Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
Today, we've got another segment of the podcast called Big Fat Five. This is where I invite my favorite drummers on the show to break down the five records that helped shape their approach to the instrument. This format also inspired my book, Drummers on Drumming, which is available now as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Today's guest is Jared Shavelson. I met Jared through a mutual buddy and Big Fat Five alum, Mike Robinson. Jared is the real deal. He studied jazz in college but left early to kickstart his career—and it's safe to say that decision paid off. Over the years, he's played with Seal, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Joyce Manor, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint It Black, The Aquabats, and so many others. I just saw him perform with Mariachi El Bronx on New Year's Eve, opening for Morrissey at The Palladium. He was playing a cocktail kit, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms he was laying down were absolutely insane—I was completely blown away. Now, we were supposed to record this a few days ago, but life in LA had other plans. Between the fires and travel chaos, it was hard to pin down a time. Jared ended up flying out of Los Angeles Thursday night, only to get stuck in Atlanta during a snowstorm when his flight was canceled. After being stranded at the airport for 18 hours, he decided to help pass the time by hopping on the mic with me. That's why the audio in this episode might be a little rough—picture Jared huddled in the corner of a busy terminal while we recorded. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

In this week's episode, we unearthed our Gen 2 iPad and traveled back to the decade that many rock n' rollers call the “dark decade”. That's right! We are listening to obscure tracks from the previous decade of the 20-Teens; when Gaga wore a meat dress, we were introduced to Instagram, Indie Rock became a genre, we all got challenged with ice buckets, the host of The Apprentice got elected, and some really great rock n' punk n' metal!New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode we talk about the lost and forgotten gems of the 10s. A decade where music became a true commodity as streaming surpassed all physical and digital media as the way we consume our tunes.Songs this week include:The Bronx - “Style Over Everything” from The Bronx (IV) (2013)Fair To Midland - “Whiskey & Ritalin” from Arrows & Anchors (2011)Rozwell Kid - “Baby's First Sideburns” from Good Graphics EP (2015)The Human Project - “Anti-Pathetic” from Origins (2013)Graveyard - “Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)” from Hisingen Blues (2011)The Carburetors - “Lords Of Thunder” from Laughing In The Face Of Death (2015)Psychopunch - “Long Time Coming” from The Last Goodbye (2010)X Japan - “Born To Be Free” from Born To Be Free – Single (2015) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Okay, so the last two years seems to have passed by in like three months. It feels like life is accelerating faster than a Tesla S Plaid, and we're left in the dust with our iPods and Burt's Tiki Lounge. Alfredo Ortiz is an American musician, primarily a drummer and percussionist. He toured with the Beastie Boys as their drummer and percussionist from 1996 until their final show in 2009. He also appeared in their live concert film, Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That!, and was featured in their Grammy Award-winning instrumental album, The Mix-Up. Alfredo has been the drummer for other artists such as Money Mark, New York group Morningwood, Los Angeles rockers Red Exiles, and Tito & Tarantula. Ortiz has worked with other bands and musicians including Money Mark, Kathleen Hanna, Los Lobos, The Offspring, Yeska, Ozomatli, BS 2000, Blackalicious, Los Villains, Tommy Guerrero, Mariachi El Bronx, Chromeo, Kelis, Sepultura, Gogol Bordello, Jack White, and Salvador Santana. Ortiz appears on Tenacious D's self titled album, released in 2001. From 2008-2010, he toured with Tito & Tarantula. He has also played with former Mars Volta's bassist Eva Gardner in her band called Lyra. (All info from Wikipedia)
Steve Albini (born July 22, 1961) is an American musician, record producer, audio engineer and music journalist. He was a member of Big Black, Rapeman and Flour, and is a member of Shellac. He is the founder, owner and principal engineer of Electrical Audio, a recording studio complex in Chicago. In 2018, Albini estimated that he had worked on several thousand albums over his career. He has worked with acts such as Nirvana, Pixies, the Breeders and PJ Harvey. Albini is also known for his outspoken views on the music industry, having stated repeatedly that it financially exploits artists and homogenizes their sound, as well as the flaws in the digital recording process and the superiority of analog technology. Albini's engineering skills have been celebrated for their sense of space, naturalistic tone, and