One of the coolest things about coffee is how it can be used as a catalyst for change. Today we are going to be talking with someone who has built one of the best examples of how a business with a vision can make real progress for inclusion.  We are talking with Lindsay Wredge, Co-founder of 321 Coffee in Raleigh, NC! 321 Coffee is a coffee shop and roaster built on inclusion. Based in Raleigh, NC, 321 currently employs over 50 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). They are the ones roasting the coffee, taking the orders, and making the lattes and in this and many other ways 321 is demonstrating the value of an inclusive business model. The name "321 Coffee" is representative of Down syndrome, which occurs when an individual has 3 copies of the 21st chromosome. The company was founded in 2017 by Lindsay Wrege and Michael Evans. The two met during their freshman year as Park Scholars at NC State University. They had the vision to build a company founded on inclusion. 321 Coffee started with a couple folding tables and a home coffee brewer set up anywhere that would welcome them. These events helped to develop a presence in the community. Raleigh rallied behind the mission and helped 321 grow beyond those folding tables. Today, 321 Coffee operates multiple coffee shops in the Raleigh area and is actively finding new opportunities to expand our impact. We roast our own coffee, offer a full-scale espresso menu, and partner with over 100 different companies to provide them with coffee. Together, we are building a company that stands for inclusion and doing business the right way. In fact, she was born into a family of dog trainers with parents who raised, trained, and competed with dogs in Europe and Russia. Julie began competing with dogs, showing and training them, at age 14. At age 16, she began her professional career as a Canine Trainer and Handler in obedience, protection and conformation. Julie continued her training career while attending Novosibirsk State University and established her own breeding and training programs at age 19. She continued to develop and refine her dog training abilities while serving in various roles in the dog training industry. Before starting Ultimate Canine, Julie served as the Head Trainer and Director of Training and Manager for the K-9 CAMP Training School. During her career, Julie has received numerous awards competing with her dogs all around the world. Throughout the years, Julie has placed 1st overall dozens of times and won many categories with her dogs at International Annual Police Working Dog K9 Olympics. She is also recognized as a leader and an expert within the dog training industry; training provider for Police and Special Forces; she often teaches at local and national courses and seminars. Julie serves her community by conducting demonstrations and educational speeches at schools, conferences, various public events, working with fire and police departments and US Military, and providing training and rehabilitation for “unadoptable” dogs at local humane societies and shelters. Send us Fan MailDaryl Gaunt began working with dogs by decoying for Inglewood PD in 1978. He also worked with the Los Angeles Schutzhund Club where he held the position of Vice President and Assistant Training Director. He then enlisted into the Army for eight years and was a military dog handler for four years. He worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Los Angeles County from 1991 to 2020 and was assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau canine unit from 2003 until his retirement. We are firmly in the “Thunderstorms with 110% humidity” leg of summer tour. The last venue was Enmarket Arena in Savannah, this week we are in Raleigh, North Carolina for Walnut Creek, and next up will be Merriweather Post. Although there are some quirks to this summer tour, Walnut Creek is a well-established venue for Phish fans, going all the way back to 1994. In fact, with just one or two exceptions, Phish's history in Raleigh is their history at Walnut Creek, which makes this a very exciting stop on the tour and an exciting episode. Our tour guide today is Bryan Rodgers; a long-time Phish fan who has lived in and around the Raleigh-Durham area for nearly all his life. Bryan not only tells us about the literal geography of Raleigh, but explains the recent history of Raleigh, where and how the jamband scene fits in over the past 30 years, active venues, and venues long gone, and the best places to get North Carolina Raleigh-style barbecue.In addition, Bryan and I review Phish's history in Raleigh and at Walnut Creek; I'll be honest: there are a lot more music clips in today's episode than there usually are in the venue previews.
