StabbyQuest is a story-focused, actual-play tabletop roleplaying game podcast. A ram's head necklace. A spool of thread. A long-dead legend. How are they connected, and what does their arrival mean for Sandpoint, nay, for Golarion? Find out, in StabbyQuest!
It's the end of our Behind the Dice series of the first StabbyQuest campaign! In this episode we finish off the series by discussing helpful items for the players, such as handouts and when they're appropriate, When does meta or table talk feel right, and some fun ways to incorporate both of those into the game. We finish off by revisiting the last episode before this Behind the Dice started, including a couple of character reveals and the cliffhanger the gameplay episodes paused on. Thank you all so much for hanging with us through these Behind the Dice episodes, and we hope you enjoyed them. The next episode will return to gameplay, and we'll stay with these through the end of the campaign. If you enjoy the show please leave us a review or rating on your platform of choice, and as always Thanks for listening and thanks to our wonderful Patrons who keep this show on the air. These Behind the Dice series are almost over! I can't believe we're almost back to gameplay episodes. In this session we continue the theme of a tabletop group "recovering from being lost" - and we discuss a number of options of how to do that. We did eventually settle on one that has been incredibly helpful for us, and we hope some of the ideas herein help any other group who may be in the same position we were. We also discuss the party's actions between the Botched Stay at the Rusty Dragon while chasing Yoxel and Namril, while covering how the other information they already have helps them get a clearer picture of those two mysterious fellas. We also spend a good chunk of time sorting out the information the party has gained by talking with some local experts, and what exactly that means for their main quest. In this episode of our Behind the Dice series, we talk about a period in the campaign where the party was feeling pretty lost about their main quest, and how to recover from those moments as a character and as a player. We dip into character alignment and maybe discover that Kallis isn't the sweet and innocent Dwarf we all thought he was, and what may be in store for Season 2 of StabbyQuest (no spoilers, though). If you enjoy the show please leave us a review or rating on your platform of choice, and as always Thanks for listening and thanks to our wonderful Patrons who keep this show on the air. In this Behind the Dice Episode, we finish talking about Skill Challenges and comparing those in-the-moment feelings to other types of encounters, what the cast would like to see in the campaign and what movies or games they think our game is like, unique or magic items and weapons they don't or do have in their possession (and definitely forgot about), and uncomfortable Oktoberfest experiences! Kallis, Taat, Pubby, and Stabby had a blast at the GameCraft Arcade and Bar Kickstarter Backer Only party, check out our social media for some pictures of the event! Happy Halloween! This episode is the next in our Behind the Dice series, a mix of campaign recap and a discussion about the show with the Cast. We continue with the touching on the important parts of the campaign, and this episode focuses on the fight to Save Belor, the Wasp Insignia the gang keeps seeing around, and their second? third? foray onto the ship. We start with a special announcement for our Paladin Kallis and his family's Kickstarter for their upcoming Arcade and Craft Bar, GameCraftArcade! StabbyQuest is a serial adventure podcast, but we are currently in a special aside series which is a mix of campaign recap and casual interviews with the cast. We bounce all over the adventure thus far, and there are LOTS of spoilers! If you don't want the spoilers, we'll return to the game in a few episodes. The recap continues as the gang discusses their return to Sandpoint with a bunch of bad news. We do jump around a lot in this episode, covering events from various parts the series and connecting the dots with various NPCs. And the theorycrafting pops up again when the gang starts to wonder... what exactly happens when a player character becomes a non player character? StabbyQuest is brought to you by our Patrons! In the last episode, the cast threw around some ideas (and a lot of dirty jokes). In this Behind the Dice episode, the gang digs deep - like, really deep - and attempts to resolve a major mystery in StabbyQuest: What. really. happened. to Aluin? In this Behind the Dice episode, we pick back up after the gang leaves the spider-infested mine just before they abandon their horses and head into Tickwood to find Aluin's manor. Going back through Tickwood gave us all the giggles, and as a result, we earn that explicit rating in this episode. As usual, Behind the Dice episodes are spoiler-laden, casual interview format with the cast covering meta topics and campaign recap. This is a quicker episode, getting us through the gang's second return to the Deadly Mine, before they head out to Aluin's. As usual, there are a ton of spoilers in these episodes, so if you are waiting for all of the campaigns questions to be answered "in-game", we will return to our regular game sessions soon. This StabbyQuest "Behind the Dice" Episode spans two sessions, picking up where BTD part 02 left off. (Where else did they see an orange ring with candles?!) In the second session, the gang sans Sarowyn talks about working realizations into the main gameplay sessions, "Main" quests vs. "PC" quests, making a plan, and why Sarowyn has so many damn secrets. As always for these Behind the Dice sessions: SPOILERS AHEAD! This is our second Behind the Dice episode. If you missed SQ Behind the Dice, part 1, you can find it wherever podcasts are found! These Behind the Dice episodes are a casual interview format. There is less editing than we usually do on the tracks. We talk meta about the characters, Tabletop RPGs, and the StabbyQuest campaign. Spoiler warning: This episode contains lots of 'em! That said, if you don't mind hearing spoilers, listen on! In this episode we begin by remembering when and where the gang first met, and... well, to be completely honest a lot more plot realizations happened than I expected. Welcome to a little special something we've put to together for you: We're calling it "StabbyQuest: Behind the Dice"! In these episodes we'll be speaking with the cast about their trip through this campaign and this project, how they felt about certain aspects of the game, their characters, and each other. And me, as it turns out. This is a casual interview format. There is less editing than we usually do on the tracks. There is a cat in the background. Additionally, THERE ARE SPOILERS! SO many spoilers. That said, if you don't mind hearing spoilers as they sort out what the hell is going on with this ship, with Aluin, and everything else, listen on! The gang struggles with committing to (and remembering) what they should do next. Sarowyn struggles with the lack of modern conveniences. Taat struggles with being a Shaman. After discovering that the sickle Taat stole from the boat has been changing shape over time, they add this phenomenon to the list of questions they intend to ask... someone! They continue to prepare before leaving for Aluin's Manor in the hopes of finding some of those "Ultimate Answers", but first... they need horses. Too bad they got fired and lost their Deputy status. A huge thank you to all of our amazing Patrons, especially Ian R and Magnanimemmy, our Crazy Old Wizards in the Woods! The gang continues trying to sort out what the hell is going on in town, how Aluin fits into all of this, and the risks of leaving town to visit him again. They make a plan to stock up and head out before a comment from Kallis sets Taat down a path of realization, and they discover something they've been lugging around may not be exactly what it seems. The gang barely manages to see the Guest Ledger at the Rusty Dragon, confirming the story of the two mustachioed men they met in the Hog's Head, and then followed back here last night. They then seek assistance in solving the smeared note "puzzle" they found in Cedrin's room, before realizing something important... The gang continues uncovering information as they tie the group manning the ship in the harbor with the local crime outfit. They put a security "failsafe" in place before heading off to verify some information they got a couple of nights ago. As usual, they start the recon plan before finalizing it.
We pick back up this week with the gang learning from Brodert that Aluin Menard was alive and well a mere two weeks ago. The topic of interest becomes Aluin's fate, and they continue the questioning of their acquaintances at the Curious Goblin. Taat finds... well, buys, an artifact of power, before the gang heads off to check in with Charlie, who they haven't seen since they left in the closet of the Pixie's Kitten after their last ship excursion.
Secrets are shared and the information delivery trend continues as the group attempts to reconcile what they've seen, connect the dots, and then fit those various pieces together... until they think to ask Brodert about the crazy old wizard in the woods and discover -yet another- piece to this puzzle.
We pick back up this week with the SQ Crew and Sheriff Belor Hemlock in the back room of the Hog's Head Tavern. Belor had been instructed by the Sandpoint Mayor to revoke his deputies' status and collect their pins, due to the complaints the Mercantile League has been getting from the Merchant Ship the crew has been... investigating. Or, y'know, plundering. After Belor leaves, the crew gets a stiff drink and a plan together before heading over to the Curious Goblin to check in with their cantankerous buddy, Brodert. Brodert drops so much knowledge on them that they're a bit overwhelmed, and the cherry on top of this sundae is... something they all missed! This episode of StabbyQuest is brought to you by Tabletop Gaming Rule #2: Take notes!
Welp, it seems like the gang is about to face the music. They correctly deduced that the cryptic message they received in the lobby of the Rusty Dragon was instructing them to go to the back room at the Hog's Head, where Belor Hemlock was awaiting their arrival. While the group tries to explain their actions (and unwittingly incriminate themselves), they *do* get a few answers to some outstanding questions, but they also get a warning. One thing's for certain - there's a change in the wind.
As we return to this episode, the gang continues breaking into rooms in the Rusty Dragon looking for evidence of the two mustachioed men they followed through the back alleys. After a lot of searching and a couple close calls, they decide to leave, and on the way out are met with a cryptic request...
The gang followed those mustachioed men back to the Rusty Dragon, of all places. Unsure how to glean the information they were looking for from the clerk, they opted to spend the night instead, taking the only available room. Once they sort out sleeping arrangements and get some rest, they wake to continue the recon.
The gang has just learned the two "mustachioed" men dining in the Hog's Head who were eyeing them *bolted* after the guys got "drunk" Sarowyn out of the bar. They give chase, and end up in a very familiar place...
We return with our players discussing how to go about tying up some of their abundant leads, including checking in with Brodert Quink and Belor Hemlock. *In game* our heroes are drinking in the Hogs Head Tavern, Sarowyn has just approached two individuals who were eyeing the group from the other side of the bar. She pretended to be intoxicated in order to glean some information from them, and... it actually kinda worked. But make no mistake: Sarowyn's is a face they won't soon forget.
Safely back in the Hog's Head Tavern, the gang eats dinner and continues discussing their factually awful "stealth" foray back onto the ship. Upon looking at the manifest, they see the ship is actually from Magnimar, far to the southwest. As they try to piece this puzzle together, a couple of them spot some... prying.. eyes.. from across the room. Will they figure out who's watching them? Have they drawn the ire of the ship's owner yet? And what does the militia actually do here, anyway?
In the last episode, the gang made it back to the Pixie's Kitten in the nick of time. We rejoin them in the closet as they plan their course across town back to the Hog's Head. Will they escape unscathed? Will they be caught by the dockworkers or harassed by the militia?
When we last left our heroes, they were mid-escape from the big ship in the harbor and Kallis had just attempted to convince the Ship's guard captain and another on duty he had some important information. They believed him, but Kallis' wrestling attempt went south quickly and he was headed ass-over-teakettle off of the dock, still holding onto the guards. Will Kallis take a dip in the drink? Will Sarowyn, Pubby, and Taat outmaneuver their assailants? Find out... in StabbyQuest!
Welp, the proverbial shite has hit the fan. The gang's attempt to get on the ship - again - only went well enough for them to see the ship was filled floor to ceiling with crates. We come back to Pubby, Sarowyn, and Taat - still in disguise, but trying remain unnoticed while they attempt to escape the dock. Kallis and Charlie watch from afar just in case this goes in the routine fashion. Will they make it back to the Pixie's Kitten in time to trade in the uniforms? Will the ship guards and the dockworkers recognize the three Elven types? Did any of them consider this before they hatched this cockamamie plan?
After the party the digs through their crate bounty, they remember they have an appointment at the Pixie's Kitten. Okay I actually remind them. There's a fairly important realization, and then a plan is hatched...
Well, somehow they pulled it off. The pulled the crate heist off. The gang regroups and inspects their bounty, and they also forget about something.
With a few hours to kill before they can pick up their disguises, the gang decides to try to find one of these carts with the A crates en route - and wouldn't you know, they find one such cart. A uh, "plan" is hatched and immediately put into action. But will it succeed?
After Sarowyn catches some Zs, the gang heads off to fill in Charlie on everything they learned from the interrogation. Charlie has some new information on the ship, and they reckon that there's only one way to get the answers to their questions: COSTUMES! And as we all know, the best place to get costumes is... a house of uh, companionship???
The gang continues to sort out what to do with the three assailants. Last time Sarowyn dropped something heavy on the guys, shedding some light on the affairs of late. Where are these three guys from? What do they want?
The gang heads out to find Belor after filling in Charlie on their trip to Aluin's. They're interrupted by a messenger bringing seemingly unrelated news. Seemingly unrelated, until they realizes it concerns the three assailants they fought in the center of town. Will they piece the clues together? What secrets will be revealed? Will Bill Murray actually play the BBEG in StabbyQuest?
