What are the expectations for Ford?   Puck and Jim discuss Dan Wilsons' disastrous managerial job yesterday against the Twins and they have breaking news as it was announced during their show that Cal Raleigh will participate in the home run derby. Chris Egan, KING 5, makes his weekly appearance and they chat about Raleigh participating in the HR Derby, Egan's fishing trip to Westport, Puck's fascination with peanut butter and his Reese's Peanut Butter Cup hack job.  They poke fun at Jim's video that he posted on twitter on his first day working as a golf marshal.  Finally, they can't seem to understand why Dylan Moore continues to play as much as he plays. “The Scout” joins Puck for his weekly Friday visit.  “The Scout” is an anonymous MLB scout that has been covering the game for the past 30 years.  With Harry Ford on his way to Texas to join the Mariners, Puck and “The Scout” spend a good portion of Friday's show discussing Ford.  They discuss his strengths as a defender and also what he needs to work on. Offensively, Ford is Major League ready according to the “The Scout.”   What stands out the most about Ford though is his leadership, “he's everyone's favorite teammate,” - “The Scout”. Puck wraps up the show with, “Hey, What the Puck?!”  (1:00) Puck and Jim (23:35) Chris Egan, KING 5 (1:02:00) “The Scout” (1:18:13) “Hey, What the Puck!?”

Ian reflects on what made Lenny such a great player and coach, and now due to the statue unveiling this weekend, what makes him a great person. Eno Sarris, The Athletic says there's absolutely a case to be made for Cal Raleigh to overtake Aaron Judge in the MVP race. He also explores reasons to revamp the way WAR is recorded. We take a trip around the league. In The Daily Power Play! Ian thinks the Kraken trade for Fredrick Gaudreau is a sign of more to come. Don't judge this trade for face value quite yet. Ian feels the apathy toward the league that Groz expressed with Chuck and Buck this morning. He doesn't miss the NBA, he misses the Sonics and Adam Silver continues to jack Seattle around. Ian doesn't want to see he or Bruce Harrell take any victory laps when the league returns. RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot open Episode 339 by revisiting one of Seattle sports fans' oldest wounds — the Sonics' departure — while Oklahoma City dances in the NBA Finals. That leads to a spirited deep dive into Boston's music history, with Hotshot tested on everything from Aerosmith to New Edition. Mitch drops a classic Sonics tale: the time he painted his face in silent protest on a live Sonics pay-per-view broadcast. Pete Carroll makes a podcast appearance — not here, but on Get Got with Marshawn Lynch and Michael Robinson — and throws light shade at Earl Thomas while diplomatically reflecting on his Seahawks departure. Marshawn lets him cook. Mariners No-Table, Brady Farkas reacts to a 30-run explosion in Chicago, marvels at Cal Raleigh's historic pace, and debates whether Cal should skip the Home Run Derby to stay fresh. JP Crawford's All-Star case gets real, Solano suddenly looks irreplaceable, and the lineup finally shows life from top to bottom. Jason Puckett returns for the KJ-Aren'ts, where Mitch discovers Puckett's age through a Thunder hate-watch article and recounts legendary sideline reporting drama during the 1996 NCAA Final Four.   GUESTS KJ-Aren'ts; Jason Puckett | Former KJR Host Mariners No-Table; Brady Farkas | Host, Refuse to Lose Podcast   TABLE OF CONTENTS 0:00 | Sonics PTSD flares up as Thunder hit the Finals. Mitch challenges Hotshot to a musical trivia duel centered on Boston legends. 10:45 | Aerosmith, Boston, New Kids, New Edition, The Cars — and a surprise Dropkick Murphys finale. Mitch makes the case that Boston might outrank Seattle in music legacy. 21:03 | Pete Carroll joins Get Got and casually dunks on Earl Thomas. Marshawn just lets it ride. Pete also explains how control and roster vision led to his Seahawks exit. 29:24 | Mitch declares Cal's historic tear the most electrifying run by a Mariners hitter since Griffey '94 — name-dropping Mantle, Bench, and A-Rod along the way. 49:23 | Guest: Mariners No-Table with Brady Farkas. The Mariners explode for 30 runs in Chicago, Cal Raleigh enters historic territory, and Mitch argues he should skip the Derby to stay fresh. Farkas sees the other side. 1:22:03 | Guest KJ-Aren'ts Part 1: Mitch finds out Puckett's age by reading The Athletic, where Puckett is quoted from a Thunder hate-watch at Mike's Chili Parlor. 1:41:12 | Guest KJ-Aren'ts Part 2: Mitch tells the story of being banned from the Final Four — then shows up on live TV in full Syracuse face paint. Kevin and Marcus nearly lose it on air. 2:03:54 | Other Stuff Segment: Mitch confesses to miscrediting “The Twist” and recycling a decade-old John Olerud story, while Scott gleefully mocks his declining fastball. They also swap nostalgic war stories — Scott streaming Game 7 from a spaghetti joint, Mitch sideline-reporting with Syracuse face paint — before spiraling into Rick Ocasek's death, landline superiority, and the glory days of Queen Anne's Spaghetti Factory.

