Taimur Baig - Don't Let the Upsides Distract You From the Downsides

BIO: Taimur Baig heads global economics and macro strategy for interest rate, credit, and currency at DBS Group Research. STORY: Taimur invested in his friend's hedge fund that was dealing with Iraqi stocks. He lost 50% of his investment after the country entered a war three years later. LEARNING: Don't get swayed by the upside and forget about the downside. Always analyze the risks, especially when the deal seems too good.   “Don't get swayed by greed and the potential upside, and forget about the downsides.”Taimur Baig  Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/taimur-baig-7644335/ (Taimur Baig) heads global economics as well as macro strategy for interest rate, credit, and currency at DBS Group Research. He is a Director Fellow at the Asian Financial Think Tank and a council member of the Economic Society of Singapore. Before joining DBS in 2017, Taimur was a Principal Economist at the Economic Policy Group, Monetary Authority of Singapore. Earlier, he spent nine years at Deutsche Bank, where his last position was Managing Director and Chief Economist, Asia. During 1999-2007, Taimur was based in Washington, DC, at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund, where his last position was Senior Economist. He is the host of the https://omny.fm/shows/econstrategy/playlists/kopi-time-e21-ifc-s-vivek-pathak-on-investing-in-e (Kopi Time Podcast). Worst investment everIn 2012, Taimur's friend—a Wall Street success story—who ran a hedge fund was pivoting to geopolitical bets. The idea was to invest in stocks in countries just recovering from war. Taimur was impressed by his success in the 2000s and had a lot of respect for him. So he started following the setting up of this fund. The fund's first investment idea was Iraq. The country had had 10 years of massive conflict. But after a decade of death and destruction, the country was coming together, and there was some peace in place. There was huge potential for the US Iraqi stock market to make an earnings growth of about 40% a year. This was the mother of all bull markets to latch on to. Taimur had little understanding of the institutional nature of the Iraqi capital market. Still, he trusted his friend, who had made trips around Baghdad with US Marines and talked to entrepreneurs and the people who were to set up and run the new Iraqi stock exchange. It all seemed very good. The fund launched in 2012, and Taimur invested in it. By the end of 2013, things were going really well, and the value of the investment was growing steadily. Then the insurgency began, and the following years got terrible in terms of security, as well as deep disappointment in the Iraqi government's ability to channel oil resources to support Iraq's economic rejuvenation. In 2016, Taimur's friend called him from New York and informed him that he would shut the fund down. He said he'd pay Taimur 50% of his investment in that fund. Lessons learnedDon't get swayed by greed and the potential upside, and forget about the downsides. Be careful when investing with friends. You don't have to reach for the stars and be super greedy when investing. Andrew's takeawaysJust because something sounds cool doesn't mean it's gonna be cool. No matter how exciting an investment opportunity is, don't get too excited and forget to analyze the risks. Actionable adviceGetting into an illiquid investment is a bad idea for the average investor. Investing in liquid things is far more preferable. No.1 goal for the next 12 monthsTaimur's number one goal for the next 12 months is to be a faster runner. He also wants to solve the six sides of the Rubik's Cube a little faster. Parting words  “Just keep listening to My Worst Investment Ever. It's an awesome podcast.” Taimur Baig   [spp-transcript]   Connect with Taimur Baig https://www.linkedin.com/in/taimur-baig-7644335/ (LinkedIn) https://twitter.com/taimurbaigdbs (Twitter)...

