Two guys talk and play music... for the kids.
[said in College Jerome voice] Get Comfortably Numb with Reid and Jerome!
Wow, was this a fun one! Guest stars, inappropriateness, bad singing... its all here, and means only one thing. It's St Patrick's Day y'all. Jerome finally got to record this one, and we had yet another excuse to drink and revel in our distant heritage. The Pogues, Jerry Garcia, The Kings of Connaught, Carbon Leaf, and others make this our funnest Podcast (I'm still drunk). Enjoy!
They say listening to new music fights off Alzheimer's. So because Jerome is older than Reid, we try to pick some songs neither of us has ever heard. Jerome picks songs from North Cakalaky's own The Whalewatchers, Appalachian Soul pioneers the Trainjumpers, and my new fave band, The Elovaters. Reid picks a Brandt Bjork rocker and a lounge-y tune by seminal Drone Metal band Boris. Please bear with the first half of this one. I forgot to plug the mics into the computer and the audio is captured through the computer mic, which makes Jerome sound less handsome than he normally does. #Appalachian Soul #Boris #TheWhalewatchers #TheTrainjumpers #TheElovaters #BrandtBjork
Self explanatory. Send feedback to soundsopinionated@gmail.com. #Idaho, #Bahrain, #Toto, #thePowerStation, #LedZeppelin, #theCult, #sayingyouregoingtoseethecultthennotgoingtogoseethecult
We were brand new, as Jerome says.... we were just kids. Almost two years ago we came together in Jerome's basement and used an iPhone to record and its pretty rough. So fun tho as we just winged it. No real topic, but Reid chose The Green Manalishi with the Two Pronged Crown written by a tortured Peter Green and first recorded by a fledgling Fleetwood Mac, then popularized by Judas Priest, and then made even heavier and sludgy-er by the great Grunge & Stoner Rock progenitor, the Melvins, my favorite band. Then Jerome plays three songs (Bell Bottom Blues, Layla, and Keep on Growing) from one of his favorite bands, Derek and The Dominos (Derek is Eric Clapton for those who don't know). Please send us comments, critiques, show ideas, etc. to soundsopinionated@gmail.comThanks and Enjoy!Reid and Jerome
One of Jerome's favorite things to do drunk and on dates (with some obviously lucky ladies). Some fave songs we love to sing along with by Counting Crows, Steve Miller Band, Elton John, and DC's only, Go-Go greats... Junk Yard Band! Speaking of great, John Moreland is a great guy.
Jerome loves the holiday themed show, so for Valentines Day Show (#2), he chooses Mr. Sexual Healing himself, Marvin Gaye (I mean c'mon, ladies would throw their underwear at him at concerts), a peaceful Jakob Dylan / Norah Jones number, and a fun Mariachi El Bronx tune. Reid goes guilty pleasure with the all time soft rock greats the Carpenters, a "splendid" Chicago ballad, and the probably the best love song ever written by Hall and Oates. Happy Valentines Day? (again)
It happens when you get older. You re-hear music from days gone by, and say to yourself, "Self? I forgot all about this song! It's as good as I remember!" The best is when you feel like you're hearing it for the first time. We've all burned out on many bands and albums, and at some point you stop "hearing" it. Like David Gilmore said about Dark Side of the Moon; "I've heard it so many times, it's hard to appreciate it. It would be quite something I think to hear it again for the first time." I agree. It's really awesome when you "hear" something again for the first time. So Reid picks some Red Hot Chili Peppers songs from his youth, and Jerome throws in some Billy Idol, Blues Traveler, and a Louis Armstrong/Count Basie number.
Well, it happened. Jerome has now officially popped his cork. Our best show ever, hands down. Fu Manchu and Black Crowes come in at some point, but the real showcase here is the genius/insanity line Jerome walks without fear or consequence. The world will understand eventually.
The Misfits, Dire Straits, Black Sabbath, and the Dead Kennedys all can make some scary sounds. So do Jerome and Reid, but usually not intentionally. Enjoy!
Jerome kills it this episode. So many funky horns from Herbie Hancock, the Budos Band, and Flea and the RHCPs. Not sure what Reid was doing, choosing Rush, Led Zeppelin, and the Minutemen. But god bless 'Merica, please send us a message via soundsopinionated@gmail.com so we know you're alive and care.
Feared by parents and politicians. Beloved by misanthropes and anarchists. From the garage banks of the 60's like The Sonics and the Stooges, to the eclectic masters like the Clash and Fugazi, Jerome and Reid finally delve into one of their favorite genres. Enjoy, and please let us know what you think of the show! Send any message at all to soundsopinionated@gmail.com
Sometimes better than the original, sometimes not. How most bands earn their chops, playing the songs of others, and Jerome and Reid pick some of their favorites. Send in comments or suggestions to soundsopinionated@gmail.com so we can get better and maybe you can help pick future songs and/or show topics.
What do Beethoven and Tom Petty have in common? Only Reid and Jerome's weddings.
Jerome doesn't even know what Country Music is, and Reid, again, shows he's the all time expert. Hank Williams, Kenny Rodgers, Blaze Foley, Willie Nelson are just a few of the best Country Music has produced over the years, and here are a few choice cuts. And yes Carol (my crazy sister), because you asked for it, Cake is here too. Carol loves Cake everyone. And big shout out to all our listeners in India! Enjoy!
Well, since it's for the kids, Jerome and Reid pick a couple they think kids should hear, whether they want to or not. Not because we want them to like it, but because we want them to know it's there. A who's-who of musical icons such as John Lennon, Bob Dylan, the Who, and of course the Butthole Surfers.
The Killers and The Foo Fighters make us less flabby and more strong. But not more articulate.
Ah, love songs. All time #1 choice for musicians everywhere, every time, and always. Jerome is all soft and gooey for them, Reid is not. But Reid chooses way better songs to play as usual. Check back soon for your chance to buy T-shirts so we can license the songs, so we don't have to pay for them ourselves.
Well, it's that time again. Reid's slight cynicism is converted by Jerome's infectious excitement for the Mother of All Holidays. Apt given that ol' Bobby D and Joey Ramone, both raised Jewish, make the cut creating some of our fave Christmas songs. Well, that was weird.
Grunge, rap, and indie were all kinda boomin' at the time. Twas' a good year. Reid and Jerome pick the best songs from that year, and we know cuz' we lived then and listened to all the songs published in that year... but not 1993. We were busy in 1993.#SoundsOpinionated #RoadTrip #1994
Much revered, and talented as all get out, the King was aptly named. Whether you're a young, skinny, dry Elvis fan or an old, pudgy, sweaty Elvis fan, we pick a couple from all eras. Thank you very much.
We've all taken road trips. Young and with friends, or old(er) with dumb kids, music is kinda integral. Jerome picks a smooth American jammer, and Reid picks a couple rockers cuz when you road trip you rock and I'm more righter than Jerome.
From Dolly Parton, to Linda Ronstadt, to Bonnie Raitt, to Janis Joplin, and on and on.... chicks rock just as well as the dudes. Jerome picks a new sleeper from the Indie ranks and Reid picks an older staple of rock. We could do 800 more shows on this topic.
First show with a fatalistic topic... funeral songs. Reid picks an epic classic that both he and an English Knight wants to be played at his funeral, and Jerome picks a thoughtful, tear jerker to be played while people dance at his funeral... in 2065.
