D&D does combat well. It can slow down time and can be more or less crunchy than you like, but it definitely creates aa play area that a new DM can handle during a session. Unfortunately, while the books talk about the other two pillars of roleplay, there isn't a lot for the new DM to latch onto to understand the best way to run a seamless session. In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave sit down to answer a listener question about the best ways to create and run all the non-combat encounters that the characters will become involved with and how to develop them beyond “roll me an x” situation.1:15 DM Dave reminisces on the Time Life Rock ‘n Roll Era CD collection.3:15 Listener question: a new DM asks about the best ways to lend gravitas to non-combat encounters without it just boiling down to a dice roll.4:38 Tip #1: What do your players like?5:30 Tip #2: Prepare ahead and let the players guide the movement forward.6:50 Tip #3: Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. 11:15 Tip #4: Mini-games are an easy way to let the players roleplay while also rolling dice.12:45 Tip #5: The evolution of the game reflects the evolution of DMing… give yourself some time to develop.14:00 Tip #6: Lean on some resources that help newer DMs to understand how adventures can run between all the pillars of play.15:11 Tip #7: What are the characters objectives/mission/quest? Let that guide you.18:20 Tip #8: Story prompts and campfire tales… fuel for roleplay.20:00 Tip #9: Go easy on yourself… you will screw up.23:30 Tip #10: Rest times are a great time to spur talking amongst themselves.24:40 Tip #11: The Lever NPC… use them to spur forward momentum.25:50 Tip #12: What do your favorite movies, series, and books do to create “non-combat encounters.”26:45 Tip #13: Narrative side quests.29:50 Tip #14: Skill Challenges.33:35 Tip #15: Create Open-Ended scenarios… developing inciting incidents.37:15 Tip #16: “Sandbox” and “Railroad”: It's not either/or… it's always AND.39:12 Final Thoughts.

Tom had COVID, so we start things off by pondering the effects of COVID-19 on roleplaying gamers. In the Coyote's Aegis campaign, the heroes infiltrate Ashgrain Outpost to free some serpentine slaves and look great doing it! Then Magill has too many ales at the tavern and goes on a ramble contemplating the best bits of different RPG systems that we've discussed on the show before. In the Danger Room, Magill talks about the monster hunting-and-eating RPG called Wilderfeast while a bunch of hammering happens in the background (sorry about that). Also, does anyone besides Magill use Skill Challenges anymore? Find us on Facebook! All music composed by Vince Nitro.

On this lesson of Detentions and Dragons, Josh and Matt talk about a narrative driven way to play out a scene in D&D, the skills challenge. They discuss the basic mechanics of skills challenges, rules for the challenge and model one themselves. There is also bonus music and sound effects! Some people we'd also want to credit in this lesson. D&D 4th edition for introducing the skills challenge mechanic. Rodrigo D. Lopez for his upgraded rules for skills challenges. ### Why do we need mechanics for it? If it doesn't exist in the mechanics, it's not part of the game. Without rules, it's all make-believe and agreements (the rules are an agreement as well, but one that is external to us). ### Use the old mechanics in new and novel ways (3:45) You want to make meeting a new monster more exciting? Add the template "unknown" to every encounter with a new creature. Eran used the chase sub-system from [Savage Worlds](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/102528/Savage-Worlds-Deluxe-Explorers-Edition?affiliate_id=29668) to simulate a search of a haunted fort (there's also a chase in [Curse of the Crimson Throne](https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Curse_of_the_Crimson_Throne)) For pathfinder or D&D: Add new feats/conditions and bonuses, or reasons to gain advantages and disadvantages. A necromancer who walks around with her zombie dad; techincally a Warlock with the Ranger Beastmaster archetype. ### Add new sub-mechanics to support new narrative concepts (9:50) In [PbtA](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powered_by_the_Apocalypse) games you create a custom move. This can be tricky, so many rulebooks suggest guidelines. Psionics in D&D 3rd edition, Monks in virtually every game system ever. Managing a rebellion in [Hell's Rebels](https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Hell%27s_Rebels). Having many subsystems is not encouraged. It makes it tricky to maintain game balance, and keeping things clear and fair for everyone. ### Take mechanics that specialize in the things you want, from other systems (16:00) The Madness Meters from [Unknown Armies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unknown_Armies) Long term injuries in Fate and/or [Mistborn Adventure Game](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/97476/Mistborn-Adventure-Game-Digital-Edition?affiliate_id=29668). The [stress system from Fate](https://fate-srd.com/fate-core/stress-consequences). Adding a new mechanic is disruptive to the game balance as intended by the game designer. Aim to only do this with a system you know very well. [The Dresden Files RPG](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/80984/Dresden-Files-RPG-Your-Story?affiliate_id=29668); [Dresden Files Accelerated](http://drivethrurpg.com/product/213844/Dresden-Files-Accelerated?affiliate_id=29668); Find more about Dresden Files in our episode about [top selling RPGs](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/35e72b2e691a26/). [Skill Challenges in D&D 5](http://www.dmsguild.com/product/242206/Almost-Heroic-Presents--Skill-Challenges) ### Tell about it, away from the table (25:30) If it's around the table, we expect mechanics; if it's in emails, or a post, we're fine with reading a story. However, the default should be to [act during the game](https://dwarves.podiant.co/e/35dc2e1458f9c0/), so it's better to use this tecnhique only after consideration. ### Taking the load off (27:50) Uri - play to your parties strengths, paladin as a wall of Remove Disease.
