They run companies, manage households, juggle a million responsibilities—and still find themselves accepting the bare minimum in love. Why? In this Summer of Love kickoff, Hilary calls out the quiet epidemic of high-achieving women settling for less in their relationships. From doing all the emotional labor to accepting the bare minimum in return, Hilary spells out what “crumbs” really look like, and why so many women accept them without even realizing it. The truth? Starving women eat crumbs. If you've spent a lifetime feeling emotionally underfed, even the smallest scrap of affection can feel like a meal. But that won't get you the love you want, and it's not your fault. The fix? Stop looking outward, and start filling yourself up from within. If you're ready to quit the chase and start receiving real love, this episode is your wake-up call.   Episode Highlights: The subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs you're accepting crumbs Why blaming men misses the point entirely How emotional deprivation starts early—and shows up in dating The difference between chasing love and attracting it What it actually takes to become the woman who won't settle   Episode Breakdown: [00:00] Why Strong Women Settle for Crumbs in Love [00:56] Signs You're Settling for Less in Relationships [02:10] How It Feels When You Accept Less Than You Deserve [03:01] The Real Problem Isn't Him—It's You [04:07] How Early Experiences Shape Your Standards [05:32] The Solution: Heal, Fill, and Stop Settling [07:10] Learn How to Get What You Want   Stop chasing scraps and start receiving the whole damn cake. Beeb Birtles was born Gerard Bertelkamp in 1948, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Beeb is a celebrated musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist. As a founding member of iconic bands such as Zoot, Mississippi, and the Little River Band, Birtles has left an indelible mark on the music industry, both in Australia and internationally. His story is one of remarkable transition—from his Dutch heritage to becoming an influential figure in Australian rock.Gerard Bertelkamp, better known by his stage name Beeb Birtles, was born into a Dutch family in post-war Amsterdam. His father was a skilled carpenter and building contractor, while his mother shared a love for music that would influence her son's career. In 1959, the Bertelkamp family embarked on a life-changing journey - emigrating to Australia. Settling in Adelaide, South Australia, the family embraced their new home, which provided fertile ground for young Gerard's passion for music to flourish. While attending high School in Adelaide, Beeb formed his first band, Times Unlimited. This group evolved into Down the Line, where he began honing his craft by covering popular English Mod songs. In 1967, Birtles joined the influential band Zoot as the bassist and vocalist. Zoot gained popularity with its energetic performances and hits like a rock-infused version of The Beatles' “Eleanor Rigby.”Zoot's success propelled Beeb into the limelight, but the band disbanded in '71, paving the way for new musical endeavours. Beeb then formed the duo Frieze with fellow Zoot member (the late) Darryl Cotton, which marked another chapter in his early career. In '72, Beeb joined the folk-rock group Mississippi, which later transformed into the Little River Band (LRB) in 1975. As a founding member, Beeb played a pivotal role in crafting the band's harmonious rock sound, contributing to their global success. Hits like “Reminiscing,” “Help Is on Its Way,” and “Lonesome Loser” cemented the band's reputation as one of Australia's greatest musical exports. Beeb remained with the Little River Band until 1983, during which they sold millions of records worldwide. After leaving LRB, Birtles collaborated with Graeham Goble, another LRB alum, to form the duo Birtles & Goble, releasing the album The Last Romance. He later pursued solo projects, including the 2000 album Driven by Dreams. In 2002, Birtles reunited with former LRB members Glenn Shorrock and Graeham Goble to form Birtles Shorrock Goble, performing LRB classics alongside new material.Beeb Birtles' contributions to music have earned him widespread recognition. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to music and inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2004 alongside his Little River Band colleagues. He was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia “for significant service to the performing arts as a singer, songwriter and musician”.Despite his success in Australia and beyond, Beeb remains deeply connected to his Dutch roots. Today he resides in Nashville, USA where he continues to write and produce music. He has written an autobiography called 'Everyday of My Life" and his passion for music hasn't waned at all.Join us during this episode as Beeb shares the story of his incredible musical life through Zoot, Mississippi and the extraordinary Little River Band.

