On 31 December 1999, a piece of music started playing in a lighthouse in East London. It's called Longplayer, and it's set to keep going, without repeating, until the year 2999. It was created by Jem Finer from The Pogues, using 234 Tibetan singing bowls. Megan Jones has been to meet Jem Finer, to find out why he wanted to create a one thousand year long musical composition.Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive.
"That's the challenge of the song: he's giving us these people at Christmas and forcing us, in the spirit of the season, to find grace for them. He's channeling the fundamental nature of Christmas." - Dave Kitchen In honour of Bill's brother-in-law, Kurt, we are finally featuring the song that Nick Cave said spoke with "profound compassion to the marginalised and the dispossessed." It's a Christmas song unlike any other. Send us a textThe Back in Time Brothers: A Very 80s Christmas (Originally Heard on URL Radio)Join DJ Paulie and Lou as they turn up the volume and celebrate the greatest toys, movies, and original Christmas music from the tubular 1980s!The chaos begins with Busted! Stupid Criminals at Christmas time, featuring tales of holiday fails. Hear about the woman in a "very revealing elf costume" who pocketed bottles of limited edition Christmas ale at a Cincinnati brewery. We cover the man caught trying to steal upscale lingerie from a busy mall in Philadelphia, claiming he was "helping Santa to deliver the naughty list gifts". Plus, listen to the story of the man offering "relaxing Christmas mistletoe shoulder rubs" before tripping over a decorative reindeer mid-escape. And don't miss the Reno couple caught breaking into a rental cabin wearing nothing but Santa hats and slippers.Next, Todd Snyder's Rock Talk dives into "The Dark Secrets Behind Band-Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas?”. Discover how Bob Geldof essentially "guilddrafted" major stars—including George Michael, Sting, and Phil Collins—into recording the chaotic anthem in a single day in 1984. Find out which lyric Bono "hated" singing (but belted out anyway) and the internal struggles over how the tens of millions raised were actually delivered. The Countdown blasts 12 iconic, original 80s holiday tracks. Get ready for the punk rock snowstorm of The Ramones' "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)" and the haunting storytelling of The Pogues' "Fairy Tale of New York". You'll also hear Queen's emotional rock ballad “Thank God It's Christmas” and the soulful sorrow of Prince's "Another Lonely Christmas". Plus, we drop tracks from XTC (recording secretly as The Three Wise Men) and Run DMC's hip-hop holiday classic "Christmas in Hollis".Finally, Lou and DJ Paulie debate the definitive 80s Christmas Movies, ranking everything from the chaos of Gremlins and Die Hard (Yes, it's a Christmas movie!) to the classics A Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The brothers also dive into 80s toys: the good (the game-changing NES system), the bad (the injury-prone Pogo Ball), and the ugly (the riot-inducing Cabbage Patch Kids and the creepy, talking Teddy Ruxpin).Tune in for the wildest Christmas since "Bing Crosby tap danced with Danny f****** K."!Support the showThanks for listening. Shane MacGowan lived his life as an outsider. He was an Irishman living in England, a troublemaking jug-eared punk with rotten teeth and a voracious appetite for drugs and alcohol. And with his band, The Pogues, he created a powerful synthesis of the traditional music of his homeland and a modern punk attitude. It was this gift for melding the sacred with the profane that led to the creation of one of the finest and most unique Christmas songs ever: "Fairytale of New York." In celebration of the Pogues' 'Fairytale of New York' EP, we take a detailed look at how their classic Christmas single came together. The Pogues originally formed in London in 1982 by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy and Jem Finer. MacGowan had gotten his start playing in the punk band, the Nipple Erectors, and when that band broke up, he began playing in an Irish traditional music style. Gradually, he brought in James Fearnley, Cait O'Riordan and John Hasler to become a sextet. Andrew Ranken replaced John Hasler as they signed with Stiff Records. Their debut album, Red Roses for Me, was released in 1984. For their second album, they added Philip Chevron on guitar and hired Elvis Costello as their producer. Rum Sodomy & the Lash was released in 1985, and they continued working with Costello for the Poguetry in Motion EP, released in 1986. At this point, Cait O'Riordan left the band and they updated the lineup to include Darryl Hunt and Terry Woods. They signed to Island Records and hired Steve Lillywhite to produce their third album. If I Should Fall from Grace with God was eventually released in 1988 and included the Christmas single, “Fairytale of New York.” In this episode, Steve Lillywhite describes working with the Pogues at this pivotal time in their career when they were expanding the lineup and becoming more ambitious with their song structures and arrangements. Despite not having experience recording a traditional folk band, Lillywhite proved to be the right producer for the Pogues at this moment. His input and confidence in the studio led to them splicing two sections of “Fairytale of New York” together and also enlisting his wife Kirsty MacColl to sing the female part in the song. Jem Finer talks about his initial writing process for the song and how he wrote two potential Christmas ideas that his wife Marcia dismissed as being far too sentimental. Her input led to him rethinking the song and writing about a down on their luck couple, inspired by people who lived in their neighborhood in London. Finer describes how Shane MacGowan then took the song and moved the setting to New York City and added some key lines that were taken from real conversations. James Fearnley describes the thrill of recording the opening section with just piano and voice and how he practiced repeatedly to be able to get that part right. He talks about how the song deserved an ambitious string arrangement and so he worked out some ideas on a synthesizer before bringing in Fiachra Trench to help with the orchestration. By taking inspiration from film scores like Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in America and Leonard Bernstein's On the Waterfront, Fearnley talks about wanting to bring a cinematic sound to match the classic American story that was being told. From the