Every player wonders at one point in their adventuring career, "What would my adventurer do if they were evil?". Would they be the ultimate BBEG of a campaign or just a mid-level boss fight? We wonder this a lot and we are here to discuss this today! P.S. We apologize for Braden's audio, his mic fell down the tavern cellar and we are trying to still get it back from the Rat-Kin who live below. We rip open Pathfinder 2E's NPC Core like a loot chest at midnight—all killer, no filler, just gun-wielding witches, charming villains, and side characters spicy enough to steal the spotlight (and maybe your party's gold). #Pathfinder2E, #NPCCoreRules, #PF2GMFuel NPC Core (affiliate link) Show Notes In this episode, the RPGBOT crew opens up Pathfinder 2E's NPC Core and immediately gets lost in the endless possibilities of building bartenders who could solo a dragon and criminals with the fashion sense of a runway model. They dig into the  shockingly well-organized stat blocks, and the book's philosophy of making every town guard, blacksmith, or shady fence into a potential campaign highlight. The hosts explore how NPCs are no longer just glorified exposition dumpers or sacrificial goblin #3—they're diplomats, villains, witches with guns (yes, that's a thing), and essential storytelling tools that add flavor and chaos to any scene. Need someone to warn your party that they're about to die horribly? The NPC Core has a stat block for that. Want a non-combatant spy with more plot hooks than a pirate ship? It's in there too. They highlight how the book helps GMs create NPCs that aren't just throwaway extras but fully customizable agents of drama, comedy, or world-ending terror. From themed spell lists to the new relationship subsystem (think: dating sims, but with more stabbing), the crew dives into mechanics and storytelling tricks that make your NPCs actually matter. The episode crescendos in a live-build exercise where the hosts create an unforgettable NPC—part crime boss, part matchmaker, all chaos—and demonstrate how NPC Core can help any GM bring wild new energy to the table. Key Takeaways Monster Hunter Wilds: Yes, it influenced this book, and no, you don't need a 12-foot greatsword to enjoy it. Organized, Beautifully: Stat blocks so clean, you'll cry tears of efficiency. Non-Combatant, Not Non-Important: Some of the best NPCs don't fight—they ruin lives socially. Custom Archetypes Galore: Build a frogfolk librarian who also moonlights as a necromancer. No one can stop you. Gun Witch: Just... gun witch. You're welcome. Villains with Vibes: Give your BBEG a tragic backstory, a fashion-forward cloak, and a snarky catchphrase. Diplomacy is OP: Talking your way through an ambush is now a viable strategy—unless the dice hate you. Magical Shenanigans: Spells aren't just for combat—use them to cook, sneak, charm, or fake your own death for tax reasons. Advanced Relationship Mechanics: Because your players will romance the bartender, and now there's a chart for that. Sample Organizations: Pre-built groups so your GM notes don't look like the scribbles of a sleep-deprived conspiracy theorist. Themed Spell Lists: Pre-curated magic menus for fast flavor and fewer tears. NPC Advancement: Level up your innkeeper until they're ready for the final boss fight. So You Wanna Be a Dungeon Master

This week we're taking on a walk on the dark side, because we're going over the pinnacle of villains that is the BBEG! The vast majority of tabletop roleplaying games include a conflict that the main characters have to overcome. And in most of those games, that conflict includes some sort of antagonist. These are your monsters, your ne'er'dowells, your villains, and of course your Big Beaver Energy Guy… oh.. Hold on, I'm hearing from our producers that BBEG actually stands for Big Bad Evil Guy.. hmm, look at that. Anyway! And remember to give us 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ AND a positive review! Play through an adventure and you'll realize how strangely time can move in your D&D campaign. Longtime friend of the show, Dr. DM (Jason) returns with a question about his ocean-based campaign that we discussed in Episode 148. His question revolves around how quickly leveling can affect the passage of time in the adventure. In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave discuss the strange way time can move in your campaign and how to best handle that. Is your game a non-stop march towards the inevitability of the BBEG or is it more a classic-type of campaign with a bunch of adventures linked together? As DM Tony wisely states, “The passage of time is not nearly as important as the passage of good sessions.”1:25 Dr. DM returns with the ongoing ocean-based campaign that started from our Shipping Up To Boston episode!4:08 How does time work in your campaign? One crazy summer or lasting over decades of the characters lives? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: DM Parenting, published by Shoshannah Tekofsky on July 17, 2024 on LessWrong. Cause no one will question your ethics if you refer to yourself as a Dungeon Mom. I snort experimentation to feel alive. It's a certain type of orientation to life, completely at odds with all parenting advice about predictability and routine. Enter DM parenting. Where you approach every parenting task as a Dungeons and Dragons session where you are shepherding a team of pure outliers on the enthusiasm-skill spectrum through the Sisyphisian ordeal of rolling their toothbrush up hi … no, wait, stop that! Anyway. You need them to fight the BBEG cause otherwise you are not having fun, but who says they wouldn't rather murder hobo their way through the local dairy supply chain? As a DM, you have to juggle an objective, your own enjoyment, and the enjoyment of your players. This is basically parenting. Of course, as a DM, you generally play with people who have opted in while playing according to a rule set someone lovingly crafted for you. Luckily kids love to play, and if you pick the right rule set, they will probably be game. Except no one wrote any rule sets on how to DM kids into their pyjamas. Till now. My kids are young - 3 and 5. These rules work far better for the older of the two. I assume they will keep working better till they become old enough to build their own rules, but here is where we got in the last 2 weeks or so: Bedtime Rules Peekaboo You close your eyes and keep them closed while your kid still needs to get ready for bed. But of course, you try to check if everything is going ok by blindingly reaching out your hands. I'd recommend exaggerating your ineptitude at determining if the little one has actually put on their pajama. It can also be fun to let them advise you on how to navigate the environment. The perspective taking training on this one seems to lead to additional giggles. Tickle Station Every time your kid does a bedtime task, they can dock into the tickle station and get tickled by you! Personally I made a tickle station by just reaching out my arms and pretending I was a booth. Some warning here that some kids do not like to be tickled so explicitly check if they find this fun, and also, crucially, let them come to you to receive tickles. In our case, my kiddos love being tickled. It has gotten to the point that the tickle station has become a bit of an emotional regulation option with me and the kids now, cause it helps them out of a funk quite easily. Walk a Mile… … in momma's (or papa's) shoes. Just let them wear your shoes while going through the entire bedtime routine. This was kind of amusing to watch. Might be important to keep them away from stairwells and the like. Duel Shots Grab two clothes pins and an elastic band. Hook the elastic band around the (closed) front of the clothes pin and pull back. You can now shoot rubber bands without them snapping your fingers. For the rule set, you both get one clothes pin. For each step of the bed time routine you shoot your kid with the elastic band and they can shoot you back. Obviously, this can hurt quite a bit, so as an opt out either of you can shout "mirror" and then the other person will have to shoot the mirror image of you instead. You may now discover if your child has ever shot an elastic band before. Mine had not. The mechanics of aim and force were a complete mystery to her. If you find yourself in this situation then an updated rule set is that the shooter can keep going till they hit. The result in our household was a lot of delight and the absolute slowest bedtime routine yet. Ghost You wear a blanket over your head and try to catch the kid while they are putting on their pyjama. If they get too excited they may fail to put on their pyjama all together. If they get sad about being caught, you can tr...