Co-Host Jason Fierstein (https://mountaintoppodcast.com/settling) With 8 billion people in the world, how can so many of us end up settling for a woman we never really wanted to begin with? On the surface, it would seem it's all about lacking the self-esteem to believe we deserve what we want. But there's more to it than that. My guest is psychotherapist and counselor for men Jason Fierstein from Phoenix, AZ. So then, what is the psychology surrounding a guy who habitually settles? Has he bought into the mindset that women he wants are 'out of his league' and he'd better not try to 'punch above his weight'? As horrifying as it sounds, can lack of success with girls from an early age set us up for a lifetime of settling? One would think on the surface that if we believe we're settling for someone, then we must be granting her the feeling of having hit the jackpot. But Jason would tell you the reality is often very different...and extra unfortunate for everyone involved. And then there are those other weird kind of relationships where someone indeed feels like they've hit the jackpot when their partner has clearly settled, and it has nothing to do with looks at all. Is settling more common among 'Mr. Nice Guys'? What is the most common fear-based thought that traps men into a cycle of settling? Next, the ever-present question of 'emotional availability' came up yet again. Does that mean you're doomed to settle no matter what? I mean, is ANY dysfunctional relationship, for that matter, necessarily a situation where either one or both partners has settled? What are the actual concrete signs of settling? And wait until you hear what I believe is the most shocking sign of all. Finally--and importantly--how can we make sure never to settle ever again? From his homeland in New Zealand to the Big Apple, to Boston, where he formed one of the most influential bands, Galaxie 500, to the sophisticated sounds of Luna with his now wife Britta Phillips, Dean Wareham has accomplished so much in his forty-plus-year career. Settling in New York in the mid to late 1970s, the veteran musician caught some of the most anarchic acts of the decade, such as The Ramones, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, before relocating to the city's sister scene in Boston to attend HU, where he met his future friends, and bandmates Naomi Yang, and Damon Krukowski, and the rest is, well you get the idea.  With one foot forward, a swift wind of whispering words left in his wake, Wareham doesn't look back. His poetic prolificacy is pure, passionate, and personal, and nothing is more liberating than keeping the tonal truck running. For this season premiere of The Self Portrait Gospel Podcast, we're honored to have Wareham on to tell his sonic story, while simultaneously exploring the past, present, and future of music and melodic memory. We touch on our shared obsession with Dylan, his new album "That's The Price Of Loving Me," returning to his home in LA, and certain events that have taken place, the legacy of Galaxie 500/Luna, and much more.

Catalyst Church of Carrollton - 6/23/25 "Why Are You Settling?" “When the boys became men, Esau was a good hunter, out in the fields. Jacob was a quiet man. He stayed near to the tents. Isaac liked to eat the meat from the wild animals that Esau killed. So he loved Esau. But Rebekah loved Jacob. One day, Jacob was cooking a meal. Esau came back from the country. He was very hungry. He said to Jacob ‘Quick, let me have some of that red food! I am very hungry.' (That is why Esau was also called Edom.) Jacob said, ‘You must first sell me your birthright.' Esau said, ‘Look, I am so hungry that I will die. Then my birthright will not help me at all!' Jacob said, ‘First, make a serious promise to me.' So Esau promised to sell his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and the soup made from lentils. Esau ate the food and he drank. Then he got up and he left. In that way, Esau showed that he did not think that his birthright was important.” ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭25‬:‭27‬-‭34‬ ‭EASY‬‬ You become consumed by the chase and grow numb to the things of God. Worn out by the pursuit, you settle and trade what matters most for what feels urgent in the moment. You settle when you strive to earn what God has already given you.

Because even when we know our standards… sometimes we still catch ourselves thinking: Maybe I could look past this He has everything else I'm looking for, maybe this one doesn't matter Am I asking too much? Maybe this is good enough… This week I'm taking you inside a moment where this happened in my own life very recently - with a story about Mr. South America. But this episode isn't actually about him. It's about what I noticed about myself and what it felt like to self-abandon.  And more importantly, I want you to use my experience to reflect on the times you said yes, when really you meant no… and the times you've been tempted to look past what you know to be true for you.  Here's what I want you to listen for in this episode…  What it sounds and feels like when you're about to settle… and how to catch it next time the feeling comes up How to recognise the very first red flag (and why it matters to pay attention to it) What it feels like in your body when something isn't aligned but your head doesn't know it yet How I've learnt to put myself out there without chasing or overgiving Why so many women wait for a man to bring aliveness to their life… and what I do instead to build that feeling for myself …and so much more. In this Toxic Talk conversation, I sits down with two young women to discuss modern relationship dynamics. The conversation dives into key topics including: • Marriage today – whether it's still a priority or just a social contract. • Cheating – if it's expected in today's dating culture and how people view loyalty. • Deal breakers – what instantly ends a relationship for them. • Body count – whether someone's sexual history should matter. • Settling down early – if women should prioritize marriage young or focus on personal growth first. The talk is raw, honest, and reflective of how many young adults view love and commitment in today's world.

Send us a textFairfax criminal defense lawyer Jonathan Katz knows that acquittals are great and often exhilarating, but trials can also bring risks. On this Beat the Prosecution episode, Jon Katz talks on his own about the art of obtaining favorable plea or settlement deals, which need to be backed up by the threat and strength of trial readiness. Settlements can only be earned, but are never owed to a criminal defendant.  Many Virginia criminal and DUI defendants expect to be offered a plea deal, and want it to be a desirable plea deal. However, nothing in the law requires a Virginia assistant commonwealth's attorney (prosecutor) to make a plea offer, nor for the accused to do anything other than proceed to trial. Jon Katz's parallel blog entry on this subject illustrates one of his successful plea negotiations that can be of help to you as a criminal defendant and your Virginia criminal defense attorney. With this settlement, we started out with a Virginia DUI / driving under the influence of alcohol prosecution alleging a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) over 0.20, which carries a mandatory ten days in jail. Jon reached an impasse with the prosecutor about going lower than the mandatory minimum five days in jail for a reduced BAC in the 0.15-0.20 range.Jon asked the prosecutor if he had read Roger Fisher's and William Ury's Getting to Yes on negotiated settlements, which emphasizes negotiating on goals versus positions. The impasse continued. Jon transcended the impasse by standing up, calling out the names of the two lead police officers in the case, telling them the great self improvement his client had pursued,  explained why the defendant's livelihood was at stake from the prosecutor's plea offer, and asked them for ideas on how this case could be settled without active jail. Without missing a beat, the arresting officer suggested three years of the ignition interlock device. The prosecutor went along with that, adding to complete forty-five community service hours...Fairfax criminal lawyer Jon Katz pursues your best defense against Virginia criminal & DUI prosecutions. Most people don't realize they've settled until one day they look around and wonder how they ended up with a life that doesn't quite fit. Nesha shares what surfaced during her final week in Paris - a mix of reflection, healing, and a moment of clarity that hit her during a mastermind retreat. When asked how she's shown courage in her life, she didn't have a tidy answer. But then her coach pointed out something she hadn't fully seen: she doesn't settle. And that realization cracked something open.   Nesha starts unpacking what settling actually looks like, not just staying in bad situations, but staying in ones that feel off. Maybe the job is fine on paper, the relationship is mostly okay, the paycheck shows up, but underneath it all, something feels misaligned. Have you ever caught yourself thinking, “I should be grateful for this,” while quietly feeling stuck?   Nesha tells real stories from her own life, like walking out of a job that dismissed her worth or letting go of a major client whose values didn't line up with hers. These weren't easy decisions, but they were necessary. And they led to more clarity, more energy, and a stronger sense of self.   If you've been thinking whether you're settling somewhere in your life, this episode might give you language for that feeling. What would it mean to stop settling, even just a little? Where might you be shrinking to make something work? Not settling doesn't always mean blowing everything up. Sometimes it means telling yourself the truth, making one clear decision, or choosing to trust your gut again. Because courageous dreamers don't settle. They pay attention. They make the hard calls. And they keep building a life that actually feels like theirs.   Episode Breakdown: 00:00 Paris Reflections 01:49 The Moment That Sparked This Episode 02:23 Why We Settle and What It Costs 05:07 Quitting a Job That Undervalued Me 07:45 Letting Go of a Misaligned Client 09:25 How to Spot Where You're Settling 10:54 The Slow Fade of Self-Compromise 12:10 You're Allowed to Want More 13:14 A Challenge for Courageous Dreamers Connect with Nesha:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/neshapai/ Website: https://www.neshapai.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/neshapai LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/neshapaicpa Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

As a naturally outgoing person, she sought out others from the neighborhood who were immigrants from India, but she wanted to expand her reach. She wholeheartedly took advantage of multiple services and resources, engaging in English as a Second Language classes and library programs for her daughter. She engaged in the PLTI (Parent Leadership Training Institute) program and even spoke at the capital in CT as an education advocate. This program dramatically changed her community engagement and her outlook on giving back through volunteering quickly evolved since it wasn't something she engaged in while living in her native country. She has taught at the Hindi school for years which teaches children the language and the various customs and traditions of India. She continues teaching in Florida after recently relocating there for her husband's career. She continues to seek community and builds connections wherever she goes. Mausumi's advocacy skills are quite developed and you've never met a more empowered woman with strong negotiating skills. She continues to engage and work toward her goals seeking to build a network along the way. She currently works in a preschool and is surely modeling curiosity for learning while preparing the next generation of leaders.

In today's Workday Playdate Snack, we're serving up some truth for anyone who's ever screamed into their steering wheel after a one-on-one like, “How does Brad STILL make more than me?” If you've ever been underpaid, undervalued, or under-celebrated—this snack is for you. The Problem: Here's the tea: Women are doing the absolute most. More emotional labor. More coordinating. More everything. And yet—less recognition, less pay, and fewer opportunities. We've been fed a narrative that if we just negotiate better or manifest harder, things will change. But let's be honest: the system wasn't built for us. So, we end up overachieving and under-receiving—and wondering why we're so exhausted. Here's a stat to file under “rage fuel”: Women still earn 82 cents to every dollar a man makes. And for women of color? The gap only grows. If you've ever thought, “Why does this feel so hard?”—you're not imagining it. You're experiencing a system designed to burn you out and keep you quiet. But here's the good news: We may not have built the system—but we sure as hell can break it. And rebuild it in our image. The Improv Hack to Try: The Reverse Résumé Game Here's how it works: Partner up with a trusted friend, or just hit record solo. Pretend you're your own agent. You've got 60 seconds to pitch yourself for a dream gig. The twist? You can't mention anything from your actual résumé. No titles. No companies. Just the real you.  Think: The time you calmed a furious client with zero drama. How you led a team through layoffs with compassion. That week you juggled three deadlines while your kid had the flu—and still delivered. Those stories? They're your power. This improv hack rewires your brain from “Do I deserve this?” to “Damn right I do—and here's why.” Coming up Wednesday: Feeling fired up? Then don't miss Wednesday's full episode—Episode 293: Pay Up with Reshma Saujani (yes, the founder of Girls Who Code + CEO of Moms First).
