We take a deep dive into Amazon S3 Files, AWS's exciting new managed file system backed by S3! We kick things off by exploring why S3 isn't a traditional file system, covering everything from the lack of true directories and atomic renames to immutable objects and POSIX access control differences. We then walk through the existing solutions people have used to bridge that gap, like S3FS FUSE, MountPoint for S3, FSx for Lustre, and Storage Gateway. From there, we get into the heart of the episode: how S3 Files works, how to set it up, and how it uses EFS under the hood as a caching layer. We share our own real-world benchmarking results comparing S3 Files against various EFS configurations across Lambda and Fargate, and we discuss a real customer project where we put S3 Files to the test. We also cover the important caveats like eventual consistency, the 60-second write-back delay, the lack of cross-account bucket support, and the cost model so you can make an informed decision.Resources mentionedEpisode 124: S3 PerformanceEpisode 95: Mounting S3 as a FilesystemAmazon S3 FAQs: S3 FilesfourTheorem S3 Files demo code on GitHubAmazon documentation: Understanding how synchronization worksSponsor Thanks to fourTheorem for powering AWS Bites. This is the 4th installment where my co-host, Touseef Mirza, openly shares her personal menopause journey on HRT (hormone replacement therapy). In this episode, Touseef talks about unexpected side effects she encountered while on HRT, which then prompted some trials and tribulations. We cover bleeding episodes, blood tests, ultrasound, hormone dosing, etc. When it comes to HRT, we have a tendency to talk about the positives - of which there are many - but it is also important to recognize that there can be some unwanted effects too. By seeing the full picture of HRT, you will be better equipped to understand what is happening and make more informed decisions about your health. I am joined with my co-host and good friend, Touseef Mirza. Here are the previous installments of Touseef on HRT: #43: My experience on HRT with Touseef Mirza #28: Reading my labs for HRT with Touseef Mirza #12: Should I go on HRT? with Touseef Mirza

Eric Ries is the author of The Lean Startup, a book that reshaped how a generation of founders think about building companies. His new book, Incorruptible, explains how successful companies are destroyed by failing to protect what makes them valuable, and how to change it.In our in-depth conversation, we discuss:1. Why 80% of venture-backed founders are ousted within three years of going public2. The governance structures that protect companies like Anthropic, Costco, and Novo Nordisk3. The simple legal filing that takes two pages and could save your company4. Financial gravity: why successful companies predictably get corrupted into mediocrity5. Why mission-aligned companies like Anthropic reap major benefits from protecting their mission through governance6. Casual sex gets a bad reputation — but most of that reputation comes from doing it wrong. When it's rushed, unspoken, or emotionally misaligned, it can leave you feeling used, confused, or chasing someone who was never on the same page. But when you approach it with self-awareness and a willingness to actually say what you want, it can be exactly what you need. In this episode, I'm breaking down what conscious casual sex actually looks like — the different forms it can take, how to know if it's right for you right now, and the two things that separate a genuinely satisfying hookup from one that sends you into a shame spiral. In this episode, you'll learn: • The real difference between casual sex and hookup culture — and why "casual" doesn't have to mean disposable, careless, or emotionally disconnected • How to know if casual sex is actually a good fit for you right now, including the one attachment pattern that almost always makes it backfire • What to say before, during, and after a casual encounter to make sure your needs actually get met — and how to navigate hooking up within a friend group without blowing everything up More Dr. Emily: • Shop With Emily! This episode discusses the potential drawbacks of telehealth jobs for dietitians, emphasizing that feeling boxed in or less confident isn't burnout or a bad career choice. Instead, it often results from the role's design prioritizing efficiency over clinical leadership. The speaker offers three strategies for dietitians to assess their roles: checking for autonomy in decision-making, measuring skill growth, and monitoring confidence levels. The aim is to ensure the role not only provides convenience but also supports professional growth and confidence.
