In this episode of That Would Be Rad, we accidentally tumble headfirst into one of our favorite kinds of episodes. The kind that feels like staying up too late with your best friend talking about all the weird, nostalgic stuff that shaped your childhood. After an unexpectedly chaotic week of migraines, broken computers, school events, sports, and life generally trying to body slam us through a folding table, we decided to ditch the pressure and just hang out. And somehow that led us into a massive rabbit hole involving Encino Man, forgotten 90s cartoons, Batman: The Animated Series, Pauly Shore's bizarre rise to fame, comic book art, old toy lines, and why the early 90s still feels like some kind of magical alternate universe. And honestly? This might be one of the most “That Would Be Rad” episodes we've ever done. What We Talk About in This Episode:Why Encino Man might secretly be the PERFECT 90s movieA deep nostalgic dive into Captain Planet, Bionic Six, C.O.P.S., MASK, and forgotten cartoons from the late 80s and early 90sBatman: The Animated Series and why it still might be one of the greatest animated shows ever made.Absolute Batman, comic book art, Daniel Warren Johnson, Nick Dragotta, Felix Comic Art, and Tyler's thoughts on the comic industry todayA shoutout to listener Siobhan Berry and her incredible podcast Grandma's Been There about growing up in the 50s and 60sWhy old movies, VHS tapes, cartoons, comic shops, and Blockbuster-era culture still feel so comforting to usWhy You NEED to Listen:This episode honestly feels like opening an old box in the attic and finding your childhood inside. If you grew up in the 80s or 90s - renting movies from Blockbuster, watching cartoons after school, collecting baseball cards, reading comics, or quoting dumb movies with your friends - this one's going to hit you right in the soul. It's funny, nostalgic, weirdly emotional at times, and packed with the exact kind of conversations that made us want to start this podcast in the first place. So grab a Surge, throw on your favorite flannel, and come hang out with us for a while.Be Rad & Wheeze the juice, buuuddy.RAD WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR SHOW:JOIN OUR PATREON: Exclusive episodes, bonus content, and behind-the-scenes weirdness: patreon.com/thatwouldberadBUY US A COFFEE: Fuel our late-night research sessions — buymeacoffee.com/thatwouldberad ☕️CHECK OUT OUR MERCH: Grab official That Would Be Rad gear — thatwouldberad.myspreadshop.comSHOW INFO:

This week on the Major Issues Podcast, the hosts step into the wasteland to break down Wonder Woman: Dead Earth by Daniel Warren Johnson, one of the most visceral, emotional, and visually jaw-dropping Elseworlds tales DC has published in years. The crew explores how Johnson reimagines Diana as a mythic survivor in a ruined world, forced to confront the haunting truth behind humanity's fall and her own role in it. We dig into the brutal action, the heavy metal energy of Johnson's artwork, the heartbreaking character turns, and the way this story strips Wonder Woman down to her core ideals to see what still shines through. It is a raw, explosive, and deeply human take on the Amazon Princess, and we are unpacking every punch, revelation, and moment of heartbreak that makes Dead Earth an instant classic. Batman has an 85-year legacy filled with reinvention. What made now the right time to bring the Dark Knight into the Skybox Metal Universe, and why was he chosen as the first DC hero to headline this line?2. Metal Universe is known for its cutting-edge printing innovations — from etched foil to die-cuts and lenticular cards. Can you walk us through the technology that makes these cards stand out physically in-hand and how that translates to the Gotham aesthetic?3. Each Metal Universe line has its own visual identity, whether cosmic, heroic, or elemental. How did your team translate Batman's world — all shadow, grit, and neon — into the visual language of the brand?4. This set spans decades of Gotham history. What was the process for selecting which eras, storylines, and character designs to include, and how did you balance nostalgia with innovation?5. The set features signatures from legendary creators like Gail Simone and Marv Wolfman. What does it mean to have the actual architects of Gotham's mythology participate in this project, and how do their cards fit into the collector experience?6. How do you feel about people selling these on ebay?7. How do you pick out art?8. Your thoughts on the use of a.i. art?8. Can you tease any product on the way?9. (Fun one!) If you were designing your own “Grant Sandground” insert card for the set, what kind of foil finish or chase rarity would it have — and which Gotham character would you want to share a dual card with?

