Ever wonder how someone becomes a rock and roll star? Well, today you're going to find out. Steph Paynes, founder and lead guitarist of the all-girl powerhouse quartet Lez Zeppelin, shares her journey from rock journalist to leader of a band that captures the essence, spirit, power and seductiveness of Led Zeppelin.  Steph started the group in 2004, after touring as a “Ronette” with the “first bad girl of rock and roll,” Ronnie Spector. Before donning the white satin dragon suit, she worked as a freelance writer, novelist and music journalist. Her stories and reviews have appeared in Rolling Stone, The NME, Musician, Guitar Player and Playboy among many other publications. She has shared the stage with Joey Ramone, Keith Richards and Chuck Berry.  So much gold in this episode. We go deep on: How boldly walking into the offices of The NME as a young 20-something propelled her early career as a music journalist The story of how she dined on ham sandwiches with Frank Zappa at the Waldorf Astoria and discussed the censorship happening in music Dealing with disappointment  The importance of practicing, persisting and being a master at your craft How Ronnie Spector restored her spirit and what she learned about giving everything to your performances When Steph knew she was onto something big with her new band Lez Zeppelin You've got to love what you're doing because the audience can tell Navigating the art and challenge of a group playing in communion Channeling emotion and pulling your own essence out of your art < CONNECT WITH LEZ ZEPPELIN > https://lezzeppelin.com/  < LET'S RISE > Energy Queen Mastermind: June - December 2025 Applications Open Soon What You Came Here For Retreat | Cape Cod | September 2025 https://www.oceanedge.com/wellness-retreats/What-You-Came-Here-For  Iceland Retreat: Worldly Women Traveling in the Land of Fire + Ice | November 2025 Applications Open Soon

We wonder if there will be a Vaping Man in Season 11, freak out about these evil airtight fire doors, think it's hurtful that Yves refuses to do the hand on window thing, and clown on Skinner for a long time because apparently he thought it would be a great idea to bury Byers, Langly, and Frohike in Arlington. Send us a textRey Roldan stops by the podcast to talk about being Britney's Publicist, Interviewing Kurt Cobain, an interesting encounter with Bono, Fandom, and so much more.********Rey has seen a lot… and I mean A LOT. Twenty-six plus years as a publicist (since 1995) and a few years before that as a nationally published entertainment journalist, he's been around. Backstage, on the tour bus, in the hotel rooms, behind closed doors, in the conference room… he's witnessed almost all… but there's undoubtedly more that he hasn't seen.  But it hasn't shocked him. In fact, it's intrigued him… challenged him… and at times, offered myriad choices of how to react and how to process. And that's the thing… nothing shocks him. Starting his journey into the lion's den that is the music industry, he was a journalist for a number of newspapers, magazines, and regionals across the country (and one or two overseas). He's interviewed Kurt Cobain, U2, Joey Ramone, Sinead O'Connor, Bjork, Polly Jean Harvey… oh, and Vanilla Ice… While journalism was his passion, it didn't quite pay the bills, especially in Boston. So he moved to NYC and jumped into Publicity. IRS Records, Mammoth Records, Grass Records, Jive/Silvertone/Zomba, KSA Publicity/Press Here, Island Def Jam… He worked with Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Hanson, Duran Duran, Sting, Brooks & Dunn, O Brother Where Are Thou?, Juliana Hatfield, Diana Ross, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Dresden Dolls, Charlotte Church, among hundreds of others.  He did the label (indie and major) and indie PR thing but he was burnt out on doing publicity like a pre-defined template that labels determined, so he left the corporate world to start his own shingle with a focus on building profiles and strategies that weren't constrained by hard, constrained blueprints. In 2004, Reybee Inc. was born. Instead of sticking to templates, he and his team of professionals craft unique strategies to build solid foundations and build up from there, creating campaigns that focus on constructing artist careers that go beyond. His campaigns go forward and sideways, and rarely backwards (unless, of course, we're talking retrospectives, which, in that case, they go backwards too).Nearly two decades later, it's still going strong… in fact, it keeps growing… and growing… and growing. If you know the movie “This Is Spinal Tap,” you will certainly recall the moment Spinal Tap bassist Derek Smalls describes himself as the band conduit, "David and Nigel are like poets, you know, like Shelley or Byron, or people like that. The two totally distinct types of visionaries, it's like fire and ice, and I feel my role in the band is to be kind of the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water.” Well, on today's Quick Tap, our guests tell us about the times they left puddles of themselves for a higher purpose. Songwriter Freedy Johnston introduces Lou Reed and Joey Ramone; author and rapscallion Scott Nathan recounts the time he connected Leonardo DiCaprio to a Martin Scorsese flick; and The Pulsars Dave Trumfio reminisces about how he got a rise out of Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher with rock legend Cynthia Plaster Caster. They reminisce about Stephen's first concert experience with Ratt and Bon Jovi in 1985, his fascinating encounters with