the power of his guitar and drum sounds; his own guitar work is as imaginatively abrasive as his lyrics, which can be challenging and sometimes confrontational. Nearly alone among well-known producers and musicians, Albini refuses to take ongoing royalties from album sales, feeling that a producer's job is to record the music to the band's desires, and that paying producers as if they had contributed artistically to an album is unethical. In this episode, part two of a series of two, all songs selected by Steve Albini as guest for Australian TV show Rage, on June 29 2013. Lineup: Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, Repercussions, Curtis Mayfield, Philip Glass, Broadcast, Chrome, Sisters of Mercy, Venom P. Here's a quick chat with one of my favourite singers in one of my favourite bands - well, a few of my favourite bands if you include Mariachi El Bronx and the much underrated The Drips. I'm speaking of course about Matt Caughthran from The Bronx. We talk about the LA band's most recent record Bronx VI, what's next for Mariachi, and how can I get hold of one of those amazing promotional Bronx ouija boards that were knocking about around fifteen years ago. I had one. I think someone stole it. If you've got one and you wanna sell, I wanna talk. Step right up!Yeah, it's a cool episode this. The James McMahon Music Podcast is a Spoook Media production. Interview No. 59 with Matt Caughthran from The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, and The Drips.
Multi-instrumentalist Joby Ford took a break from the camping life to talk tone with Ross. You might know Joby as one of the founding members and guitarists of The Bronx, maybe for his guitar or vihuela or jarana or accordion work in Mariachi El Bronx, maybe for his surf guitar sounds in Pounded By the Surf, and beyond.... Regardless, was stoked to get him out of the tubing tides of Tennessee to take a dip in some soundwaves for this enlightening chat. The Bronx is currently on tour with Rancid and Dropkick Murphys to celebrate the release of their sixth album: the aptly titled "Bronx VI" and it is an absolute banger of an album. In this episode, we talk tone, amps, strings, pickups, effects, moshing, skateboarding, being a dad, and beyond... This episode is also graced by the additional music of one of Joby's other bands: Pounded By the Surf. Keep up with all things The Bronx at www.thebronxxx.com Scope Pounded By the Surf here And be sure to catch The Bronx when they roll through your town with either Rancid/Dropkick or Every Time I Die later this year. On this Joby Ford interview, the joy of playing guitar in an unstructured format, after years of classical training… following his passions of music and art and building something that quenches his thirst for both, what’s kept The Bronx together (and happy) for over two decades, Joby’s top 3 musical experiences, starting a family, work ethic, cooking, bass fishing, Norway, “Not doing dumb shit,” and being cool to people. Joby J Ford is the guitarist from The Bronx and also their creative designer, he also was the creative lead at Vagrant Records during their heady days of the early 2000's. Joby talks art, music and discusses why his bands don't name their albums and where his inspiration comes from. Here's the rundown: The Get Up Kids / New Amsterdams (4:56), Saves The Day (7:38), Hot Rod Circuit (12:02), Dashboard Confessional (16:10), Paul Westerberg (25:00), The Drips (28:12), The Bronx and Mariachi El Bronx – pretty much every record cover explained (32:46), Every Time I Die (45:18), The Killers (51:00), Brantley Gilbert (53:33)
If you've ever had the pleasure of seeing a Bronx show, you can attest to the fact Matt Caughthran is a dynamic enigma all to his own. True to his own style, Matt took the concept of My Mixtape and turned it on it's head, instead of making a mixtape of songs he loves, he's chosen all the songs he hates, and joined Redbeard to explain why. The mystery at the end of last week’s episode is a mystery no more. And Weaver didn’t even pick it, it was Mark in the end. We lied to you. We lied and we’re sorry. Instead of trying to reckon with some hot button sociopolitical issues like we did last week, this week we’re actually talking about The Bronx. A lot. We cover their entire discography (note: we did NOT cover Mariachi El Bronx, but they are mentioned) and try to figure out what they did to get signed to a major label so goddamn quickly. Conspiracy? A rare moment of an A&R guy actually caring about a band? Is it because they’re actually really good? All options are considered. Aside from rampantly speculating about how they got a major record deal so quickly, we also go on quite the trip with the Dave Grohl nexus, which this week encompasses Skrillex, Lady Gaga, Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morrisette and of course, the singer of Nirvana himself, Chad Kroeger. It’s a rare moment of consensus from yer bois. Do you think this is the best album by The Bronx? The power is in your hands.