EYE on NPI: TDK WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil for Wireless Charging

Adafruit Industries

This week's EYE ON NPI is all about us giving you the skinny on an ultra-thin way to add wireless charging to your next design - it's TDK's WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil for Wireless Charging! (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/tdk/ultrathin-pattern-coil-for-wireless-charging) This coil is less than a mm thick, and is designed to work with any and all Qi charging chips so you can add wireless charging without having to also design and manufacture a charging plate. If you have a modern smart phone, you may have noticed that it comes with built in wireless charging capability called 'Qi charging.' Qi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qi_%28inductive_power_standard%29) is a trademark name for a thin and smart inductive charging system. Many large gadget companies have standardized on Qi, which means it's easy to find a charging dish - there's even charging plates in many cafe's or waiting rooms. Wireless charging has a few really good benefits (and one or two downsides). Most importantly, it's extremely convenient. Folks are more likely to forgive a design with a smaller battery / battery-life if charging can be done as easily as placing it on a table overnight. Secondly, it allows for a more water-proof design - handy for things like watches and headphones that may use BLE for data transfer. Normally you'd still need to plug in to charge, but now there's no need at all for a USB port! In addition, you get a lot less wear on the power connector, since every insertion (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_hardware#Durability) adds the chance that the connector will get something jammed inside, or a contact worn out, or strain on the connector mechanics that lifts it off the PCB. Downsides of Wireless Charging is that, yes it adds some cost because you need a Qi chip and the matching antenna, and they both take up space in the build as well. Qi is also traditionally 5W which is good, but relies on having a good inductive link between the base and the device. Before Qi, you also had to design both sides of the link, (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1407) which was often not worth the extra effort when time-to-market is so important. Now with Qi you can use any off-the-shelf charging plate or transmitter module (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/2162/6827104). And this antenna is so thin you can easily fit it between your PCB assembly and the plastic enclosure. You might be surprised how easy it is to add Qi standard wireless charging these days, and with the TDK's WCT Ultrathin Pattern Coil (https://www.digikey.com/short/z1r3jtrh) you don't have to make a ton of room. Add in a Qi wireless charging receiver chip (https://www.digikey.com/short/db3rp415) and you can have a magical user experience with no cables. Best of all, the TDK pattern coil (https://www.digikey.com/short/z1r3jtrh) is in stock right now at Digi-Key for immediate shipment - order today and you can be charging by tomorrow afternoon!

Recruiter Mistakes #3: Relying on LinkedIn as Your Primary Source of Candidates with Mark Whitby and Leanne Sara Jones Hunt, Ep #141

Where do you find most of your candidates?  If LinkedIn is your primary platform for sourcing and engaging with candidates, this episode is for you. We are not telling you to stop using LinkedIn. But we believe that it's a mistake to be over-reliant on LinkedIn as your main source of candidates. In this episode, you will hear the downsides of being dependent upon LinkedIn. You'll also learn what specific steps you can take now to enhance your candidate engagement and increase response rates to your outreach.  Episode Outline and Highlights [00:57] The six pillars of a successful seven-figure recruitment business. [2:22] Clients versus candidates - which do you need more of? [3:31] Why it is essential to track the source of the candidates you place. [5:14] The downsides of being over-reliant on LinkedIn as your primary source of candidates. [6:47] Why using InMails may not be the most effective method of outreach. [8:05] Going further - how to leverage multi-channel communication strategies. [10:04] Isn't a 12-step candidate recruitment campaign going overboard? [12:36] Benefits of developing a multi-step, multi-channel approach. [13:38] Two more reasons why it's risky to rely too much on LinkedIn. [15:14] Strategies to increase candidate response. [17:02] Simple steps you can take to put this into action. The Downsides of Being Over-Reliant on LinkedIn LinkedIn is actually the number one source of candidates for the majority of recruiters out there. But there are downsides to being over-reliant on LinkedIn as your primary source of candidates. Some of them are: Your competitors and clients are searching on LinkedIn too.  Candidates are inundated with messages on LinkedIn.  