As the militia cleans up the scene of the attack and the gang returns to the Hog's Head, we focus on the conversation they have with Charlie over beers in the back room. The gang hasn't had time to catch up with Charlie since they got back from Aluin's Manor, so there's a lot of catching up in this episode - and a couple of important clues are dropped. Will the gang notice? Will they discover anything new? Will Charlie have any leads on the weird crap that's happened far? FIND OUT, in this episode of... StabbyQuest!
We return to the party just as Kallis has another vision; the fight is over, the thugs captured. The woman that the thugs were after has died. The gang tries to make sense of what these thugs wanted, but unfortunately the woman's belongings only beget more questions. Will they discover the woman's identity? Or what these thugs sought? Will any of these events make sense soon? Probably. You'll just have to wait and see...
Welcome to Episode 30! Thank you to everyone who has joined us from the beginning and to those that found us along the way. We appreciate your support! We return to our heroes just as Sarowyn realizes that the crowd in town has surrounded a fight - featuring three unknown men against none other than Sheriff Belor Hemlock, who seems to be defending an unconscious woman...
The gang finds *most* of the members of the Divers in this episode. During their explanation of their visit to Aluin's manor, something interrupts... Also, Pubby gets some new clothes. Again. And a shoutout to Kaloglar for the inspiration for some of those clothes. Enjoy the episode!
Settling back into Sandpoint, the gang continues their Bad (?) News deliveries around town. First stop: The Divers! There's a lot to catch up on so I won't waste too much time here, but if you are enjoying this story and want to hear more StabbyQuest, please consider leaving us a review on the iTunes podcast app! Don't worry if you're shy; even just a star review helps! If you're listening on Podbay, Google Play, /and/ iTunes, come say hi on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook! Enjoy the episode!
Welcome back! The gang makes it out of Tickwood and gets back to Sandpoint to tie up some loose ends, and start their bad news deliveries to all of their contacts. Enjoy the episode!
Stabby New Year! Returning to the gang as they exited the mysterious door with the symbol, the gang tell Aluin all about their mini excursion into the dark room. Taat, remembering that it's supposed to rain today, rushed to the window just in time to hear the rumbling of thunder announce the incoming storm...
Welcome back to StabbyQuest! And Pubby's origin story! This episode is a little special... We're going to revisit a few scenes from recent episodes, but from Pubby's perspective, and maybe catch a glimpse into why exactly Pubby is the way he is. To all our listeners, the cast of StabbyQuest wishes you a safe and happy holiday season. Enjoy the episode!
The gang finally gets the door open in the 3rd tower. Unfortunately, they aren't much closer to a, you might say, "complete" understanding... but... that's not really their style, is it?
The party is level 3! Tartarus is still missing, and the party has just discovered his scarf hung up on an outside part of the manor. With a new clue in hand, they set off to inspect the last unsolved mystery of Aluin's manor.
We return to our heroes as they continue the search for their missing party member, Tartarus. Just like real life, the gang goes to the pub to sort things out, keep a clear mind, and make a solid, actionable plan. ...
With the party fat, happy, and rested after their soiree in the courtyard, they wake in the manor the next morning. Anxious to start looking for the missing apprentice, they discover someone *else* has gone missing...
It's Episode *20*! Episode 20 is important for two reasons: 1: It's a nice milestone. 2: There's a good lesson here. Sometimes, to even a seasoned adventurer, a quarry may seem guaranteed. Now, most members of this StabbyQuest party are /not/ seasoned, and one of them forces the group to learn this lesson the hard way. This lesson is brought to you by the Neutral Good Alignment: Never judge a book by its cover.
The gang continues trying to unfold just what the hell is going on in the manor while they get a lesson in Time Travel from Aluin. Aluin still hasn't recovered from his experience, but he does have a theory, and a lead, for the gang to find his old apprentice...
Aluin's study, now unlocked, has provided little more than questions for the gang. But gaining access to Aluin has revealed one thing: the link between Aluin's old apprentice and the fellow they found at the bottom of the ship in Sandpoint Harbor is only getting stronger.
