Hi. For our third and final Background Information Episode, Ty and Aidan, the hosts of Fun Factor, join us for an hour to flip through magazine reviews of Skies of Arcadia! All four of us are capping out RPG visuals at 8/10, receiving Golden Man location information, misunderstanding Duke Nukem's wants and needs, running the triple negative olympics, borrowing ideas from Final Fantasy, gibbering like mad fools, doing british accents, lamenting 128 bits, harkening back to early days, forecasting typos signaling prestige, disenchanting sourpusses, teetering on magnificence, creating Scott Steiner, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. The remainder of the episode features your normal hosts hacking out random battles, cameoing in other games, teasing a modern release, learning some optimization tricks, sharing memories, laying out expectations, counting stuff, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. Skies of Arcadia was easily the best RPG in the year 2000 for Dreamcast. Clare Civil Defence has been recognised for its decades of dedicated voluntary service to communities across the county with a special Civic Reception hosted by Clare County Council this week. For generations, Civil Defence volunteers have provided vital support during emergencies, severe weather events, public gatherings and search and rescue operations, giving countless hours of their time to help keep people safe. The reception was an opportunity to acknowledge not only the organisation's long history of service, but also the commitment, professionalism and community spirit of its volunteers. Joining Alan Morrissey earlier was Steven Hayes, Civil Defence Officer with Clare County Council, to reflect on the honour and the work of the organisation. Photo (c) Eamon Ward

Irish author and analyst Emmet Connor tells host Tom he has focused since 2015 on Marxism/communist indoctrination, defining it as an international revolutionary ideology aimed at destroying existing hierarchies and rebuilding a utopia. He argues “globalism” and the New World Order are communism repackaged, seen in open borders, climate policy, food controls, attacks on farming, education, and cultural issues like DEI and gender ideology, with Christians targeted. He discusses Ireland's pro-globalist politics, COVID as totalitarian economic attack linked to the CCP, and a broader China/Russia-led push for world dominance, including Africa via Belt and Road. Tyler Anbinder focuses on the establishment of Castle Garden in 1855 as a centralized reception center to protect immigrants from swindlers. Hubert Glenn, an Irish-speaking clerk, managed record-keeping there for nearly 40 years, though most of these records were tragically destroyed in an 1897 fire. Anbinder also explores the political landscape, specifically the rise of the Know-Nothing Party. This nativist movement sought to disenfranchise Irish Catholics by extending naturalization requirements to 21 years. Although the party gained significant power in the mid-1850s, its influence faded as the national debate shifted toward the issue of slavery. (6)1870 CASTLE GARDEN

This country does a decent job in our primary schools working with children and young adults with special needs. Certainly many improvements have been made in the last 40-50 years. But once neurodivergent kids become adults, that support seems to vanish. Tami Gomez stepped into this large breach by launching the UC Davis Neurodiversity Coding Internship Program. This new program creates professional pathways for neurodivergent individuals by offering hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world exposure to healthcare operations, specifically in inpatient medical coding. I'm thrilled to get her back on the program to talk about this, her greatly expanded role as Executive Director, Mid Rev Cycle, HIM, Coding, CDI Programs, & Revenue Integrity, and a cutting-edge new initiative she spearheaded that's already making a big financial impact. Listen in as we discuss: Origins of UC Davis Neurodiversity Coding Internship Program: Tami's own story of neurodivergence Getting started—funding, early struggles and sticking points, partnership with UCLA The curriculum and beyond: What are they learning, thanks to generous donations from HCPro/AHIMA, and not just education—taking students all the way through CCS credentialing and job placement Reception from attendees and the industry at large What makes neurodivergent people uniquely able to code, and their real struggles interviewing and entering the workforce Tami's new busy day job as Executive Director, Mid Rev Cycle. HIM, Coding, CDI Programs, & Revenue Integrity at UC Davis Health. New Initiative: High-Pay Huddles and its financial impact Increasingly tech-enabled coding and CDI professions—are we in danger of losing them to AI? Updates on her personal life as a party planner, why her colleague Penny Jefferson rocks so much, and a new song for the #OTR Spotify Playlist... Chosen by Justin, Only the Lonely arrived in 1991 as a gentler, more bittersweet John Candy vehicle than the broad comedy many audiences might have expected. Written and directed by Chris Columbus and produced by John Hughes and Hunt Lowry, the film brought together Candy, Maureen O'Hara, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Quinn, James Belushi and Kevin Dunn for a Chicago-set