There's swearing. There's nostalgia. And there's the kind of playlist that makes you want to dig out your old plaid pants and jump in a mosh pit. Arguably one of the most notoriously named bands in rock history, Butthole Surfers made a career out of upending the establishment and irritating the easily annoyed. Their albums were abrasive yet tuneful, much like their live performances. Rising to the challenge of bottling these audible antics, Sunset Blvd. is prepping the release of Butthole Surfer's third live album, LIVE AT THE LEATHER FLY on May 9, 2025. Unearthed in the archives of Butthole history, the 21-track performance's origins are shrouded in mystery. The “where” or “when” it was recorded is debatable, but the band have created a mythos surrounding it. "Back in the ‘80s, Gibby [Haynes, vocalist/guitarist] used to fantasize about a nightclub called The Leather Fly. He wanted it to have a stuffed leather fly hanging in front of it,” reminisces Paul Leary (guitar/vocals/”art master”) about the illusory venue that this show was recorded. Quince episodios. Cincuenta discos. She recounts attending the Radio 104 Fest and vividly describes how Everclear was not her favorite but ended up being the main act she saw due to time restrictions. A humorous and memorable moment emerges from a misunderstanding that led to her attending a performance by Mono of Japan instead of the expected European band Mono, a life-changing encounter that profoundly influenced her musical tastesGiuliana also narrates her experiences at the Halloween Industrial Music Fest during Hurricane Sandy, where she saw numerous notable acts like Author & Punisher and Theologian in an incredibly intense, weather-challenged environment. Her story culminates in recounting the remarkable Sunn O show, a visceral and intense performance where the sheer power of the sound and visuals led to a memorable audience connection.Throughout the discussion, Giuliana elaborates on her creative process, revealing how she and her collaborators use data sonification and visual cues to guide their live performances and improvisations. Yes, Dot Hacker's lead vocalist Josh Klinghoffer played guitar with Red Hot Chili Peppers for 10 years - trigger warning for some - but before forming in 2008 all four members were already established musicians, recording and touring with an impressive list of respected artists including: Beck, Gnarls Barkley, PJ Harvey, The Butthole Surfers and Broken Bells amongst many others. This week's guest, musician/audio engineer Layla Moheimani, fell instantly under the spell of the band and their lush, architectural-yet-still-rocking debut release 'Inhibition'.  Songs discussed in this episode: What Red Hot Chili Peppers Sound Like To People Who Don't Like Red Hot Chili Peppers - There I Ruined It; Unreachable - John Frusciante; Billie Holiday - Warpaint; The Afterglow - John Frusciante & Josh Klinghoffer; Going On - Gnarls Barkley; Biblical Violence - Hella; Overpour - E V Kain; Order/Disorder, Idleidolidyl, Eye Opener, Discotheque, Be Leaving, The Earth Beneath, Inhibition - Dot Hacker; Mystic Lady - T-Rex; The Wit of the Staircase - Dot Hacker; Dreams of a Samurai - Red Hot Chili Peppers; Quotes, Puncture - Dot Hacker; Fade Into You (Mazzy Star cover) - Layla Joon

Bands scoring a hit with a single that doesn't sound much like the rest of the album is not unusual. Blur, Sugar Ray, the Butthole Surfers, Nada Surf, and more had hits that might have confused buyers when the bought the respective albums, and the same goes for Faithless, and their 1998 album Sunday 8 PM. Thanks to the uptempo house hit "God Is A DJ," the band gained fans on both sides of the Atlantic. However, aside from one other track, the rest of the album runs at half that speed, mixing electronic downtempo and soul sampled trip-hop. It results in an uneven album that feels more like a collection of really good singles instead of a cohesive musical statement, but the highs, including a stirring vocal performance by Boy George, make the record one worth checking out.   Songs In This Episode Intro - The Garden 20:19 - Why Go? 32:02 - Hour of Need 36:01 - Rock That Doesn't Roll / Dope Nostalgia podcast promos 39:03 - Bring My Family Back 42:12 - God Is A DJ Outro - Killer's Lullaby   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. You know when you take a family on a road trip and the number one rule is avoid vampires? Obviously, the desert is the place to go. Not anymore. Desmond and Tom dig into Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat. This comedy horror western is chock full of nonsense to talk about, so enjoy the review. Then Desmond comes back to go solo on a Dread Media Top 5 Horror Oddities from the Late 80s/early 90s. Songs included: "Blood Will Have Blood" by Knocked Loose, "Life After Sundown" by Ghoultown, "Creep in the Cellar" by Butthole Surfers, and "To Flow Through Ashen Hearts" by Ulcerate. Barulho mesmo, quem fez foi Yago. Na trilha desse episodio, usamos Pavement com Range Life, Butthole Surfers com Goofy's Concern e Last Exit com My Balls/Your Chin. Carlos brought Sonic Youth, Big Black, Scratch Acid, The Butthole Surfers and little ol' DInosaur Jr to Europe for the first time in the 1980s. He -asked- to be interviewed for RAW Impressions! He's a fan! How crazy is that? Lou and Adelle rush to make it happen, Adelle in the very early morning stateside, and Lou under a windswept festival tent in Hulst, Holland. Dinosaur's first U.S. tour opening for Sonic Youth, Lou's near audition for Swans and how Scratch Acid were pleasant houseguests are discussed, among many other things.join our Substack for an ever-expanding archive of pod-related content!https://barlowfamilygeneral.substack.com Hosted on Acast.
