In the 99th episode of Run with Fitpage, we had a world record holder, Karl Meltzer, a.k.a., "Speedgoat Karl". Karl currently holds the record for most 100-mile trail race wins on earth: 38. Vikas and Karl discuss transitioning from marathon or half marathon distances to the longer ones, the ultramarathons. Karl is an ultrarunner and ultrarunning coach based in Sandy, Utah. Meltzer has won more 100-mile ultramarathons than any other ultramarathoner and has held speed records at major U.S. trails, including the Appalachian Trail and the Pony Express Trail. Meltzer's trail runs have been featured in news outlets from Ultrarunning.com to NBC Sports. Meltzer has been a professional ultramarathoner since 1999, and a coach since 2007. While many ultramarathoners tend to be vegetarian, vegan, and anti-alcohol or caffeine, Meltzer has been seen with bacon, Red Bull, and microbrews. On September 18, 2016, Meltzer set an Appalachian Trail record by completing the 2,190 miles over 14 states in 45 days 22 hours, and 38 minutes. This achievement was featured in a 2017 documentary movie "Made To Be Broken". Meltzer's record was eclipsed in September 2017 by Joe McConaughy in a self-supported run. The current A.T. fastest known time was by Belgian runner Karel Sabbe, who completed the trail in 41 days, 7 hours, and 39 minutes on August 29, 2018. Meltzer is the current Race Director for the Speedgoat 50K at Snowbird Ski Resort. To train with Karl, visit www.karlmeltzer.com.Vikas hosts this weekly podcast and enjoys nerding over-exercise physiology, nutrition, and endurance sport in general.  He aims to get people to get out and 'move'.  When he is not working, he is found running, almost always.  He can be found on nearly all social media channels but Instagram is preferred:)Reach out to Vikas:Instagram: @vikas_singhhLinkedIn: Vikas SinghTwitter: @vikashsingh1010

I don't know why noir has become associated with November. Maybe it goes with the shortening days and the gloomy shadows of November. Julia: A slightly odd endorsement today. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen discuss Mariah Carey's rumored grunge album, which has been kept a secret since it was recorded in 1995. Plus, they review Alex G's new album God Save The Animals (23:00), talk Pavement's buzzy reunion tour (40:43), and Smashing Pumpkins' upcoming, massive triple album (48:22).Of course, Indiecast also had some trends to hash out this week. Another music-related course was added to NYU's roster, this time about Lana Del Rey, which prompted a discussion on the importance (or lack thereof) of studying music journalism in college (1:11). The biggest music news story this week was from Drake, who got into a public argument with The Needle Drop's Anthony Fantano, which probably boosted the music critic's cred more than it hurt it (9:11).In the Recommendation Corner this week, Ian notes ISIS' Oceanic 20-year reissue. Meanwhile, Steven praises Elkhorn's new album Distances.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 107 here or below and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. https://spacescoop.org/en/scoops/2217/explosions-help-us-measure-distances-in-the-universe/ How do astronomers measure extremely large distances in the far away corners of the Universe? So this would be the top step on the cosmic distance ladder.   An international team led by Dr. Maria Dainotti, an Assistant Professor at the NAOJ, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, has just found a new way to do it. This is because it is quite hard to find standard candles bright enough to be seen more than 11 billion light-years away from us.    You see, the farther out in space we look, the further back in time we see and the closer we get to seeing the Big Bang, the harder it is to find these objects. At 11 billion light-years away from us, these objects get rarer and rarer.    We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs.  Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can!

Dmitri Tymoczko on The Shape of Music: Mathematical Order in Western Tonality

COMPLEXITY

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2022 85:16 Very Popular

Math and music share their mystery and magic. Three notes, played together, make a chord whose properties could not be predicted from those of the separate notes. In the West, music theory and mathematics have common origins and a rich history of shaping and informing one another's field of inquiry. And, curiously, Western composition has evolved over several hundred years in much the same way economies and agents in long-running simulations have: becoming measurably more complex; encoding more and more environmental structure. (But then, sometimes collapses happen, and everything gets simpler.) Music theorists, like the alchemists that came before them, are engaged in a centuries-long project of deciphering the invisible geometry of these relationships. What is the hidden grammar that connects The Beatles to Johann Sebastian Bach — and how similar is it to the hidden order disclosed by complex systems science? In other words, what makes for “good” music, and what does it have to do with the coherence of the natural world?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week on the show, we speak with mathematician and composer Dmitri Tymozcko at Princeton University, whose work provides a new rigor to the study of the Western canon and illuminates “the shape of music” — a hyperspatial object from which all works of baroque, classical, romantic, modern, jazz, and pop are all low-dimensional projections. In the first conversation for this podcast with MIDI keyboard accompaniment, we follow upon Gottfried Leibniz's assertion that music is “the unconscious exercise of our mathematical powers.” We explore how melodies and harmonies move through mathematical space in ways quite like the metamorphoses of living systems as they traverse evolutionary fitness landscapes. We examine the application of information theory to chord categorization and functional harmony. And we ask about the nature of randomness, the roles of parsimony and consilience in both art and life.If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts, and consider making a donation — or finding other ways to engage with us — at santafe.edu/engage.
