The instrument described within is not what most people today would picture when they hear guitar. Instead of the six stringed Romantic or Spanish guitar - the direct ancestor to today's classical and steel stringed instruments - the instrument described is what is now known as an English or Scottish guitar. This instrument had six courses of strings, but was a smaller teardrop shaped instrument strung with metal wire and tuned in open tunings. It is the ancestor to and most closely resembles the modern cittern or German waldzither. With its early wire strings and open tunings it was less suited to the more harmonically complex and delicate music played on the gut strung Spanish instrument. Nevertheless, it enjoyed widespread use as an instrument for popular and folk music. The ‘Instructions' portion of the text is relatively brief. It explains the tuning of the instrument (an open C major chord) and a few rudimentary techniques. Interestingly it describes a simple strumming technique and also suggests an alternating plucking with the thumb and forefinger, a common technique on the lute and other early stringed instruments now known as ‘thumb under' that approximates the effect of a plectrum. The musical selections themselves are mostly presented in simple settings. The music is provided in staff notation, rather than the tablature more commonly used for stringed instruments of the era. All of the music is transposed to C to fit the open chord tuning of the instrument. The texture is simple, mostly simple monophonic melody line with the odd open string drone or strummed open string chord for emphasis, when harmonically appropriate. In all but a few instances the music only calls on the player to strike notes on immediately adjacent strings, most often in melodic parallel thirds or a melody over an open drone string. There is none of the counterpoint, moving basslines, or harmonic figuration that is typical of Baroque or Romantic guitar repertoire. These factors along with the popular tunes suggests to me that the music was intended for an amateur audience and intended to be strummed as much as plucked. One could view the tutor as analogous to modern commercial ukulele books full of popular and folk tunes in simple arrangements. The various Moorish tunes are interesting and of particular note. They are all extremely short and simple with a strong pastoral sound of open ringing intervals evocative of hunting horns and reveilles, perhaps intended to conjure the image of the trumpets popularly associated with the military bands of the Ottoman Empire. In light of the above notes on the instrument itself, I have played the selected tunes on a modern steel string acoustic guitar, with a mix of pick and thumb and forefinger as appropriate. Voices compete, and we live among the noise. And it's not just others speaking over each other—our own minds can be filled with noise that make the voice of God inaudible. If we're going to live in the way of wisdom, we have to know how to hear it, how to listen to the right voices and sources, and how to quiet all the distractions vying to pull us away. The people who Jesus calls "blessed" in the Sermon on the Mount may surprise us. It's the poor in spirit. The mourning and the meek. Those who long for righteousness. Our culture defines blessedness in a lot of ways, but Jesus came to define His kingdom, which is upside down from everything we know of this world. So, who is really blessed? It might seem like an unusual choice for a show named Southern Songs and Stories to focus on a group with all of its members being from Canada save for one American. But the roots of The Band go back to a roster of musicians from Arkansas, which included their drummer who hailed from the tiny town of Marvell, Levon Helm. The story of how all the Southerners in Levon's first band Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks evolved into The Band is a story in itself, and is summarized in this episode.Beyond the Arkansas connection, The Band's music was firmly rooted in forms that originated in the South, like blues and country. In a parallel with The British Invasion, The Band held up a mirror to the spirit of music of artists who preceded them from another place, reinvigorating those traditions through their own success. In this episode, we welcome Armando Bellmas of the music newsletter Eclectico and public radio WNCW, and Rob Turner, a fellow Osiris Media colleague who co-hosts Inside Out with Turner and Seth, both of whom dig deep into The Band and their song “Chest Fever”, an enigmatic song that will come into at least a little bit better focus once your hear their takes on it here on Southern Songs and Stories. It is not WITHIN US to rescue ourselves. It is not AROUND US as if circumstances could save us. It is not ABOVE US because we have no ability on our own to reach upward for our rescue. It is TO US."For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."Isaiah 9:6Support the show (http://bit.ly/2NZkdrC)