From the past to the future as Vince brings us back to 52 before we end the DC-O-Rama (and the episode) with Absolute Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross! Along the way we talk about Superman (the James Gunn movie and the Red and Blue 2025 Special) and Daniel Warren Johnson, James Harren, and Absolute Batman Annual 2025! Plus, Out of Alcatraz by Christopher Cantwell and Tyler Crook, some Age of Revelation, Jim Rugg's For Adults Only, Tom Gauld and Physics for Cats, Kid Maroon by Christopher Cantwell and Victor Santos, Red Before Black by Stephanie Phillips, Goran Sudžuka, and Ive Svorcina from Boom! and more!
There's zero doubt, Absolute Batman Annual #1 will be one of the year's most talked-about comics. Featuring three stories by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, James Harren, Dave Stewart, Meredith McClaren, and Clayton Cowles, this hefty comic centers on the early Absolute Universe adventures of Bruce Wayne, revealing how that chonky Batmobile came to be, and just how Black Mask's party animals first encountered the Dark Knight. We read the comic a couple of weeks back, and the instant we flipped that last page, we were compelled to get Daniel Warren Johnson into a Zoom room. Thankfully, he obliged. Johnson's untitled story makes up the bulk of the Absolute Batman Annual. It propels Absolute Batman against a white supremacist horde, showcasing some of the most brutal action from the ongoing series so far, while doing so in a way that questions that violence's effectiveness. As Daniel Warren Johnson has showcased in other comics like Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb!, and his recent run on Transformers, badass, jaw-dropping visuals are only half his might as a creator. DWJ breaks hearts as often as he breaks bones. “It's in my blood and it's boiling, and I have to get it out.” In an exclusive conversation with Comic Book Couples Counseling, Johnson explains how his tale in the Absolute Batman Annual came to pass. We discuss his reluctance to contribute to the world so expertly crafted by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, and how one single image eventually caused him to put everything he had into this character and universe. Daniel Warren Johnson tells us why supplying only compelling, catastrophic action isn't enough for him as a storyteller. He requires more than an exclamation point to climax his stories. He needs a question. Absolute Batman Annual is now available from DC Comics. Make sure you're following Daniel Warren Johnson on Blue Sky, Instagram, and his Website. In this episode, we dive deep into Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, one of DC Black Label's most brutal and emotionally gripping comics. Written and illustrated by Daniel Warren Johnson, this post-apocalyptic Wonder Woman story pushes Diana to her limits like never before. We review the plot, characters, twists, artwork, and darker tone of this four-part series. From Wonder Woman awakening to a ravaged “Dead Earth” to her desperate fight for humanity alongside a group of survivors, this story redefines Diana in a bleak but powerful way. Johnson's unique artwork and storytelling style perfectly capture the mix of tragedy, brutality, and hope that makes this book unforgettable. Joining me for this review is special guest Loren from Coffee & Lore, who brings her own perspective and insight into the story's themes and emotional weight. Together, we break down what makes Wonder Woman: Dead Earth one of the most unique DC Black Label comics and why fans of Wonder Woman, DC Comics, and post-apocalyptic storytelling should not miss it.

As reported by The Beat, the Eisner-winning comics journalism website (hell yeah), Comic Book Couples Counselingkinda kicked off San Diego Comic-Con International this year with our Live Podcast Recording at Now or Never Comics in Downtown San Diego. On Tuesday, July 22nd, we invited superstar cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson to chat with us after a signing at the shop. With The Moon Is Following Us recently concluded, his final issues of Transformerson their way, and the Kickstarter launch of his behemoth art book, we had a lot to discuss with DWJ. Today's episode presents the audio from our discussion in full, complete with questions from the audience, and a serious discussion of where The Moon Is Following Us took its readers, without spoiling the narrative for those who have not finished the comic. We also explore Daniel Warren Johnson's relationship with comic book shops and comic conventions. What is his ideal store? Is San Diego different from the many other comic conventions across this country? While our conversation with Daniel Warren Johnson may have launched Comic-Con for us, it represents the conclusion of our SDCC coverage. Please hit those links below to experience pop culture's greatest gathering as we bring numerous other creator interviews to your ears. [School of Everything Else 2025] This was an unexpected burst of sheer joy, and we urge you all to seek it out for yourselves. It's a graphic novel, comprising a 7-issue comic book miniseries about wrestling. We had never read a book written by Daniel Warren Johnson before, nor illustrated by Mike Spicer, but now we're hooked and ready to guzzle down everything else this tag team achieves. Lona Steelrose was just a little girl when she witnessed her mother tragically perish in the ring. Now, because of this very tragedy that motivates her to fight, no other wrestler will touch her. This is until a literal demon necromancer offers her a chance in an intergalactic wrestling tournament. The twist; her tag team partner is Cobrasun, the masked luchador who was her mother's final opponent. This thing is gloriously pulpy and plays out like the best Mortal Kombat you never knew you needed. It was a commissioned show for Tylor, and we are so glad to discover this treasure.
Cartoonist Daniel Warren Johnson joins the show to chat about his recent stretch on comics like Transformers and The Moon is Following Us. Johnson discusses managing the moment, physical media, the physical act of drawing, the phase he's in, original art's impact, whether Transformers has changed how he's viewed, engaging with fans, Transformers' length, what he learned about his art from Transformers, the importance of fun, what goes into The Moon is Following Us, how it feels different, the creative process, the appeal of new things commissions as tools, how much happens in his comics, the stories he tells, his livestreams, and more.