Not every candidate is active on LinkedIn. Also, you have to remember that you do not own the data on LinkedIn. The data belongs to LinkedIn and they could at any time just cut you off. They can restrict your account and remove the facility. All the time you have invested in curating that network can be taken away. So we always recommend that you extract data from LinkedIn and build your own database. Then your ATS will become your number one source of candidates in the future. Going Further and Leveraging Multi-Channel Strategies We are not saying to stop using LinkedIn. We just want you to go much further when it comes to your candidate outreach and activities. Your goal should be to have a sophisticated, multi-touch, multi-channel recruiting campaign in place - one that leverages automation technology. In this episode, we will be giving examples of strategies you can use to increase candidate response and engagement. The Benefits of Implementing a Multi-Touch, Multi-Channel Recruitment Campaign Do not leave money on the table. You owe it to yourself and your candidates to make them aware of the opportunity on offer.  As a recruiter, increasing your response rates translates to more placements and profits. Plus it enables you to have a positive impact on more lives.  Here are some of the benefits of utilizing multi-channel strategies: Increase in response to your candidate outreach. Increase the number of quality candidates that you can present. It will shorten the time to fill positions. Save time in leveraging tools and automation. Have a sense of control over your candidate pipeline. We've been using it since 2019 in a single server setup with billions of rows. No problems at all. And query speeds that seem unreal compared to MySQL and pg.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26316401 Also wanted to share my overall positive experience with Clickhouse.UPSIDES* started a 3-node cluster using the official Docker images super quickly* ingested billions of rows super fast* great compression (of course, depends on your data's characteristics)* features like https://clickhouse.tech/docs/en/engines/table-engines/merget... are amazing to see* ODBC support. I initially said "Who uses that??", but we used it to connect PostgreSQL and so we can keep the non-timeseries data in PostgreSQL but still access PostgreSQL tables in Clickhouse (!)* you can go the other way too: read Clickhouse from PostgreSQL (see https://github.com/Percona-Lab/clickhousedb_fdw, although we didn't try this)* PRs welcome, and quickly reviewed. (We improved the ODBC UUID support)* code quality is pretty high.DOWNSIDES* limited JOIN capabilities, which is expected from a timeseries-oriented database like Clickhouse. It's almost impossible to implement JOINs at this kind of scale. The philosophy is "If it won't be fast as scale, we don't support it"* not-quite-standard SQL syntax, but they've been improving it* limited DELETE support, which is also expected from this kind of database, but rarely used in the kinds of environments that CH usually runs in (how often do people delete data from ElasticSearch?)It's really an impressive piece of engineering. Hats off to the Yandex crew.moreI'd like to add an upside which is:Totally great and simple on a single node.I looked at a bunch of analytical databases and had a lot that started with "so here's a basic 10 node cluster". Clickhouse installed and worked instantly with decent but not "big" data with no hassle. A hundred million rows with lots of heavy text blobs and a lot of columns, that kind of thing. Happily dealt with triple nested joins over that, and with billions of entries in arrays on those columns didn't bat an eye.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29098637 This has been my experience with ClickHouse as well...that is, you can basically close your eyes while writing the schema and still maintain to get extremely impressive performance. That being said, ClickHouse also has a ton of clever levers you can pull to squeeze out better performance and compression which aren't used by default, such as using Delta/DoubleDelta CODECs with LZ4/ZSTD compression, etc. Not to mention, MATERIALIZED VIEWs and/or the relatively newer feature MergeTree Projections[1]

It's Friday afternoon, the clock is ticking, and your fingers are jumping from one key to the other. You're working furiously, your five o'clock deadline is nearing, and the weekend is just around the corner. But you've still got so much to do and less than an hour to finish. You silently curse yourself for not starting sooner. So, what happened? How did you end up running out of time? Well, there were hours you spent scrolling through social media, your multiple coffee breaks, re-reading emails, and completing tasks that you could've started later. Procrastination haunts all of us. We're all guilty of procrastinating and saying, 'I'll do it later,' or 'I'll start in a while.' But the negative impacts of procrastinating can steal dreams, cause missed opportunities, and even destroy lives. Some people are lucky enough to pinpoint their tendency to procrastinate and how much it holds them back. Let's discuss how procrastination can wreck your dreams and how you can combat it. The Origins of the Procrastination is the Thief of Time Often, Charles Dickens gets the credit for coining the term 'procrastination is the thief of time.' However, the truth is that Dickens popularized the proverb by putting it into the mouth of Mr. Micawber. In 1850, Mr. Micawber said, 