One of the scariest journeys you could ever embark on is the one of discovering who you truly are. We're faced with so many different demands and expectations that it's quite simple to become someone we aren't or don't want to be. The journey of discovering who you are is challenging and complex. But it all starts with realizing that in order to find yourself, you have to realize it's not about you. True self-awareness is found in a true awareness of God. Whether it be through a personal or cultural crises or vulnerability, the Lord guides us to self-awareness through Him alone.Becoming self-aware is essential, and it's only attainable through a deeper intimacy and awareness of our God.Do you know who you truly are?Support the show (http://bit.ly/2NZkdrC)

People keep moving out, Baltimore is now at a “Century Low” in population. While other cities are seeing an uptick, DC, Philly, and Boston; like Randy Newman wrote, “the city is dying, and we don't know why. Crime, lack of jobs, visual hopelessness and despair are a couple reasons for the mass exit, stage left. That is why I thought of this segment, “Leaving Baltimore”. I actually wanted to have a long form hour and a half special segment on this topic, but for now 14 mins will do for now. Many times our lives are wonderful and all is perfect. But there are moments when the hardships of life hit us unexpectedly with intensity. In moments like these it feels as if winter has come inside our souls to dwell within us. Anxiety and depression is the pandemic that has been ravaging our communities long before we could remember, and its wrath is nowhere close to diminishing. As our world grows darker and we face more uncertainty, it becomes easier for us to sink into despair. Can things ever get better? Is there hope and freedom from anxiety and depression? When rewatching a sci-fi movie from decades ago, it's often hilarious how the future and technology is assumed to evolve. 1997's "The Fifth Element" seems to intentionally lean into that hard, as the technology appears to have been developed by someone from the early 80's interpretation of what the future might be. Join us as we take a trip to planet Fhloston to save the universe and admire everything Ruby Rhod.----------Movie DetailsDirected by Luc Besson, who co-wrote the screenplay with Robert Mark Kamen. This film stars Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Mila Jovovich, Ian Holm, and Chris Tucker.Budget of $90mil, made roughly $264mil in the box officeCurrently a 7.7 on IMDb----------Ko-fi Break Shout Out - Macherie Bee - https://ko-fi.com/macheriebee - Currently going through a 100 days of painting exercise to hone their craft! Our biggest donation for our fundraiser for the Make A Wish foundation was from one of our best friends of the show, Derek! He got to choose our first review of 2021 and he selected 1999's American Drama, "Fight Club". We discuss the darker side of this film and how the general public missed the point. We also talk about the lengths that the crew went to create this incredibly artistic film with some amazing performances. Derek joins us for our rewatch discussion and shares why he loves this movie. This is the first review we've done in our new format, which sees a return of our Nostalgia and Rewatch reviews in the same episode. www.patreon.com/artistdecoded When a musical ensemble chooses to self-title an album mid-career, it usually signifies their conviction that they’ve struck upon the motherlode, hit the jackpot, stepped up, and generally arrived at a point they’ve always strived for but never quite attained. Coming from GoGo Penguin at this stage in the game, it’s quite a bold statement: the instrumental trio from Manchester, England have fielded plaudits and rave reviews for inspiration and originality at every turn since 2013, when they settled on their dream line-up of Chris Illingworth (piano), Rob Turner (drums), and Nick Blacka (bass). Fusing jazz, classical and electronic influences (amongst others) with a thirst for innovation, they’ve been garlanded as makers of one of the Mercury Prize album of the year (in ’14), and have enjoyed success on record and in the live arena matched by precious few vocal-free groups post-millennium. After that prestigious Mercury nomination for 2014’s v2.0 album, Chris, Nick, and Rob worked hard, consolidating their musical bond across a further two albums, which were written and recorded while juggling hectic touring commitments. For GoGo Penguin – their fourth album together (and the third to be released by the legendary Blue Note label) – they decided to jump off the rollercoaster and devote the majority of their working time in 2019 to pushing at the limits of their music. “In the past, we'd have to get in the studio and finish the album in what felt like three days. This time we had six months of writing, and two weeks of recording, so everyone had a lot more time to contribute to each