The leaves are quickly turning amber and scarlet as we don our scarves and our stomachs long for something warm and cozy. Few things lift our spirits and internal temperatures like a hot bowl of soup. Tony and Chef Cindy set up the basics of cream and consommé based soups, the right tools for the job, and even a recipe for football season: Chef's beer and cheese soup. Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) was a soldier, newspaperman, poet, and short story writer. Settling in San Francisco, he became a journalist with Hearst's San Francisco Examiner. So savage were his critiques of corruption and human folly that he became known as “Bitter Bierce” and “the wickedest man in San Francisco.” (He loved the tags.) Here is his most famous story, set in the Civil War.

In life you either have to teach yourself to like what you have or you have to teach yourself to get what you like. In this short program you will be reminded of the importance of not settling for what is available and instead reaching for what is desirable in all areas of life that are important to you!
Bible Reading: Matthew 5:38-44; 26:47-53"Do you know what I'm gonna do about Josh tomorrow?" Jacob told his friend Liam as they walked around the side of Jacob's house. "I'm tired of that bully, and I've made up my mind to punch him if he bothers us!" As they came around a hedge of tall bushes, Jacob was surprised to see his grandfather reading in a lawn chair a few feet away. "See you tomorrow," Jacob said. Liam waved as he cut through the yard to his house. I hope Grandpa didn't hear me, Jacob thought. He knew how his grandfather felt about fighting."What was that about?" Grandpa asked.Jacob shrugged. "Just some stuff at school." He needed to change the subject. "What are you reading?""My Bible." Grandpa patted the cover. "I was reading verses that tell what happened when Jesus was arrested. He demonstrated to His followers that physical fighting is not the way to settle differences."Jacob sighed. "You heard what I said to Liam, didn't you?" "Yes, I did," said Grandpa. "And I wondered what made you want to fight.""I don't want to fight," said Jacob. "But every day this kid named Josh hangs around the soccer field. He grabs our ball if it gets anywhere near him, and he won't give it back until recess is over." "So punching him is the answer?" asked Grandpa."I don't know. I guess not. But what else can we do?""Have you talked to your teacher about it?" asked Grandpa. Jacob shook his head. "Think about how Jesus would want you to handle this problem," said Grandpa. "Even when He knew He was going to die, Jesus taught us to love--not hate. He willingly died on the cross for our sins because He loves us, and He wants us to love our enemies and forgive them." Grandpa paused. "Maybe there's some other reason why this boy hangs around the soccer field. Think about it."Later that evening, Jacob joined Grandpa on the porch swing. "I thought about what you said," Jacob told him. "I'm not going to fight. I'm going to try something else--something I should've done before.""What's that?" Grandpa asked."I'm going to ask Josh if he'd like to play with us!" -Rose R. ZedikerHow About You?What do you do when someone is mean to you? Do you yell at them? Hit or shove them? Do you encourage other kids to be unkind to that person?Or do you show them the love of Jesus? By taking the punishment for your sins on the cross, He made it possible for you to love your enemies the way He does. Instead of retaliating when someone is mean to you, think of how you can respond with the patience and kindness of Jesus.* *If someone is bullying you, it's important to seek help from a trusted adult. Today's Key Verse: Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (NIV) (1 John 3:18)Today's Key Thought:Show God's love--even to bullies

Casey Sowers followed 14 years of military service with a long career as a project manager in the private sector. During this time, he found himself fighting for equal shared custody of one of his daughters. Prior to this, it had never occurred to Casey to look into the custody industry, or to consider the custody rights of divorced fathers. But after the stress of his own custody battle seriously affected his mental health and job performance, he started to get more involved. Now, Casey is Executive Director of The Fathers' Rights Movement, a nonprofit made up of parents who advocate for 50/50 shared custody. At first, Casey thought the impact of his own custody battle was all psychological. However, when he stopped to think about how many times he'd had to take a call from a lawyer, or find evidence related to his case during work hours, he began to wonder whether custody battles are costing corporate America significant amounts of revenue. This motivated him to launch a pilot study to test this theory. So far, it includes 4,300 people. The groundbreaking study is being released to addresses the impact that inequality in the United States Family Court System has on corporations. This is the most comprehensive research project of its kind that observes the effects that shared parenting and the court system has on not only families, but also corporations and communities. Companies are growing increasingly concerned about the negative effects of divorce litigation on their employees and families, including emotional hardship and mental health issues that lead to decreased productivity and time away from work. Additionally, subpoenas are causing taxing issues for companies to produce massive amounts of documents and testimony under these duress cases. Casey hopes to prove that poor mental health — such as the kind he suffered during his custody battle — affects job performance. And since job performance is tied to corporate revenue loss, it's in corporate America's interest to advocate for a system in which fathers have a fair chance at gaining equal custody of their children. Tune in to this episode of Divorce, Healthy! with Ashley-Nicole Russell, Collaborative Attorney serving Beaufort, Raleigh, and Greenville, NC.

This past year has seen an onslaught of disruptions that call into question our ability to coexist with our environment. The devastating effects of climate change have arrived, and show no signs of abating. Flash flooding has swept across China and Northern Europe. The Eastern United States has been inundated by hurricanes of historic size. Record breaking heat waves and wildfires have decimated large swaths of Western North America. And a global pandemic continues to rage on. All of this begs the question, must we look elsewhere in our universe to ensure the survival of humanity? A growing movement of astrophysicists, biologists, and billionaire space enthusiasts believes our salvation does indeed lie offplanet. Supporters of this movement argue that we are on the cusp of technology that puts this possibility within reach, and that exploration and settlement to deal with issues of environmental instability and scarcity is nothing new. Settling the reachable regions of our universe is merely an extension of this age-old trend. But detractors of the plans to settle space dismiss it as an immeasurably expensive fever dream. In their minds, it would be far more prudent to invest our time and resources into fixing the problems here on Earth, the only known planet to host life. Beyond the massive technological advancements required, there are simply far too many unknowns about how and where life originated to assume it can be simply transported through the cosmos. Arguing for the motion is Milan Cirkovic, Research Professor at the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade and author of Global Catastrophic Risks. Arguing against the motion is Lord Martin Rees, Lord Martin Rees Astronomer Royal, former President of The Royal Society. He is the author of On the Future whose updated paperback edition is due out in October, and The End of Astronauts due out in March of 2022. Milan Cirkovic: “There are many human achievements which, almost by definition, could never be realized if humanity remains bound to Earth.” Lord Martin Rees: “It is a dangerous delusion to think that we could escape the Earth's problems by going to Mars." Settling, we do it for our own reasons. There are times to settle and times to soar. Consider a few ideas of ways to change from settle to living the life you want. Things to consider: 1. Where are you settling? 2. What do you want? 3. How can you plan to succeed? Episode Quotes: “To my fellow women: Please don't settle. Not in a job you hate, not in a town where you don't feel at home, not with friendships that aren't real, and especially, especially not with love.” ~ Marisa Donnelly “Know your worth” You must find the courage to leave the table if respect is not longer being served.” ~Tene Edwards “Don't you dare settle for fine!” Roy Kent; Ted Lasso https://www.thelazygeniuscollective.com

Their self-titled re-debut "Dead Billionaires EP" tackles themes of self-doubt, impermanence, and perseverance while capturing the frenetic and vibrant energy of their live set.

What is spiritual maturity? -Simply the process of becoming more like Christ (sanctification) -The whole point of having a faith is to grow in spiritual maturity & Christ likeness. -Think of a child, a 2 year old should act like a 2 year old we're okay with that. But if a 12 year is acting like a 2 year old there's a problem. We would say they are immature. -Being effective and fruitful in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus is the essence of spiritual maturity. Things to remember: Everyone is at different places in their walk. We shouldn't judge others but encourage & challenge them along their journey. We should remind baby believers of right and wrong from God's perspective. It's an ongoing process. Refinement never ends. Spiritual maturity requires a reordering of priorities. As Christians we have this power to submit to the spirit and be spirit led. “I don't mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me.” Philippians 3:12 NLT “No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead…” Philippians 3:13 NLT “By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:3 NLT “The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who fail to develop in this way are shortsighted or blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.” 2 Peter 1:8-9 NLT Dangers of dating when you are unequally yoked? What does the Bible say? Why does this matter? A. There is no spiritual harmony (the Bible clearly states this) “What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever?” 2 Corinthians 6:15 NLT “And what union can there be between God's temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.”2 Corinthians 6:16 NLT B. Bad company corrupts good character. Dating/marrying a non believer can and will hinder your walk. (Corinthians 15:33) C. Settling for a relationship that is not God centered will NOT strengthen your relationship with God. It will be a distraction & potentially cause you to fall away from God's will. Are you distracted or focused? D. When you choose to date someone, they are a potential marriage partner. You want to choose someone you desire to be on mission with. E. Is your purpose aligned with their purpose? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thefreedompodcast/message

On the 100th episode of the show, we channel our focus to this weekend's season opener in Foxboro against the New England Patriots. There is a lot of hype surrounding New England, mostly due to their Head Coach Bill Belichick, as well as a fresh faced rookie QB in Mac Jones. Is the hype worth buying into? In today's show, we look at Mac Jones' game, and compare it to Tua's. Who should be the better NFL quarterback? We settle that, as well as look into just how "dominant" a Coach Belichick truly is without one Tom Brady. This is a fun one, so be sure to listen, let's dive in!

(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) We start with the intention to cultivate awakened qualities, then have a period of settling, followed by opening up experience and particularly noticing any reactivity (habitual grasping and pushing away) and awakened qualities, such as mindfulness, concentration, equanimity, joy, etc.
For Season 3 Episode 10 “All or Nothing,” I chat with Shawn from The Tough Titties Podcast about tough life choices. We attempt to answer Carrie's wonderings on: “Is it possible that we've gotten so spoiled by choices that we've become unable to make one? That a part of us knows that once you choose something, one man, one great apartment, one amazing job, another option goes away. Are we a generation of women who can't choose just one from Column A? Did we have too much to handle or was Samantha right, can we have it all?” Topics include: Having it all vs having someone to share it with Why wanting a partner isn't enough The problem with dating apps Settling vs compromise Going back to an ex Follow Shawn and The Tough Titties Podcast: - https://www.instagram.com/thetoughtittiespodcast/ - https://twitter.com/toughtittiespod - https://www.tiktok.com/@shawn_jacobson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sextnthecity/ // https://www.instagram.com/samnthacity/

University of California (NOT California University...you'll see) faculty member Bobby Krut returns to talk about Sandra Oh's new English-department half-hour dramedy on Netflix, The Chair. We discussed the almost-perfect pacing and casting, underrating Amanda Peet at your peril, whether Holland Taylor should get a spinoff, and more. Then we went Around The Dial with Nine Perfect Strangers, Messyness, I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson, and Unforgotten before Doug tasked us with adding a Russian Roulette-style trapdoor to a TV moment. Sarah wouldn't let the bird rest in her Canon presentation for a fifth-season Cheersepisode; true crime won and Mike Richards lost; and the truth was once again stranger than fiction in a Game Time animé sequel. In podcasting terms, that makes us positively Methuselahian. Since the start of EHG, our listeners have asked if we had a tip jar or donation system and we'd look at each other and say surely that is a joke, people don't pay other people to do podcasts. We'd email them back "Ha ha ha, good one, Chet" and go about our business. Now we are told this is a real thing that real nice people do. Value for value? In today's topsy turvy world? It's madness but that good kind of madness, like when you wake up at 3:15am and clean your house. Or something. In all seriousness, we are humbled by your continued prodding to get a Patreon page up for EHG and here it is! Extra Hot Great on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