I've got three spots left open for spring black bear hunts in BC and two spots left for archery mule deer in Alberta. For any outfitting info, email me jay@mindfulhunter.com I avoided the Mountain Stick 4.1 from MTN Gear for years because I assumed it was just a trekking pole with an ice axe head. I was wrong. After putting it through the ultimate test on a mountain goat hunt in brutal terrain, I can confidently say this tool is in a league of its own. In this review, I cover: • Why my first impressions were dead wrong • How the Mountain Stick performs in real-world backcountry hunting conditions • Features like the carbide tip, pommel grip, climbing hooks, digging ability, rifle mount, and saw attachment • Pros, cons, and whether it's worth the $300 price tag If you're a mountain hunter, backcountry hiker, or gear junkie wondering if the Mountain Stick 4.1 is hype or a legit game changer, this deep dive is for you.
The guys dedicated the first hour to a conversation regarding the lack of cons to the Tigers' signing of Justin Verlander, both for nostalgic and on-the-field purposes. Then, they debated if each NFL team posed by Rico's window is opening or closing on an "In Football Today".

Episode 154 of the Award Travel 101 podcast features Angie Sparks and moderator Anthony Cave, recorded early due to scheduling, with a lighter news slate and no new card bonuses or trip updates from Angie. The highlight of the week was a reflective community post where members shared their best award travel experiences of 2025, ranging from aspirational first-class flights like Swiss, Emirates, and Singapore Suites to more personal moments such as traveling with loved ones or beginning retirement abroad. In news, the hosts discussed Bilt's new real-time award flight search tool, rumors around a possible “Bilt 2.0” card with mortgage-earning potential, JetBlue's still-active ultra-low 800-point award flights, improving Alaska partner earning rates in 2026, and a Marriott-to-Singapore Airlines status pathway.Anthony shared that while he hasn't picked up new bonuses, he's been maximizing Amex credits and is planning a big winter trip to either Europe or Asia, along with booking some comped cruises. The main topic of the episode was a deep dive into the Choice Privileges rewards program, including the newly introduced Titanium status tier. Key elite benefits include free breakfast at former Radisson properties for Diamond members, a new Titanium award, and the standout perk of being able to book suites for the same number of points as standard rooms. Downsides include resort fees on award stays and inconsistent late checkout. The hosts outlined how Choice status is relatively easy to earn through its two credit cards, which provide automatic status, elite night credits, and strong earning categories. They also highlighted valuable redemption sweet spots—such as hotels in Prague, Vienna, Tokyo, and Auckland for surprisingly low point totals—and favorable transfer ratios from major bank programs. The episode wrapped up with a reminder that Marriott PointSavers awards can only be searched on desktop, making it a useful but often overlooked tool.Episode Links:Bilt Search ToolAlaska Atmos Increased EarningJetBlue 800 point FlightsSingapore Status MatchWhere to Find Us The Award Travel 101 Facebook Community. Downsides to Probates That Take a Long Time
Assessing Climate RisksAs climate change accelerates, climate risks are beginning to impact every aspect of society from infrastructure and transportation to health, biodiversity, and air and water quality. A climate risk is the potential for climate change to have adverse consequences for a human or ecological system. Climate risks have implications for property and infrastructure, posing a threat to the global financial system at large. The rate at which climate change and its associated risks are increasing can be reduced through mitigation and adaptation actions such as investing in green infrastructure and implementing energy efficiency standards. The assessment of climate risk involves the identification and quantification of the potential impacts of climate change on an organization, region, or community. Many organizations utilize climate risk assessments, which involve evaluating current and future vulnerabilities to climate-related hazards, taking into account factors such as infrastructure resilience, economic stability, and social vulnerability. To quantify those impacts, assessments typically estimate the level of damage in financial terms. In order to streamline this process and make it easier for companies to identify their potential risk, riskthinking.AI has developed a platform to leverage climate change risks and impacts through AI software.Integrating AI technology into climate risk assessmentsRiskthinking.Ai integrates AI technology with climate change data to evaluate financial risk management through their development of the ClimateEarthDigitalTwin (CDT). The CDT integrates physical asset data with the latest climate projections like extreme weather and temperature shifts. Rather than using deterministic forecasts, CDT relies on probabilistic distributions to simulate a range of future scenarios and project changes in an asset's value over time. The CDT platform quantifies exposure and impacts from climate change. Riskthinking.Ai identifies which specific risk factors, such as extreme