Logan returns, the offense does not. The Mariners go 1-9 with runners in scoring position and Julio and Cal were the worst of the bunch. The good news is that Logan looked like Logan, striking out 10 over 5 innings of work and we have had 4 great starts from our pitching staff. Now, if we could just get the pitching and offense to work together more consistently… what a sight that would be! :30- Yes, we have already lamented about last night's 2-0 shutout at the hands of the Red Sox, but it's the top of the order that we have to focus on here. With the bases loaded by the bottom of the order, JP stepped up to the plate with no outs and struck out… followed by Julio and Cal also striking out to leave them loaded and take away nothing. HIGHLIGHTS ATTACHED- including Logan's 10 strikeouts and the strikeouts of JP, Julio and Cal :45- Ok, we have to briefly talk about the NBA Finals. OKC won game 5 to take a 3-2 lead and they could close it out later this week. We knew this would happen eventually, we just hoped we would have a team back before it did. What the Riff?!?
1966 - February: The Sonics "Boom"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 16, 2025 29:04

Before the grunge movement of the 90's, and before the punk movement of the 70's, there was the garage band phenomenon of the 60's.  One of the forerunners of both punk and grunge from this garage band period is Tacoma Washington's The Sonics.  Their classic lineup consisted of Rob Lind on harmonica, vocals, and sax, Gerry Roslie on organ, piano, and lead vocals, Larry Parypa on lead guitar and vocals, Andy Parypa on bass, and Bob Bennett on drums.  The Sonics had a fast, hard-edged sound similar to The Kinks, and performed with a speed that would inspire punk rock.Boom is their second studio album from the band, released in February 1966.  As with many songs from the mid-60's, all the songs are short.  But with a non to the future punk movement, many songs are even shorter, clocking in at just over 2 minutes.  The Sonics take their name from Boeing, the aviation company also based in Tacoma.  The name of the album is likely a play on words for the "sonic boom," the thunderous sound produced by an aircraft exceeding the speed of sound.  The music on this album is energetic and abrasive, and while some fuzzy guitar distortion is included the overall feel is raw with little extra production. The classic lineup would fall apart by 1968, with members leaving to join other bands, attend college, or in saxophonist Rob Linds' case - become a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War.  Gerry Roslie would be the sole remaining original member with new members jumping in and out of the band until 1980.  Wayne brings us this forerunner of punk and grunge for this week's podcast. CinderellaThe lead-off song from the album was an original piece written by Gerry Roslie.  The lyrics relay a boy meeting a girl at a bar, having a great time drinking and dancing, and just when things start to get going well, the girl is gone by midnight.  He's Waitin'This song starts the B-side of the album, and was also a Gerry Roslie original.  This "boy loses girl" song is not a happy one!  The lyrics reflect the boy's thoughts on being burned by a girl.  Now he is telling her that Satan is waiting for her.  "It's too late, you lied, now you will fry." Louie, LouieRichard Berry wrote and performed this song in 1957 with The Pharaohs, and covers of this song are common with garage bands.  The Sonics' version is quite fast, and modifies the pronunciation from "Lou-ee Lou-ee" to "Lou-eye Lou-way" in the chorus.  It is hard to separate this song from the thoughts of fraternity parties and the comedy movie "Animal House." Shot DownThe song that closes out the album laments about striking out when approaching a girl.  "I play a guitar.  I even drive a brand new car.  Big man in town, I've been shot down."  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the motion picture "The Rare Breed"This western starred James Stewart and Maureen O'Hara and was one of the first films scored by the now-legendary composer John Williams. STAFF PICKS:Crying Time by Ray CharlesBruce leads off the staff picks with the lead single and starting track to Ray Charles' album of the same name.  The song was originally performed by Buck Owens in 1964, and Charles kept the country feel while taking the cover to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  He won the Grammy Awards in 1967 for Best R&B Recording and Best R&B Solo Performance for this track. It's a Man's Man's Man's World by James BrownLynch brings us a song that takes its name as a play on the name of a 1963 comedy film, "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World."  The minor key track has lyrics decrying the chauvinism of society where all the work of modern civilization are attributed to men, but it would all "mean nothing without a woman or a girl."  Brown recorded the song in only two takes, and it would become a staple of his live shows for the rest of his career.Secret Agent Man by Johnny RiversRob features a surf rock song originally developed as the opening intro to the U.S. spy television series "Secret Agent," which aired from 1964 to 1966. The ditty became popular, and Rivers developed it into a full single.  The song would go to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming both a signature song for Rivers and a rock standard for future bands and shows.Lies by The KnickerbockersWayne's closes out the staff picks with a song from an American band deliberately trying to mimic the sound of a British Invasion song.  The trio harmonies definitely give it a Beatles quality.  As you might expect from the band name, the Knickerbockers got their start in New Jersey as a garage band.  The track came together in about a half hour. COMEDY TRACK:The One on the Right is On the Left by Johnny CashThis comedy song about a band with incompatible political leanings amongst its members takes us out for this week's podcast.
