It might be a little faux pas to discuss money, but let’s face it, unless you’re in the wedding industry or you’ve planned a wedding before, knowing who and how much to tip is a big unknown. Most couples don’t want to offend their vendors, but they also aren’t comfortable asking about it, so today I’m tackling the question head on! These tips are based on what I’ve seen most over my last 5 years in the industry. I understand every couple’s budget differs, so I’m giving you common tipping ranges and alternatives to monetary tips that could fit any budget. Remember, tips aren’t required but they’re appreciated, and at the end of the day, it’s all about saying thank you to your vendors, which you can do in a lot of different ways! How To Clean Up At The End Of Your Wedding Day

Wedding day set up and clean up is like biking up a hill. Set up is the slow climb to the top, taking lots of effort to perfect every detail. Clean up is the exact opposite. It’s fast and things are moving quickly to get you to the bottom of the hill (or out of your venue on time) in the most efficient way possible. While clean up isn’t the most fun thing to think about during wedding planning, it is a critical piece of the big day that you absolutely need to think about before the music is off, the lights are on, and you have to get everyone and everything out of the venue. Here are my 7 tips to help you develop a clean up plan and ensure that it runs smoothly on your wedding day. You probably know your exact wedding day vision. From the décor you’ve collected to the rentals you’ve reserved, and how it’ll all come together. But, have you written it down? Having a clear wedding day set-up plan is one of the most critical pieces to ensuring your wedding day vision comes to life exactly how it looks in your mind, without a single piece or detail being forgotten or out of place. Even for couples with a more fluid vision, your set up plan is still a great way to organize where items are coming from, how they’re getting to and from the venue, and will make it easier to hand off set up to someone else while you’re getting ready and taking pictures. Host A Rehearsal Dinner That Aligns With Your Style

Today, I’m talking about my own wedding with my husband Eli. Our anniversary is in just a few days on June 16th. We actually got married on 6/16/16 and this is the 16th episode, which was by total coincidence! We had a really small wedding with about 45 guests on a small island north of Seattle called Camano Island. While we didn’t have any huge mistakes, there were definitely a few small hiccups, like forgetting decorations, distributing sheets and blankets to guests as they arrived, and we talk openly about things we would have done differently, like choosing a different location and style for the rehearsal dinner. Just as a heads up, this is a very laidback conversation, which you’ll understand after you listen to the opening clip. It’s also the first time I’ve done an in-person recording, since most are done virtually, and unfortunately I ran into a major issue with my microphone, so the quality tappers off near the end, but Eli’s mic is still going strong. The advice was too good not to include, but I apologize in advance if it’s a little hard to hear. Sign up for our weekly podcast newsletter with bonus wedding planning tips from our featured couples. Today I’m chatting with Kirsten and Kris, and I was lucky enough to be their coordinator for their backyard wedding on Bainbridge Island in 2017. They reached out to me to be on the podcast and let me know a whole lot of family drama that was going on behind the scenes during their wedding planning that I didn’t even know was happening. They'll get into the details during the episode, but essentially they had 3 sets of parents, some of them hadn’t spoken for decades, and the wedding was being hosted at one of the parent’s homes. How do you make sure they all behave? Well, you sit them down before the wedding and make them work it out. Talking openly about family dynamics isn’t easy, but these two really handled the situation perfectly and it’s amazing advice for anyone cringing by the thought of how their family might interact on their wedding day. Today is part two of my interview with Michel. She was such a joy to chat with and I know you’re going to get a kick out of her story today. Near the end of last week’s episode, Michel shared that she has celiac disease, and briefly touched on her experience booking a caterer that could accommodate her dietary restrictions. Well, today we’re chatting about her cake and the semi-disastrous experience that almost turned catastrophic as soon as she took a bite during the cake cutting. Luckily, everything was ok, but because of her experience, she does have some very tangible advice for all couples in their search for a cake vendor. In this episode she also shares why the middle part of planning was the hardest for her, and the one thing she recommends all couples plan into their wedding timeline. Today I’m chatting with Nicki from Nicki Kay Creative. I got in touch with Nicki after she wrote in a post on Instagram about how she wished she just would have gone downstairs to check on things before the wedding ceremony, rather than staying cooped up in the bridal suite the whole time feeling anxious. It got me thinking, because the tradition of no one seeing the bride while she’s getting ready is still followed by many couples, even as first looks have become more popular. What is it about this tradition that’s perpetuated for so long, and why don’t more brides just do what would make them feel most at ease on their wedding day, even if that means a few people see them before their hair and make-up is finished? Today I’m continuing my conversation with Kaylee. Last week was part 1 of her wedding story where she shared the experience of booking a venue that wasn’t even built yet. And while some would think that was her wedding mistake, you’d be wrong! Today we talk about another vendor, her rental company, and the nightmare experience they had, starting with them not showing up on time for the delivery and ending with a settlement in court. Kaylee and Chris went through the ringer, but what I love is how in the midst of it all Kaylee took a moment to be upset (rightfully so), followed by a deep breath, and then moved on. It’s an unfortunate thing that happened to them, but she’s happy to share about it because she wants other couples to do their due diligence up front and avoid a similar situation with any vendor. Last week, they talked about choosing a wedding venue on the opposite side of the country from their family and friends, and this week, they share the pros and cons of having a long engagement. Today I’m chatting with Kalei. We worked together at the University of Washington Admissions Office about 5 years ago. It’s a friendship that was forged over many long hours in the office and many fun happy hours afterwards. She was a guest at my wedding in 2016 and I attended her wedding the next year in 2017. I feel so fortunate to have her as a friend and that she was willing to come on the podcast and share her and Tristan’s wedding planning story because it’s honestly not an easy one to discuss. About 2.5 months before their wedding they received news that Tristan’s dad was diagnosed with cancer, and just 3 weeks later he passed away. During this time, I remember talking with her about the wedding and how hard it was to balance the range of emotions they felt on a daily basis, and how difficult it was deciding how to incorporate something so heartbreaking into their wedding day in a meaningful way, without it casting a shadow over their celebration. Like I said, this isn’t an easy topic to discuss, but Kalei does it was so much grace and wisdom. She articulates what it was like balancing happy and sad emotions, the understanding her and Tristan needed to have to prioritize wedding planning during this trying time, and how they decided to honor his father on the wedding day in a way that felt right for them. For anyone going through the loss of a loved one, or wanting to honor someone that’s no longer with us on their wedding day, take comfort in knowing you’re not alone. It’s one of the many reasons Kalei wanted to share their story, so other couples would feel less alone and confused about how to proceed with wedding planning after the loss of loved one. Her advice is sweet and light-hearted for such a heavy topic, and I feel honored that we can shed some light on this topic on the podcast.