'My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.' While Mr. Micawber became a widely quoted character for pronouncing the proverb' procrastination is the thief of time,' he was hardly original. In reality, the phrase is an adage created by English writer Edward Young. Young wrote a 10,000-line poem known as 'The Complaint' or 'Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality or simply 'Night-Thoughts.' In this extensive poem, the poet muses over death over the courses of nine' nights,' i.e., nine sections. Young's use of the proverb 'procrastination is the thief of time' goes beyond caution against putting things off. Instead, the poet suggests that time wasted procrastinating one thing is time wasted doing nothing of any consequence. It goes to say that if we delay filling our taxes by arranging our spices alphabetically, the fact remains that we should have done something of far more importance. How Does the Proverb Describe 'Procrastination'? Edward Young describes a procrastinator as someone who procrastinates in doing things at the right time and finds themselves in situations where they had little time to complete the task. Typically, people procrastinate because: • The task is long and complicated. • The activity is tedious and not important. • They prefer doing their pleasurable activities. • They have a careless attitude and believe that nothing wrong will happen if they miss their deadline. • They are over-confident and think that they have enough time/competency to complete the task. • They do it as a result of peer pressure and fear mockery or ridicule if they hand in work early. • They do it due to pure laziness. Why is Procrastination the Thief of Time? 'Procrastination,' deferring a task or putting something off, is the 'thief of time' because you waste time by delaying tasks. This hypothesis potentially embraces two meanings: you are wasting time when you could have accomplished what you need to achieve. And that all procrastination is time-wasting. Let's discuss the top common examples of procrastination: • Someone who spends several days thinking about starting an essential assignment, thus they have to rush to finish work in a hasty and stressful manner. • A person who wastes months before approaching the person they're romantically interested in, thus missing their chance to enter a relationship with them. • Someone who wastes years before starting a project they're passionate about, thus struggling with guilt and shame. • A student who wastes the whole year not studying. According to an insightful study, up to 95% of all people procrastinate to some degree. And with approximately 25% of adults considering procrastination as a defining personality trait, it's no wonder it can be a thief of time that causes various other issues. Another study encompassing over 22,000 employees found that workers in different jobs have different procrastinating habits: ● High Procrastination Jobs- Legal secretaries, library assistants, food servers, sales representatives, and customer service administrators tend to procrastinate the most ● Moderate Procrastination Jobs- Photographers, lawyers, general operation managers, and creative writers often procrastinate ● Low Procrastination Jobs- Chief executives, loan officers, librarians, and economists procrastinate the least Why is Procrastination Bad? Let's take a Closer Look at the Downsides. Procrastination can lead to you missing out on incredible opportunities due to temporary enjoyment. In general, procrastination affects some sectors of your life, such as: • Employment and financial issues • Interpersonal issues • Reduced wellbeing • Worsening of mental and physical health • Delay in getting help • Increased future procrastination • Academic issues Now let's discuss the negative side-effects of procrastination. It can cause: Loss of Time Procrastination makes you realize that you've lost valuable time you could've spent chasing your dreams and achieving your goals. What about Lost Opportunities? Every person I know regretted not taking advantage of an opportunity when it was relevant. In most cases, the underlying cause is procrastination. And the harsh truth is that most opportunities only come by once. Putting Off What Needs to be Done Likely Results in a Poor Product Some people believe that procrastinating motivates them to perform the best. Although it is true for some people, it isn't always the outcome. Completing your essential project at the last minute will probably cause poorer results. What about You Adding Tasks to Other People's Workload No one enjoys getting extra work dumped on them due to another employee's failures. It results in resentment, adds to an employee's workload, and even causes feelings of anxiety. Let's discuss some ways you can stop procrastinating: 1. Make your environment clutter-free and remove distractions to increase your productivity. 2. Arrange some immediate reward you'll receive when you manage to start work. 3. Identify the steps you can take to get started. 4. Figure out what's causing you to procrastinate, think through the causes, and work to resolve them. 5. Keep a prioritized to-do list to avoid forgetting important tasks. 6. Tackle the most challenging task during peak productivity hours. The Bottom Line Procrastination can lead to various academic, employment, financial, and interpersonal issues. Not just this, but procrastination can cause decreased wellbeing, worsen mental health, and make it difficult for you to get appropriate help. Avoid procrastinating and be proactive. Procrastination is the Thief of Time

