Journey back to the summer of 1970 as we explore the legendary Isle of Wight Festival, where music lovers converged on a small island off England's southern coast for five days of extraordinary performances. What makes this festival particularly special is how well it was documented – allowing us to experience these historic performances through recordings and film footage decades later. From Chicago's early hits to The Who's powerful performance of "Tommy," the festival showcased artists at pivotal moments in their careers. Jim Morrison's haunting performance with The Doors stands as one of his final shows. Meanwhile, Miles Davis demonstrated how jazz could captivate rock audiences, and Jimi Hendrix delivered unforgettable performances just weeks before his death. We'll also transport you to the 1995 HORDE Festival in Atlanta, a touring concert series that helped bands like The Black Crowes and Blues Traveler reach larger audiences by combining their fan bases. Along the way, we explore summer hits that defined their eras – from KC and the Sunshine Band's disco anthem "Get Down Tonight" to The Kings' double-hit "This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide." We'll also examine how The Cure's 1985 album "Head on the Door" marked their transition to mainstream success with its distinctive sound. These weren't just concerts – they were cultural touchstones that helped define musical movements and create the shared experiences that bind music fans together. Join us as we celebrate the festivals, songs, and albums that shaped rock history and continue to influence how we experience music today.“Music In My Shoes" where music and memories intertwine.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldVisit our Facebook and Instagram pages and spread the word if you enjoy the podcast. The Wolf has had a complicated relationship with The Black Crowes. As a young man, he felt the music industry had conspired to anoint the Crowes as the next big thing in rock. MTV, rock radio, Rolling Stone, etc all seemed to be on the Crowes bandwagon and were shoving them down our throats (or that's what it seemed like). The fact that their first single was a cover and Chris Robinson's cocky attitude just didn't jibe with what our host was looking for in the early 90s. However, after seeing them open for the Grateful Dead in 1995, he bore witness to what a great live band they were. So while he still may have had issues with their front man and his attitude, the fact of the matter were they were the real deal live. But when his idol Jimmy Page joined the Crowes for a tour and eventually released a live album with them, again he was despondent that his biggest guitar hero had taken up with this band he didn't love. BTW - the newly released deluxe edition of them Live at the Greek is a killer Crowes or Zeppelin collectible. in 2024, Aerosmith was supposed to do one final tour and the Black Crowes were slated to open for them. When Aerosmith was forced to cancel the tour, The Wolf found himself more disappointed in missing the Crowes than the last gasp of Aerosmith. So when the Black Crowes came to town as a headliner, The Wolf wasn't going to miss his chance and he wasn't disappointed. Hear him discuss with Action Jackson the band, their show, the power of Chris Robinson's voice, the guitar porn, the stuff he didn't know and the Rolling Stones cover that he wasn't expecting. Producer/bassist Jim Reilley will most likely be remembered as a founding member (along with musical partner Reese Campbell) of seminal folk rock band The New Dylans. Founded in 1986,the band barnstormed the US throughout the 90's and won critical praise from Rolling Stone (who called their songs “offbeat classics”) and virtually every other major music publication and major newspaper. The Village Voice placed the band in the top 5 Ep's of 1986 in their prestigious Pazz and Jop Poll. The band won the hearts and minds of many fans in the then burgeoning AAA American radio format and had several feature spots on important tastemaking radio shows including NPR's All Things Considered, Idiot's Delight with Vin Scelsa, Partridge Family Imp Danny Bonaduce's WLUP show, Mountain Stage, WXPN's World Café and Acoustic Café. Michael Stipe of R.E.M. proclaimed The New Dylans his favorite band of 1986 and Natalie Merchant (of 10,000 Maniacs) would often jump onstage and sing with the band. After 10 years of solid touring often over 175 dates a year sharing stages with many luminaries including (R&R Hall Of Famers) The Band, Reilley moved to Nashville to sign a writing