Prayer was never meant to be a transaction, a set of right words traded for a result. It is relational at its root, a turning toward the One who is already truned toward you, and it comes alive the moment we stop performing and start perceiving. This eek we continue our conversation on faith and prayer as perception and reception, sitting with the quiet claim underneath all of it, that faith is the perception of the unseen real, of what already is what it is whether or not our eyes have cautht up to it yet. We will walk through the movements faith makes as it settles into that seeing. There is the wanting that opens us, the receiving that softens us, the having that grounds us in what is already given and running through all of it, the letting go of our need to force. Faith does not grip, it perceives, it receives and it rests in the Real. Come as you are and bring your questions and we'll find our way into this together. We were made by a Maker to be makers. Bruce Herman joins Evan Rosa to diagnose the quiet illness of a passive consumer culture that trains us to sit in front of screens and scroll and take, rather than make. “When we're not making something, we're not whole. We're not healthy.“ His cure is stubbornly ordinary: go make a loaf of bread, grab a stick and start carving, make a good meal or a good cocktail for the person visiting you—anything is resistance to this hypnotic, passive culture. From episode 216 of the podcast, in this segment, Herman traces what it means to receive art not as a consumer but through submission—not master and slave, but subject to subject, that vulnerable openness that lets a poem or a painting change your life. He reflects on making as human wholeness, the difference between art and info-tainment, why suffering can rip us open to beauty (from Walker Percy's writing to Christian Wiman's poetry), Rilke's charge that “you must change your life,“ hospitality as the ultimate act of art, and Herman's closing counsel to make out of love, not fear. Episode Highlights We are in relationship, and we were made by a Maker to be makers. If we let that go somehow and we become mere consumers, I think we begin to enter into some kind of illness of one sort or another. When we're not making something, we're not whole. We're not healthy. And I don't want to make an idol out of health either, but I do think our culture is unhealthy right now. We think of it as, we're discerning buyers. But the fact is we're being turned into very passive creatures. One of the best things you can do is go make a loaf of bread. Go out and grab a stick and start carving it. Anything is resistance to this sort of hypnotic passive culture. If you want to really receive what a poem is communicating, you have to submit to it. You have to let yourself go and enter into what might feel like a bad risk of being changed. Not submit in a sense that I'm a master and you're my slave. It's more like you're a subject and I'm a subject. Mutual submission. We're so guarded so much of the time that it takes something catastrophic to open us up again. Do away with the nonsense that you're not an artist. You can't help it. You were made by a Maker to be a maker. End of story. The ultimate act of art is hospitality, where you're welcoming someone in, to make something beautiful for them. Challenge the bad news with a recognition that daily kindnesses are being poured out everywhere, on every street. Don't give in to fear, because it's not a basis for anything good. About Bruce Herman Bruce Herman is a painter, writer, and educator whose work has been shown in more than 150 exhibitions across the United States and internationally, and held in collections including the Vatican Museums in Rome, the Cincinnati Museum of Fine Arts, and the Grunewald Print Collection of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. The illusion of control while being trained to take Screens and scrolling Political theater and infotainment—very little real journalism left, mostly consumer entertainment Neil Postman and amusing ourselves to death as the frame for the diagnosis Making as resistance—bake bread, carve a stick, do anything against the hypnotic pull Reception as submission—a word out of fashion, reclaimed away from enslavement Mutual submission—the erotic analogy, and desire's corruption in the sexual sins To receive a poem you must risk being changed Rilke's Grecian torso and the charge, you must change your life Subject to subject, not master and slave Walker Percy's museum story—a painting that blazed into life, then went quiet Bringing a friend to re-enter the original encounter vicariously The workman through the skylight—catastrophe reopens what habit had closed Guardedness—why it can take suffering to break us open Christian Wiman—cancer, poetry, and being ripped open toward receptivity You might be changed, and it might not be what you wanted; the risk of real encounter Make from love, not fear Do away with the nonsense that you're not an artist Everyday making—a loaf, a meal, a good cocktail, hospitality Hospitality as the ultimate art; George Steiner's Real Presences and courtesia Beauty can be complex, not merely pretty Fear-mongers left and right—and why not to listen Daily kindnesses—the neighbor, the shoveled driveway, the half-decent casserole Welcome to the festival; let the festival begin #BruceHerman #MakersByNature #ForTheLifeOfTheWorld #FaithAndArt #TheologyOfMaking #ArtAndFaith #Creativity #Hospitality #MakeNotConsume #YaleFaithAndCulture