The Bronx arrived on the scene some 15 years ago, all hardcore punk ethics and rock & roll showmanship. Through everything, they're still here and still raising hell on a global scale. Five albums deep - eight if you count their Mariachi El Bronx records - the Los Angeles band have a storied history that has traversed house shows, international festivals and the hallowed halls of the Ed Sullivan Theater. Before a killer show at Sydney's Metro Theatre this past October, vocalist Matt Caughtthran and guitarist Joby Ford shared a highlight reel from their lives as perennial underdogs that have found themselves winning time and time again. The Bronx's discography can be found at their Bandcamp page: https://thebronx.bandcamp.com/ Our thanks to Cat Clarke at Cooking Vinyl and the invincible Boo Johnston for their assistance in making this happen. NOTE: To skip the intro - which includes thank-yous for 2018 and a word on the Patreon - cut to 8:20 on your player. Matt Caughthran is the incomparable singer of L.A. punk rock band The Bronx and it's Latin flavored sister band, Mariachi El Bronx. Whether its tearing up basement punk clubs with Bronx or opening bigger arena shows with El Bronx - Matt and company have found a way to balance both reaching many people from a variety of backgrounds. We talk about striking that balance, as well as his early days growing up in East L.A., lineup changes, and some details about new the Bronx record due this fall! Ben Flanagan is the singer and bassist for Black Map. The bay area band has been busy since releasing their second album, "In Droves" last year. They've hit the road in the U.S. more than ever before touring with the likes of Chevelle and Bush. I chat with Ben about his days in early bands like The Actual and Trophy Fire, 90's comedy, Scott Weiland, signing with EOne Music, and future plans with Black Map.

This week we dive into the women-empowering, yet totally insane video for TLC's Unpretty: forced boob jobs, CGI ladybugs, gang wars (for some reason), and onscreen bulimia. Music we like: Mariachi El Bronx, Baroness's "Shock Me," and Ty Segall's new band Goggs.
Guys. We all know 2016 has been one big shanshow. But it's not all bad, is it? We picked out some of our absolute favourite moments in pop culture this year to obsess over one last time... Including: Stranger Things! Master of None! The Witch! Leo (obvs)! Conor Oberst! PAWS! The Pixies! Mariachi El Bronx! Tiger Army! Moana! The Girl With All The Gifts! And way more. Should have included RPDRAS2 but I forgot. We want to know your highlights, too. Tell us what distracted you from the ongoing horror of the year over on Twitter! http://twitter.com/itsthosegals thosegalsgotmail@gmail.com
That…was…the question. The answer? I did not pee. Other things we learn today: “Cumbersome,” by Seven Mary Three is, well, cumbersome. Except when I’m singing it passionately. Then it’s both annoying and cumbersome. Shadyside: 10,878 rich white people can’t be wrong. Greg gives Quincy Jones perhaps too much credit, which is all of the credit, for Michael Jackson’s early solo music (i.e. Off the Wall, Thriller). This morning, a soberer, more contemplative Greg is feeling less…uh…you could say, histrionic. Pittsburgh Popcorn Company popcorn is, and I clear my throat in preparation for a pure yinzer compliment, “Ruhl good.” The Bronx and Mariachi El Bronx are the very same band. (If you knew this, and again I clear my throat, this time to provide a quintessential Christian Bale exclamation, “Good for you!”) I didn’t know this. It kind of blew my booze soaked mind. This episode is brought to you by the letters P-R-I-N-C-E and the number (…are you really doing this, Del Duca? Yes. Yes, I am…) 69. The music? “Gett Off” and “Get On the Boat.” (See what I did there?) We present to you, “To Pee or Not To Pee? (Chirdonathon, pt 6)"
