If you've read the Gospels then you know that sometimes Jesus says some difficult things. Not everything He says can be spoken in sweet, melodic tones, but we try anyway. If you're interested in exploring the difficult sayings of Jesus through some light
There's no amount of sweetener that can soften the intensity of this flavor. Jesus calls everyone to turnaround or they'll be just like them dudes who perished in the worst way. Turns out how gruesome someone's death doesn't necessarily equal how terrible they were in life. Jesus lets us know that change is an agent of suffering and not changing is also an agent of suffering so… which suffering will we choose and when? Join us for another syrupy slide into the deep end on this episode of SJ!P.
Special guest pastor Chris Wimberly from Selah Hills Church graces our podcast in this episode about the Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees. Jesus goes verbal MMA on these guys with the Seven Woes, but will the Pharisees tap out? Will this brood of vipers see the light? Join us as Jesus gets out his metal detector and we keep a weather eye out for approaching gators on this most excellent next installment of Sweet Jesus!
In Episode 2 of Season 2 I have the help of Lead Pastor Nathan Brown as we unfold a much deeper, better and sweeter version of the Parable of the Talents than you have ever heard! Pastor Nate brings some powerful insights to parable you may have heard preached a 100 times. But you've never heard it laid out like this. Kick back w/a glass of sweet tea and soak in the revelation on this special episode.
Finally!! After much anticipation and incredible patience from our vast fan base, Sweet Jesus returns with Season 2! An increasingly epic set of shows that continues to reshape the way we hear the words of Jesus. In this first episode of SJ!P Season 2 we explore one of Jesus' most violent moments. Jesus is clearing out the temple, knocking over tables and braiding a whip. Soul Pastor and sole pastor of Mission Liberty Hill, Rev. Michael Cofer helps us unpack why Jesus ain't so sweet on selling wares up in the temple complex.
“You've heard that it was said…” What does this phrase mean anyway? Who was Jesus talking to and about what? Why is Wayne Gretzky involved? What's a zealot? This might be truly the sweetest of the most difficult things Jesus ever says. What does perfect look like? Join us as we discuss God's idea of perfect in Scott Heare's last episode as the other official Co-host of Sweet Jesus. You won't want to miss this one as not only does it conclude Season One, but is the best episode we've produced that did not include a guest. We love you Scott! It's good to be rich unless you're the young guy Jesus was talking to in Luke 18. Does he sell everything? Does he follow Jesus? Well, nobody really knows, but we do get to see another tough conversation that Jesus has with someone who feels like that have it all figured out! That guy leaves not feeling the sweetness and allows us to feel grateful that we're not him. Unless... maybe... we're more like him than we'd like to think. Check out Soul Pastor, Mike Cofer's take on this fairly popular and oft misunderstood passage. Have a question, insight or request? In this episode we try to get through the narrow door, but Jesus tells us we'd best be on time or we may get locked out! Not so sweet, really. Even still, we've committed to mixing in some of that pink stuff to enhance the flavor of this bitter cup. Plenty of savory insights mixed in with our normal shenanigans as we explore this passage from Luke 13.Have a question, insight or request? In John chapter 8, Jesus escalates the argument on this episode of SJ!P. Pastor Nathan Brown from Vintage Church guides us through why Jesus is blowing up the crowd with what might be the most serious insult He ever drops! “You're of your father, the devil…” There's not enough pink stuff on the continent that can sweeten this remark, but we pile it on anyway. Check out some amazing insights on Jesus tactics, Church metrics and the difference between knowing about someone and knowing the person. Watch out for that Evil Eye! Jesus let's us know that we have to pick just one master. Which one will it be? Join us on the Oregon Trail with pastor Mel Steinmeyer (not to be confused with your host, Mel Swartz... crazy, right? Who ever heard of two Melvins in the same room unless they're related?) Pastor Mel guides us through this passage about God and money and how it revolutionized his life. Have a question, insight or request? Still on the Oregon Trail we make a stop and visit with pastor James Lafollette to discuss a doozy. Of the things Jesus has said this is by far the most bizarre! Though we think of the notion in most Christian circles as normal it was anything but when Jesus said the first time in synagogue. "Eat my flesh... and drink my blood..." we're not what any of His followers was expecting and almost everyone left!! Explore this passage from The Gospel of John with our guest. James Lafollette is a Vineyard Pastor and Area Leader. James has been in ministry faithfully serving for 50 years! Among the hardest things Jesus says is this doozy, ...if you brother sins against you seven times... then you must forgive him..." It sounds sweet, but if it was, why do His disciples respond with "Increase our faith!" Forgiveness is a beautiful notion which is nearly impossible for humans to do without divine inspiration. Thankfully we'll get just that from Pastor Alex Valle-Lopez who guides us through this passage from Luke 17. Have a question, insight or request? While it might not seem like a tough thing to say, it's probably because it's so sweetly familiar. But really, this whole passage is difficult to understand, especially for Nicodemus! What does it mean to be "Born again"? We're here to help