On the Build Your Success podcast, host Brian Brogen interviews Andy Benedetto, business representative for Millwrights Local 1121, which covers Millwrights across the six New England states and is part of the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters.Andy explains millwrights as industrial mechanics whoinstall, maintain, move, rig, and precisely align rotating equipment in power generation and general industry, including conveyors at airports and distribution centers. He details mobilizing for the Vineyard Wind offshore project with GE Vernova, including unique offshore challenges like helicopter travel, shipboard living, extreme heights, mixed crews, limited connectivity, and extensive added training (GWO, advanced rescue, HUET). To ensure success, the Local surveyed and vetted members forreadiness and professionalism, achieving 100% retention over about 2.5–3 years, while managing delays through standby pay. Andy shares lessons on planning, collaboration, and how union training can reduce cost and time, and provides contact channels on LinkedIn, Facebook, and at their website listed below.Guest LinkedIn: Andy Benedetto |LinkedInGuest Website: Local 1121Millwrights – Precisely Aligning New EnglandCarpenters Building aBetter Future - NASRCCHost Email:brianb@buildcs.net Host LinkedIn: Brian Brogen, PMP
Robin Clevett looks into the role Tradespeople/Builders and Carpenters can simetimes find themselves in when they take on a job and have to be the go-between or middle man in the working relationship between the customer and the architect. Robin talks to a previous customer (Callum Davies-Russell) about his experiences working with Robin and an Architect on his project. Robin also chats to Paul Clarke from an Architectural company that has hired him to take on pre-construction consultations with customers, due to his experience on the tools as a General Builder....And friend of the show and top quality House Builder, Jack Auletta shares his first hand experiences and insight into how to manage this working relationship.
If you were watching cable TV around midday at the turn of the millennium, there's a good chance you saw a commercial for a compilation CD called Monster Ballads. It promised you more than two hours of musical cheese—some of the most over-the-top, cornball, leather-clad romantic jams ever to grace the charts, from “Heaven” to “High Enough,” “Carrie” to “Amanda.”There's another, more common term for these rockin' romancers: power ballads. And while this TV ad suggested the power ballad was perfected in the '80s—preferably sung by a dude in spandex, with long, flowing locks—its roots go back decades earlier. Acts as seemingly mild as Roy Orbison, Harry Nilsson and even the Carpenters were pivotal to the way these mega-devotionals evolved. R&B divas would turn power vocals into an athletic sport, alongside hair-metal howlers. Eventually, power ballads colonized the charts in the '80s, the '90s and beyond.Maybe they're cheesy, cringeworthy and melodramatic—but power ballads have proven remarkably enduring, with even 21st-century Zoomer stars like Olivia Rodrigo offering their own variations. So, join Chris Molanphy as he brings on the heartbreak, finds thorns on every rose, explores feelings we can't fight anymore and celebrates pop fans' greatest love of all: the power ballad.Podcast production by Kevin BendisNeed to set up your Slate Plus feed? Cut Chemist has been on my list since the day I started this podcast, so getting him on for Episode 85 was a real full-circle moment. He's someone whose records genuinely shaped how I dig and how I think about putting samples together, and across this conversation he traces the whole arc — from kicking along to a Bobby Darin concert in the womb, to a McDonald's straw on a snare drum, to Star Wars soundtracks, to the moment hip hop landed for him in 1983.We get deep into the Hollywood scene that raised him, the Rhino Records parking-lot quarter bins where he and his friends amassed beats nobody had touched, and the Jungle Brothers album that made him realise he could make "a record made out of records."From Unity Committee into Jurassic 5, sharing the production chair with Nu-Mark, the all-45s leap into Brain Freeze with DJ Shadow, the solo tightrope of The Audience's Listening, and right up to his candlelit listening parties now — this one's a masterclass in following the unfamiliar. It's long, it's