song's long gestation period of a few years, to Steve Lillywhite bringing the tapes home and casually asking Kirsty MacColl to sing on it, to the inspiration behind the classic “I could've been someone” line, to the initial disappointment of getting to number 2 in the charts, to the perfect sparring duet partners in Shane and Kirsty, to the anti-Christmas Christmas song that has become timeless, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by legendary producer Steve Lillywhite — the Grammy-winning studio mastermind behind iconic records by U2, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Killers, Peter Gabriel, and many more. Steve talks about the release of a brand-new 4-track EP featuring a completely unreleased live version of "Fairytale of New York" — recorded at Glasgow Barrowlands in December 1987. This historic performance captures the first time The Pogues ever played the song live, and the first time Kirsty MacColl performed it onstage with the band. The EP is released on 12 December. Recorded by Steve himself — producer of the original version and then-husband of Kirsty MacColl — the Barrowlands tape offers a rare window into the early live life of what has become the UK's favourite Christmas song for over a decade. Originally charting at No. 2 in 1987, "Fairytale of New York" has returned to the UK Top 20 every year since 2005. Steve reflects on the making of the classic track, the energy of that unforgettable night in Glasgow, and key moments from across his remarkable career. Listen to Steve Lillywhite discuss the new EP, the legacy of Fairytale of New York, and the stories behind his legendary productions — exclusively on the XS Noize Podcast. From 10th December, platforms must take 'reasonable steps' to stop under-16s from opening accounts and remove accounts that already belong to them. She explains how we got here and updates us on a new legal action being brought to challenge the ban.Cassa Pancho founded Ballet Black in 2001, aged 21, in response to there being no black or Asian women performing in any of the UK's ballet companies. We visited with Sean Griffin on this episode about his forthcoming album, how his process has changed over the years, his supportive wife, and his single “Rocks Off.” Sean Griffin is a veteran singer-songwriter and the charismatic founding frontman of Celtic rock cult favorites The Ruffians. After years fronting rowdy pub stages and raising six kids while running a successful business, Griffin returns with his solo debut — a raucous, reflectivecollection of songs that blend punk energy, folk storytelling, and hook-filled rock melodies. Steeped in Irish tradition and punk rebellion, his music channels the spirit of The Pogues and Joe Strummer, with a voice full of grit, wit, and soul. His new single, “People Are Mad,” is a barroomanthem for chaotic times — rowdy, unfiltered, and ready to raise a glass. Musicians recount the strange and unexpected story behind the making of your favorite albums. The Pogues were born out of the Irish diaspora in London and out of Shane McGowan's love of the downtrodden. The guys welcome a special (and very relevant) guest to discuss gritty vocals, the ulian pipes, and punk energy filtered through traditional music.Check out Stephen's record club here and reach out to him about joining up if you're in Australia: https://www.youtube.com/@shortcutsrecordsJoin our Mailing List here: https://linktr.ee/1001albumcomplaintsEmail us your complaints (or questions / comments) at 1001AlbumComplaints@gmail.comListen to our episode companion playlist (compilation of the songs we referenced on this episode) here:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3Pf64NxZp1IjG3xQKB2Jvo?si=d7e11b6e462e4774Listen to Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash here:https://open.spotify.com/album/5uy9pvgfvVAlZnegK6fPLU?si=Z2bQ2TN4RIq-WrQO8141UgIntro music: When the Walls Fell by The Beverly CrushersOutro music: After the Afterlife by MEGAFollow our Spotify Playlist of music produced directly by us. Sit down everyone as school is back in session. Your teacher for this episode is one of America's best storytellers, Louisiana-based singer/songwriter/fiddler/guitarist Louis Michot. Louis is truly a national treasure, a student as much as he is teacher. In his "day job" he fronts the multiple Grammy winning traditional Cajun band the Lost Bayou Ramblers. Here, Louis returns to For Songs to discuss his latest solo album called Seauxleaux (https://louismichot.bandcamp.com/album/seauxleaux) (pronounced “solo” in Cajun French). This interview, along with his performance on the raw, riveting Seauxleaux, will give you chills, or at least it does for me. We talk about history, the impact of lifelong relationships, and what it means—or doesn't—to be punk rock. So grab a beer, your pencil, and let Louis take you away.
Spider co-founded the Pogues, along with Shane MacGowan, Jem Finer, and James Fearnely and he has appeared on all of their recordings. The band's original intent was for MacGowan and him to share vocal duties, but She decided to leave them to Shane after the first performance, opting to learn the tin whistle. He still frequently contributed backing vocals and occasional lead vocals throughout his long tenure with the band. After Shane MacGowan was fired from the Pogues in 1991, Joe Strummer filled in for him for a short period, after which Stacy assumed the role of lead vocalist. The Pogues recorded two albums with him on lead vocals: Waiting for Herb and Pogue Mahone. He resumed his original role in the band when they held reunion shows in 2001 and from 2024 and will do the same for their upcoming tour.
Cáit O'Riordan, Musician and former bass player with the Pogues
The Pogues would be forgiven for thinking they shouldn't carry on after the death of frontman Shane MacGowan. It was his voice and songwriting that gave the band that extra special spark. Luckily, they won't be putting the band to bed just yet. Founding member Spider Stacy joins us this week to discuss their decision to get back out there in front of the fans on tour this fall, celebrate their legacy, and keep those incredible songs alive. We also get into the continuing impact of "Fairytale of New York", the period in the 90s when Shane left the band, and the stories behind several of their best songs. Along with the Chieftains, the Pogues have done more to keep traditional Irish folk music alive than just about anyone else and they remain one of Ireland's greatest musical exports. We're lucky to have them! www.pogues.com