Nic out thanks to the guidance of Pastor Jason Estle whose ministry is focused on the homeless and addicted. Jason shows us how radical Jesus' words are no matter how ordinary we've tried to make them.Have a question, insight or request? This, our first episode on the Oregon Trail takes Sweet Jesus into the Pacific North West. We've even created another Sweet J PNW Style with my cohost for the OT Austin Nailon. A day late and a drachma short but we finally got this SJ!P ready. This time Jesus sets the records straight on who He considers to be His mother and brothers and sisters! It sure doesn't sound sweet when He trucks His family in front of His followers but it just may turn out to be one of the sweetest things He's ever said.Have a question, insight or request? Looking for some appreciation? Sweet Jesus would give you some, but it might not be the best reason to serve. Another counter cultural message from the Gospel. Not really a parable, but much like those headings in your bible, we don't mind getting it wrong. In this story about how to be a good manager beatings are doled like a vending machine on tilt. I would say Jesus takes leadership in His Church very seriously. Are you worthy... of a beating or worse? There's really isn't anyway to put this in a soft serve with sprinkles on top. Zingin'em left and right, Jesus delivers some great one liners without any sugar to help the medicine go down. That's where we come in! We add the Sweet Jesus saccharine to make it easier to swallow. With no place to lay your head, letting the dead bury the dead, and leaving your family behind Luke gives a tasty account of what it takes to follow Jesus. On this episode we discuss first century discipleship, what it's like to obey before you know why and pirates! Jesus loves to bring the party down... if he's partying with pharisees! It's crazy tough to make this Jesus sound syrupy as he commits one party foul after another. From healing on the Sabbath, who should be invited to the party and why they won't get it in, JC takes it to'em the whole way. No rest for the pharisees on this Sabbath! I guess it's ok to party on the Sabbath as long as nobody gets healed.Have a question, insight or request? With special guest Dr. David McNitzky we explore a post resurrection Jesus letting Peter know It's none of his business what happens to John. There's no sweet way to say it, but we give it our best effort regardless. Dr. McNitzky gives us some candid insights from the scriptures and his personal experience on looking over the fence and wondering if they're living the Sweet life. From the wedding at Mount Sinai to the adultery at Mount Sinai and back to the wedding ceremony and to the Church and back around to some personal stories. Divorce... not typically a topic of entertainment although Kramer vs Kramer was a movie. Sweet Jesus! delivers on a topic that might be one of the most difficult things to discuss in church 2nd only to the pastor's wife's hair style or backwashing in the communion cup. In this tough passage we do our best to add the saccharin needed to put you off the pink stuff forever. From ancient Israel to modern America we pass through time and space to Frame the biblical discussion around this not so sweet topic. Have a question, insight or request? Soooo... anybody up for gouging an eye out? While I'm sure the line will be long and full of anticipation but we might want to hold on a minute before we do it. In typical Sweet Jesus fashion our special guest Rev. Mike Cofer, Soul Pastor of Mission Liberty Hill helps us understand what Jesus might be saying when he suggests gouging out our eye or cutting off our hand. In between references to Monty Python, Lobotomies and Masters of the Universe are some great discussions and insights delivered to us by our guest. This is probably, if not surely, our best episode to date. ...'course we've only had 5. It was bound to improve eventually.Have a question, insight or request? What do figs, church, leadership, trashing the Temple, currency and cursing have in common? Find out in this next installment of Sweet Jesus! You ever think about the stuff Jesus liked? What was His favorite meal? Maybe His favorite drink? Well, we have a theory about His favorite snack. The consequences of which are deadly for a certain tree. In episode 4 we explore a Hangry Jesus who might be up to more than just leveling His blood sugar. In typical Sweet Jesus! fashion, we deliver the sweetness, absurdity and a couple of points that might be worth pondering. Have a question, insight or request? Now we push Sweet Jesus! to the limit. There's a storm a brewin' and lightning is about to strike. From Luke 12:49-53 could we possibly land this hard saying any softer? Well, give it your best shot! We did. And the results are, well... worth a conversation anyway. In this episode there's a quite a long pre-amble, so you may want to fast forward to the 51st minute or so. Or you can you use the chapter setting if you're app allows and select "Get to it". We could have cut it out, but we figure if you're still listening you'll probably enjoy the pre-ramble. Did Jesus really just call Peter "Satan"? Maybe not the most difficult saying of Jesus for us but probably for Peter! Yet another thing that's really hard to say whilst sipping' on sweet tea and eating cucumber sandwiches sliced ever so thin. But we're sticking to our promise and we make it happen. On this, our very first episode, we explore one of the hardest things Jesus ever says to His followers. From the Mark 8:34-38 passage it's hard to imagine Jesus speaking in a smooth, saccharin tone, but we do our best. We've got lots of questions, a couple of insights and plenty of knuckle headed banter. Enjoy. If you want to skip the introductions you can go to minute 14:19 where we get down to brass tacks...
