The International Panel on Climate Change - otherwise known as the IPCC - just released their Sixth Assessment Report and it is pretty much all the various news outlets, politicians, and talking heads can discuss. But, it's a big report. The full report is thousands of pages long with hundreds of authors and well over 10,000 source citations. When all the headlines seem to say is something like IPCC Report Confirms We're All Gonna Die, it can be difficult to parse out what is important, what is relevant to you, and how much of the catastrophizing to believe.  That's where Dr. Sam Montano, the disasterologist herself, comes in. She's back to tell us what this report means, which parts she and other researchers are focused on, how alarmed we should be, and what the average consumer can do. We discuss issues like the California wildfires, the Line 3 pipeline in Minnesota, and even touch upon the current wave of COVID resurgence here in the United States.  Find more of Dr. Montano's work here. As we traverse these wild times, we're talking about re-emergence, negotiating boundaries and body wisdom - aren't we always? How do we stay centered as we negotiate boundaries when the news is constantly changing?  What staves off the spiral? How do we feel safe and free? I have some ideas!  So in today's podcast we are regulating our nervous system babyyyy with an embodiment chew! ”Whats that you might ask?” possibly with a screw-faceIt's a mini exploration and practice we can do together, with some storytime seasoning of course!”Why a chew?!” I don't know, i guess it's cause i don't like telling people what to do, rather, invite them to explore something in their own way, adding their own seasoning. Whatever happens on this journey, i hope it will meet you where you're at, and invite some spacemaking. And you know, i always love to hear from you, so reach out to me! Greg and Ed discuss some negative expat stereotypes - roughly the person you (probably) don't want to become while living in Thailand...at least forever. We all fall prey to stereotypes sometimes - they have to come from somewhere - but if you're not careful, you can become comfortable with some of these lifestyles and before you know it, they come to define your new identity in your new home, and suddenly you're known as The Whiner, or The Apologist. And that's just the beginning! Heaven forbid that people start to know you as The Premature Pontificator, or The Creep, The Slob, The Bubble Boy or The Player. Like we said, it's hard to escape most of these all the time, but Bangkok's mai-pen-rai lifestyle is addictive, and trust us - before you know it, a decade has gone by and you're still wearing that old Chang singlet out to dinner that you bought when you first arrived on Khao San Road (that'd be The Slob). Have a listen and see how Greg and Ed define these common tropes.  Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. Paganism isn't immune to any number of societal ills. While the same issues that plague the culture at large exist in all parts of our community in some way, it is groups associated with Norse Paganism - and all its related and parallel names, Asatru, Heathenry, Germanic Reconstructionism, and more - that most often come under scrutiny. White supremacy. Transphobia. Homophobia. Xenophobia. When one sees a headline from inside our community mentioning Heathens or Asatru or the like, there is a bit of white knuckling that happens before you click the mouse as you wonder...which one is it this time?    It can be difficult to navigate an authentic spiritual journey into Heathenry because of its associations with these and other issues, and those who do are often afraid to tell others they are Heathens for fear that they'll immediately be labeled a Nazi, or at least a Nazi sympathizer. However, one person is doing just that on the podcast Heathen's Journey.  Siri, the creator and host of the show, is a queer, non-binary practitioner who is hoping to reclaim the moniker of Heathen from those who would use it as a racist cudgel. They are my guest on episode 175, and we have a wide-ranging and discussion that doesn't shy away from topics such as why white supremacy seems to go hand in hand within Heathenry, the value of reclaiming symbols that have been appropriated by actual Nazis, and what it's like working as an ambassador for modern Paganism and Heathenry specifically in the Minnesotan prison system. Get more from Siri here. If you like this show and want to support it, there are a number of ways to help. Consider liking and sharing it on social media. This is Dr. Valla's second appearance on Grief 2 Growth. In May 2020, Dr. Valla and I spoke about healing our inner child within. In this episode, we focus on difficult life situations. Are they planned? If so, why would we do that?!The topic of this episode was inspired by the origin of Dr. Valla's work, which is working with disabled children. Why would a person choose to have a disabled child? Why would someone choose to come to this planet disabled? Rebecca is a Psychiatrist, has been a lifelong spiritual seeker, and has also been involved for nearly 10 years with IANDS, an organization devoted to Near-Death and related Experiences. She has worked extensively with developmentally disabled children and adults, both before and after her training as a Psychiatrist. There is a grief experience that is very common when a child is born with a disability. Sometimes, that child's developmental problem isn't known at birth but becomes known at a later time. The grief appears whenever loved ones realize that their child will have a growth path that is not as expected for most of their peers.Sometimes, their survival is not assured or is thought to be shortened for the long term. Sometimes they require a great deal of care both medically and to meet their basic survival needs at home, which requires intenseadjustment on the part of family and others. Some situations require a decision at some point along the way, as to whether the child can best be cared for in the home. There may be talk of a need for "institutionalized" care. The poignancy of the pain of these families may obscure the opportunities for growth, love and connection, and joy. There is a process of healing and learning that demands work, and brings with it the experience of self-discovery and personal expansion.ℹ️ https://www.rebeccasvallamd.comAnnouncing my new audio series free to Patrons.www.patreon.com/grief2growth to joinSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/grief2growth)