romantic comedy-drama with a softer heart than its VHS-era packaging probably suggested. A widely reported production budget is not readily available, but the film earned around $21.8 million domestically after opening wide through 20th Century Fox in May 1991.The production leaned heavily into real Chicago texture, with principal photography beginning on 1 October 1990 and running until 22 December 1990. Locations included North Avenue Beach, the Pump Room, St. John Cantius Church, Greektown and Comiskey Park, with additional interiors built at Chicago Metropolitan Studios. Reception was mixed-to-positive in the period, with particular praise for the performances, and the film has since picked up a modest legacy as one of John Candy's more tender, underrated leading roles: less “falling through furniture,” more “quietly breaking your heart while still making you laugh.”Trailer Guy SynopsisIn a city of crowded bars, roaring trains and overbearing family dinners, one Chicago cop is about to face the most terrifying case of his career: falling in love.Danny Muldoon is loyal, dependable, kind-hearted… and still very much under the command of his mother. But when he meets Theresa, a shy funeral home worker with a quiet charm, Danny sees the possibility of a life beyond guilt, duty and being emotionally handcuffed to the family sofa.Fun FactsOnly the Lonely was Maureen O'Hara's first feature film appearance in roughly two decades, bringing a classic Hollywood presence into a very early-90s comedy-drama.Chris Columbus reportedly wrote the role of Rose with Maureen O'Hara in mind, which is ambitious casting energy of the highest order. The film's title comes from Roy Orbison's famous song “Only the Lonely,” giving the movie an instant dose of old-school melancholy before anyone even says a word.John Candy plays a romantic lead here, which makes the film stand apart from many of his broader comic roles of the 1980s and early 1990s.The cast includes both Macaulay Culkin and Kieran Culkin in small roles, because apparently the early 90s had a legal requirement that at least one Culkin appear somewhere near a John Hughes production.Maurice Jarre, the Oscar-winning composer behind classics such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, provided the score. The film was shot in the same general Chicago orbit as several John Hughes-associated productions, helping give it that familiar neighbourhood feel rather than a glossy studio rom-com sheen.Anthony Quinn appears as Nick, the persistent neighbour with eyes for Rose, adding some old-school screen charisma to the film's family chaos. The story has often been compared to Marty, the 1955 romantic drama about a lonely bachelor trying to find love while dealing with family pressure.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. What if everything you've ever wanted isn't somewhere out there waiting to be attracted...but already here, broadcasting like a radio signal you just haven't learned to tune into yet? That's where this conversation starts. And it only gets more interesting from there.Cathy Heller spent three years studying ancient Jewish mysticism with rabbis in Jerusalem, not on a retreat...during a war. And what she brought back has been downloaded over 45 million times. Her distinction between the Law of Attraction and the Law of Reception sounds subtle. It isn't. It changes everything about how you understand why some people seem to effortlessly move through life while the rest of us are white-knuckling the steering wheel. In this episode, you'll hear about the radio metaphor that's been living rent-free in Cathy's head for 25 years, a mole who whispered the secret of the universe to God, what Michael Jordan said to her on a stranded flight in the middle of a snowstorm, and why the moment she walked out of a networking event she could not stand, she ran directly into the head of Apple Podcasts. Also: why your nervous system might be the single biggest thing standing between you and the life you want. And what five minutes every morning can actually do about it. This one's a frequency shift. Don't miss it.――――――――――Website: cathyheller.com Podcast: Everything Is EnergyInstagram: @cathy.hellerBook: Abundant Ever After (Simon & Schuster — paperback out now)_____________________________________________Free gift: My Life After Death: A Memoir from HeavenWant to know what the afterlife actually looks like? When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question Me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My Name He will give you.” Memorial of Saint Isidore Saint Isidore, pray for us! Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2, 3, 4) Terry and Joshua discuss Early Fathers of the Church on worthy and unworthy reception of the Holy Eucharist

