Digging into the Punk Rock/Comic Book connection through discussions with creators, musicians, and fans.
This is an episode that has been in the works for quite some time. Tristan Gallagher is the owner of Coast City Comics in Portland ME. Coast City is a seamless synthesization of all of Tristan's interests into one store. Part Comic Book Store, Part skate shop, Part record store, part arcade, part horror memorabilia. Its a gem in the world of comics retail. We talk his punk rock beginnings, the time Danzig came into the store, his upcoming comic Rad Wraith, and so much more. Another great episode as we roll deeper into 2019. Drew Maxey and James Carrol make up two parts of St. Louis hardcore band Time and Pressure. In this episode we talk their introductions to comics, finding hardcore in the ashes of punk rock, where 'Midwest Hardcore' actually starts, when collecting becomes overwhelming and much more. This is part two of an awesome crossover with my friends from the CPGB Podcast. CPGB stands for Comedy, Punk, Games, and Books. Tune into their most recent episode for another great discussion with me and then come back to listen to us continue that conversation here ! Reid and Ryan are both huge facets of the Raleigh NC comedy scene and have deep roots in comics, punk rock, metal, and skateboarding. We deep dive into all of this and much much more. Please subscribe to both CPGB and Punks and Panels, it helps small time podcasters like us out so much. Check out the Punks and Panels Playlist for each episode for music discussed in each episode!
This an episode that has been in the works for a very long time. Walter Delgado of the, in my opinion, seminal modern hardcore band Rotting Out drops in to talk comics, his upbringing, and drop a whole lot of knowledge for our listeners. Walter talks straight from the heart and we dive pretty deep into the latter years of Rotting Out, his time in prison and some deep topics of self-realization, personal accountability and the ability to grow and change. Listen all the way through and find out how Garth Ennis' Punisher run inspired some Rotting Out tracks. Music from this episode: Rotting Out - Reaper www.purenoiserecords.bandcamp.com Shook Ones - Crunch Time in Tooth Town www.shookones.bandcamp.com
Daniel Warren Johnson is a Chicago based artist/creator whose previous work includes Space Mullet, Ghost Fleet, Extremity and his recent Image title, Murder Falcon. Daniel is also an incredible guitarist and gear nerd, and oh boy do we get into some of that stuff. We talk finding comics and music in the shadow of a somewhat sheltered upbringing, his influences on Murder Falcon, playing guitar as a stress relief from comics work, some fantastic music recommendations and a whole lot more. Daniel is one of my favorite artists currently working in comics, he brings so much style, fluidity, and movement to all of his art and can't wait to see what he wows us with in the future. This one is a little less structured than some previous conversations, just a few friends shittin' around but having a good time. Rob Turner is the vocalist/bassist of Torch Runner and Riley Till is a local artist and aspiring tattoo artist. Rob tells us how to survive being broke and being in a band, some quality NC music history, Riley's time working in a comic book store, and a lot of comic talk including the books that have burned us. One of the best parts of my year was getting the opportunity to become friends with both Rob and Riley so it was a blast to finally record this episode. I DIDN'T GET TO FINISH MY SHEETZ STORY. Music heard in this episode: Crunch Time in Tooth Town - Shook Ones shookones.bandcamp.com Bound by Misery - Torch Runner torchrunner.bandcamp.com
Brian Wickman is a writer based out of Maryland & former guitarist of the bands Eddie Brock & Shokushinbutsu. in 2018 he self-published released his comic 'Big White' and is currently prepping for the release of his creator owned project 'Grit.' We talk about some gear nerd stuff, advice for new writers, the lowdown on some of his work, & a very peculiar Eddie Brock cover. Also; I say something that's gonna lose me some subscribers! So tune in for my goofs and a great time. Music heard in this episode: Crunch Time in Tooth Town- Shook Ones shookones.bandcamp.com Misery Business (Paramore Cover)- Eddie Brock casadediversion.bandcamp.com/track/misery-business-paramore
I sat down with Lennon Livesay of the bands Ecostrike, Seed of Pain, Envision, and many many more. Lennon is one of the first people I knew personally in hardcore that always made his love of comics apparent. Despite knowing each other for a number of years this was our first time ever sitting down and discussing comics. We talk about his personal history with comics, Stan and Jack's Fantastic Four as the bible for the rest of the Marvel Universe, what's working for him in modern books and whats not, and spend a whole lot of time talking about Rob Liefeld (probably longer than anyone ever should.) Rob, if you're reading this check your DM's, Lennon is trying to get in touch. The music in this episode is: Crunchtime in Tooth Town - Shook Ones shookones.bandcamp.com Knightfall - Seed of Pain pleadyourcaserecords.bandcamp.com
Matt Miner is a writer who has put out numerous books through Black Mask Publishing(Liberator, Toe Tag Riot), the writer who brought Gwar: Orgasmageddon to life, and creator of the new breakout hit Poser on Wax Works Comics Marie Enger is an artist who has had work featured in Punks Win!, Nosferatu, her self-written project FHTAGN and Loathing, and much much more. Together they make up two parts of comic collective, Circle Pit Press. We discuss growing up in punk rock and how it influences the work that they have put out and continue to put out, the numerous projects that they have been involved with, and the importance of lifting up friends in the competitive and oftentimes cutthroat comics industry. I sat down with my good friends Sam Romesburg and Adam Meadors, co-writers on Among The Willows, at HeroesCon in Charlotte to discuss their former band Distances, tours we've been on together and horror stories from the road, Comics as a DIY output, creating their first comic. We were also joined by our friend Alex Iseman, fan of all things bald. Special thanks to Alex and his wife Rachel (The Iseman family, plural would it be Icemen?) for giving us a place to record. Music featured in this episode: The intro song is Crunch Time in Tooth Town by the band Shook Ones www.shookones.bandcamp.com The song leading into our conversation was Searching by Distances www.distancesmd.bandcamp.com