musicians, and the influential music video directors he has interviewed for his upcoming book. The conversation also delves into memorable concerts attended by Stephen, from an unforgettable Joey Ramone show to a spectacular Prince performance, while also addressing the surprising disappointment of Billy Bob Thornton's Boxmasters. Need packaging, talk to Evelio: https://www.linkedin.com/in/eveliomattos/ Wanna work with Robot-Food? https://www.robot-food.com Simon Forster is the founder of Robot Food, a design and branding agency known for its disruptive and innovative approach. With a background in art and a history rooted in punk and skate culture, Simon has cultivated a reputation for questioning the status quo and pushing creative boundaries. His journey began with running a surfskate brand funded by Joey Ramone, marking the beginning of his love affair with branding. Today, Simon and his team at Robot Food are dedicated to creating impactful and standout strategies for their clients. Support our sponsors: Factory Direct Packaging Manufacturing: https://www.idpdirect.com Manage your packaging specifications: https://www.specright.com Sustainable packaging that dissolves in water: https://www.smartsolve.com Episode Summary: In this thought-provoking episode, Simon Forster of Robot Food sits down with Evelio Mattos to discuss the controversial subject of design awards. Simon shares his critical views on the relevance and necessity of such accolades in the industry, outlining how awards can sometimes compromise the integrity of the work and may not ultimately benefit design agencies. The conversation touches on the cost implications and the often-overlooked downside of getting trapped in a cycle of constantly chasing awards. Simon's punk-rock ethos and commitment to authentic, disruptive design shine throughout the discussion, challenging the conventional wisdom around what it means to be successful in the design world. Simon highlights the hefty financial burden of entering design awards and questions their true value to clients. He explains that his agency's growth and reputation have been built on delivering results rather than chasing recognition through awards. Simon emphasizes that clients prioritize results such as increased sales and brand impact over industry accolades. With a background that includes leading a skate brand funded by Joey Ramone, Simon blends his punk roots with his professional journey to foster a unique and rebellious approach at Robot Food, encouraging brands to stand out rather than conform. Key Takeaways: The Cost of Awards: Design awards come with significant entry fees and additional costs if you win, which can be a heavy burden for startups. Client Priorities: Clients are more interested in tangible business results rather than whether an agency has won awards. Disruptive Design: Success in design comes from questioning the norm and creating emotionally and visually disruptive work. Agency Culture: A rebellious, questioning attitude within an agency can foster innovation and lead to standout work. Alternative Recognition: Rather than seeking awards, Simon advocates for cutting through the noise by delivering exceptional client outcomes. Dive into the full episode to explore these insights and more, as Simon Forster shares his candid perspectives on the design industry, the true value of awards, and the importance of staying disruptive. Not to glorify the use of narcotics, or anything, but this is the most joyous celebration of bored nihilism I've ever heard. Joey Ramone said he wrote the song when he was stranded in London during Christmastime, with nothing to do and nowhere to go. And, here, the boys are symbolically kicking down the doors of their hotel room and running amok for our pleasure. These were my contemporaries: they were playing CBGB's on the Bowery, while I was plying my singer-songwriter hack across town in the West Village. Geographically close, but two different worlds, and I, theatrically trained emoter that I was, missed the whole punk revolution that was brewing right under my nose. Talk about not seeing the forest for the tree! We might have been close in age, and just like me they had been born and bred across the east river - but they were the real deal: dedicated to the rock and roll lifestyle, while I was just visiting. They're all dead now - but, man, did they rage against the dying of the light. They immolated themselves, these four similarly named Icaruses, in pursuit of rock immortality. And, they achieved it. And, you can feel that undeniable energy in this romp - their call to arms against banality.

Send us a Text Message. When Lee Finkelstein lays down a beat, it's not just rhythm—he's telling a story, painting a landscape. It's a philosophy I, John Simeone, share wholeheartedly. Our recent conversation took us on a tour through the world of drumming, where we unpacked the essence of what it means to truly play for the music. Lee, with his wealth of experience across genres, emphasizes the idea that serving the song trumps personal showmanship. We riff on the camaraderie between drummers, the joy found in simplicity, and the magnetic pull of a groove that unites a band. The heartbeat of our episode pulses with discussions on live performance and the wisdom Lee shares gleaned from playing with legends like the Blues Brothers band and stepping in for David Garibaldi with Tower of Power. As we explore the shifting tides of the music industry, we offer nuggets of advice for up-and-coming drummers striving to stay relevant.
