What's crackin', y'all? If you read these on the reg', thank you. I appreciate you.You might know that I'm prone to screw things up from time to time when a) interviewing, b) recording, c) producing, and d) all of the above.Nothin' sweeter than doing it on consecutive episodes, though.Yep.I goofed. Again. And as a result, the guest video comes in late. So...my apologies to Will Moulthrop, my partner in crime for Episode No. 91.Should only take me about 10 dozen more of these to devise a foolproof approach.Nevertheless...many thanks to Will for coming over stranger-style and chewing the New Jersey fat with me for a minute. We talked about growing up in and around recorded and live music on the east coast, and how that helped shape Will into the fine fellow and father that he is today. We also discussed a few of Will's favorite records, and they were all Rolling Stones albums. We touched on them in this order:Beggars Banquet (1968)Let It Bleed (1969)Sticky Fingers (1971)Exile on Main Street (1972)It was a pleasure to meet Will and educational to learn about his story, which you can have a peek into over on the 'Gram.Cheers.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this podcast episode. After six soulful albums and two EPs on Daptone Records, the New York collective The Budos Band are releasing their new EP Frontier's Edge via their own label, Diamond West. “It's just a natural growth,” said guitarist Tom Brenneck in a press release. “We're going further away from the sound of Daptone and into territory they probably wanted to stay away from.” That territory is still a psych-heavy instrumental one, inspired by old school R&B, as you can hear on today's Song of the Day. “Somehow, we wrote six songs in two days,” says drummer Brian Profilio. “Tom was able to take what we were doing and put it together in a cohesive manner.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Brazilian singer and guitarist named Rogê made his mark playing his own brand of samba and samba funk in the clubs of Rio de Janeiro. [Samba in Brazil is rather like the Blues in America, a statement and sound born of the forced migration of Africans, and in both styles, these musical roots grew up and out into many more kinds of popular music.] Now, L.A.-based, Rogê is preparing to release his first album outside Brazil in early 2023, in partnership with producer/guitarist Thomas Brenneck (Menahan Street Band, producer/guitarist for Charles Bradley, Sharon Jones and The Budos Band.) It'll be called Curyman, (his given name is Roger José Cury), and even though the record has a big, almost orchestral sound at time, thanks to string arrangements by fellow Brazilian Arthur Verocai, it all starts with the voice and guitar. Samba star Rogê performs these new tunes with percussionist Stephane San Juan, in-studio. Set list: “A Voz Que Não Se Cala”- (by Stephane San Juan), “Existe Uma Voz”, “Pra Vida”

It's mid-July. Sarah's sizzling in the hell mouth that is Dallas, Nancy's mired in NYC's hot human grime, and both think it's a really good idea to stay inside and watch some television. “The Bear” on FX/Hulu turns out to be the distraction they need, a high-octane but humane adventure set in a Chicago kitchen. Nancy is moved to tears by the sight of broken people trying to be better. Sarah gets sucked in by the characters learning from each other and finding self-respect in their work. And both Nancy and Sarah are captivated by the making of a cake. Another treat turns out to be “How to Change Your Mind,” a four-part docu-series about psychedelics based on the 2018 Michael Pollan book that Sarah kept meaning to read. (Thank you, Netflix.) We learn under-the-radar histories about LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, and mescaline, and hear from folks who say these long-vilified drugs can alleviate suffering, ease trauma, and evoke wonder. Sarah wonders if a sober life includes room for psychedelics. Nancy wonders if that amazing drug she once took was actually mescaline. Soul is the most powerful expression of American music--a distinct combination of roots, migration, race, culture, and politics packaged together for your dancing pleasure. But if you thought the sounds of Motown or Stax Records died along with 8-tracks and macramé, you'd be wrong. For two decades, Daptone Records has churned out hard funk and such beautiful soul that these records sparked a musical revolution. Run by a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley, and Bruno Mars. Daptone's records--and those of the larger soul revival scene--pay homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever. It Ain't Retro: Daptone Records and the 21st-Century Soul Revolution (Jawbone, 2021) charts this revival's players, sounds, and tectonic shifts over the past twenty years, taking you from dingy clubs where soul crazed DJs packed the dancefloor, to just uptown where some of the genre's heaviest musicians jumpstarted the renaissance in a basement studio, and all the way to the White House. This definitive tale of Daptone Records' soulful revolution chronicles the label's history, players, and sounds while dissecting the scene's cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. The book also contains rare and unseen images of Daptone artists past and present, including Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, and more. Jessica Lipsky is a journalist and DJ from Brooklyn by way of the San Francisco Bay. She first encountered sweet soul music as a child by obsessively tuning her radio dial and has since extensively covered soul, funk, reggae, and alternative Latin music. Her work on the intersection of culture, music, and politics has appeared in NPR, Billboard, Grammy.com, Columbia Journalism Review, Vice, and LA Weekly. Jessica Lipsky on Twitter. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and music producer Stuart Bogie. Bogie has toured and recorded extensively with groups such as Antibalas, Arcade Fire, TV on the Radio, and Iron and Wine, to name a few, and he performed as the featured soloist in the original Broadway production of Fela!. As a composer/arranger, he scored the Oscar nominated documentary How To Survive a Plague, which featured performances by the Kronos Quartet alongside Bogie's group Superhuman Happiness. He has appeared on recordings by renowned artists such as Craig Finn (of The Hold Steady), Cass McCombs, Sharon Van Etten, Angelique Kidjo (2 Grammy winning albums), Medeski Martin and Wood, Yeasayer, Spencer Day, Holly Miranda, Foals, Passion Pit, Mac Miller, and legendary improvised conductor Butch Morris. Bogie currently leads The Bogie Band featuring Joe Russo, a nine piece Winds and Drum group that just released their debut album entitled The Prophets In The City (Royal Potato Family) — the main focus of this episode. The Prophets in the City is a collaboration between old friends, as Bogie teams with drummer extraordinaire Joe Russo most known for helming Joe Russo's Almost Dead. Heightening Bogie's fiery arrangements and Russo's dynamic drumming, The Prophets in the City features a supporting cast of musicians whose resumes run through some of New York City's most beloved bands including Antibalas, The Dap-Kings, Budos Band, St. Vincent, and David Byrne's American Utopia. The resulting efforts on the debut album are riotous and jubilant, pushing the boundaries of instrumental music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Stuart Bogie discuss how New York City's energy and spirit directly inspired The Prophets in the City. They discuss the brilliant grouping of players on the album and what it's like for Bogie to work with the phenomenally talented Joe Russo. They discuss music that has influenced Bogie over the years, a variety of his other projects, and so much more. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Leon Michels grew up in New York, picking up the Saxophone while he was in high school. His teachers introduced him to early jazz from artists such as Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. It was his encounter with the musicians that would go on to form "Budos Band" that introduced him to the world of deep funk and afrobeat, and from there Leon would go on to experiment with his own recordings, initially on a multitrack reel-to-reel recorder a friend had gifted him, and eventually to putting out his own music under the "El Michels Affair" moniker.Leon's career has also seen him work on projects for high profile artists such as "Lana Del Rey" and being sampled by producers working with "Beyonce".On this episode Jay and Jesse dive deeper into Leon's back catalogue as well as his approach and workflow to making music."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Hello everyone and welcome to the last show of 2021! We've had some EPIC snowfall lately and avalanche danger has spiked to High for several days this past week. On this week's show, we dive into how what all this new snow is doing to our snowpack, take a quick look at the recent avalanche incidents happening across our zone, and share some upcoming events happening in our community. And then, we dive into this week's avalanche education nugget of the week: an analogy for how to think about the risks associated with the different hazard ratings that make up the North American Danger Scale. Music on the show is from Juanitos and the Budos Band. Hey, if you like what you're hearing, share the pod with your touring partners. And, if you wanna help spread the word in other ways, I'm making stickers! Shoot me an email at sanjuansnowcast@gmail.com if you'd like a few stickers to throw on your skis, your local stop signs, or wherever! Also, I'm still doing this just for the fun of it, but it does cost me to host and produce the show. I ain't gonna beg, but if you're in the “end-of-the-year-charitable-giving-mood”, you can find me on Venmo at @Chris-Dickson. Thanks for listening and… THINK SNOW!

"The Budos Band" are a psychedelic, afrobeat rock outfit from Staten Island, New York.Boasting a line-up of 9 musicians, The Budos members originally met through various musical connections in New York City, starting as far back as the mid 90's. Through neighborhood jams, various name changes, and a shared love for afrobeat inspired music, the group finally released their self-titled debut album in 2005, on the legendary funk and soul label Daptone Records. Since those early days the band has gone on to tour the world, release 5 more studio albums and evolved their sound to also incorporate their love for obscure underground 70's era rock music. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg
