In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com
SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR CONTINUES! Comic book annuals are a remnant of the newsstand distribution era, when Marvel and DC tried to get some extra-sized product on the rack for the summer. With the advent of the direct market, annuals lost a bit of their luster, so Marvel began using them as a vehicle for linewide crossovers. “Atlantis Attacks” from 1989 sprawled across 14 annuals, contriving a way for the Silver Surfer, the Punisher, and three non-consecutive Spider-Man annuals to somehow participate in the same story as the Avengers and Fantastic Four. While Atlantis does indeed attack the surface world (eventually), the main focus of this story is actually the Deviant villain Ghaur, seeking to bring Set the Elder God to Earth. We also take a snapshot of the Marvel Universe circa 1989, learn the history of the Serpent Crown (it involves, canonically and inextricably, Conan the Barbarian) and celebrate Namor the Sub-Mariner's 50th anniversary (largely by sidelining him from the story).Discussed in this episode: Silver Surfer Annual #2, Iron Man Annual #10, X-Men Annual #13, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #23, Punisher Annual #2, Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #9, Daredevil Annual #4 (...or is it #5?), Avengers Annual #18, New Mutants Annual #5, X-Factor Annual #4, Web of Spider-Man Annual #5, Avengers West Coast Annual #4, Thor Annual #14, Fantastic Four Annual #22, plus New Mutants #76 and selected material from Marvel Comics Presents #26 and Avengers West Coast #56.Support the show at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Since the debut of These Are My Children in 1949, the daytime television soap opera has been foundational to the history of the medium as an economic, creative, technological, social, and cultural institution. In Her Stories, Elana Levine draws on archival research and her experience as a longtime soap fan to provide an in-depth history of the daytime television soap opera as a uniquely gendered cultural form and a central force in the economic and social influence of network television. Closely observing the production, promotion, reception, and narrative strategies of the soaps, Levine examines two intersecting developments: the role soap operas have played in shaping cultural understandings of gender and the rise and fall of broadcast network television as a culture industry. In so doing, she foregrounds how soap operas have revealed changing conceptions of gender and femininity as imagined by and reflected on the television screen. In a wide-ranging and enjoyable interview with Dr. Elana Levine, we covered a broad array of subjects pertaining to the history, culture, and craft of soap operas. After an initial conversation, I asked her a series of questions about her work and how it resonates with other genres such as the Real Housewives franchise, especially how original housewives (domestic workers as well as suburban housewives of numerous ethnicities and races) represented the viewership of soap opera consumption and support. We talked about the early origins of soap operas, especially with Proctor & Gamble in the early inception of the soap opera genre to now, with the innovative partnership and collaboration between Proctor and Gamble/CBS and the NAACP in debuting the new soap opera, Beyond the Gates. We discussed the ways in which the viewership of soaps, mostly working women and stay at home women shed light on significant aspects of American Women's and Gender history, women's civic participation (combing public and private space) as well as informs how women viewers, often housewives and domestics, found ways to weave their own life narratives together with those of cast actors, thus contributing to an interpretive lens on life matter,(blurring line between real and imagined), representing both an innovative and inclusive type of Citizenship seasoning process, whereby, via interaction with soap operas stars as both celebrities and everyday people, (as fellow Cinema scholar Anna McCarthy talks about in her work on ways in which 1950s television, functioned as a kind of citizen machine governing America, championed inclusive democratic practice that engaged citizens in repetitious call and response and back and forth conversation about everyday practices of everyday working people. Lastly, we talked about the parallels with primetime soap operas like Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing, Yellowstone, as well as what Dr. Levine calls a hybrid form of soap opera storytelling found in series like Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, and other primetime television