In the tenth episode of the Voices of JHIL Podcast, we are joined by Kate Parlett, who is a barrister at Twenty Essex in London and specializes in public international law and international arbitration. Together we discuss her 2008 article, “The PCIJ's Opinion in Jurisdiction of the Courts of Danzig. Individual Rights under Treaties,” published in JHIL 10(1) 2008, 119–145. Analyzing the advisory opinion given by the PCIJ in the Jurisdiction of the Courts of Danzig in 1928, Parlett explores some of the conflicting interpretations it has brought to the fore. Join in as we debate the ways in which the international legal system engages with the rights and obligations of individuals and how it adapts in response to specific issues.Guest:Kate ParlettBarrister at Twenty Essex, London, specializing in public international law and international arbitrationhttps://www.twentyessex.com/people/kate-parlett/Host:Dr. Raphael Schäferhttps://www.mpil.de/en/pub/institute/personnel/academic-staff/rschaefe.cfmMusic: Serge Quadrado Music – Cinematic JazzLesFM – Acoustic Guitar Indie Background Music for VideosSamuelFrancisJohnson – Lifting GuitarMr Pleasure – BurnishedBronzeFind us on Social Media: https://linktr.ee/jhil_rhdi

Sometimes they aim big. A comic. A cartoon. A toyline. Video games. And sometimes that crashes like the Hindenburg. Failed Franchises! That’s what the boys are talking about this week. A slew of bad comics, mediocre toys and forgettable films. Some of them even had an ok aspect, but they just aimed too high. From Jim Lee’s Wildcats, to Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy and a few other gems (or crystals) in the mix. Crystar the Crystal Warrior and Bucky O’ Hare anyone? And somehow we talk about Glenn Danzig and Billy Zane because why the hell not!?!? Direct Download: MP3

Regarding S9E20, the live Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show for 14th of May 2026, could not be recorded due to me being in the hospital, having wisdom teeth out, and not getting home in time to be able to do the show. I stitched together (excuse the pun) three of the latest one-hour TSORR Turbo shows that take place on Bulldogs Radio for an hour every Friday.  I hope it will suffice for this week.  Usually I would record up front but we've had Cat 8 storms in the Western Cape and no power for 7 out of the last 10 days.  There is not enough sun to charge the solar for a 3 hour show and keep the household running.  However, there is plenty of good music here just minus the usual Thursday night features like the Diabolical Challenge and Rock and Metal Time Machine.  I'll be back to normal for S9E21.  Artists featured:  Volbeat, Triumph, Van Halen, W.A.S.P, Danzig, Judas Priest, Texas Hippie Coalition, Smith / Kotzen, U2, Cold Chisel, The Gaslight Anthem, The Clash, Tesla, Metallica, Judas Priest, ACDC, The Sweet, Buckcherry, Airbourne, Iron Maiden, Foghat, Cold Chisel, Nazareth, Neil Young, Blue Scream, Parkway Drive, Ozzy Osbourne, Piet Botha & Jack Hammer, Joe Bonamassa, Led Zeppelin, James Reyne, Thin Lizzy, Dave Hause, Motörhead, The Lazys, Van Halen, Oasis, Judas Priest, Megadeth, The Professionals, The UninvitedThe Story of Rock and Roll.  TSORR - Your one-stop shop for Rock

They reflect on their initial mindset when the podcast began, the process of trial and error to perfect format and workflows, and podcasts that influenced this one. They talk about meeting listeners and subscribers "in the wild." They ponder the question of whether there is an end in sight for the podcast. They reflect on 15 years of Night Demon history.

