiritually and overcome the darkness within him. While beginning with spiritual martial arts teachers such as Gichin Funakosi and Morihei Ueshiba, Geoff's spiritual knowledge has come from places as diverse as George Gurdjieff, the Armenian born mystic, the Srimad Bhagavatam, one of the great Hindu Puranas, Roman Catholicism and Rumi. As you'll come to hear in our conversation, Geoff considers his time as a nightclub bouncer as being a true metaphysical experience. A list of Geoff's published works can be found on his Wikipedia page and his instagram is https://www.instagram.com/geoff_thompson_official/?hl=en If you want to get in touch, my email is jack@religionreconsidered.com Thank you for joining us and I hope you enjoy the podcast.
Who knew that Ki , as it is related to the Japanese martial art Aikido, would make into a Cider Chat! It all began when four words "Bravey, Wisdom, Love and Friendship" were spoken at New York Apple Camp in the summer of 2023. Apple Historian, author and well known apple dectective John Bunker was the key note speaker at camp who also happened to have a book all about Aikido. He had found those four inspiring words in a book titled "The Art of Peace'. The book was written by Morihei Ueshiba, the Founder of Aikido, and was translated into English by John Stevens who was a student of the Founder. The Founder , or Ōsensei as he was lovingly spoken often of Ki and its power. In short it is a universal life force that is present in all of us and all living things, including apple trees, orchards and cider. Developed in the 1920's by Morihei Ueshiba, affectionately known as O'Sensei, Aikido combined many threads of existing Japanese martial practices and created a novel and powerful tapestry of training. “To injure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace.”
Excerpt from Morihei Ueshiba's book, BUDO, on The Principle of Adjusting Mind and Body.
"The idea for this composition came to me quickly after listening to the field recording of a mountain stream, near Rifugio San Marco, in the Italian Dolomites for the first time. I immediately imagined a cascading stream on a sunny day, a clear blue sky and light reflecting off the surface of the water as it descended through nature, a song of hopeful potential. "Although this particular recording originated in Italy, I was reminded of one of my favorite quotes from Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of the Japanese martial art Aikido: “Do not fail to learn from the pure voice of an ever-flowing mountain stream splashing over the rocks,” and so I named this track Voce Pura. "The field recording, in varying forms, runs throughout the entire song like water winding through the Dolomite mountains. I chose keys that sounded crisp, sparkling and airy, yet flowed from one note to the next. At several points, a traditional drum kit is overlaid with two different drum machines as the music surges; and mixes with complimentary beats like water rolling over rocks one instance and suddenly levelling out, mingling in a shallow pool before flowing once again." Mountain stream at Rifugio San Marco, Dolomites reimagined by Point/Call.

In this episode I explore an idea of what it means to access ones spirit and to bring that into a healing context. This is an idea stated a couple times in the classical texts of Chinese medicine. In those works though there isn't much in the expression of how to do this. I was listening to someone read the book Art of Peace by Morihei Ueshiba. This is a book on the translated expressions of the founder of Aikido throughout his life time. As I was listening I realized a lot of the expression in this book spoke to me and this idea of accessing ones spirit within. What follows is my attempt to examine this work and compare it to the fundamental truths of life. As well as how these foundation truths reflect in the healing arts and shiatsu particularly. I am a firm believer that when we devote ourselves to a single path in life it can enlighten us to the truths that exist in all paths in life.