Colin Moriarty has been working in games media for nearly 20 years. Starting as a technical writer for IGN, Colin worked his way up to editor at IGN. Later, he would leave IGN for Kinda Funny and ultimately starting Last Stand Media, Colin has offered valuable insight into the world of gaming for years. In this episode, Colin shares about how reviewing games works, why Super Mario Sunshine is better than Super Mario 64, the hurdles conservatives face within games media, and more. Colin also shares about how his perspective on God has changed since Fireside Chats, where he released a series of episodes interviewing pastors, mormons, and Christians alike. Trigger Witch also gets a fair amount of love in it's unique "Legend of Zelda with guns" style gameplay. Discussion (21:23) We wasted no time getting into the discussion for this episode. Colin spends time discussing how reviews work for video games, as well as his stance on numbered ratings on reviews. We spend some time discussing the shift in culture of games media and ask if a conservative voice can even make it. From there, I ask Colin about his perspective on God, and if it's changed since his series of episodes of Fireside Chats focusing on religion. Sophie (age 7) and Ellie (age 5) decide to tell the history of flight. ----more---- We start off with legendary tales of flight like the story of Icarus. Icarus and his father need to escape a castle. They build some wings out of feathers and wax and flap them to escape the castle. They start flying but then Icarus flies too high. As he gets close to the sun his wax melts and his wings fall off. He falls to the ground with a splat. This story actually tells us a lot about what people thought you needed to do in order to fly. People looked at birds and thought that what you needed to do was to fly like a bird. They would make big wings and try and flap with them. They did not realise that a person is much heavier than a bird so you would need to make a huge wing that flapped really fast. One inventor called Leonardo da Vinci studied how flying might work. He was a famous artist and inventor 500 years ago. He even made a design for something that he called an Ornithopter but which was a lot like a helicopter. However, it was never built. 300 years ago people started to come with ideas for balloons. The Montgolfier brothers invented the hot air balloon. This saw a fire lit in a basket. The hot air then filled a balloon which was above the basket. The hot air rose and this made the balloon take off. They first experiment by putting animals in the basket. Later they put people inside. The Balloon was very good at going high up. However, it could not fly in a particular place. It was carried by the wind. So it was not that useful. Later a man called George Cayley realised that what was important about birds was not how they could fly, but instead how they could glide. He studied the science behind gliding and made many gliders over the next 50 years. However, what was really needed was an engine in the glider. Then it could take off more easily and stay in the air for longer. This is where the Wright brothers come in. They were American brothers who were very interested in flying. They read up lots about it. They also realised that if could move the wings slightly that would help with take off. This is where modern planes get the ideas for the flaps from. They spent a long time trying to make the perfect glider. They they put a small engine in it and had the engine work some propellers. The plane took off. But it didn't fly for long. So they brothers spent the next two years working to improve the plane. This time it worked. The plane flew for 40 minutes. The Wright brothers had cracked flying. Now planes are part of our everyday lives. We use them for holidays, transport, war, fighting fires, exploring and more. Patrons' Club If you liked this episode then please do join out patrons Club. In this episode, we are joined by historian, professor, and author of the book France in the Second World War, Chris Millington. With him, we take a deep, reevaluating look at the 1940 fall of France, questioning the popular narrative of French cowardice, lack of preparation, and inferior military capability as being the reasons for their defeat. From internal struggles amongst generals, to recognizing that it was not just a French failure, but rather an Allied failure, to looking at how the events during the Summer of 1940 impacted politics around the world in the years after, we explore what makes the fall of France History's Most Misunderstood Defeat. What's unique about our Patreon feed is that your actually get something in return like interviews with authors, historians, actors from the movie Gettysburg and more. Depending on the tier you choose, you can get 2-4 episodes a month, videos and other special episodes created just for our Patrons. On Patreon, we don't shy away from controversial topics or opinions because we believe that, to learn, we must be willing to be uncomfortable and that requires open communication. So, we invite you to become a patron and learn with us by clicking here.   ABOUT THIS EPISODE This episode was recorded at our first studio in the offices of Destination Gettysburg. Eric was not yet a part of the team. Bob Steenstra was still co-host and Matt's allergies were evident in his voice. Here is the original show description: Dr. Ashley Whitehead Luskey is the assistant director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College and heads up an ambitious project called "Killed at Gettysburg". KAG sets students on a journey back into the lives of the men killed during the battle. After their research is complete, the students create profiles on the project's website . Dr. Luskey sat down with Bob and I to discuss the project's history and goals. We think you'll find this fascinating.