Hi everyone! In this episode, I'm going solo to share my thoughts with you about processing with your partner in a relationship. Long story short, it's a BIG no from me! Matt and I have found that when we process our relationship or start to coach each other when we have conflict, it just never ends well. I've seen first-hand how much this did not work for us and so I'm giving you all the reasons why I think this may not be the best idea for your relationship.   I talk about how processing can change the dynamics in a relationship, have major effects on sexual intimacy, desire and polarity, alternative ways to “coach” your partner if you're having a disagreement and the importance of having an outside support system (that you have vetted first!) to work through and talk about issues you may be having.   I'd also love to hear your own thoughts on processing with a partner and whether it has worked for you! Have you noticed any differences in your relationship and sexual intimacy when you do process with your partner? Has it improved or hindered the relationship? Let me know!   WHAT ELSE I TALK ABOUT: - How to avoid becoming a teacher, therapist or authority figure over your partner when working through disagreements and have conversations from the heart instead - How processing with your partner may seem helpful at the start but will eventually wear away at your sexual desire, polarity and intimacy - Sometimes we DO need to know when we're projecting but it's best to hear that from a friend, coach or therapist rather than your partner - How something delivered with care, love and from the heart is ultimately better than it coming from a place of anger or resentment - The importance of having a full life outside of your relationship with a strong network of support   Connect with me:   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kelleymbode Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kelley.bode.90  Twitter: https://twitter.com/kelleybode

In Episode 1209, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings) to discuss the potential downsides of the Toronto Raptors trading for disgruntled Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant, before taking a look at the Raptors' Summer League roster. Off the top, Sean and Katie talk about the risks involved with a Durant trade, and why any comparisons to the plunge Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster took in acquiring Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs simply don't compute. Next, they talk about whether the Raptors should be wary of becoming known as the franchise that will quickly ship off beloved franchise icons in the interest of superstar acquisitions. Doing it once with DeMar DeRozan made some sense and led to a championship -- but is it worth gaining that reputation even further for a KD deal, especially if it comes at the cost of one of Scottie Barnes or Pascal Siakam? Lastly, Sean and Katie take a look at the Vegas Summer League roster the Raptors announced on Monday, which includes some fun names like Dalano Banton, Justin Champagnie, DJ Wilson and CEBL standout Christian Vital, but also includes Rodions Kurucs, whose history of domestic violence combined with his very clear lack of NBA-level talent is a puzzling and disappointing inclusion on the team. Be sure to read Katie's piece making the case against a KD trade for the Raptors here: https://uproxx.com/dimemag/toronto-raptors-kevin-durant-nba-trade-rumors/ And because the Kurucs inclusion on the Summer League roster unfortunately makes it timely again, read Katie's piece in response to the Miles Bridges case from Basketball Feelings last week: https://basketballfeelings.substack.com/p/by-the-numbers Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Welcome to The Sports Docs Podcast with Dr. Catherine Logan and Dr. Ashley Bassett. On each episode we chat about the most recent developments in sports medicine and dissect through all the noise so you know which literature should actually impact your practice. On today's episode we're focusing on cartilage defects of the knee with Dr. Clayton Nuelle, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Missouri and team physician for Mizzou athletics. His current research focuses on improving cartilage restoration and joint preservation techniques, so we are very excited to have him join us for our discussion today. We have some great articles for you that contribute well to our conversation on the surgical treatment of knee cartilage disease. The first article is a level I prospective RCT published in the May 2018 issue of AJSM titled “Matrix-Applied Characterized Autologous Cultured Chondrocytes Versus Microfracture – Five Year Follow-up of a Prospective Randomized Trial.” This multicenter study was performed at 14 sites across 7 different countries. Patients with symptomatic full thickness cartilage defects greater than 3 cm in size and involving the femoral condyle or trochlea were