heat and floods, contribute to overall exposure. This approach can guide decision-making and help assess the complex risks posed by climate change and inform future infrastructure investments, risk mitigation, and climate adaptation strategies.Upsides to AI assessment Riskthinking.Ai enables organizations to evaluate future financial impacts of climate change, integrating climate risks into business decisions. Countries especially vulnerable to climate change may benefit from this algorithm, as it allows for a better understanding of the threats they face due to a changing climate. By providing countries, governments, and corporations with a better understanding of how they may be at risk due to their geographical location and respective climate vulnerability, AI technology can guide decision-making to inform proper adaptation and mitigation into the future. Downsides to AI assessment Although Riskthinking.Ai provides a tangible strategy in informing proper adaptation and mitigation, many argue that the use of AI technology to address environmental crises is counterintuitive due to AI's negative impacts on the environment. By 2040, it is predicted that the emissions from the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry will amount to 14% of global emissions, with the majority being driven through ICT infrastructure, specifically data centers and communication networks which AI relies upon to operate. In addition to the significant energy consumption required to power AI technology, a large amount of water is needed for cooling data centers. Further, AI relies on critical minerals and rare elements which are mined for unsustainability and the rapidly increasing data centers contribute to the growing body of electronic waste. However, as AI becomes increasingly applied to environmental problems, it can prove to be a valuable tool in combating climate change. Thus, working to reduce the environmental impact of AI technology will not only be vital in its application for climate risk assessments, but in mitigating the harmful effects brought about by its rapidly increasing societal demand.About our GuestDr. Ron Dembo, founder and CEO of Riskthinking.Ai, has utilized his multi-factor scenario modeling expertise to create a data platform and analytics engine for measuring and managing climate financial risk. Well the HT Guys have done the homework for you. We breakout our picks in the following three categories: Home Theater Newbie (entry-level, under $600—simple setup, basic features), Home Theater Enthusiast (mid-range, $800–$2,000—balanced performance and expandability), and Home Theater Fanatic (high-end, $3,000+—audiophile-grade power and advanced processing). To simplify we stuck with Denon. Although we have used AVRs from Onkyo, Sony, Marantz, Pioneer, and Yamaha in our theaters, we chose Denon because of their reliability, relative price/performance ratio, and excellent room calibration features. Category Pick Price Channels Power (W/ch) Home Theater Newbie Denon AVR-S570BT $449 5.2 70 Home Theater Enthusiast Denon AVR-X3800H $1799 9.4 105 Home Theater Fanatic Denon AVR-A1H $7199 15.4 150 Home Theater Newbie: Denon AVR-S570BT If you're new to home theater or upgrading from a soundbar, this AVR keeps things simple but includes the key features. It supports 5.2 channels for basic surround sound and passes 4K video from your set top box or game consoles. Audyssey auto-calibration checks your room and adjusts the sound for you with minimal intervention by you. Users like its clear, balanced audio in small to medium rooms, so movie soundtracks are improved without complicated setup. The Denon AVR-S570BT has an Amazon rating of 4.3 stars out of 5 by over 1600 users. Home Theater Enthusiast: Denon AVR-X3800H Enthusiasts get a great mix of power and features with the X3800H's 9 amplified channels that include support for 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos. The upgraded Audyssey MultEQ XT32 fine-tunes the sound for your room, making bass and dialogue clearer and more powerful. You will notice an improvement over the Newbie System system in clarity and and it has more features including six HDMI 2.1 ports that support 8K and 4K at 120Hz gaming with VRR and ALLM. HEOS lets you stream music wirelessly from services like Spotify. It's also good for music, with support for high-resolution audio. One small downside: it's bulkier than slimmer models. It's ideal for expanding your system without breaking the bank. The Denon AVR-X3800H has an Amazon rating of 4.4 stars out of 5 by almost a 1000 users. Home Theater Fanatic: Denon AVR-A1H Audiophiles and home theater fans will love this top-of-the-line receiver. It handles up to 15.4 channels (powers 15 at once) for big setups like 9.1.6 Dolby Atmos or Auro-3D. It puts out 150 watts per channel with clean, powerful sound, using high-current amps and ESS Sabre DACs for high-res audio up to 24-bit/192kHz. It includes advanced room calibration with optional Dirac Live or Audyssey, plus IMAX Enhanced for movie-theater quality. All seven HDMI inputs support 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz, and there are analog inputs for turntables. It's overkill for small rooms but will shine in a dedicated theater delivering realistic, immersive sound. Downsides: expensive and uses a lot of power. The Denon AVR-A1H has an Amazon rating of 5 stars out of 5 by 5 users.