Afterwards, we collected feedback from the children, asking three simple questions:Have you played golf before?Did you enjoy playing golf?Would you like to play more golf?We also asked what they enjoyed most about the day.In this episode, I'll share the statistics, some brilliant comments from the children, and explain how thousands of pupil voice forms collected over the last five years continue to shape the way we deliver JOLF.

Many thanks to SRAA contributor Andrew, who shares the following recording from Radio 4.“I chose to record the programme on one of my old radios received on the soon-to-be-discontinued Droitwich 198kHz transmitter. The radio is a Pye Mistral (picture attached) which was (almost) the first radio that I even had around 1972. It might even be tuned to the right place on the dial ("Radio 2", 1500m). That was the station that was broadcast on that wavelength back then.It is not a well-performing radio, but it has a wide-ish audio bandwidth and the recording is probably as nice-sounding as it can be on LW - that warm AM sound that you refer to in the programme. Reception was on the radio's internal ferrite rod aerial in one of the rooms of the house here on the South Coast of the UK.”This recording captures a special edition of BBC Radio 4's The Sound of Soft Power, a documentary exploring the cultural, political, and emotional legacy of international broadcasting and shortwave radio. The programme weaves together archival recordings, listener memories, and contemporary reflections on a medium that once connected the world across borders and ideologies. The documentary also makes extensive use of recordings preserved in the Shortwave Radio Audio Archive, highlighting the importance of preserving off-air recordings as historical documents. In addition, SRAA curator Thomas Witherspoon is interviewed during the programme, discussing both the archive itself and the enduring fascination many listeners still have with shortwave broadcasting. While this is not an off-air shortwave recording in the traditional sense, it is very much connected to the history and culture of shortwave listening. Andrew's decision to record the programme from BBC Radio 4 Longwave using a vintage Pye Mistral receiver adds another layer of radio history to the experience — capturing the broadcast with the characteristic warmth and ambience of longwave AM reception just as the Droitwich 198 kHz transmitter approaches the end of its service life. For those interested in radio history, international broadcasting, and the sounds of the shortwave era, this programme is well worth hearing. This recording is being published on 27 June 2026 to mark the closure of the BBC Radio 4 Long Wave service from Droitwich on 198 kHz, bringing to a close one of the United Kingdom's longest-running and most historically significant AM broadcast transmissions. Hi. For our third and final Background Information Episode, Ty and Aidan, the hosts of Fun Factor, join us for an hour to flip through magazine reviews of Skies of Arcadia! All four of us are capping out RPG visuals at 8/10, receiving Golden Man location information, misunderstanding Duke Nukem's wants and needs, running the triple negative olympics, borrowing ideas from Final Fantasy, gibbering like mad fools, doing british accents, lamenting 128 bits, harkening back to early days, forecasting typos signaling prestige, disenchanting sourpusses, teetering on magnificence, creating Scott Steiner, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. The remainder of the episode features your normal hosts hacking out random battles, cameoing in other games, teasing a modern release, learning some optimization tricks, sharing memories, laying out expectations, counting stuff, and wondering if Nintendo Power was on the take. He argues “globalism” and the New World Order are communism repackaged, seen in open borders, climate policy, food controls, attacks on farming, education, and cultural issues like DEI and gender ideology, with Christians targeted. He discusses Ireland's pro-globalist politics, COVID as totalitarian economic attack linked to the CCP, and a broader China/Russia-led push for world dominance, including Africa via Belt and Road. Hubert Glenn, an Irish-speaking clerk, managed record-keeping there for nearly 40 years, though most of these records were tragically destroyed in an 1897 fire. Anbinder also explores the political landscape, specifically the rise of the Know-Nothing Party. This nativist movement sought to disenfranchise Irish Catholics by extending naturalization requirements to 21 years. Although the party gained significant power in the mid-1850s, its influence faded as the national debate shifted toward the issue of slavery. (6)1870 CASTLE GARDEN