series. We also spoke about the parallels between soap operas as meditations on aspects of good and evil, finding interesting synergy with genres such as wrestling as soap opera drama sport, the drama of superheroes and villains in the DC and Marvel Universe, as well as versions of science fiction. We are not slowing down as my Pride Month Feature rolls along with returning show guest Eisner, GLAAD, and Ringo nominated comics writer Steve Orlando hanging out with me to talk about two of his projects dropping with the big two. Last time he was on we were talking about the ongoing Scarlet Witch series which is being continued in a new five issue mini-series The Vision and The Scarlet Witch, recognizing their 50th wedding anniversary which will see the return of White Vision. It's hard to believe their wedding was 50 years ago in Giant Sized Avengers #4. Steve is promising a Lovecraftian slat to the series which I'm personally rather excited about. Recently it was announced that he will also be working on the Magical Mysteries of Shazam on DC Go!, Venom: Original Sin jumps from Marvel Unlimited Online to print, the exciting conclusion of Ripperland who he's co-writing with John Harris Dunning just wrapped up and will be dropping as a trade soon with Dark Horse Comics, and the trade of Avengers Assemble: The Serpent Scenario just hit too. So, Steve is quite the busy guy at the moment. If you want to catch up with him, you can find him on BlueSky or on Instagram. Shark rescue Byron talked about on the show The Vision and The Scarlet Witch From the publisher The next chapter in one of comics' greatest love stories arrives this May! Celebrating the 50th anniversary of their iconic wedding in GIANT-SIZE AVENGERS (1974) #4, Scarlet Witch and Vision are back together in THE VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH, a five-issue limited series by current SCARLET WITCH scribe Steve Orlandoand returning series artists Lorenzo Tammetta and Jacopo Camagni. THE VISION & THE SCARLET WITCH serves as the latest evolution of Orlando's ongoing SCARLET WITCH run, which has successfully redefined the adventures of Wanda Maximoff. Carving out her own path in the Marvel Universe as a solo hero, Scarlet Witch's magic has never been more powerful. But when it comes to helping Vision, she'll need more than strength alone! Befitting their decades-spanning romance, Scarlet Witch and Vision team up for a dramatic saga that will test their souls and break their hearts! The Magical Mysteries of Shazam! From the publisher In The Magical Mysteries of Shazam! by writer Steve Orlando (Supergirl, Martian Manhunter) and artist Giopota, Billy Batson has had to grow up fast. SUMMER CROSSOVER SPECTACULAR BEGINS! Love 'em or hate 'em, big event comics were a defining feature of the Iron Age, cramming a whole universe of superheroes into a single miniseries and/or spreading a single story out over multiple titles. We begin three months of surveying the crossover phenomenon with one of the first major examples: Marvel's Secret Wars II, written and architected by friend-of-the-podcast* Jim Shooter. Whereas the original Secret Wars was designed to take place relatively unobtrusively between issues of the regular monthly books, the sequel sprawled across the Marvel Universe for nine months. The cosmic being known as the Beyonder has come to Earth seeking the meaning of existence, and his limitless power—coupled with childlike curiosity and naivete—makes him a potential threat to the entire multiverse. But, in contrast with its action-packed predecessor, the frequently bizarre Secret Wars II spends much of its time on fish-out-of-water hijinks, thinly veiled attacks on former Marvel creators, mild satire of '80s consumer culture, and some uncomfortable fixations regarding women and relationships. Discussed in this episode: Secret Wars II #1-9, plus various tie-ins._________* (Not really.)Support us at patreon.com/ironageofcomics

Kicking off my Pride Month Feature for year three on the show, today's guest is quickly amassing one of the largest bodies of queer superhero character continuum in the Marvel Comics Universe. He's a two-time GLAAD Award winning author, a three-time National Magazine Award winner, and a winner of the 2024 Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ2S+ Emerging Writers. That would be comics writer Anthony Oliveira. Anthony's run on Avengers Academy has been stellar and one of my favorites on Marvel Unlimited. It's soon to be partially collected for the first time in print this June as a trade paperback and also hitting shelves will be a return for him to Marvel's Pride Month project, Marvel United: A Pride Special, which will feature Captain America and Arnie Roth.