nerdy in all the right places, and I couldn't have asked for more from a guest who's influenced me this much.In this episode we cover:His earliest musical memories — parents, live drums, Carpenters and a deep sci-fi soundtrack obsessionDiscovering hip hop in 1983 via KDAY, breakdancing, graffiti and the elements one at a timePublic Enemy, Bomb Squad and why Main Source is his production templateThe Jungle Brothers album that turned him into a samplerLearning gear the hard way — reel-to-reel, Roland S10, MPC, the Pro Tools learning curveForming Jurassic 5 out of Unity Committee, and the east-coast heart in a west-coast cityPre-internet sample sleuthing and the legendary Rhino Records quarter binsFirst DJ gigs at 15, learning to cut, and the up-and-down fader style that became his ownQbert and the 1996 X-Men vs Scratch Pickles battleA digging philosophy: is the juice worth the squeeze?Sharing production with Nu-Mark, building Lesson 6, and breaking in Europe with Mr FormatThe Rare Equations mix, the Number Song remix and the all-45s origins of Brain FreezeOzomatli, Brazilian and African digging, and constructing a set like a compositionThe Audience's Listening at 20, The Garden in Brazil, and the Italy trip that changed everythingThe Good Life Cafe education and record shopping with Biz MarkieStable Sound, the Bandcamp subscription, and his candlelit psychedelic sound bathsOn Keb Darge, on Edan, and the Expert of None shows coming next
This week, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz kick off the summer months with a new installment of the Critics at Large advice series. Listeners' questions run the gamut: a high-school economics teacher seeks films for his students which aren't set in the world of finance; a caller from Iran looks for cultural works to help endure periods of extreme uncertainty; and two friends on the cusp of college graduation ask for recommendations to guide them in their next chapter. “Art is not a thing separate from our troubles or from our awareness of the insane contingencies of life,” Cunningham says. “It's meant as a companion and a response to those. I think that's shining through in some of these questions.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Sorry to Bother You” (2018)“My Architect: A Son's Journey” (2003)“Les dites cariatides” (1984)“Twenty Minutes in Manhattan,” by Michael SorkinThe photography of Eugène AtgetThe music of the Notorious B.I.G., Heavy D, Fat Joe, and Big Pun“Sentimental Education,” by Gustave FlaubertVáclav Havel's “Audience”“The Best of Everything,” by Rona Jaffe“How to Murder Your Life,” by Cat Marnell“Becoming a Centenarian,” by Calvin Tomkins (The New Yorker)“This Old Man,” by Roger Angell (The New Yorker)“Tabula Rasa,” by John McPhee (The New Yorker)“Kramer vs. Kramer” (1979)“Divorcing,” by Susan TaubesElena Ferrante's Neapolitan novels“Ghost World,” by Daniel Clowes“Frances Ha” (2012)“Asparagus” (1979)Roger Payne's “Songs of the Humpback Whale”“Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction,” by J. Paula Arenas habla en exclusiva con La Clave Pop sobre Nada Es Permanente, su cuarto álbum independiente y el más personal de su carrera.
This week we're talking to Doublespeak, a synthpop supergroup featuring Vince Clarke of Erasure, Yazoo and Depeche Mode, Neil Arthur of Blancmange, and producer and synthesizer expert Benge. They've just released their self-titled debut album which features electropop covers of songs by The Carpenters, The Magnetic Fields, David Essex, Young Marble Giants, ABBA, and more. We talked separately with Vince Clarke first, and then Neil and Benge together and we all talked about how the project came to be, how they picked which songs to cover and which were the most difficult to do. We also discussed the projects future, including writing and recording a few Doublespeak originals, plus updates on new albums from Erasure, Blancmange, and Benge's band Wrangler, plus a little food talk, five records they think everyone should own, and more. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein

1. Carpenters – (They Long To Be) Close To You @ Close To You (1970) 2. (2006) 3. Pink Floyd – Speak to Me / Breathe (In the Air) @ The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) 4. Massive Attack Feat. Elizabeth Fraser – Teardrop @ Mezzanine (1998) 5. José González – Heartbeats @ Veneer (2003) 6. (2016) 8. Bambee – Bumble Bee @ On Ice (1999)