This week on the Sinica Podcast, I speak with Jonathan Czin, the Michael H. Armacost Chair in Foreign Policy Studies and a fellow at the Brookings Institution's John L. Thornton China Center. His new essay in Foreign Affairs, “China Against China: Xi Jinping Confronts the Downsides of Success,” challenges the dominant Western narrative of Xi Jinping as either Mao reincarnate or a brittle autocrat presiding over imminent collapse. Instead, Czin argues that Xi's most illiberal reforms can be understood as attempts to cure the pathologies of China's own success. We discuss his framing of Xi's “Counterreformation,” how it helps explain China's current political direction, and what it reveals about our own analytical blind spots in the West.7:15 – Xi's “reformation” and Carl Minzner's “end of reform and opening”12:18 – Corruption, decentralization, and the “lost decade” under Hu and Wen20:12 – Defining “resilience” and what Xi means by “eating bitterness”29:45 – The “downsides of success”: property, corruption, and governance contradictions45:30 – Counter-reformation vs. counterrevolution: what Xi wants to preserve and discard54:20 – The myth of yes-men: triangulation and feedback in Xi's leadership style1:07:07 – Cognitive empathy and why most U.S. analysis of Xi falls short1:15:35 – Systems that can't course-correct: comparing the U.S. and China1:22:05 – Cognitive empathy, ideology, and the problem of American exceptionalismPaying it forward:Jonathan: Allie Mathias and Dinny McMahonRecommendations:Jonathan: The Thirty Years War by C.V. Episode 2681- Vinnie Tortorich welcomes dietitian Michelle Hurn, and they discuss disrupting Big Food, lobbying for truth, and the downsides of shortcuts. https://vinnietortorich.com/2025/08/downsides-of-shortcuts-michelle-hurn-episode-2681 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Lobbying for Truth Michelle Hurn has been a Registered Dietitian for years, but she challenges the current nutrition guidelines. (2:00) Early nutrition guidelines were established by Seventh-day Adventists to eliminate the eating of meat. The facts are lined up and vetted in FAT: a documentary. (6:30) Vinnie curates knowledge of other experts on his show. (11:30) Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has caused some disruption to the messaging; however, as long as Big Pharma and Big Food are allowed to lobby, there won't likely be much change. Lobbying affects both sides of the aisle, and changes have not been made. (18:00) It's part of what has been driving the decrease in metabolic health of our society. (20:00) Being a registered dietician is a challenge; positions in hospitals and schools pay less than half of what Big Food will pay. (22:00) Vinnie shares the story (and misconception) behind “fat burns in the flames of carbohydrates.” (28:00) Michelle shares her story of how she discovered what she had learned was wrong. (34:00) Her health had deteriorated, and she became very ill. It was when she learned about low-carb that she regained her health. Vinnie shares how he figured out how to fuel himself with fat for his ultra races. (40:00) Michelle is a marathon runner and made discoveries of her own, including high-fat/low-carb to fuel her body. (45:00) The Downsides of Shortcuts GLP-1s are all the rage, but nothing in biochemistry is free of consequences. (51:00) You can't affect any one issue in isolation. There are downsides to shortcuts. The side effects are a serious concern. Suppressing ghrelin can suppress hunger, but that means it also suppresses autophagy, which is your body's way of cleaning toxins from its cells. (52:00) They discuss other implications associated with GLP-1s, like loss of muscle tissue. Michelle and Vinnie have both helped numerous people just through the low-carb lifestyle approach alone. (57:00) Those changes alone have gotten people off certain medications and reversed diabetes.