randomized to either the MACI procedure or microfracture procedure. If you're not familiar with the MACI procedure, we definitely recommend checking out our last Overtime episode where we do a deep dive into the details of that surgical technique. In this 5-year clinical trial, Brittberg and colleagues found that while both groups significantly improved after surgery, patients who underwent the MACI procedure were both clinically and statistically significantly better at 5 years compared to patients who underwent microfracture. Then, from the February issue of AJSM this year, we review the publication titled “Isolated Osteochondral Autograft versus Allograft Transplantation for the Treatment of Symptomatic Cartilage Lesions of the Knee.” Bryan Saltzman and his team at OrthoCarolina performed a systematic review of Llevel I and II studies investigating osteochondral transplant techniques. For our listeners, osteochondral transplants can be performed using autograft – the patient's own tissue, or allograft – donor tissue. Traditionally, autograft transplant or “OATs” has been used for smaller defects, to minimize donor-site morbidity, and has the benefits of avoiding an immune response and no concern for disease transmission. The osteochondral graft is typically harvested from nonweightbearing areas of the knee, such as the intercondylar notch or supracondylar ridge. Allograft transplant or “OCA” is indicated for larger defects. Benefits include the lack of donor site morbidity and the ability to take a graft from an area that correlates with the defect being addressed, such as patella to patella. Grafts can also be size-matched during the ordering process. Downsides include having to wait for allograft availability and cost, in addition to the immunologic and disease transmission risks already discussed, though those are very rare. Both techniques have the benefit of addressing not only the cartilage disease but also underlying bone loss. This systematic review concluded that both OATs and OCA resulted in favorable patient outcomes and graft survival rates at 5-year follow up, with no significant differences between the two.  The autograft group was significantly younger, had smaller defect size, used a larger number of plugs and more frequently treated medial femoral condyle lesions. The allograft group had a larger number of patients with lateral femoral condyle and trochlear lesions.

Get curious not critical. Why did you fall off track? What was the antecedent? What can you do to prevent that in future?2. Re-evaluate what your track is. Is it value driven? What are the risks associated with staying off track? Potential benefits? What will it take to get back on track? Downsides? Potential benefits?3. Consider your personality type. Do you work well with new year new me style changes? Or small easy wins?4. MOs. Can we have a reset? Or would restriction send you into a spiral of over-restrict/over-indulge?5. Set daily habits. Start small. Habit stack.6. Get parameters in place. You might accept you're staying ‘off the rigid track' but still within the ball park. For my own nutrition, this looked like minimum 2 portions of protein a day and 6 portions of fruit and veg. With food:1. Go food shopping2. Fill your house with foods you want to eat3. If necessary, clear out the foods you don't want to eat and/or note how you want to work on them and make a plan of how to do so.4. Have a plan of how these foods will be used5. The leak of a draft ruling by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade has the entire country talking. Phil, Skye, and Kaitlyn discuss the overreactions from both the Left and Right, speculate about what a post-Roe America might look like, examine the complicated history of abortion including why many evangelicals originally supported Roe but then dramatically flipped on the issue, and share their hopes for what comes next. Then, acclaimed historian Mark Noll talks about the 30th anniversary of his influential book, “The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind.” In the early 1990s, Noll celebrated the strength of the evangelical church, but he warned about a dangerous shortage of evangelical scholars. Today, he fears the opposite. While evangelical scholarship has never been stronger, Noll is deeply concerned about an anti-intellectual church taken with conspiracy theories and partisan politics. I don't write-off ANY investments, but I want to make clear to everyone that ALL investments have their upsides and downsides. I felt compelled, today, to bring to light specific situations where target date funds are not optimal for investment. These funds typically make things as simple as possible for investors that only want to take minimal responsibility, but their simplicity is also to the demise of investors' ability to take the appropriate amount of risk for the commensurate amount of return.   