Mutual Reception: Mercury in Taurus + Venus in Gemini Hey cosmic cousins! On this week of Cosmic Weekly Weather, for the week of May 4–10, 2026, Mary Evans joins us unexpectedly. We light a candle she gifted, and drop into the living ritual of the moment together. Notable Transits of the Week Mutual Reception: Mercury in Taurus + Venus in Gemini Mutual reception is an astrological condition where two planets are in each other's ruling signs, creating a reciprocal exchange of energy. It's as if each planet is hosted by the other, so even if they're not in their most natural placement, they gain support, access, and understanding through that relationship. This often creates a feedback loop where the planets can “help” one another express more fluidly. This week, we are experiencing a mutual reception between Mercury and Venus—meaning they are in each other's signs, creating a supportive, reciprocal relationship. Mercury (the mind, communication) is in Taurus (ruled by Venus), while Venus (love, beauty, pleasure) is in Gemini (ruled by Mercury). This creates an energetic “infinity loop” or feedback system, each planet strengthening and softening the other. We were likening this specific combo of Mutual Reception to the ‘2 of Pentacles' in the tarot. Themes of the week include balance, harmony, and learning how to integrate thinking with feeling, and value with curiosity. Mercury in Taurus invites us to slow down, speak from embodied truth, and tend to practical, sensory realities (like finances, food, touch). Venus in Gemini encourages play, connection, curiosity, and finding joy in conversation, collaboration, and “fun in pairs.” Together: where Taurus may feel fixed, Gemini brings movement; where Gemini may feel scattered, Taurus offers grounding. Reflection Questions for the Week: How can I speak what I value? How can I stay curious about what I love without rushing to define it? Song of the week: “Goddess Code” by Lizzie Jeff This track is a mantra for the current astrology and mutual reception of Mercury in Taurus + Venus in Gemini —calling in abundance, friendship, greater alignment, purpose and joy. Lyrics about manifesting finer things, embodying what you preach and traveling with friends. Let this be a soundtrack for pleasure, self-worth, and intentional creation. Cosmic Summer Bundle Special! Is “China” as we understand it today really a continuous civilization — or a modern political construction? In this episode of The China Desk, host Steve Yates sits down with Bill Hayton, journalist and author of The Invention of China, to unpack one of the most provocative ideas in China studies: that many core concepts of modern China — including its identity, history, and territorial claims — are far more recent than commonly believed. Drawing on his research, Hayton explains how ideas like Chinese nationalism, sovereignty, and even the concept of “China” itself were shaped in the late 19th and early 20th centuries — often influenced by foreign thinkers, political pressures, and the collapse of the imperial system. A major focus of the conversation is how these constructed narratives continue to shape modern Chinese policy, propaganda, and global strategy. The discussion covers: • Why the term “China” was not historically used by Chinese rulers • How modern Chinese identity emerged in the late imperial and early republican periods • The origins of the “5,000 years of history” narrative • How nationalism was constructed to unify diverse populations • The invention and political use of Han ethnic identity • Why historical narratives are used to legitimize CCP authority • The concept of “national humiliation” and its political function • How myths about history influence modern Chinese foreign policy • The South China Sea and the origins of China's maritime claims • Why many widely accepted historical claims lack solid evidence • Taiwan's complex historical relationship with mainland China • Why Taiwan has only been governed alongside China for brief periods • How WWII decisions shaped modern territorial claims • Xi Jinping's consolidation of power and rise of hardline nationalism • The role of ideology in shaping CCP domestic and foreign policy • Reciprocity and how the U.S. should approach China strategically Hayton also explains how these narratives are actively reinforced today — from education campaigns to political messaging — to create cohesion, justify policy, and shape how both Chinese citizens and the outside world understand China. The conversation highlights a critical takeaway: without questioning these foundational assumptions, policymakers risk misunderstanding China's intentions, overestimating historical inevitabilities, and limiting strategic flexibility. 00:00 — Intro + Bill Hayton joins the China Desk 00:33 — Background and journalism career 05:04 — How The Invention of China came together 06:06 — South China Sea research and historical gaps 07:09 — Questioning accepted historical narratives 08:20 — The invention of “China” as a concept 10:59 — Why “China” wasn't historically a unified nation 12:16 — Dynasties vs modern nation-state thinking 14:01 — Foreign influence on Chinese nationalism 16:23 — The “5,000 years of history” narrative explained 17:18 — Race, identity, and the Yellow Emperor myth 19:25 — National humiliation as a unifying tool 21:28 — Why historical narratives bind populations 24:19 — The invention of Han ethnicity 26:39 — Political motivations behind ethnic identity 28:55 — Reception and backlash to the book 32:34 — Taiwan: history vs modern claims 34:17 — Why Taiwan wasn't central to China historically 36:37 — WWII and shifting territorial narratives 37:50 — Modern CCP narratives on Taiwan 39:34 — Xi Jinping and rising nationalism 41:17 — Ideology, control, and state power 42:10 — Reciprocity and U.S.–China strategy 45:43 — Final thoughts + where to follow Bill Watch Full-Length Interviews: https://www.youtube.com/@ChinaDeskFNW