and production deal with Curb Records. As a songwriter, Reilley had over 60 songs recorded by such artists as Hal Ketchum, Sam Bush, Vince Gill, Lauren Daigle, Hillary Scott, Claudia Church, Leann Rimes, Cowboy Crush, Jana Kramer, Jack Ingram, Lila McCann, Carly Pearce, John Cowsill, Vicki Peterson (The Bangles), Tim O'Brien and had a European hit with Danish Rock legend Peter Belli. In this engaging episode restaurateur, music promoter, and local legend Chris 'Shaggy' Davis welcomes Tales From The Green Room and listeners to Day 2 of the 10th annual NOLA Crawfish Festival, a celebration that marries New Orleans' rich musical heritage with its vibrant culinary culture held at The Broadside New Orleans. The episode features an interview with rising star keyboard player/vocalist/singer song-writer, and band leader, 15-year-old River Eckert and his father, Jake Eckert. Father and son reflect on their musical journeys, from River's early days learning jazz and blues to Jake's extensive experience with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and his current gig with The New Orleans Suspects. The conversation, recorded after River's appearance at the NOLA Crawfish Festival and an hour before his next gig playing with George Porter, Jr., delves into the significance of familial legacy in New Orleans music, personal anecdotes about growing up around legendary musicians, and the impact of the city's supportive musical community. A special guest appearance by Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All-Stars and Crawfish Fest stalwart) adds to the rich tapestry of stories, illustrating the unique cultural ecosystem of New Orleans, with Luther revealing the secret to his improvisational skills. Additionally, Shaggy shares his personal history, from boiling crawfish in his backyard to founding Crawfish King (the episode's presenting sponsor along with Cochon King BBQ), and offers insight into the festival's evolution and his friendship with Dave Matthews.Episode Photo Gallery by Chris Applebaum Images – 4/29/25 at The Crawfish Festival, Including Photos from Episode 33 with The Rumble and an upcoming episode with Joe Marcinek and Rick King (NOLA Dead Funk Summit)HIGHLIGHTS To be honest, what I do, what I really get paid to do at the highest level and what I did with Phil Lesh, or what I did with the Black Crowes, or whatever, like high end, high octane stuff, fearless improvisation, I learned at The Maple Leaf. . Johnny (Vidacovich) and George (Porter) taught me how to roll…I'd show up with songs and set lists, but they didn't want that man. They didn't even want songs. They just wanted to improvise for two full sets. And it would scare me to death. But I learned how to do it, man. And that's the real juice.I have a huge debt to the New Orleans culture. -Luther Dickinson on his relationship with New Orleans It's not ever annoying to hang out with older people because they're the ones with the knowledge. I'm my age and my generation's the one who's learning in the present moment. So when I'm around all those guys, it's just I soak up any information that I can possibly get. -River Eckert on being 15 and hanging out with older guys in the music sceneThere's a lot of music in the family. My great-grandmother and great grandfather. My great grandmother was a well-known vaudeville musician, And they were really menstrual types and well known at the time, Goldie Green and Bart Green and that was way back, silent movies, you know. Every department store, every function. That was before sound and movies. So they kind of got going like that. I tracked my grandmother all around and learned that lifestyle. My grandmother said to me before she passed, she said, you know, you got the blessing and the curse!-Jake Eckert on growing up in a musical family.I started just having backyard boils outside of the fairgrounds. I was close with all the New Orleans musicians. I'm lucky to call 'em friends. So I used to say, hey, come play in this backyard…do a cheap ticket, all you can eat, crawfish kind of thing. And we'd get anyone from Anders Osborne to George Porter. It was just always cool. Put food and music together. It's kind of my jam.-Chris “Shaggy” Davis on the origins of the NOLA Crawfish FestivalLINKShttps://www.rivereckert.com/River Eckert YouTube Playlisthttps://neworleanssuspects.com/https://www.facebook.com/nolacrawfishfestivalhttps://www.lutherdickinson.com/https://broadsidenola.com/https://www.mapleleafbar.com/MUSICStack-A-Lee | River Eckert - with George Porter Jr, Terence Higgins, and John FohlRiver Eckert Music YouTube ChannelThe Black Crowes LIVE: Luther Dickinson's 'Ozone Mama' Solo on a Dubreuille Classic livedownloads YouTube Channel Polytoxic w Jake Eckert "Do What You Gotta Do" 4/14/2012 @ Quixotes 400 Watt Room, DenverWspanicbrad YouTube ChannelSPONSOR LINKSNOLA Crawfish King – Seafood & CateringCochon King BBQSpecial thanks to Luther Dickinson, Nick Burlison & Chris Applebaum/Applebaum Images