The VHS Strikes Back

Play Episode Listen Later May 27, 2026 55:33

Chosen by Justin, Only the Lonely arrived in 1991 as a gentler, more bittersweet John Candy vehicle than the broad comedy many audiences might have expected. Written and directed by Chris Columbus and produced by John Hughes and Hunt Lowry, the film brought together Candy, Maureen O'Hara, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Quinn, James Belushi and Kevin Dunn for a Chicago-set romantic comedy-drama with a softer heart than its VHS-era packaging probably suggested. A widely reported production budget is not readily available, but the film earned around $21.8 million domestically after opening wide through 20th Century Fox in May 1991.The production leaned heavily into real Chicago texture, with principal photography beginning on 1 October 1990 and running until 22 December 1990. Locations included North Avenue Beach, the Pump Room, St. John Cantius Church, Greektown and Comiskey Park, with additional interiors built at Chicago Metropolitan Studios. Reception was mixed-to-positive in the period, with particular praise for the performances, and the film has since picked up a modest legacy as one of John Candy's more tender, underrated leading roles: less “falling through furniture,” more “quietly breaking your heart while still making you laugh.”Trailer Guy SynopsisIn a city of crowded bars, roaring trains and overbearing family dinners, one Chicago cop is about to face the most terrifying case of his career: falling in love.Danny Muldoon is loyal, dependable, kind-hearted… and still very much under the command of his mother. But when he meets Theresa, a shy funeral home worker with a quiet charm, Danny sees the possibility of a life beyond guilt, duty and being emotionally handcuffed to the family sofa.Fun FactsOnly the Lonely was Maureen O'Hara's first feature film appearance in roughly two decades, bringing a classic Hollywood presence into a very early-90s comedy-drama.Chris Columbus reportedly wrote the role of Rose with Maureen O'Hara in mind, which is ambitious casting energy of the highest order. The film's title comes from Roy Orbison's famous song “Only the Lonely,” giving the movie an instant dose of old-school melancholy before anyone even says a word.John Candy plays a romantic lead here, which makes the film stand apart from many of his broader comic roles of the 1980s and early 1990s.The cast includes both Macaulay Culkin and Kieran Culkin in small roles, because apparently the early 90s had a legal requirement that at least one Culkin appear somewhere near a John Hughes production.Maurice Jarre, the Oscar-winning composer behind classics such as Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, provided the score. The film was shot in the same general Chicago orbit as several John Hughes-associated productions, helping give it that familiar neighbourhood feel rather than a glossy studio rom-com sheen.Anthony Quinn appears as Nick, the persistent neighbour with eyes for Rose, adding some old-school screen charisma to the film's family chaos. The story has often been compared to Marty, the 1955 romantic drama about a lonely bachelor trying to find love while dealing with family pressure.Support the ShowIf you enjoy the show and would like to support us, we have a Patreon here.If you're listening on Apple Podcasts or Spotify, leaving us a 5-star review (and a short comment) really helps more people discover the show. Today’s Topics: Joshua Charles joins Terry for Friday with the Fathers 1) Gospel – John 16:20-23 – Jesus said to His disciples:  “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy. When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question Me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My Name He will give you.” Memorial of Saint Isidore Saint Isidore, pray for us! Bishop Sheen quote of the day 2, 3, 4) Terry and Joshua discuss Early Fathers of the Church on worthy and unworthy reception of the Holy Eucharist