Begin your path to financial freedom today: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjyCApAbHBN0Jtw5bAehbRg?sub_confirmation=1   Don't forget to like, subscribe, and leave comments below as I would love your feedback. BenGreenfieldFitness.com/energybalance Are you exercising too much? Is hormesis a bad thing? How much exercise is too much? Should we be avoiding things like carb restriction, saunas and cold? Is caloric restriction really not necessary for lifespan? My first guest on this podcast - Jay Feldman - is a health coach, independent health researcher, and the host of The Energy Balance Podcast, and has strong opinions on all the questions above, and many others. He has degrees in neuroscience and exercise physiology from the University of Miami and decided to forgo medical school after realizing that the conventional medical approach was not the solution to the health problems that so many of us face. After working through various conventional and alternative health paradigms and trialing countless diets (including everything from vegetarian to keto), Jay came across the idea that cellular energy is the foundation of our health. He now uses a bioenergetic approach to help men and women around the world maximize their cellular energy and achieve freedom from low-energy symptoms like chronic hunger & cravings, fatigue, brain fog, poor sleep, gut issues, and weight gain. Jay is joined here by Mike Fave, an independent researcher, and a Registered Nurse. Traditionally educated in western medicine as an RN, his true passion is independent research. He spent close to a decade with his head inside a Pubmed article or a physiology textbook, and his heart in some type of nutrition or supplement experiment. In the beginning of his journey, Mike damaged his health getting caught up in dietary dogma and nutrition ideology. He went the western medical route to try to fix the damage and wound up getting talked into a surgery he didn't need. It's taken him years to recover, but he doesn't regret it because he learned significantly from his mistakes. He saw all sides of the spectrum from being a patient to being a practitioner to being a part of the alternative health scene. He takes his lessons, experiences, and knowledge to help others not only avoid the mistakes he made, but help them rebuild their health without dogma, ideology, or authoritarianism. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The history of the bioenergetic model... -How Jay and Mike reconcile the dichotomy between their view and the traditional view of a hormetic approach to health... -Why the traditional hormetic model is incorrect... -What causes energy access that leads to chronic disease… -What Jay and Mike's model looks like in the real world... -Clarity on what Jay and Mike's model does NOT mean... -Better ways to get the benefits of hormesis without the stress of hormesis... -And much more... What helped him the most to unwind and step away from the judgmental pressures he grew up with.   Power Quotes From The Show   Connecting to God Through Art "My North Star is to create art that inspires and empowers people to find their true selves - to connect with source and the greater space that is out there; whatever you want to call it - The Universe, God - I believe in it all. God is creativity and as artists, we are the midwives of creativity. We give birth to sources and ideas on this planet." - Nick Onken   Inner Work for Greater Creativity "As an artist, the more work I do on myself, the greater shift I see in the art that I create. I took a lot from MITT but left behind whatever didn't serve me and that experience created a huge shift for me; from there I launched my podcast and started to build myself back up." - Nick Onken   Ego vs Service Driven "Once you start getting external validation, the ego comes in; it's like the snake eating its own tail analogy. You have to stop it, shred that skin, and go back into a service state. Even still for me, that is something that challenges me and it's a constant balance. I try to come from a place of having a service intention and allow that to fill me up rather than get caught up in needing to be acknowledged and honored for this work. Every day I have a grounding practice that helps me live in a more service-oriented state of being." - Nick Onken   Links From Today's Show  Creative Identity Quiz Onken Radio Alan Watts The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss Mastery in Transformational Training with Lewis Howes Vipassana Meditation – A Spartan Race For The Mind Russell Brand Jeff Krasno from Commune Podcast Identity Alchemy: What I Learned From My First Big Photo Job Official Trailer | The Secret Life of Walter Mitty The Art of the Start 2.0 by Guy Kawasaki Onken Hat The Identity Alchemy of Losing My Religion One Of The Greatest Battles Of The Heart-Centered Entrepreneur and Building A Personal Brand Shop the Wellness Force Store breathwork.io Paleovalley – Save 15% on your ACV Complex with the code ‘JOSH' Seeking Health - Save 10% with the code 'JOSH' Organifi – Special 20% off to our listeners with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Botanic Tonics – Save 40% when you use the code ‘WELLNESS40' Essential Oil Wizardry: Save 10% with the code 'WELLNESSFORCE' Cured Nutrition – Get 15% off of your order when you visit wellnessforce.com/cured + use the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Nick Onken Instagram YouTube Twitter Facebook Pinterest About Nick Onken Nick Onken is a world-renowned photographer, host of Onken Radio and creative entrepreneur devoted to inspiring the world to create their moments.
