Using AI for Climate Risk Assessment, with Dr. Ron Dembo

ClimateBreak

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 9, 2025 1:45

Assessing Climate RisksAs climate change accelerates, climate risks are beginning to impact every aspect of society from infrastructure and transportation to health, biodiversity, and air and water quality. A climate risk is the potential for climate change to have adverse consequences for a human or ecological system. Climate risks have implications for property and infrastructure, posing a threat to the global financial system at large. The rate at which climate change and its associated risks are increasing can be reduced through mitigation and adaptation actions such as investing in green infrastructure and implementing energy efficiency standards. The assessment of climate risk involves the identification and quantification of the potential impacts of climate change on an organization, region, or community. Many organizations utilize climate risk assessments, which involve evaluating current and future vulnerabilities to climate-related hazards, taking into account factors such as infrastructure resilience, economic stability, and social vulnerability. To quantify those impacts, assessments typically estimate the level of damage in financial terms. In order to streamline this process and make it easier for companies to identify their potential risk, riskthinking.AI has developed a platform to leverage climate change risks and impacts through AI software.Integrating AI technology into climate risk assessmentsRiskthinking.Ai integrates AI technology with climate change data to evaluate financial risk management through their development of the ClimateEarthDigitalTwin (CDT). The CDT integrates physical asset data with the latest climate projections like extreme weather and temperature shifts. Rather than using deterministic forecasts, CDT relies on probabilistic distributions to simulate a range of future scenarios and project changes in an asset's value over time. The CDT platform quantifies exposure and impacts from climate change. Riskthinking.Ai identifies which specific risk factors, such as extreme heat and floods, contribute to overall exposure. This approach can guide decision-making and help assess the complex risks posed by climate change and inform future infrastructure investments, risk mitigation, and climate adaptation strategies.Upsides to AI assessment Riskthinking.Ai enables organizations to evaluate future financial impacts of climate change, integrating climate risks into business decisions. Countries especially vulnerable to climate change may benefit from this algorithm, as it allows for a better understanding of the threats they face due to a changing climate. By providing countries, governments, and corporations with a better understanding of how they may be at risk due to their geographical location and respective climate vulnerability, AI technology can guide decision-making to inform proper adaptation and mitigation into the future. Downsides to AI assessment Although Riskthinking.Ai provides a tangible strategy in informing proper adaptation and mitigation, many argue that the use of AI technology to address environmental crises is counterintuitive due to AI's negative impacts on the environment. By 2040, it is predicted that the emissions from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry will amount to 14% of global emissions, with the majority being driven through ICT infrastructure, specifically data centers and communication networks which AI relies upon to operate. In addition to the significant energy consumption required to power AI technology, a large amount of water is needed for cooling data centers. Further, AI relies on critical minerals and rare elements which are mined for unsustainability and the rapidly increasing data centers contribute to the growing body of electronic waste. However, as AI becomes increasingly applied to environmental problems, it can prove to be a valuable tool in combating climate change. Thus, working to reduce the environmental impact of AI technology will not only be vital in its application for climate risk assessments, but in mitigating the harmful effects brought about by its rapidly increasing societal demand.About our GuestDr. Ron Dembo, founder and CEO of Riskthinking.Ai, has utilized his multi-factor scenario modeling expertise to create a data platform and analytics engine for measuring and managing climate financial risk. (2:00) Early nutrition guidelines were established by Seventh-day Adventists to eliminate the eating of meat. The facts are lined up and vetted in FAT: a documentary. (6:30) Vinnie curates knowledge of other experts on his show. (11:30) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has caused some disruption to the messaging; however, as long as Big Pharma and Big Food are allowed to lobby, there won't likely be much change. Lobbying affects both sides of the aisle, and changes have not been made. (18:00) It's part of what has been driving the decrease in metabolic health of our society. (20:00) Being a registered dietician is a challenge; positions in hospitals and schools pay less than half of what Big Food will pay. (22:00) Vinnie shares the story (and misconception) behind “fat burns in the flames of carbohydrates.” (28:00) Michelle shares her story of how she discovered what she had learned was wrong. (34:00) Her health had deteriorated, and she became very ill. It was when she learned about low-carb that she regained her health. Vinnie shares how he figured out how to fuel himself with fat for his ultra races. (40:00) Michelle is a marathon runner and made discoveries of her own, including high-fat/low-carb to fuel her body. (45:00) The Downsides of Shortcuts GLP-1s are all the rage, but nothing in biochemistry is free of consequences. (51:00) You can't affect any one issue in isolation. There are downsides to shortcuts. The side effects are a serious concern. Suppressing ghrelin can suppress hunger, but that means it also suppresses autophagy, which is your body's way of cleaning toxins from its cells. (52:00) They discuss other implications associated with GLP-1s, like loss of muscle tissue. Michelle and Vinnie have both helped numerous people just through the low-carb lifestyle approach alone. Chuck Todd begins with how Trump continues to damage himself with tone-deaf comments about Jeffrey Epstein that reveal his complete lack of empathy for victims, viewing