track. There was more experimentation, trying things out and often throwing them away. As a result, the album is more sophisticated. We had quite simple lives in the past. We were younger, so there wasn't so much drama, and there hadn’t been so many important events in our lives that fed into the music. This time, there's a lot more facing the realities of becoming older, and mortality, and watching people that you care about being very close to death. At the same time, Chris became a dad. The longer you live, the more complicated your reality becomes, so we felt our music had to reflect that.” - Rob Turner (GoGo Penguin) Topics Discussed In This Episode: Emotions while writing the newest GoGo Penguin album Personality conveyed through music and art The positive and negative dualities of life Conflicting emotions Spirituality Personal Philosophies “The Overview Effect” Empathy GoGo Penguin’s desire to be “genreless” Self-imposed limitations and creative limitations imposed by ourselves The state of music Breaking away from boundaries within your art Conformity and intentionality behind the composition Chris’s background as a classical musician Finding inspiration Reverting back to one’s child-like state Driving force Examining one’s self, so that others are positively affected Being present-minded Being the master of your own work www.artistdecoded.com www.instagram.com/gogo_penguin www.gogopenguin.co.uk

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."The Bible is God's very own words to us. It's supernatural, transformational, and purposeful for every part of life. But if we're honest with ourselves, we often set aside His words and allow other voices to grab a hold of our attention and hearts. This is the pilot episode of a new Inside Out wTnS series which finds hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner focusing on the Georgia music world. The podcasts’ goal is to shine a light on all things related to the Georgia music industry - and the people, artists and supporters who make it all happen. In this first episode, we take a look at how Collectiv and Beware Presents were able to put on large-scale concerts at The Atlanta Motor Speedway during a global pandemic. We focus on the pair of Umphrey’s McGee concerts which took place in October (one of which was almost canceled due to tornado warnings). First, Eric Von Haessler of WSB’s “Von Haessler Doctrine shares insight about the Speedway itself, as well as about how his interest in NASCAR was rekindled when he moved to Atlanta in the late 90s. Then, we dive into the preparation, execution, and enjoyment of this unique event from multiple angles. The Site/Event Director (Kit Blanchard) explains about how many folks had to be on board with each other to make the shows happen, particularly in the immediate wake of tornado warnings on Saturday. We also hear of the experiences of a Social Distancing Ambassador (Nicholas Woodruff), and a long-time music fan who traveled from Colorado to see the Umphrey’s McGee, “Drive-in At The Speedway” concert (Steve Homer). The episode ends with Jake Cinninger of Umphrey’s McGee giving his thoughts on the band’s experience, and how it all looked and felt from their position. Sprinkled throughout the episode are thoughts and feedback from the hosts, who attended the first of these two concerts. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The instrument described within is not what most people today would picture when they hear guitar. Instead of the six stringed Romantic or Spanish guitar - the direct ancestor to today’s classical and steel stringed instruments - the instrument described is what is now known as an English or Scottish guitar. The ‘Instructions’ portion of the text is relatively brief. It explains the tuning of the instrument (an open C major chord) and a few rudimentary techniques. Interestingly it describes a simple strumming technique and also suggests an alternating plucking with the thumb and forefinger, a common technique on the lute and other early stringed instruments now known as ‘thumb under’ that approximates the effect of a plectrum. Rob Turner is different from me as you’ll hear in this interview. He served our country in the Army, then became a police officer in Virginia. Following the murder of George Floyd this summer, he released an episode on his podcast Fat, Drunk and Stupid about that was raw, apologetic, and extremely vulnerable about the incident from a police perspective. I really wanted to know more about his background - specifically his path from Army to policing - so I reached out to see if he’d be willing to talk. He was.
Join us this week as we have special guest Rob Turner of the FAT, DRUNK, AND STUPID podcast. We discuss about his hometown, life in the military, computer coding, and his Podcast! https://anchor.fm/fds-podcast7 (Fat, Drunk, and Stupid podcast) Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE, rate and review, we love those five star reviews!