Growing up in Australia, guitarist Jedd Hughes tells us he dreamed of playing in Vince Gill's band as far back as elementary school. Now, he lives in Nashville and stands next to the man himself on stage night after night. We've invited Jedd to join us on this episode of 100 Guitarists to talk about just what makes Vince's playing so special.Jedd tells us how his dream came true and how he first started playing with Vince. We dig deep into how everybody's favorite country guitarist raises the bar every time he picks up the guitar, how he gets his amazing clean tone, and we take time to appreciate all aspects of his solos—including how he builds them and how he plays such clean bends. As for why his concerts are so long? “He loves to play.”In our current listening segment, we're covering the Black Crowes and Jimmy Page's Live at the Greek box set and a live recording from Burlington, Vermont's Breathwork. Some modern bands—ones like Jack White, Larkin Poe, Greta Van Fleet and Marcus King among others—they are beginning to standout for their exceptional musical talents while still holding onto what has become somewhat of a lost art form. “It's not uncommon that young people are making music that nods to the past,” according to the lead guitarist of one of those bands, Tyler Armstrong of The Band Feel, during the first episode of Season 6 of The Load Out Music Podcast. Only about two years old, The Band Feel evolved out of the now-defunct Alton, Illinois-based band known as Nick Bifano and the Innocents. It has quickly become a dynamic quartet, driven by the partnership of Armstrong and lead vocalist Garrett Barcus. Rounded out by drummer T.J. Steinwart and Kadin Rea on bass guitar, the band has quickly become known for its sizzling performances that pay homage to the classic rock era while adding a modern twist. Most comparisons place the The Band Feel somewhere between Led Zeppelin and The Black Crowes, and indeed, watching Armstrong and Barcus on stage is reminiscent of the chemistry once displayed by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The Band Feel had what Armstrong calls its “coming out party” just after Covid, releasing an EP that was produced by the five-time Grammy-nominated and ASCAP award winning producer, Paul Moak, at The Smokestack in Nashville. The quartet hit the road in support of Dirty Honey last Fall on the “Can't Find The Breaks” tour, playing more 30 markets in theatres across the US. So with the newness of success, Armstrong—who is remarkably quiet and unassuming—is taking it day-by-day, just trying to focus on building a stronger brotherhood with his bandmates. “We're still pretty new to this thing,” he said with great humility. “I think we view ourselves as special but it's always interesting hearing it. The only expectation in this world is to treat someone as good as you can. It goes deeper than my service level statement. With the band the only expectation is that you treat those of us in the band the best you can.” Special indeed. Welcome to Episode 1 of Season 6 of The Load Out Music Podcast with Tyler Armstrong of The Band Feel. You should be hearing a lot about the band in the coming years.
This week on America's Podcast, we hand over the keys to the Pinto to none other than Eric Lussier—let's just hope he doesn't strip the gears before we get to our destination. We're reviewing Kissin' Dynamite's Back With a Bang. Is this album a full-fledged explosion of rock greatness, or does it fizzle out like a damp firecracker? No safety goggles required—we're giving you our unfiltered opinions. Plus, special guest Travis Perrotta joins the chaos, because what's a podcast without a little extra mayhem? And of course, we're bringing the Tracks of the Week: Marc throws down with Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes' "No Speak No Slave." Mooger brings the boom with The Scorpions' "Dynamite." Jerry holds nothing back with Survivor's "I Can't Hold Back." Travis blasts off with Montrose's "Space Station #5." Eric shakes things up with Sunday Riot Club's "Out Of The Sky." Until next time—don't play with dynamite… unless you're ready to blow some speakers #kissindynamite #rock #rockpodcast