Arthur Schopenhauer: The Life and Thought of Philosophy's Greatest Pessimist by David Bather Woods An engaging biography of one of the most influential Western philosophers and a thought-provoking exploration of how to live with Arthur Schopenhauer's pessimism.Arthur Schopenhauer (1788–1860) almost wasn't one of the greatest philosophers of the nineteenth century. Born in the Free City of Danzig to a family of shipping merchants, he was destined for a life of imports and exports until his father died in a suspected suicide. After much deliberation, the young Schopenhauer invested his inheritance in himself and his philosophical vocation. But the long road to recognition was a difficult one, with Schopenhauer spending all but the last decade of his life in total obscurity. Yet his ideas and style went on to influence great thinkers, including Friedrich Nietzsche, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Sigmund Freud, as well as artists such as the composer Richard Wagner and writers Marcel Proust, Thomas Mann, Samuel Beckett, and many more.A singular and remarkably influential thinker, Schopenhauer is usually described as an extreme pessimist. He questioned the purpose of existence in a world where pain and suffering are inescapable and happiness is all too brief. In this engaging philosophical biography, David Bather Woods reevaluates Schopenhauer's pessimism in the context of his life experiences, revealing the philosopher's relentless fascination with the world and making a case for his contemporary relevance. Bather Woods weaves together Schopenhauer's ideas with the story of how he came to be, including such topics as love, loneliness, morality, politics, gender, sexuality, death, suicide, fame, and madness. In doing so, this book answers some of life's most challenging questions about how to deal with pain and loss, and how to live with ourselves and each other.Despite his pessimistic outlook on human existence, Schopenhauer didn't give up on life. Rather, he recognized that the question of how to live becomes even more pressing, and he worked to provide an answer. Bather Woods shows how Schopenhauer's life informed his ideas and how they still resonate today. David Bather Woods is associate professor of philosophy at the University of Warwick. He is coeditor with Timothy Stoll of The Schopenhauerian Mind. He has contributed chapters to The Proustian Mind, Schopenhauer's Moral Philosophy, and The Palgrave Schopenhauer Handbook. Morteza Hajizadeh is a Ph.D. graduate in English from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Recorded on the fly during art fair week, live at NADA, this conversation with Dan Attoe moves from metal-kid origin stories to Zen meditation, daily practice, tattooing, landscape painting, and the unexpected turn toward writing a horror novel. Duncan opens with a personal note: a Dan Attoe painting has been hanging in his home for 22 years, a wedding gift that quietly embedded itself into the fabric of his life, which frames the conversation, and traces Attoe's arc from rural Idaho and northern Minnesota outsider to one of the most recognizable painters of his generation. Attoe talks about the seven-year run of making a painting every weekday, a discipline that functioned less as a productivity hack and more as a survival strategy. What began as wild, sex-and-drugs-and-rowdy-party imagery rooted in imagined social worlds gradually shifted toward the meditative landscapes he's now known for. These aren't observed sites but constructed psychic spaces, built from memory, attention, and what he calls a process of "composting" experience. Zen practice, daily drawing, and tattooing form a three-part studio structure that keeps the work in motion. Learning to tattoo on his own body sharpened his attention to contrast, permanence, and empathy, feeding directly back into the paintings. Along the way we get patches, skate culture, Methodist guilt, Barry McGee installations, Walker Art Center bookstore theory dives, and the long road from being told to abandon heavy-metal imagery to fully embracing it as the engine of a mature practice. The conversation closes on writing: how Stephen King, the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and decades of accumulated art-world experience led Attoe to channel theory, narrative, and lived history into a horror novel. It's a talk about attention, energy, and letting the work tell you what it needs to become. In this episode, I talk with Josh Lazie, a former bassist for Danzig, to talk about a reality many of us live with but rarely name: the persistent sense that something is missing. For years, he tried to fill that void with music, drugs, success, and the constant noise of the rock-and-roll lifestyle. For a time, those things worked. Eventually, they didn't. We talk honestly about what that world gave him, what it cost him, and the moment he realized that nothing he was chasing would ever make him whole. We explore the restlessness beneath addiction and ambition, the fear of stillness, and why silence can be more confronting than chaos. Now a catechumen in the Orthodox Church, he reflects on how faith didn't simply distract him from emptiness, but began to heal it—through discipline, repentance, and a reorientation of what it means to live fully. This week we discuss everything From The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, to the attack on Poland. And how he defeated France so easilly, the Simultanious attack on Demark, and Norway. The evacuation of Dunkirk, The Battle Of Britain, and much, much more. This week on "Well That Aged Well". With "Erlend Hedegart". Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/well-that-aged-well. Wendell Willkie accused FDR in 1940 of preparing to send America into a world war. Strangely, Adolf Hitler said in 1938 that if Churchill came to power, he would “immediately start a new world war.” Few would dispute that the British conspired, at least with the Poland war guarantee, to drive Germany to war with rejection of its negotiations over Danzig. If not that, Churchill's fear of an economically superior German state. Likewise, FDR supplied weapons and ships to the British, instituted a draft, and prepared for war long before Poland. Furthermore, he strangled Japan economically until they had no other choice, on top of western stagnation for negations, to respond. The end result of German and Japanese aggression is his-story, but what cultivated such conditions? That is the “back door to war” proposal.*The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. On March 20th, 1995, the Tokyo subway system was flooded with sarin nerve gas in a coordinated terrorist attack by the religious cult Aum Shinrikyō. Led by the charismatic new-age guru, Shoko Asahara, the well-funded and technologically ambitious Aum organization manufactured and deployed chemical weapons in an attempt to bring about the end of the world. In the chaos that followed, 13 people were killed, thousands were injured, and the international community shuddered at the possibility of future attacks by fringe political groups.    SOURCES: Amarasingam, A. (2017, April 5). A history of sarin as a weapon. The Atlantic.  Cotton, Simon. “Nerve Agents: What Are They and How Do They Work?” American Scientist, vol. 106, no. 3, 2018, pp. 138–40.  Danzig, Richard; Sageman, Marc; Leighton, Terrance; Hough, Lloyd; Yuki, Hidemi; Kotani, Rui; Hosford, Zachary M.. The Misfits were truly unique. Scary. Violent. Angry. Nihilistic. These words can easily describe not only their music, but also the band as people, particularly frontman Glenn Danzig. Rumored to have been arrested for grave robbery, locked up abroad and inciting riots here in the States, the Misfits blazed a path of annihilation trading on fictional B-movie and scandal rag imagery to create one of the most enduring cult followings of all time and combating the very real sense of alienation that fueled Danzig's creativity and violent behavior.