himself rather than trafficking survivors as the real victim in the scandal. He argues that if Trump truly wants to move past the Epstein controversy, he should pivot to something that could actually win him praise—intervening in Gaza to provide humanitarian aid, which could even earn him the Nobel Peace Prize he desperately wants while addressing voter discomfort with Israel's actions. He also explores emerging Democratic Party fractures over police funding that hint at presidential ambitions from figures like Cory Booker, Trump's concerning signals about abandoning Taiwan, and the troubling spectacle of MAGA influencers like Dan Bongino backtracking on Epstein file demands with McCarthy-esque conspiracy theories.Progressive media entrepreneur Tara McGowan joins Chuck to discuss her journey from Democratic operative to founder of Courier Newsroom, a values-driven journalism platform that openly rejects traditional notions of journalistic neutrality. McGowan argues that independent journalism freed from corporate ownership constraints can better serve democracy by being "offensively oriented" with good information rather than defensively trying to appear neutral while misinformation spreads unchecked. She traces how American media has returned to its openly partisan 19th-century roots after a brief mid-20th-century experiment with objectivity, explaining why Courier embraces progressive values while maintaining journalistic integrity and how the conservative media machine that emerged after Watergate has successfully won the information war by understanding that politics and media have always been intertwined. The conversation explores the structural challenges facing modern media, from the collapse of the newspaper "bundle" that once accidentally informed audiences to the dominance of big tech algorithms that can make or break media companies overnight. McGowan discusses why individual personalities now earn trust better than institutional brands, how right-wing podcasts excel at moving audiences while building relationships with them, and why Democrats lost their early dominance in new media due to a consultant culture that stifled adaptation to the modern media ecosystem. She argues that the future belongs to younger Democratic talent who are native to digital platforms and compares today's media landscape to the muckraking era of the early 20th century, while addressing how Trump's Epstein controversy represents more than just algorithmic manipulation and reflects his broader pattern of covering up damaging information. Finally, he answers listeners' questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment!Timeline:(Timestamps may vary based on advertisements)00:00 Chuck Todd's introduction03:30 Trump keeps digging his own grave when talking about Epstein04:30 Trump's “poaching employees” comment shows no empathy for victims07:15 Trump underestimates the passion in his base for Epstein victims09:15 Trump doesn't see the victims, he sees himself as a victim10:15 If Trump wants to turn the page, he needs to intervene in Gaza* 12:45 Feeding Gaza could win Trump the Nobel peace prize he covets15:15 Voters on both sides are uncomfortable with what Israel is doing17:45 It would be in Trump's, Israel's, and America's interest to intervene in Gaza19:00 Democratic party infighting breaks out over bill for police funding21:15 Cory Booker is showing his presidential ambitions 23:15 Elected Democrats haven't figured out how to challenge Trump26:00 Foreshadowing for Democrats internal civil war?28:15 Trump only governs for his supporters, Democrats can't do the same30:15 The most talented politicians serve all voters and their base simultaneously31:00 Trump denies Taiwanese president visit to New York32:00 Trump sends message he wouldn't intervene on behalf of Taiwan33:15 MAGA influencers are backtracking on Epstein files34:15 Dan Bongino puts out McCarthy-esque tweet over files36:00 Bongino says he found something “shocking”, but can't say what it is?38:30 Bongino is terrified his audience will think he's a turncoat41:00 Bongino is doing terrible damage to the rule of law42:00 Tara McGowan joins the Chuck ToddCast! 43:30 Tara's political origin story 46:00 Founding Courier Newsroom 46:45 Why lean against journalistic neutrality? 47:45 Independent journalism isn't beholden to corporate owners 50:00 Courier isn't partisan, but has values they won't compromise 51:15 Media was openly partisan in the 19th century, becoming so again 52:30 Do you worry about reporting being tainted by bias? 53:45 The antidote to misinformation is offensively oriented good information 55:15 Media is currently operating out of fear and favor under Trump 57:30 The newspaper used to be a bundle that accidentally informed people 59:15 Watergate created the modern conservative media machine 1:00:30 What does the right wing media do well that you want to emulate? 1:01:45 The right understands the importance of winning the information war 1:03:45 There's always been a convergence of politics and media 1:05:15 Media companies get put into a "box" based on their perceived leanings 1:06:15 Right wing podcasts are moving their audiences and moving with them 1:07:00 Do you struggle finding conservative voices to platform? 1:08:30 Individual personalities earn trust better than brands 1:09:30 Downsides to the influencer media model? 1:12:30 There's value in aggregating good journalism 1:13:15 All the persuasion will be targeted at millennials 1:14:00 Distribution of media is at the mercy of big tech algorithms 1:15:30 Epstein isn't purely an algorithm creation, Trump is covering up something 1:18:30 Young people don't trust either party but really don't like Trump 1:19:30 Facebook changed algorithm and decimated Daily Caller and Buzzfeed 1:21:00 MAGA doesn't like consolidated power, and big tech has amassed it 1:23:00 How to adjust strategy when the algorithm changes 1:25:30 How did Democrats go from dominating new media to losing it? 1:28:30 Democrats' consultant culture strangled adaptation 1:30:00 The younger Democrat talent is native to the modern media ecosystem 1:32:00 Modern media is looking like the muckrakers of the early 20th century1:32:30 Chuck's thoughts on interview with Tara McGowan 1:34:00 Ask Chuck 1:34:15 What to make of Trump denying disaster aid to blue states? 1:38:30 How should the Democrats schedule their primary calendar? 1:44:00 Miami vs UF football + Pro wrestling 1:46:00 Can Democrats be competitive in Ohio in 26' and 28'?

In this week's episode of America on the Road, Jack Nerad and Chris Teague each test drive fascinating small cars — the 2025 Volvo EX30 and the 2025 Hyundai Kona. Depending upon how you look at it, each one could be considered a big bargain … or a disappointment. We'll tell you our opinions and break down the biggest auto industry news of the week. Let's dive into what's on tap: Road Test 1: 2025 Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance Ultra Host Jack Nerad puts the 2025 Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance Ultra to the test, a compact electric SUV that delivers sports-car acceleration—0 to 60 in just 3.3 seconds—while wrapped in sleek, minimalist design. Its dual-motor AWD setup generates 422 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, with up to 253 miles of range. Tech takes center stage inside with a single 12.3-inch touchscreen that controls everything—no gauge cluster or physical buttons in sight. While fast and feature-rich, Jack notes the interface can feel unintuitive, and the lack of tactile controls may frustrate some drivers. Sustainable materials, 5G connectivity, Google Built-in, and standard driver-assist features give it a modern edge. However, with final assembly and sourcing in China, the EX30 won't qualify for U.S. EV tax credits. It's a compelling, tech-forward EV for early adopters, but traditionalists may find it too digitally driven for daily use. Road Test 2: 2025 Hyundai Kona Chris Teague reviews the redesigned 2025 Hyundai Kona, now larger, smarter, and more refined than ever. The new model rides on an updated platform that improves ride quality, interior space, and driving dynamics. Its bold exterior features futuristic light bars and sharper lines, while the interior offers dual 12.3-inch displays, upgraded materials, and improved tech across trims. Powertrain options include a 2.0L base engine and a punchier 1.6-liter turbo, both delivering solid fuel economy. Chris highlights the Kona's strong value, easy drivability, and appeal to urban drivers and small families. Wireless smartphone connectivity and over-the-air update capability enhance its appeal. Downsides include some budget interior materials and AWD availability limited to certain trims. Overall, the 2025 Kona blends style, practicality, and features in a way that makes it one of the top choices in the subcompact SUV segment. Guest Interview: Jonny Grunwald, Pennzoil Spokesperson & Custom Car Builder This week's guest is Jonny Grunwald, a Pennzoil ambassador and respected automotive builder with a deep love for performance tuning and wrenching on machines. Jack and Chris talk with him about his path in the industry, his latest projects, and what he sees ahead for car enthusiasts and garage tinkerers alike. Industry News Roundup: Tesla Turmoil: Executives Exit Amid Falling Sales Tesla is in disarray as a string of high-profile executives has exited, including North American sales chief Troy Jones and key figures close to Elon Musk. With deliveries dropping and Musk's political foray stirring backlash, the company's direction—and stability—are being questioned. Stellantis Abandons Hydrogen Bet Stellantis is walking away from Symbio, its hydrogen fuel cell venture, just two years after buying in. Despite hydrogen's long-haul benefits, Stellantis is redirecting funds toward battery-electric vehicles, leaving Symbio's future in limbo. GM Flips Orion Plant from EVs to Gas Trucks In a surprising pivot, GM will convert its Orion Assembly plant from EV production to building gas-powered pickups like the Escalade, Silverado, and Sierra by 2027. Citing sluggish EV demand, the automaker is leaning back into its internal-combustion cash cows while maintaining battery module production on-site. Made in America Tour Update Jack shares the latest from the “Made in America” tour, highlighting domestic manufacturing, American-made vehicles, and other American-made items, including rock'n'roll, baseball, and football.

In this episode of Retire with Style, Alex Murguia and Wade Pfau explore Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) and their role in retirement planning. They cover the history of TIPS, their tax implications, and how they help protect against inflation. The conversation also addresses the drawbacks of TIPS, current market conditions, and the importance of clear communication- especially for couples where one partner is less engaged in financial matters.   Takeaways TIPS were introduced in 1997 to protect against inflation. TIPS provide a real rate of return that adjusts with inflation. Tax implications of TIPS make them less efficient than other investments. It's important to consider the inflation protection TIPS offer in retirement planning. Market timing is not a sound strategy for investing in TIPS. Communicating financial plans should focus on meaning rather than just numbers. Delaying Social Security can provide inflation-adjusted income. Laddering SPIAs can be an effective strategy for income planning. Understanding your spouse's values can enhance financial discussions.