As we learned from the AD&D release, Deities & Demigods, “If you stat it, players will kill it.” So, what do you do if you want to place an unbeatable Kaiju-type monster, like Godzilla, into your game world? Something way more fearsome than a Tarrasque. A complete force of nature that shapes the entire world and every adventure in it. Something that you can't just “punch really hard.”In this episode, Tony, Chris, and Dave respond to a listener's question, “have you ever put a monster in your campaign that cannot be defeated?” and enter into a real time brainstorming session as we discuss how we've used it as DMs as well as played with it as players in our own games.1:45 DM Jim's Brainstorm Topic2:25 Are these the seeds of where the endgame of your campaign is or are you just hazing your players?3:50 Think less about defeating the unbeatable monster and more about foiling their plans.5:55 The Scroll of Tarrasque Summoning from Rime of the Frostmaiden and our tangent into the idea of WOTC playtesting adventures before they release them.8:10 “If you stat it, players will kill it.”8:55 Our return to the Woodstock Wanderers campaign and the unkillable, flying spaghetti monster that was Ghatanothoa.12:15 Be careful dropping this type of monster into your game if your players singular idea is “Frontal Assault!”17:45 The idea that this type of creature is not “good” or “evil” but just a force of nature. How to Write a DND Heist One ShotWelcome back to How to Be a Better DM, I'm your mastermind for today, Justin Lewis, and you're here with me to learn how to tell better stories for yourself and your friends as you DM sessions of Dungeons and Dragons 5e. aHow to Be a Better DM is presented to you by Session 0 Studios, D&D podcasts and shows to sate your ever deepening hunger.I'm excited for today's show because it's actually something that I've been working to improve personally. I'll explain a little later in today's show, but I'm really excited to get into today's show. Before we do, I don't know who needs to hear this, it's probably you, the DM listener that I'm currently pointing at, but you need to hear this. You're doing wonderfully. You may think you aren't a great DM or you may have had a session recently that was less than encouraging, but know that you are doing well. First of all, most players could never do as well as you are as a DM. Second, being a DM is hard and it is a skill that requires practice. You're doing splendidly so don't give up.Now, I hope that wasn't too sappy for you because today we are going to talk about doing a DND Heist One Shot! Why Do One Shots at AllBefore we talk about heists, I want to take a moment and talk about why you would even consider doing a one shot. Back on episode 82, https://session0studios/captivate-podcast/reserve-1/, we talked about 10 reasons why you should one shots. Let me just summarize one of the points and also explain why this particular topic appeals to me. You see, with one shots you can try new mechanics, and new scenarios that might be intimidating to pull off in your actual campaign. Doing one shots challenges you.Why Do a Heist One ShotNow the next question is why you should do a heist one shot?Well the first answer is that, it's fun. Think about all of the heist movies you've seen. There's the Italian Job. Oceans 11, 12, 13 and so on, Army of Theives (which if you've seen, then in our upcoming live play Show, Calignos, the character played by Tanner Weyland, my cohost on this podcast, resembles the main character of Army of Thieves so much it's delightful). The list of fun movies is endless. The second reason is that I think a heist, more than other types of one shots, is somewhat more technically challenging. Let me explain. In order to make any particular one shot as good as it can be, there requires a certain level of believability. You must also strike a balance of difficulty. If the crown jewel of Tethrezrembot is only moderately difficult to steal, then your party will likely think the one shot was more a joke than an actual challenge. To that end, the thing that the party is trying to heist has a perceived value proportional to the difficulty of stealing that object. That means if the party is to believe the value of the target, then the defenses need to be difficult and believable. Also the party will want a sense of accomplishment.Original Characters or New Characters? So the first question you need to ask when doing any one shot is whether or not it will be canon in your campaign or not, and whether or not your players will create new characters. These are generally two separate questions. For example, in my current campaign, I am planning an extra special one shot for my players. This is a spoiler so if any of my players are listening please stop listening. In my campaign the BBEG is named Dreamtaker, and he was a very powerful Fey Creature who was split into pieces in order to be stopped previously. The pieces of Dreamtaker are all items. In my current campaign the party has fought against Dreamtaker a little here and there, and one of the characters has actually been possessed by Dreamtaker essentially and works for...