This week author and translator John Stevens joins us from Hawaii. Stevens has penned many books over his long career, mainly dealing with Japanese martial arts, poetry, and biography.“A book should be enlightening for the writer, and for the people reading it.” —John StevensAmy starts off the show mentioning the books of Stevens that she has read: The Marathon Monks of Mt. Hiei; The Essence of Aikido: Spiritual Teachings of Morihei Ueshiba; Dew Drops on a Lotus Leaf: Zen Poems of Ryokan; and Mountain Tasting: Haiku and Journals of Santoka Taneda. Yet that is only a fraction of the works that Stevens has produced over his life.He explains his translation style and how he manages to capture the essence of haiku in his translations. He names Arthur Waley as an exemplar of the craft.“A good translation has to be good literature, fine literature."Stevens talks about his first book, One Robe, One Bowl (Tuttle Publishing). His second book was Mountain Tasting: Haiku and Journals of Santoka Taneda (White Pine Press). Of his books on aikido, he says the most popular has been The Art of Peace: Teachings of the Founder of Aikido (Shambhala), which has over 2,300 ratings on Amazon and has been further translated into over 20 languages.Amy reads a poem from Dew Drops on a Lotus Leaf (Shambhala), which prompts Stevens to talk about his passion for poetry and translation:"If you don't feel the passion and the poignancy, then it's not a translation.”When talking about the writing process:"Writing a book should be enlightening, for both you writing it and for the people reading it," says Stevens. "My writing was an extension of my [Aikido] practice.”Other popular books by Stevens are The Essence of Aikido: Spiritual Teachings of Morihei Ueshiba (Kodansha International), and The Marathon Monks of Mt. Hiei (Echo Point Books & Media).Stevens tells a story of going to Sendai to meet a master Aikido teacher, Shirata-sensei, in Yamagata. "I'd arrive at the dojo, no one was there. He was there. He was never not there. And he was sitting, meditating. I learned something: that if you're a teacher, you've got to be there all the time.”The author and translator also talks about his book Lust for Enlightenment (Shambhala) and why it was controversial, as well as Tantra of Tachikawa Ryu: Secret Sex Teachings of the Buddha (Stone Bridge Press).More recently, Stevens has been working with art exhibitions and writing exhibition catalogues. He is currently working on a display in Spain centered around the Kyoto poet and Buddhist nun Rengetsu at the Gothic Monastery of Pedralbes in Barcelona until May 27, 2022. If you need a primer before you go, get a copy of Stevens's Rengetsu: Life & Poetry of Lotus Moon (Echo Point Books & Media). The Barcelona exhibit, which has been open to the public since November 2021 and is titled "La lluna de Lotus" in Spanish, includes 36 ceramic pieces and 30 paintings and calligraphy by the female artist. Lastly, Amy asks Stevens what his favorite books on Japan are:Poetry and Zen: Letters and Uncollected writings of R.H. Blyth by R.H. Blyth and Norman WaddellZen and Japanese Culture by Daisetzu T. Aikido and T`ai Chi Ch`uan are the pre-eminent soft martial art forms. Each is both shockingly efficient as a fighting art and remarkably healthy for the entire body. The football player started at the snap just as he'd been coached and drove forward with his powerful legs. His offensive counterpart also dug in deep lurching forward, his job was to overpower his defensive opponent, and block him from getting through the offensive line, and sacking the primary offensive keystone on his team, his quarterback. However, just as their powerful bodies met over the line of scrimmage the defensive player SYNCHRONIZED with the offensive player's powerful blocking push, and slipped past him easily. Within 3 seconds the whistle was blown, and the offensive lineman's quarterback was gasping for air from the hard tackle his defensive counterpart had inflicted on him. A large smile beamed from the defensive lineman as he past, not so much in gloating as in saying, “No hard feelings… and I've got a secret… His secret was his long hours of practice at a local dojang (Korean for dojo), and practicing SYNCHRONIZING techniques he'd learned in his Hapkido class. His instructor had taught him that to push against force was fighting, and the fight not only wastes time, and energy, it's not as effective as SYNCHRONIZING. So when the ball was snapped, his main objective was not to fight, and dig his feet in, going muscle and bone against muscle and bone. His objective was instead was to “be the empty jacket.” A term and technique taught by Aikido's founder Morihei Ueshiba. By “being the empty jacket,”and SYNCHRONIZING, all his opponent's power was rendered useless. All his long hours of pushing, blocking and going toe to toe were at once neutralized through SYNCHRONIZATION. How often in life do we believe we must go toe to toe, overpower and crush our opponent? How well does better, faster, stronger actually work? And what happens when we are completely confronted with an obstacle too powerful, too fast and too overwhelming to overcome? We get crushed, we loose energy, and possibly lose the battle. Because there is always someone better, faster, or stronger. What if however, you didn't need to be better, faster or stronger? What if you could be the proverbial “empty jacket,” and allow your opponent to pass by you unharmed, and in fact leaving you in a better strategic position? For those of you who love to waste energy and effort to prove you are in fact better, faster or stronger…keep training, for someday you will find yourself out matched, and laying on the ground, blurry eyed, and unconscious.. For the rest of us…”Be the empty jacket!” and SYNCHRONIZE power, not just with people you agree with, also SYNCHRONIZE power with people that oppose you directly, and you will most likely win. SYNCHRONIZE power! Allen Hughes Warrior Way Life Defense #lifedefense #synchronize #allenhughes. Photo by football wife from Pexels --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/allen-hughes/message

