Our recording of #Pratchat83 was delayed at the last minute, so our discussion of The Ankh-Morpork Archives and The Discworld Almanak will have to wait until later in the month - hopefully around the 25th February. But subscriber Molokov suggested it might be fun to discuss some of the other, less book-like Discworld merchandise available, so in this shorter bonus episode, Ben does just that! We'd love to hear about your favourite merch, official or fan-made! Drop us a line and/or a photograph using the hashtag #PratchatMerch on social media, via email, or chat to us via our subscriber Discord. The merch Ben mentions this episode from the Discworld Emporium includes the Ankh-Morpork Doodle Map, Terry Pratchett's Hat silver pin badge; Death's Omega cloak pin; the Band with Rocks In tour T-shirt; the plushie Greebo and rat-onna-stick; beermats of pubs and brands; and the dried frog pills box. It's not as easy to link to individual items at Discworld.com, but things Ben mentioned from there include various pins and badges; rare collectible pins; shopper bags; acrylic beanies; and the Great A'Tuin golf umbrella. The Anoia tea towel Ben liked was also from the Emporium, not Discworld.com, though they have tea towels too. He forgot to mention Discworld.com's notebooks - the Unseen University and Assassin's Guild ones are especially good. And their T-shirts aren't as “subtle” as he remembered, though their socks are certainly a bit less subtle than the Emporium's. The episode title is a reference to a specific scene in Mel Brooks' 1987 Star Wars parody Spaceballs. We'll be back in late February with #Pratchat83, discussing The Ankh-Morpork Archives Volume I and Volume II, and The Discworld Almanak. If you're very quick you could still get a question in about those! In March we're commemorating the tenth anniversary of Terry's death by discussing his thoughts on dying from “Shaking Hands with Death”, the Richard Dimbleby lecture he gave (with help from Tony Robinson) in 2010. It's most readily available in A Slip of the Keyboard, but you can also watch the original speech on YouTube. It gets pretty heavy, but we'll approach this discussion with empathy and kindness. Get your questions for that one in using the hashtag #Pratchat84.
If you know, you know. It's a feeling that every Disney traveler experiences. Whether it's your very first Disney vacation or your 20th Disney vacation, there's one common and magical moment that every visitor experiences: that first walk up Main Street U.S.A.Subtle Disney inspired graphic t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies designed to capture that Main Street feeling It's a feeling that says “we're here.” A feeling when the magic is palpable and the anticipation of everything that's about to come is all around you. Few things encapsulate the magic of a Disney moment than a walk up or down Main Street. It affects how you walk, what you wear and what you do. For those who embrace it, we call that feeling Main Street SwaggerTM and we designed a whole collection to celebrate that feeling. What is Main Street Swagger? Main Street Swagger comes in many forms. Do you get dressed up, or put on a specially-selected outfit for your first walk on Main Street? Maybe it's a special shirt or a special Mickey headband or Mickey ears. Even kids in strollers can rock Main Street Swagger in their own way. We've seen it all over the years. Main Street Swagger can be dapper, Disney themed or a vacation vibe. Main Street Swagger can involve:Stopping for that must-have Main Street photo of you with the castle in the backgroud. Rocking a coffee as you swagger up Main Street in style...soaking it all in. Stopping by the Emporium or Crystal Arts to see what you can add to your outfit to enhance your swagger with something new. There's Main Street Swagger in all of that. But Main Street Swagger isn't just about what you wear, it's how you wear it. That swagger is the feeling of magic in your step. That “I'm home” state-of-mind. The Inspiration for Main Street Swagger at 1923 Main Street The inspiration for the Main Street Swagger phrase and collection came from a single photo. There's a photo of Mike Belobradic (1923 Main Street founder) from 1984. Mike has always had Main Street Swagger and this particular photo captured it all. It led the creation of the “Main Street Swagger” phrase and clothing that was born out of that. The photo features Mike walking with swagger up Main Street U.S.A. in March 1984,wearing a tiger-striped black and white shirt, complete with tropical flowers within the design. Everyone around him in the photo is wearing a plain solid-colored shirt. Mike definitely stands out with swagger. It was a bold move and the genesis for how the Main Street Swagger collection came to be. Main Street Swagger means not caring about the world around you as you make your way up Main Street U.S.A. and into the magic. You're home and the magic is within you. That's what Main Street Swagger is all about. What's Your Main Street Swagger? Every Disney traveler does Main Street Swagger in their own way. Geoff's Emporium on Dominion Road was opened in 1980, by it's namesake, Geoff Lamb. It's become an institution in Auckland, especially for those on the hunt for some bargain fabric or bits for an arts and crafts project. But after more than four decades, Geoff's son Derrol is shutting up shop on their flagship site to relocate to a Browns Bay location for semi-retirement. Reporter Finn Blackwell braved the crowds to speak to those on the hunt for some last -minute deals.

Mister Ed's Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in February. The museum is famous for its one-of-a-kind candy, fudge, and pretzels. Nicole Bucher is the third-generation owner and chocolatier of the museum. Nicole and her husband Isaac purchased the shop in 2014. “My grandfather started the business in 1975. He was kind of an unusual character. And I guess one of the fun things about our business is how much it has evolved over the years. When he first started, he had, you know, fun things from the 70s like cold creatures, like Pennsylvania, coal things, souvenirs and just unusual things that you would find at a tourism stop. So, but what he noticed is that Candy was really popular, and he also had this kind of wacky small elephant collection. He threw it in the store, and it got a lot of attention. So, he started focusing on the things that made money and got interest, “said Nicole Bucher. In addition to the items sold in the stores, Nicole and Isaac give back to the community through various fundraisers. “We have a fundraising program that allows local organizations to raise money through fudge pretzels and cinnamon glaze nuts. And we also did, we brought back a bunch of events. And so we have four large free community events throughout the year and one is our Easter egg hunt. Santa Claus comes to the store. We also have a pumpkin party and a s'mores event in our store, and those are all free to the public, “said Isaac Bucher. For their 50th anniversary they're working on a mural and are looking for the community's support. “I'm working with an artist right now. I am a big proponent of community arts, and we're working on a mural that our customers will be able to help us paint and we're going to install it on our property. And it's all going to be based on my grandfather and his dream he had. His mind was full of colorful notions, so it'll definitely be colorful and pay homage to what he's built, “said Nicole Bucher.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

You know how it goes—another day, another haunting! In this episode, things get seriously spooky as we dive deep into one of the most terrifying hauntings ever—The Smurl Family Possession! You've heard of haunted houses, but this demonic case from Pennsylvania is terrifying, malevolent and down right frightful. The Smurl Family was tormented by a dark, malevolent entity that took over their home, turning their lives into a nightmare filled with violent levitations, eerie whispers, and full-on attacks. The hauntings escalated and after blessings by the local priest proved insufficient, Janet Smurl sought the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren (yes, those Warrens from The Conjuring) to investigate. But even the famous demonologists couldn't guarantee safety in this possession saga that gets darker and more twisted by the minute. Will the Smurl family make it out of this haunting alive, or are they destined to battle demons forever? On a lighter side, we're also sharing some fun personal paranormal experiences, including our unplanned matching pajama moment (hello, one brain cell) and our witchy adventure at Deadwick's Emporium in Portsmouth, NH. From tea leaf readings by Jezmina, a Romani fortune-teller to creepy ghost tours of the town's haunted streets.