Sharon has found herself training under some remarkable masters throughout her life. From direct students of Ōsensei: Nakazono Sensei, Sugano Sensei, and Yamata Sensei to name a few. Sharon teaches Aikido at NY Aikikai under Yamata Sensei. Yamata Sensei studied as a live in student directly under the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba - Ōsensei. It doens't get richer than that. Aikido is a defensive martial art that teaches us how to diffuse a situation with minimal harm caused. Ōsensei is quoted saying, To injure an opponent is to injure yourself. To control aggression without inflicting injury is the Art of Peace. This sentiment accurately sums up how Aikido is a meditation or even therapy for all areas of life. I've had the privilege of practicing with Sharon and can only say that she is fierce, deeply connected to greater spirit, and an absolute blast to be around. Sharon is the US Rep for the International Aikido Federation's Working Group on Gender. Sharon is also a healer practicing many modalities including Kototama. Don't worry if you haven't heard of it, I hadn't either but have fallen in love with the practice. Kototama uses ancient sacred sounds to affect dis-ease in the body, mind, and spirit. This Japanese practice believes that mystical powers dwell in words and names.
ALLOW Powerfully! ALLOW is by default a type of permission. In self-defense ALLOW has a physical aspect of ALLOWING an attackers energy to continue, without impeding. This simple non-resistance may prove to overextend an attack and create an off-balancing effect as in a push, or painful consequence as in ALLOWING in response to a tackle, slamming the attacker to the ground face first. Today in our discussion of Life Defense we will examine how the PRINCIPLE of ALLOWING is a powerful choice in both deed and discussion. Let's look... What actually happens when a person, with differing opinions is freely ALLOWED to voice them unrestrained, and offered no resistance? In a seemingly endless tirade, the angry, accusatory, even violent tones and volumes may eventually soften, spoken to a confident, listening ear, reason begins to turn as no commentary of resistance is present. Perhaps your own opposing view point might begin to emerge spoken from their own lips, as the aggressor offers supposed counter points when none are offered. Eventually, they may either walk off in feigned disgust, or begin to quiet, and even ask your thoughts. You see ALLOWING is just that, ALLOWING an attacker's energy to do all the work. Without resistance, aggression tends to eventually fall on its face, as long as ALLOWING is accomplished in the powerful silence of listening as an opening. This is contrary to non-response which may seem passively aggressive. Remember, just because someone is attacking doesn't mean anything is required until it is required. The PRINCIPLE here is that ALLOWING dissipates energy, and ALLOWING what needs to be said, said. It is when people do not feel heard that situations escalate. Morihei Ueshiba was known as the master of the “empty jacket.” ALLOWING is like that. Someone pulls and pushes and the empty jacket ALLOWS the defender to succeed through non-resistance. We must note that in some cases mobs support an attack offering echoed counterpoint as an accelerated frenzy to act, emboldened by their own chants and purposeful agenda. Mob scenarios therefore require an alternate solution and the defender must adapt. However, by nature a single angry individual needs resistance to justify continuation of forward motion. Resistance breeds more aggression while ALLOWING not running, becomes a powerful force for transformation! In life look at what you might ALLOW today, and powerfully, actively, quietly observe the outcome offering no resistance until powerful action is required. ALLOW. Fawn and Matt discuss the philosophy of Aikido (the Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba that operates using the art of peace). They describe the one purpose, which is to better the lives of people, especially those who attack you physically and emotionally and being able to bring harmony to each situation (as your job is to protect your attacker: "If your opponent strikes with fire, counter with water, becoming completely fluid and free-flowing. Water by its nature, never collides with or breaks against anything. On the contrary, it swallows up any attack harmlessly." - Morihei Ueshiba (translated by John Stevens) This episode further explores our interactions with one another at the office and in our personal lives and is about applying the Art of Peace to the Art of Friendship.

¡cualquier cosa!
